The key to nailing down the organization may rest with an elusive one-eyed man. To find him, Milla joins forces with James Diaz, a suspicious stranger known as the Tracker who conceals his own sinister agenda.
As the search intensifies, the mission becomes more treacherous. For the ring is part of something far larger and more dangerous, reaching the highest echelons of power and influence. Caught between growing passion and imminent peril, Milla suddenly finds herself the hunted -- in the crosshairs of an invisible, lethal assassin who aims to silence her permanently.
Intense emotion... potent suspense... pounding action. Linda Howard weaves these elements into page-turning fiction. Cry No More is a seductive thriller of heartbreak and obsession that moves with a vengeance.

Stunning .......2007-08-20
Wow. Wow - wow WOW. This is quite probably the best romantic thriller I've ever read. It's a BOOK - not just a novel, with one of the best endings of its type that I've ever read, that makes it transcend its genre. Riveted by the first page, I was caught by Milla's character almost immediately. The trouble with most authors of this genre- such as Iris Johannsenn- is that they make their women super-heroes; women who suffer, yes, but who are also almost inhuman in their fighting skills, etc., and thus on some levels can't be empathized with. Milla is completely human and refreshingly, essentially feminine while at the same time believably touch and earthshatteringly brave. She will catch and hold you immediately. While James Diaz, the enigmatic assassin whom she enlists to help her find her missing child, is an equally compelling character, and equally human. The book itself keeps a nice balance between plot tension, twists, and romantic tension, with a highly satisfying denouement on all fronts. The suspense part of the book is also unusually taut and well-written, largely unpredictable and clever for a writer who doesn't make a claim to pure thrillers. Don't miss this one. The kind you stay up until after midnight for.
Yep you'll cry! .......2007-08-08
Forget the title. This is one book where you'll cry more! Linda Howard tackles one of the most emotive situations ever: baby abduction. Milla Boone's baby is torn away from her arms in a Mexican market. She fights for him so fiercely that she rips one of the abductor's eyes out, but gets viciously knifed in the kidney and left for dead, her beautiful baby boy sent to the US for adoption. Ten years later Milla is still searching for her baby. She has never given up, and will not stop until she finds him. Her marriage ends from the strain of this single-minded search. She's even founded a group called Finders, who help police find missing persons. Then, suddenly, she gets a hot tip about a man called Diaz, who may or may not have been involved in the baby smuggling ring.
One of the darkest heroes ever! Wait till you find out what he does for a living. Gulp and shudder. His methods aren't exactly pretty, but he uncovers more about the smuggling ring in a few weeks than Milla's been able to find out in ten years. And the gasps keep coming: body organs are now the cash cows, and sometimes the donating bodies aren't even dead yet.
The villains are appalling scum in this story, true monsters. Diaz will also shock you, especially in one violent scene of raw justice. And then he makes a mistake that emotionally crucifies Milla. The intensity of this book never lets up, from the first page to the last. It is a magnificent, shocking, intense read. The ending is spectacular, enough to reduce you to sobs.
Linda Howard writes a winner here........2007-07-20
This one is worth the money. You will not want to put it down. She is one heck of a story-teller. You will need a towel for all the tears you will cry. This one stays with you well after you read it. I will be buying more of her books. I like when a writer can make the words jump off the page and take you for the ride.
BAAADDD.......2007-06-04
This book has to rank among the worse I've ever read. I couldn't actually read the thing - I scanned it and only because I wanted to see if she found her son. WAY too much filler and unnecessary info. First of all - I hated the protagonist. What a whiney martyer! She basically stopped living to find her son. I can certainly understand why a parent would want to know, but what was she going to do if and when she found him? Take him home and finish raising him? DUH, he doesn't know the woman, he has a life, even if she doesn't. Yuck - just totally unbelievable.
A real tear jerker.......2007-03-15
I actually cried while reading this book. I think you will love it if you have or are a mother!

Stillwatch.......2002-02-19
If you enjoy these suspenseful books, then this is the book for you. It's a book about a woman named Pat, who is a reporter for a local cable news station that is doing a segment on Senator Abbigal Jennings and how she may become the first female Vice President. Along the way she comes into problems. Pat is starting to get threats about the airing of the segment. What could the Senator be hiding that could put herself at danger to not get elected the first female Vice President?
Where are the children.......2002-01-03
I have to say that the book started out pretty slow, but it got more and more interesting as you read it.
I have read several suspense books by this author, but I have to say that I believe that this is the best ever.
Mysteriously interesting.......2001-06-26
Being an ardent Agatha Christie fan, Mary Higgins Clark was recommended to me and this was the first volume of her books that I read.
There aren't any detectives like Hercules Poirot or Miss Marple still the stories keep you glued to the book till you reach the end.
'Weep no more, my lady' has a certain Christie's touch. The story is about a young woman Elizabeth. Her sister, Leila is murdered and Ted, her sister's fiance is convicted, with Elizebeth being the only witness. There are other charachters like Leila's friend the Baron and Baroness, her agent, another rival actress. The interesting thing is that each charachter has some motive for the murder. And finally the real murderer turns out to be... (You have to read the book to find out).
'Stillwatch' is about a young reporter who is making a television documentary. But what she does NOT know is that this documentary is linked to her past and will affect her present life. Not much of a mystery here but still an interesting read.
'A cry in the night' reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock's movie Psycho and hence the reason for 4 stars.
A good selection for those who have a preference for mysteries (minus politics, violence and sex).
mary higgins clark.......2001-01-07
i find her books so engrosing that i can not put them down until i find out who did it. her method of delivery always leaves you guessing. i would recommend these books highly to anyone.
Better selections....2 out of 3.......2000-09-25
I read all stories & enjoyed most of them. I would say, this is a 4 1/2 starrer. The only thing keeping me from giving it a 5 is that I didn't like the "Cry in the Night" so much. Had it been "Where are the Children", I would have given it a 10 star rate, if there is such a thing :-)Moreover, I like the compilation here better than the other MHC trilogy.
After reading 6 MHC stories in a row, I am becoming familiar with her style & events albeit characters taking on different forms. Nevertheless, her books are interesting & will make you lose track of time.

Simply Great.......2002-10-03
I have read many books regarding the Afro American experience in Urban america, and I can not tell you how pleased I am with this new writer's style. She did not try to hide what many of us may or maynot be going through everyday. The way she was able to draw me into the storyline is a gift that should be shared more frequently. I could not get enough the book and was annoyed that the story was over. Kudos to this new writer and please put out another book. I can't wait.
excellent book!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-05-19
This is the best book i have read in years. I am anxiously awaiting to read more books from this author. I hope she comes out with another one soon. A MUST BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Book Description
ieutenant Jacqueline 'Jack' Daniels is having a bad week. Her live-in boyfriend has left her for his personal trainer, chronic insomnia has caused her to max out her credit cards with late-night home shopping purchases, and a frightening killer who calls himself 'The Gingerbread Man' is dumping mutilated bodies in her district. Between avoiding the FBI and its moronic profiling computer, joining a dating service, mixing it up with street thugs, and parrying the advances of an uncouth PI, Jack and her binge-eating partner, Herb, must catch the maniac before he kills again....and Jack is next on his murder list. Whiskey Sour is full of laugh-out-loud humor and edge-of-your-seat suspense, and it introduces a fun, fully drawn heroine in the grand tradition of Kinsey Millhone, Stephanie Plum, and Kay Scarpetta.
Download Description
Lieutenant Jacqueline Daniels, or Jack, as she's known, has just broken up with her boyfriend and is having one of her bouts of insomnia, so she's not in the best of moods anyway. Then a frightening serial killer who calls himself the Gingerbread Man starts murdering women all over Chicago and dumping their violated bodies in garbage cans. With her binge-eating partner Herb, Jack begins to piece together the mystery of the maniac who's terrorizing the entire city. Unfortunately the FBI (or Feebs) send two officers who look like the Bobbsey Twins, and who have inordinate faith in their profiling computer.WHISKEY SOUR is full of hilarious moments in Jack Daniels' life, mingled with incredibly suspenseful scenes as she gets closer to discovering the killer— but not before he threatens her own life as well.

Whiskey Sour.......2007-07-16
J. A. Konrath is an awesome author and this is one of his BEST! I read all the other one's first, I didn't know the were sequel's sort of but still I was on the edge of my seat I knew what happened to the gingerbread man and still it was a white knuckle. If you have never read any of his books let me just say they are not for the weak stomached people, the second book he puts out still has gross scene's that creep into my thought's Bloody Mary is the title. in closing yes I LOVED WHISKEY SOUR I was drunk on its humor and dizzy from the thrill's
Gimme a Shot!.......2007-06-12
Whiskey Sour is labeled "Mystery" but if it's a mystery it's the kind that rings your doorbell then punches you in the face, points and laughs rather than plays peek-a-boo with you. From the moment I finally found it I hoped it was going to be different. It does have a florescent cover after all.
Whiskey Sour is the first Jack Daniels mystery. Veteran police detective Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels is not only lead investigator in a nasty serial killer case she's also been singled out by the Gingerbread Man as an adversary worthy of "special treatment".
I was unsure for quite a ways into it. My trepidation and the things I liked were pretty much in balance. The tone to the writing is different than a lot of the stories I've read lately. Instead of the book wrapping itself around the reader it plays more like a private drama acted out before them. The action itself is the atmosphere.
I'm not sure about Jack herself. I did like that the main character was troubled, older and experienced. No young upstarts here. But Jack is neither a character I'd be able to enjoy a coffee date with nor one I'd want to dive into the story to help out. I don't despise her by any means, but honestly I didn't find a lot of sympathy for her either until after I knew what had happened between her and Harry. It took a while for her to show more emotion than just a cop. She's not, in the end, an "I need sympathy" character.
Konrath also uses a writing tool that I am terribly skeptical about. Interspersed in the story from Jack's point of view are chapters from the bad guy's point of view. Normally I don't like this mechanic. I generally don't like as a reader (or as a writer like my readers), to know anything that the character doesn't. But Konrath uses the technique well, putting the villain's sections in present tense third person and Jack's parts in first person past tense. This method absolutely would not have worked for me if the Gingerbread Man wasn't such a proactive killer. If I didn't know what he had done, specifically to attack Jack, then spend two chapters waiting for Jack to find her little presents, then I definitely would have been turned off.
But like I said, this mystery isn't content to just sit back and slowly unfurl. It sits around a bit, gets bored, then jumps up and hits you with a baseball bat.
I'm still not sure if Konrath's style works for me. He doesn't pull his punches, he doesn't hesitate or blur the shot. That does work for me. Whether I like the series as a whole or not I'm hooked for another book. Hopefully this time Harry gets what's coming to him. This book rates a buy it for sheer balls.
Great Series Kick-off.......2007-05-31
How lucky was I to find this first novel for cheap! Jack Daniels is the ultimate cop heroine. She's a 45-year-old, brown-eyed, brunette Chicago cop, a violent crimes lieutenant. Jack is short for Jacqueline, and she acquired the Daniels by a now-defunct marriage. When the story begins, she has a live-in boyfriend, but he deserts her almost immediately for a lack of attention. Jack lives for her job, and now she's caught a new case with a dangerous, sadistic killer. His first two victims were found in convenience store garbage cans, their bodies mutilated. The killer calls himself the Gingerbread Man, and he seems to have developed a fixation on Jack, intending to make her one of his victims.
Jack embodies my favorite traits from Kinsey Millhone, VI Warshawski, and Eve Dallas. She's a tough broad with a feminine side, joining a dating service when she realizes she doesn't miss her boyfriend so much as a warm body. Her partner, Herb Benedict, eats constantly, while Jack knocks back countless cups of coffee. They have a witty repartee going between them, as well as Jack's wry observations of the world at large, adding up to a number of chuckles throughout the book. The villain, the Gingerbread Man, is a creepy, sociopathic killer with some sick plans. When Jack sees the depth of his sickness, she's determined to stop him, no matter the cost. This is a tense thriller that also managed to make me laugh. I found not one thing not to like about Jack. She's unpretentious, upstanding without being a goody two-shoes, and just plain funny. I will definitely read more Jack Daniels mysteries.
Perfect!.......2007-05-31
My husband found me this book based solely off the fact that Whiskey Sours are my favorite drink, and like the heroine, I used to drive an 86 Nova in Chicago.
When I read a few pages it hit me that as a devoted Janet Evanovich fan I thought I'd like the book.
I loved it!
Lt. "Jack" Daniels is hard boiled sarcatsic 46 year old woman married to her job. She is called to the scene where a body has been dumped outside a 7-11 and then comes home to find her boyfriend has left her for her personal trainer, theoretically a woman.
Jack is partnered with Herb, a binge eating detective first grade, and dogged by two FBI agents who play like Gracie to her George and give Jack perfect set-ups for snarky jokes.
Insterspersed with her insomniatic narrative are chapters told in seond-person present-tense narrative following the killer who calls himself the Gingerbread Man.
He kills again and, impressed by Jack, becomes infatuated with her.
Thus begins a realistic game of cat and mouse that has the FBI believeing the killer is a French-Canadian Hunchbacked Mountie, and has Jack chasing down leads with grimy private detectives and dead doctors in the suburbs.
It builds well, has some really gory parts, and when you discover how the killer is selecting his victims you'll howl with laughter. I know that sounds strange now, but trust me.
My only 2 complaints are 1) that what links the victims was something I would assume would come up when speaking with family and friends and 2) she keeps refering to the smog in Chicago. Chicago has little smog, and the reason you can't see the stars at night is because of the light pollution, not smog.
Still the killer is smart, depraved, and a fearsome opponent for the wisecracking, tired, udnerfed Lt. Jack. The plot moves quickly, there's lots of action, even an infomercial spending spree.
Somewhere between Janet Evanovich and Elmore Leonard lives JA Konrath; do not miss this series!
Entertainment Value Only.......2007-05-01
a lot of holes in the police procedural stuff, but an entertaining read for the beach crowd...interesting characters

Another in the White Wolf Reissues of the classic Sword and Sorcery series.......2006-06-21
As stated (and mis-stated) in the other reviews, this is not a graphic novel nor a comic book adaptation of the series. Mike Mignola did the cover illustrations and some interior art for this, and other, White Wolf re-issues of Leiber's works. I believe it is before Mignola became a household name with his Hellboy series, but the illustrations are clearly Mignola.
That being said, the reason to get this, or any of the White Wolf Leiber (or Moorcock, Ellison, etc.) productions is that they are quite simply the definitive editions of this series. This is groundbreaking stuff, and really the paving stones for swords and sorcery fantasy fiction, on a level plane with the Robert E. Howard Conan books, Moorcock's Elric series, or Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series. Read and enjoy!
This collection contains ten stories in the "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" series, seven originally collected in Swords Against Death, two originally collected in Swords in the Mist, and one from Bazaar of the Bizarre, as follows, with dates of original publication:
Thieves' House * Unknown Feb '43
The Bleak Shore * Unknown Nov '40
The Howling Tower * Unknown Jun '41
The Sunken Land * Unknown Feb '42
The Seven Black Priests * Other Worlds May '53
Claws from the Night ["Dark Vengeance"] * Suspense Fll '51
The Price of Pain-Ease * ss Swords Against Death, Ace, 1970
181 * Bazaar of the Bizarre * Fantastic Aug '63
The Cloud of Hate * Fantastic May '63
Lean Times in Lankhmar * Fantastic Nov '59
All of the editions in this series are very nicely done, worth seeking out, and escalating in value!
Anticonner is misleading you........2006-05-13
Weird that the word "con" should be in the name. This is not a graphic novel, not in the comic book sense of the word.
It is a normal prose paperback you'd find at the grocery store; and you should pay no more than what is reasonable for such an item.
Chances are if you're a Mignola fan, you're a fan of the art. The only Mignola art contained within is precious little.
Buyers beware.
Great book + Great artist = Pretty good graphic novel.......2005-06-16
I love anything by Mike Mignola, and Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser should have been a great adaptation for his style, but it just came off a little flat. That's really the only thing keeping it from a full five stars. Definitely worth picking up, especially for a Mignola fan.

"If you live long enough, you will probably become infirm and develop at least some of the trappings of old age," admits author Isadore Rosenfeld, M.D. "However, you can make that happen later rather than sooner; you can delay the onset of disability and chronic disease so as to enjoy life and remain vigorous and independent for most of your later years." Enabling you to accomplish that is Rosenfeld's aim in Live Now, Age Later. Each chapter deals with a specific aging complication--such as Alzheimer's, cancer, depression, stroke, osteoporosis, heart attacks, prostate enlargement, and losses of hearing, vision, libido, and teeth. For each condition, Rosenfeld presents the cause, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and specific strategies for lessening your risk. These may include diet, exercise, stress reduction, supplements, and medications, depending on the condition. A "what to remember" list at the end of each chapter is helpful for review. This is not a "miracle cure" book that tells you to take some alphabet-soup combination of vitamins or esoteric herbs to guarantee living to 120 with the body and mind of a 20-year-old. Rather, the recommendations are moderate and medically conventional. Rosenfeld's style is clear and accessible; his suggestions are easy to understand and implement. --Joan Price

a must read.......2000-07-29
Dr. Rosenfeld writes a book that we all should have in our library. Dr. Rosenfeld tackles a lot of the problems that most of us encounter in our lifetime and tells us how we could delay or even prevent them all together. There are some problems we are afraid to speak to our doctors about, Dr. Rosenfeld answers those questions as well.
This is a book I plan on having and using in my every day life. A must read.
LONG LIVE THE CLOCK!.......2000-06-14
Rosenfeld being a bestselling cardiologist, I would heed his message: longevity is the great conquest of the new millennium, but it is fundamental to keep in good health and in full control of one's own faculties. Is that an oxymoronic utopia? Not at all. The author proceeds to offer an exhaustive guide to prevent or fight the pathologies and ailments of old age. A strong supporter of alternative medicine as against the traditional one, Dr Rosenfeld confronts numerous related themes by presenting the latest remedies, demolishing the false myths, and giving practical advice. A healthy book.
Great Information in a Great Format!.......1999-10-29
After reading some of the online reviews, I was a bit skeptical but had to read the book out of curiosity. I am a medical information specialist and consider myself extremely well informed. Still, Dr. Rosenfeld managed to come up with things I'd not read elsewhere and I was able to immediately put these to good use. His style is always entertaining, his knowledge of the field appears vast, and his research superior. I'll be buying several as Christmas gifts - it is that good.
Another rip-off.......1999-09-28
I don't know why I don't just give up on Dr. Rosenfeld's books. He simply gathers together information that we already know, if we read, that is. Dr. Rosenfeld reminds me of Milton Berle, he never met someone else's work he didn't love.
Disappointing.......1999-07-14
Upon the purchase of this book, I anticipated new insights and information regarding preventative anti-aging breakthroughs. I felt the title was very misleading and, therefore, disappointed in the content. Although readable, it failed to say anything "new". It amounts to your basic medical handbook and should be titled accordingly.
