An engaging collection of lectures on art and artists.......1998-07-16
Dr. Barry Panter, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, has put together with his fellow editors an engaging collection of transcribed lectures on art and artists. In most cases, the mental health professionals analyzing these artists (e.g., Jackson Pollock, van Gogh) take rather a reductionistic, Freudian stance on the sources of creativity. This is to me the book's drawback, along with the limitation of space--and therefore, depth--allowed each contributor. Nevertheless, there are some excellent articles here, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the psychology of creativity and its close connection to madness, or--to put it more clinically--psychopathology.

Description:
Aggregate stability often exhibits a large inter-annual and seasonal variability which occurs regardless of residue treatments and is often larger than the differences between soils or cropping systems. Variations in soil moisture and seasonal stimulation of microbial activity are frequently cited as the major causes. The goal of this paper was to evaluate the effects of drying-rewetting cycles on aggregate stability and on its main microbially mediated agents from a mechanistic point of view. The 3-5mm aggregates of a silty soil were incubated at 20^oC for 63 days with the following treatments and their combinations: (i) with or without straw input and (ii) with or without exposure to four dry-wet cycles. Microbial activity was followed by measuring the soil respiration. We estimated the microbial agents of aggregate stability measuring hot-water extractable carbohydrate-C, microbial biomass carbon and ergosterol content. We measured the water drop penetration time to estimate the hydrophobicity and aggregate stability according to Le Bissonnais [1996. Aggregate stability and assessment of soil crustability and erodibility: I. Theory and methodology. European Journal of Soil Science 47, 425-437] to distinguish three breakdown mechanisms: slaking, mechanical breakdown and microcracking. The addition of straw stimulated microbial activity and increased the resistance to the three tests of aggregate stability, enhancing the internal cohesion and hydrophobicity of aggregates. All the estimated microbial agents of aggregate stability responded positively to the addition of organic matter and were highly correlated with aggregate stability. Fungal biomass correlated better with aggregate stability than total microbial biomass did, showing the prominent role of fungi by its triple contribution: physical entanglement, production of extracellular polysaccharides and of hydrophobic substances. Dry-wet cycles had less impact on aggregate stability than the addition of straw, but their effects were more pronounced when microbial activity was stimulated demonstrating a positive interaction.

Description:
Carbon dioxide mass transfer is a key factor in cultivating micro-algae except for the light limitation of photosynthesis. It is a novel idea to enhance mass transfer with the cyclic procedure of absorbing CO"2 with a high performance alkaline abosorber such as a packed tower and regenerating the alkaline solution with algal photosynthesis. Hence, the algae with high affinity for alkaline condition must be purified. In this study, a hot spring alga (HSA) was purified from an alkaline hot spring (pH 9.3, 62^oC) in Taiwan and grows well over pH 11.5 and 50^oC. For performance of HSA, CO"2 removal efficiencies in the packed tower increase about 5-fold in a suitable growth condition compared to that without adding any potassium hydroxide. But ammonia solution was not a good choice for this system with regard to carbon dioxide removal efficiency because of its toxicity on HSA. In addition, HSA also exhibits a high growth rate under the controlled pHs from 7 to 11. Besides, a well mass balance of carbon and nitrogen made sure that less other byproducts formed in the procedure of carboxylation. For analysis of some metals in HSA, such as Mg, Mn, Fe, Zn, related to the photosynthesis increased by a rising cultivated pH and revealed that those metals might be accumulated under alkaline conditions but the growth rate was still limited by the ratio of bicarbonate (useful carbon source) and carbonate. Meanwhile, Nannochlopsis oculta (NAO) was also tested under different additional carbon sources. The results revealed that solutions of sodium/potassium carbonate are better carbon sources than ammonia carbonate/bicarbonate for the growth of NAO. However, pH 9.6 of growth limitation based on sodium was lower than one of HSA. The integrated system is, therefore, more feasible to treat CO"2 in the flue gases using the algae with higher alkaline affinity such as HSA in small volume bioreactors.

Description:
Finding environmentally friendly and cost-effective methods to remediate soils contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is currently a major concern of researchers. In this study, a series of small-scale semi-continuous extractions - with and without in situ wet oxidation - were performed on soils polluted with PAHs, using subcritical water (i.e. liquid water at high temperatures and pressures, but below the critical point) as the removal agent. Experiments were performed in a 300mL reactor using an aged soil sample. To find the desorption isotherms and oxidation reaction rates, semi-continuous experiments with residence times of 1 and 2h were performed using aged soil at 250^oC and hydrogen peroxide as oxidizing agent. In all combined extraction and oxidation flow experiments, PAHs in the remaining soil after the experiments were almost undetectable. In combined extraction and oxidation no PAHs could be detected in the liquid phase after the first 30min of the experiments. Based on these results, extraction with hot water, if combined with oxidation, should reduce the cost of remediation and can be used as a feasible alternative technique for remediating contaminated soils and sediments.

EVERY YEAR I GIVE MY FAVORITE M.D. A 'FAR SIDE' CALENDAR FOR CHRISTMAS. HE LOVES THEM!! HE CAN ENJOY THE HUMOR IN BETWEEN LISTENING TO PEOPLE'S PROBLEMS ALL DAY. AT FIRST I THOUGHT PERHAPS A CALENDAR CALLED 'MATING RITUALS' WOULD BE INAPPROPRIATE, BUT I SHOULD HAVE TRUSTED GARY LARSON, AND SHOULD HAVE JUST 'KNOWN' THAT, AS USUAL,IT WAS 'JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED!!'
I ALSO PURCHASED ON FOR MY BROTHER-IN-LAW,ANOTHER FAN OF THE 'FAR SIDE.'THESE CALENDARS IN GENERAL, MAKE THE NICEST GIFT FOR PEOPLE WHO ENJOY 'FAR SIDE' HUMOR!

Far Side Mating Rituals.......2006-02-25
The perfect way to stay organized and have a laugh too! I use the weekly pages to schedule my appointments and track my expences before I hit the computer. The cartoons are always good for a laugh and jog my memory of science and botany courses.
Not his Best Work.......2006-02-24
I had thought that this was going to be a day to day calander (its not). Besides that it seems like Mr. Larson has lost his touch with humor, I wont purchase another one next year.

NEEDS A SEQUEL.......2007-01-24
This is a book that whets the appetite for more light-hearted takes on American society, status and snobbery.
Pure entertainment, although I'm sure there will be those who take it as gospel.
I send it as a gift to my friends in Europe.
A HOOT.......2006-06-23
An easy, fun read, but the reviewer SOCIAL CLIMBER from Sonoma CA listed the author's email address incorrectly. It's kevindoyle42@earthlink.net. Doyle answered me with a list of other titles when I contacted him. HOW TO MEET BEAUTIFUL WOMEN and DATING YOUNGER WOMEN are also written with tongue firmly in cheek.
Entertaining Author.......2006-06-17
When I contacted the author at his email address listed in the earlier review, he answered and said the book was guaranteed to work and if it doesn't he buys the disgruntled reader a new Cadillac. How To Marry Money is full of the same wry humor.
Worth Reading.......2006-06-16
It took a while to get past the first few pages, but I kept reading and the remaining chapters had helpful pointers about life in general, love, work and self image. I called the author's publicist and received his email address kevindoyle42@earthlin.net and have been exchanging dialog since.
PLEASANTLY SURPRISED.......2005-11-16
It was annoying to find my wife reading a book with a title like this but, after picking it up and reading it, I found it to be a lot of fun.
Now I take the advice of another reviewer (who found as "entertaining as it is instructional") and often give HOW TO MARRY MONEY as a light-hearted gift for clients, graduates & hostesses.
Customer Reviews:
The book was full of errors and it was not a good read........2007-04-23
This book was so boring I really did not learn anything the book was full or errors. I fell asleep on this one please don't write anymore books.
Actually have not read it but..........2006-04-20
... the thought of talking to a woman who HAS read it, makes me want to run away screaming!
For college undergrads only!.......2006-01-24
I was disappointed with this book. Based on the content of the book, if you have not snagged a man with money while in college, you have missed your opportunity. This book really does not give much input on how an entry level professional would marry up. Secondly, it does not help if you are out of the circle trying to get in. The author makes it obvious that she came from a background with money so it was much easier for her to attract a man with money because she is already in the circle. However there is no advice given to those who are trying to marry up. I would recommend this book to maybe college freshman but not for anyone else. It is a waste of time. I am glad I did not pay full price.
ENTERTAINING.......2005-10-14
It;s an entertaining book, but it can be pointed out that Kevin Doyle and John T. Molloy have written books on this subject and both of those authors seem to share the opinion that the universal qualities men look for in a mate are accomplishment and morality, notwithstanding all female efforts to be sexually alluring or socially superior.
So Good I Got My Friends Hooked.......2005-07-21
This book was so good I had everyone I know (even men) taking the quiz to see what type of gold-digger they were. I love the fact that Rich kept it real and let 'em know that you have to use your personality as well as appearance to get and keep a worthy man. I also love that she broke it down for you depending on your quiz results and catered to the scene that you might feel most comfortable on. Although some of the ideas and stories in the book feel a little unrealistic and the constant preaching about true love will have skeptics like me sucking their teeth, she does sound loyal to the idea of self love and holding out for the highest bidder on your heart. This book if perfect for those curious about gold-digging, but a little shy of life in the fast lane.

YOU CAN'T HELP BUT LAUGH.......2006-10-05
It's so dead-on in its observations that you can't help but laugh!
Ostensibly about golddigging, this book shows women the absurdity of greed while encouraging them to be better people instead of blinded by bling.
It should be under Humor instead of Self-help.
SHE IS A HE.......2005-06-20
This is a favorite item to give favorite women. The title has been recently updated and issued under the author's real name KEVIN DOYLE. Both versions have great covers and it's fun to gift wrap them in currency.
DETRACTORS LACK SENSES OF HUMOR.......2005-01-21
This is a book I almost didn't buy because of a detracting review. I'm glad I listened to a friend who emailed me the Amazon page
While the author's tongue is firmly in cheek, there is a lot of useful information. Some common sense bears re-emphsis.
Three cheers for the light-hearted among us!
"Ruth Leslee Greene" is obviously a pen-name
CHECK OUT THE LATEST .......2004-08-25
This is a good book by Kevin Doyle writing under pen-name "Ruth Leslee Greene."
The nom de plume is obviously a play on the word "ruthless."
Another version of HOW TO MARRY MONEY just out from Penguin/Plume under Doyle's own name has been revised, expanded and updated.
Either way, both have great covers and make perfect gifts for birthday girls, graduates, hostesses, and stockings over the holidays.
Check out Doyle's HOW TO MEET BEAUTIFUL WOMEN.
ANOTHER EDITION UNDER THE AUTHOR'S REAL NAME IS EVEN BETTER.......2004-08-13
This is a fun read by KEVIN DOYLE, writing as RUTH LESLEE GREENE.
A even bigger, better. less expensive version is the one Doyle has out this year under the same title but using his own name from Penguin/Plume.
Also fun by Kevin Doyle are two other titles - HOW TO MEET BEAUTIFUL WOMEN and DATING YOUNGER WOMEN.
This author is truly the King of Shallow Pursuits and his books make perfect host/hostess gifts.
