Book Description
Japan has long had a thriving tradition of high-quality handcrafted ceramics, including some of the world's most sophisticated porcelains. This highly informative volume written by a leading authority describes the origin and development of the elegant Imari and Kakiemon porcelain wares which
were in great demand in Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Kaolin was discovered in the Arita area of Kyushu in the early seventeenth century. The first porcelain wares were made by immigrant Korean potters, from whom Japanese potters were quick to learn new potting techniques and cobalt blue underglaze decoration. Local wares were further enriched by
enamel overglaze techniques introduced from China not long afterwards. High standards were ensured by the strict administration of the governing Nabeshima fief, and within just a few decades Arita had become the hub of Japan's booming export trade in high-quality porcelain.
Porcelain produced in the Arita kilns came to be known as Imari ware, named after the nearby port from which local wares were shipped. The Kakiemon family gained particular renown for the quality of their color enamels and artistic designs.
With 95 color plates illustrating some rare and classic Imari and Kakiemon pieces from museums and private collections, this volume will appeal to collectors as well as enthusiasts.
Book Description

Projects are designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced clayers. Well-known polymer clay artist Dinko Tilov walks readers through each step and provides instructions for creating his renowned "Dinko" critters with their silly, cartoonish faces.

A Polymer Clay Fantasy Figure Book.......2007-03-09
A cute book for anyone who likes to dabble in the fantasy world of polyamer clay.
Great step by step explanation.......2007-02-07
The characters in this book are somewhat goofy, however, the author provides excellent basics on armature building for creatures like horses and dragons. If you are looking for a lighter side to the fantasy world and would like to sculpt some fun creatures, this book is perfect. I think that kids will really love how achievable the sculptures in this book are for them.
One of the best art/craft technique books ever.......2006-12-04
Superb from start to finish. If you have any interest in sculpting fantastic creatures in polymer clay this is the best place to start bar none-- and it will take you far. I've done most of the projects in the book and am now very comfortable creating my own critters from scratch. The photos are fantastic with just the right amount of detail (no shots taken from halfway across the room!), the text is very clear (and funny!), and the book is simply a lot of fun overall. Can't recommend it highly enough for anyone interested in the subject.
Awsome Book.......2006-05-10
I love this book it is step by step. I made the first smiling chicken and he looked just like the pictures. Super book.
Gorgeous, but fantasy means trolls here.......2005-08-31
This book is gorgeous, with unique, detailed projects and explicit step-by-step directions. Just be forewaarned that it interprets fantasy to mean troll-like, so even Santa and the Easter bunny are trolls. I am therefore returning my copy, and just wanted to warn you what to expect. But it is an absolutely gorgeous, well-done book, and most people will love it.

Unlike the reviewer before me, I have actually read this book. It is excellent! It is very clear due to its numerous illustrations and instructions. Well worth the money.
Poorly done book.......2000-08-14
Hi. I am not interested at all in this book. Richard Butz is talented, but his books are generally not clear at all. I would highly recommend Scandinavian Woodcarving. While the title may be a turn-off, this book is just for fun carving. Check it out!

Great Variety of Colorful and Fun Projects, Well Taught!.......2006-06-26
GET CREATIVE WITH POLYMER CLAY is Emma Ralph's second book on the subject of crafting with polymer clay. As with her first book, the projects here are inventive, charming and terrific. Suitable for beginners as well as for more advanced clayers (check out the handy skill level which goes from one star to three to let you know how complicated a project is), the 17 superfun and interesting polymer clay offerings go from cards to jewelry to a beautiful Klimt inspired bottle, with variations you can make on many of the projects. For example, a card project with an adorable and colorful hat or handbag card made using polymer has a variation which is wonderful for the winter holidays, having glittery snowflakes adorning it.
There is a comprehensive section on the tools and items which is helpful to get started using polymer clay. Personally, I particularly liked the commentary on characteristics of the specific clays themselves. I have never seen the varieties of clays from the different companies so well analyzed as to their strengths and weaknesses. It is EXTREMELY helpful to know things like this when you are making a project, if you are a beginner. There is also a section at the front on techniques. At the back, there are templates for certain projects in the book.
In reading the book, the first project I would choose personally would be the faux enamelled bracelet. It is beautiful and sophisticated. As a jewelry designer, I found it fascinating and lovely to look at.
The other, simpler projects hold their own as well however, and the colors you can get from properly mixed polymer clay are stunning! Another reason why it is great to have a teacher who knows what she is talking about. It is a book you will want to go back to again and again as a reference guide, as well.
Your imagination can really take off with this inspiring book. The author is one of the top polymer clay bead makers internationally. She has once again produced a book which, from start to finish, is a really great read, and makes you want to get going on the projects you find most appealing right away!

Easy to Follow!.......2006-08-01
This book is written to be able to be followed easily by children. This makes for an easy read and lots of pictures. Both a plus in my book. You can never have to many pictures. The instructions are easy to follow, even if you've never done papier mache before. The projects are not the most creative (things like goblets, trinket box and Native American headbands), but they are simple and create a nice finished project. This is a great book to start out on or just to get a few new ideas.
Book Description
The thought of her little sister, Amy, going off to the big world of college frightened Stephanie Edwards. How would she handle registration? What would she do on the first day of classes? How would Amy ever survive being away from home and family? Instead of taking the usual big-sister approach ("Oh, it's great. You'll love it!"). Edwards thought back to the trials and tribulations of her own first year at college, then created what has become the thoughtful gem of a book, 101 Things a College Girl Should Know from a Big Sister Who's Been There. "I tried to think of all the things I wish I'd known when I was a freshman," Stephanie writes her sister. "This list is advice based on some of the things I did wrong, something of the tings I saw my friends do wrong, and some things all first-year students do wrong. I hope you can learn from our mistakes." Edward's enlightening list will help college-bound freshmen everywhere to make that exciting-but-scary transition to campus life. She's full of thoughtful insights on the learning experience, such as Tip No. 2: "Whenever a professor offers office hours, visit him/her. (It makes a good impression.)" or Tip No. 19: "Remember: Frat guys + beer = TROUBLE"; and to help with life away from home, Tip No. 44: "Don't discourage your feelings of homesickness. (They pass.)" From tutoring to tooth care, class registration to roommates, 101 Things A College Girl Should Know has it all. Filled with helpful hints and gentle musings, this little book is a guaranteed hit as a graduation present, send-off gift, or thoughtful gesture for any campus-bound young woman.

Yes, it is a rip off.......2007-08-06
This took about 2 minutes to read-it's nothing but a tiny book with some college-oriented homilies. I was going to give this as a gift but for the money I spent I could actually get a book that might be worth something to the recipient.I'm returning this.
good book but slightly lacking.......2007-07-27
Someone gave this book to me during my freshman year of college. I read it quickly and laughed along at some parts as I realized that I had indeed already made those mistakes. By far this book is not an all-inclusive guide to college, but it does have some helpful tidbits. Even the parts that say, "drink water, get enough sleep" are good reminders for college girls, who often overlook these things as they get busy and in a new environment. I plan on giving this book to my younger sister when she graduates high school next year, but I intend to write some comments in the book after the author's advice, which is always a good idea to give it a more personal touch, and since some of the things in the book are slightly outdated.
101 Things a College Girl Should Know.......2007-07-11
Great One Liner's, and very entertaining for the incoming freshman!!! My daughter loved the book and so did I.
The Perfect Little Gift.......2007-04-19
Ignore the ridiculous reviews below. For a whopping $7, this book is that perfect little gift instead of a card or as a side item to a gift.
Of course some of it is common sense, but sometimes we just need to be reminded to "Always Lock Your Dorm Room." The indispensable advice, such as, "Don't apply for credit cards until your junior year" and "Bring many towels" is worth the read - This is supposed to be a fun book that is enjoyable to read, NOT the survival guide to college.
I am sitting here reading it right now trying to figure out how many more I should get for friend's children and relatives!
101 Things A College Girl Should Know.......2007-01-11
This is an absolute waste of money. This book should be priced at $1.00. This tiny book has little content and is a ripoff.
