In the 10th installment of his popular Prey series, John Sandford (a.k.a. John Camp) pits his popular antihero, Lucas Davenport, against a pair of cunning killers unlike any he has encountered before.

Attorney Carmel Loan is preternaturally beautiful, intelligent, and ambitious. When she becomes infatuated with fellow barrister Hale Allen, she isn't going to let a little thing like his being married get in her way. A quick meeting with an ex-client sets up the hit on Hale's wife, Barbara. The professional killer, Clara Rinker, is one of the best in the business. Smart, attractive, with a gentle Southern drawl, no one would suspect her of being a top Mafia hit man... er, hit person. When she takes the Allen assignment, she figures it will be easy money for a day's work. But things go wrong from the beginning. Loan's ex-client made a tape of the meeting, and is shaking her down for money. Worse, the shooting of a witness--a cop--brings deputy inspector Lucas Davenport into the case. Somehow Davenport has not only linked Loan to the killing, but seems to have a lead on Rinker as well. Carmel and Clara team up to clean up the loose ends, which includes getting Davenport off their back by whatever means necessary.

Like all of Sandford's books, Certain Prey is a fast and furious ride. Fans of previous Prey books will find Davenport a little older, a little more wary, but no less sharp-witted and determined. Though parts of the plot may stretch the limits of credulity and the dialogue falls a little flat in places, this is still a wonderfully crafted thriller, possibly one of the best of 1999. Certain Prey cements Sandford's standing among such luminaries as James Lee Burke, Lawrence Block, and Thomas Harris. --Perry Atterberry

2 out of 5 stars Verges on Ridiculous.......2007-10-01

I'm a big fan of John Sandford's PREY novels, and have read most of the books in the series. But this tenth entry, CERTAIN PREY, is in my opinion one of the weakest entries.

As a reader, I don't expect thrillers to be completely realistic. But in CERTAIN PREY, Sandford chooses to do away with reality completely, and creates a silly storyline involving two female killers. Neither killer is even remotely believable, and both border on cartoonish in their behavior. Over and over again, I found myself rolling my eyes at much of this book's over-the-top plot and characterization.

Even worse, CERTAIN PREY doesn't really have a lot of suspense. The reader always knows whats going on, and who the killers are, so very little is revealed as the plot progresses. For the most part, this novel left me bored and indifferent.

I realize many fans like CERTAIN PREY, but I personally believe that RULES OF PREY and WINTER PREY are far superior to this misfire. If you've never tried Sandford, my suggestion is to read these two books first.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite "Prey" novels yet........2007-03-13

Sandford has done it again. Time and time again I pick up the next Prey novel starring Lucas Davenport and wonder, is this going to be a recycled plot line with different villain names? You would think that after a dozen books we would be running out of criminal types and motivations. However, while some of the Prey books have some similarities, "Certain Prey" is cleverly original.

Enter a lawyer and her hired hit-woman. As they work together to tie up a few loose ends they become a smooth operating killing machine. Davenport has crafted one of my favorite killers so far in "Certain Prey." Rinker is definitely fun to read about and watch in action. This story is one that is hard to put down; needless to say, I stayed up a little to late to finish this book.

Highly recommended for all Sandford/Davenport fans. "Certain Prey" will not disappoint you. This would make a good stand alone book for those readers who have not read the countless Prey books that lead up to this one; but, greater appreciation will come for those who have read them all in order.

5 out of 5 stars An intense action read from cover to cover.......2007-03-09

John Sandford displays his best talent as a master story teller in this engrossing tale.

"Clara Rinker." That simple and engaging two word opening paragraph sets the tone for the fast paced story in "Certain Prey."

Beautiful but vicious Carmel Loan is a top attorney who has a twisted desire to possess Allen Hale who is a married man. Believing that she needs his wife out of the way in order to possess him she hires a mob assassin to eliminate her. Clara Rinker, a sexy young hit woman with a violent past is the best there is.

Clara has a long history of assassinations and is the consumate professional. She has always made clean close range kills without leaving a single clue behind. That record cannot remain forever and when she hits Barbara Allen a few loose ends come unraveled. Eventually partnering with Carmel they leave behind them a string of dead bodies and an ever increasing number of clues as they attempt to cover their tracks.

Lucas Davenport is a tenacious Minneapolis police chief who hangs on like a bulldog when he gets his teeth into a case. Determined to solve the series of murders he pieces together the case and comes closer to nailing Rinker than anyone ever has.

This is a very engaging read that is told from all viewpoints. Sandford is able to assemble the story in a manner in which the reader is sympathetic toward all characters involved with the possible exception of Carmel Loan. The way he has the ability to get the reader to feel sympathy toward Rinker's plight and at the same time pull for Davenport's dedication to justice makes for a page turning spellbinder.

5 out of 5 stars Certain Prey.......2006-07-12

Great read with many twists. Loved the ending except I would have the two killers both meet in Mexico

5 out of 5 stars Very good and easy reading.......2005-12-07

Albeit is a very good thriller that you'll want to read it in a seating it has several mistakes but none of them is enough to bring down a star.
In this book you'll see many times how the police try to entrap the guilty people as surely happens once or twice for real.

Mistakes:

How a professional killer leaves some evidence and tells some one else to clean it?
How a professional killer just threats to kill someone and not doing it?

Well, that blunders are part of the thrilling story but you can put those evidence schemes in other way to be more credible.

                    Book Description

After an abruptly-ended stay in Paris, Bay Tanner is more than happy to return home to South Carolina and immerse herself back into the tranquil scenery, small-town gossip, and affection of numerous concerned friends. But her peaceful return is short-lived when her fledgling detective agency gets a new client-Gray Palmer, an archeologist friend of Bay's sleuthing partner Erik Whiteside. While digging around one of the isolated coastal islands, Gray discovered a far-from-ancient body and wants help in identifying it. But it isn't long before Gray turns up dead in a freak boating accident .... or before it becomes plain that some very deadly people will do anything to stop an investigation. Now, Bay must travel the darkest byways of the past, from Charleston's historic streets to an infamous local island's shore to the heart of several civil-rights-era disappearances....and into a lethal confrontation.

5 out of 5 stars Outstandingly good book!.......2006-02-26

I just re-read Judas Island for the third time and heartily recommend it. It is an amazing story with a main character who is interesting, intelligent, resourceful, and human. Bay Tanner is a grown-up Nancy Drew...the capable, courageous Nancy; before the writers rewrote the books in the early 1960's...the Nancy that didn't need to be rescued by a male.

The characters are so beautifully described that you can feel them come to life as the story unfolds. On this cold day in Ohio, I was transported to the beaches in South Carolina, the sun shining on the sand, sea breezes, and the "massive live oaks" just off the beach. I felt that I was Bay Tanner as I read... and I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Was Gray killed to cover up a murder?.......2004-08-26

Bay Tanner and her friend Erik Whiteside have started an investigation agency. Bay's background is in accounting and financial consulting. These skills still come in handy in investigations. Erik is great on the computer. Bay's father, The Judge, although confined to a wheelchair, often assists them.

Bay returns home from Paris after the apparent collapse of her short-lived affair with Interpol agent Alain Darnay. Not long after returning, she discovers a rift has been wedged between The Judge and his housekeeper, Lavinia. With some information from Lavinia, Bay is trying to discover the truth about what has happened.

In the meantime, her partner Erik calls about a new case. His old college drinking buddy, archaeologist Gray Palmer, has uncovered a grave and taken a bone. After hinting the bone may belong to a murder victim, Gray is found dead. Bay and Erik start investigating to find out whether his death is related and who the murder victim is. They hit lots of roadblocks along the way, especially from Gray's father. Gray Jr.'s girlfriend spurs them along, but Bay can't decide if she is telling them the complete truth.

Before they uncover the truth, they put themselves in grave danger.

This is the first Bay Tanner book I've read. It definitely won't be the last. It was terrific. I found myself constantly picking it up to read more!

Bay has a lot of personal baggage and it is intertwined into the story in just the right way to keep you wanting more. I really like Bay. She is a believable protagonist. The relationships between characters are very well written, too.

I love books set in the south. Set in South Carolina, this book is steeped in the south. Bay's knowledge of the area and people really comes to play in the solving of this mystery.

This series is definitely a new favorite of mine. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars exciting amateur sleuth.......2004-04-29

Bay Tanner enjoys being with her lover in France as he recuperates from an injury he got while helping her on a case. Their idyllic time together ends when Interpol recruits him for another assignment so Bay returns home to South Carolina, unwilling to put up with the fact that he might die on the job like her husband did. At home, Eric informs her that his friend, archeologist Gray Palmer, is working on uninhabited islands off the southeast coast and has found the remains of a dead body.

He wants them to discover who the deceased is. Before they get deep into their investigation, Gray dies, supposedly in a boating accident. His girlfriend insists that Gray was murdered and the same people who killed him are after her. When a bone is Fed-Exed to Eric, they take it to an archeologist who tells them that it belonged to a black man buried for five decades. Gray's father hires them to find out if his son was murdered and then fires them in the same week. Bay and Erik refuse to stop as they are determined to find the island where the bones are burned, risking their life in the process.

A Bay Tanner mystery is always fun to read because it is an exciting action thriller as well as a cerebral mystery. Readers will understand why Bay hides her heartache so no one can pity her. The plot is basically straight line but that doesn't mean the answers to the mystery are easy to solve because there are quite a few people who seek to stop Bay and Erik any way they can in Kathryn R. Wall's exciting amateur sleuth tale.

                      Book Description

According to island legend, the Judas Bird is a mysterious, seldom-seen resident of Roatán Island that makes itself known to precious few in the first light of pre-dawn. Following each infrequent visit this illusive bird vanishes, with its mournful call never heard in the light of day. To hear the bird is an unusual event, but to actually see it is incredibly rare - an experience that foreshadows change, usually bringing good luck for the observer.

Until recently Roatán was a little-known Caribbean island but now an evil has descended. A small gang of murdurous, modern day land-pirates abruptly becomes the law, terrorizing the island's once peaceful population. Francisco Downer, an old man with a mysterious ability to see into the past is about to lose his family's land to these pirates. To thwart this frightening evil now confronting the Downer family, the old man turns to Todd Wilson, a young, prior Peace Corps volunteer who, during his tour of duty on the island once lived in Francisco's home. After an absence of five years, Todd returns to find the delicate fabric of the island's peaceful culture under immediate threat, devastated by a cascade of rapid changes that leave terror and murder in their wake.

Meanwhile, Colleen Kennit, a young woman residing on a small Scottish island, finds herself living a surrealistic dream, suddenly becoming the heiress of a quiet mountain estate on a tropical island in the western Caribbean she has never heard of. Upon arriving on Roatán, she immediately falls in love with the estate and the local people, but soon she discovers that all is not well. She is trapped as a pawn, wrapped into a dark, diabolical web of greed that threatens her new home.

Desperately wanting to rid the island of the evil and fear that now grips it, Todd puts a clever but complex plan to work. Guided by the old man's secret "memories" into the past, Todd uncovers the key to an ancient Spanish legend regarding a secluded cove and the location of a treasure, buried there over three hundred years before. Digging deeper into this incredible mystery, Todd struggles with his growing love for the beautiful Colleen and his crucial mission—one that could potentially cost him his life.

With his plan seemingly crumbling and a hurricane bearing down on the island, Todd finds himself in a race against time. As everything goes tragically wrong his only hope lies with a belief in his interpretation of the ancient Spanish legend and the faint, mournful call of the illusive Judas Bird.

The Judas Bird quickly captures its readers, wrapping them in the age-old human dramas of intense greed, murder, and romance. David K. Evans crafts a tight plot with charming prose and gentle glimpses of the turbulent years of the 17th century, a time when the island was the primary rendezvous for the "Brethren of the Coast," the lusty, hard-living buccaneers and pirates sailing the Western Caribbean. Blending the majestic with the mundane and using the intricate characterization of colorful islanders and his knowledge of island dialogue and customs, the author paints a beautiful and exciting portrait of life on a small island that was both isolated and unknown until but a few years ago.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for friends of the Bay Island of Honduras.......2006-01-23

The Book of David Evans is a wealth of atmosphere and historical and personal knowledge of the island of Roatan, gathered in more than 40ty years of personal experience. It is the first Novell of the author and to inform readers who have the same feelings like, the reviewer before me, probably have to be informed that this book is not professionelly editat from a big publisher. So it may have its weaknesses in readability and maybe also in typos. which have been topics of several emails from Dr. Evans to the Roatan Discussion Group on Yahoo, where he is an active member and always available for requests. Many people don't know that the production costs of a small number of books, can be almost equally high, compared to a high number of books. So this book has not been published to be an commercial success, but as an personal afford of the author. Therefore the number of the first edition had to be very limited, which means the production cost of the book is rather high, and absolutly higher per book than we are used to from bestsellers like Harry Potter. Such Editions are produced in such a high number, that the actual printing costs are almost zero, compared to the selling price. This is not true for a private enterprise like "the judas bird". The production cost will probably almost have eaten up the whole amount of money the author gets back from amazon.

So if you read the book interested for its spirit and content, you will like, probably love it. If you read it, comparing it with commercial bestseller you are used, too you might get the same impression as my fellow reader from Texas.

Its the point of view which makes the differnce.
And Roatan is indeed a place for modern treasure tales...

                      2 out of 5 stars Disapointed.......2005-06-20

Having been to Roatan twice in the past nine months, I wanted to like this book. I really did. Unfortunately, it failed to live up to my expectations.

While the story itself is interesting, I'm not exaggerating when I say that this is the most poorly edited book I have ever read. It's about twice as long as it should be, partially because it is needlessly repetitious. The author does not give the reader credit for having a brain and spends too much time explaining things that do not need to be explained. What was particularly distracting to me were the spelling errors. While it may seem like a minor point, I'd say conservatively there was one every 4 or 5 pages. In a book of almost 1000 pages, that's a lot of mistakes, and they just distract from the story. There are also a few errors in continuity.

I found it ironic that the publisher makes it very well known that the author is professor emeritus of anthropology. Perhaps if he had some of his colleagues in the English department edit the drafts for him, it would have given us a better book.

When I spend this much money on a hard cover book, I expect it to be professionally edited prior to publication. By the end of this book, I felt like the publisher should have paid me to read it.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Historical and Adventure Filled Novel .......2005-02-04

My name is Gordon Glass from Seattle Washington and I just wanted to share that I have just finished a wonderful book that takes place on the island of Roatan called "The Judas Bird". And without having yet been to Roatan, this book did a splendid job of taking me from the cool drizzle of the Pacific Northwest and immersing me in the warmth of this Caribbean island. The author, David Evans [a long time island resident I gather], did a really wonderful job of representing his island home through this very exciting historical novel............I feel as though I've been to Roatan and experienced vicariously the heart of the island community.

I discovered the book quite by accident while surfing the internet for information about Roatan in preparation for a trip my wife and I are planning to make to the island later this year. And frankly, I don't think I could have found a more perfect introduction to the island than "The Judas Bird". Particularly for me....... as my greatest joy is being open to sharing and learning from new cultural experiences.

I really highly recommend the book. Evans did a superb job of character development...I feel like I know these people.....much as I did the two main characters in Patrick O'Brian's, Napoleonic naval warfare Jack Aubrey series.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Stop The Judas Bird.......2005-01-14

The first thought that comes to mind is that I shall be sad when The Judas Bird ends. Normally, I wait to review a book after I've completed it; however, with The Judas Bird, I am confident in writing a review as I approach page 500.

Having been privileged to visit the island of Roatan 3 times I recognize many of the 'fictional' inhabitants because the author, David Evans, has done such a fine job with character development. The people of The Judas Bird are so very much like the real-life residents of Roatan...the islanders, the ex-pats who live there because they love the culture, and, unfortunately, the hustlers who go there to make a buck at someone else's expense.

Mr. Evans obviously loves the Roatanians and that love is exemplified in his descriptions of every day island life as well as the history of those who came centuries ago and left a little of themselves. The pirates, bucaneers, Indians, Spanish, English, Scots, and slaves who melded into today's islanders are also central to The Judas Bird's plot.

I look forward to returning to Roatan every evening as I open The Judas Bird...and I shall feel a longing when I turn the final page. It is a rousing adventure story, a love story, and an historical novel all rolled into one.

                      5 out of 5 stars a rollicking read.......2004-11-03

A marvelous time to be had: whether you are interested in pirates or anthropology or islands. And you don't have to wear your specs! I certainly hope there will be more come.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2007-10-06

This book stands out from others because goes beyond just telling you WHAT to do to manage your diabetes, it also tells you the WHY. By helping you understand the reasoning behind dietary and exercise guidelines, the author gives you the knowledge you need to make intelligent decisions when presented with situations not covered by guidelines alone. She seems to understand that everything isn't always black and white in life, and you have to make choices based on many factors.

I'm newly diagnosed. Since I'm not on any medications (and hope to keep it that way for as long as possible), the two tools I have to manage my diabetes are exercise and diet. This book addresses the diet aspect very well, while touching on the importance of exercise. It's not a scientific text, so it doesn't go into excruciating detail. It's an easy read. She helps you understand how the body works without diabetes, and then explains what happens differently when you have diabetes. You'll come to understand how different foods affect your blood glucose level - and WHY. Which allows you to understand and develop your own meal plan if you don't have access to a nutritionist. If you do, you'll better understand why your nutritionist makes the recommendations she does, and you will have the knowledge to discuss various options with her.

This may not be the first thing you want to read if you've just discovered you need to live in a way that manages your blood glucose levels. There are higher level overview books; educational websites run by the Joslin Center or American Diabetes Association; or better yet, diabetes management programs taught by diabetes educators and nutritionists at most local hospital that will give you a solid foundation. Ask your doctor about local programs if he hasn't recommended it to you already.

With that knowledge under your belt, this is an excellent book to take you down to the next level of detail.
