Book Description

W.E.B. Griffin's epic story of the Marine Corps continues with an elite fraternity known as the Raiders taking form after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Griffin's continuation of Semper Fi.......2007-08-18

In this second book of the Corps series, "Killer" McCoy is recruited by some Marine Corps brass to spy, not on the Japanese, but on Colonel Evans Carlson, an unconventional officer with connections to President Roosevelt who is forming an unconventional unit to conduct guerrilla attacks on isolated Japanese held islands. He joins the unit, reports on Carlson, plays his role in training, and participates in the first action - which is only cursorily described by Griffin, who does not seem much interested in action scenes.

There is also a continuation of the love story between McCoy and his rich girlfriend, and a new love story between Pick Pickering and the widow of a dead pilot.

There is plenty to like about Griffin's books: his attention to historical accuracy, his technical detail, his insightful characterization of the life and backgrounds of professional soldiers. Griffin is a very competent professional writer with a clear love of the people he portrays. However there are also many flaws.

The love stories, and the characters themselves, are pretty simple adolescent dreams of life. The two Marines (McCoy and Pick) live in lavish quarters. They have access to resources that few real Marines could ever have. McCoy is not just smart, brave, and a real killer Marine, he's also fluent in four languages that he picked up entirely on his own. Pick is not just a good pilot, he's a natural born aviator who can do things in his first flight in an airplane that most cannot do until the end of training. The prostitutes they visit are not just young and good looking, they're the best of the best. Their girlfriends are not just pretty, they're rich, well connected and willing to break all the social conventions to give their men what they need.

I guess this is the stuff that young soldiers dream about and never have. Griffin's books help them to dream on. One reviewer here called it soap opera, and it's hard to disagree.

For those interested in grittier and perhaps more realistic, if less technical, views of military life, have a look at Irwin Shaw's _The Young Lions_, or Norman Mailer's _The Naked and the Dead_, or James Jones' _From Here to Eternity_.

I can't deny however that it wasn't a bad read.

5 out of 5 stars Griffin is masterful!.......2007-05-07

This book is part of the Corps series and the entire series is superbly written. Griffin develops his characters so they are realistic and a twisting plot that leads the reader through the lives of the characters.

4 out of 5 stars Another CORPS Novel from WEB Griffin.......2007-03-13

THE CORPS is the best novel series I have read. It is FICTION, PEOPLE. Some complain about the re telling of the previous characters in every book. This makes the series readable non-sequentially. I bought most of the series used, out of sequence, and could easily keep up with the story. Good historical fiction is an artform, Griffin has painted his Guernica in the form of this series. It has encouraged me to delve into 20th century USMC research further. I hope they make a movie out of it someday. I would see it 50 times and buy the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Just fine as a semi-historical war novel.......2007-01-14

If you buy a W E B Griffin novel looking for shootin' and lootin' combat action, you'll probably be a little disappointed. For new readers, I strongly recommend the first two volumes of The Corps series. As an ensemble, the characters are the most compelling of Griffin's works and the stories follow a mostly historical time line. Readers whose view of WWll comes from old B&W movies may find the carousing a little rugged although the "Platoon" and "Apocalypse Now" generation will find the sex and drinking pretty conventional.

Griffin provides his readers a slightly different angle or angles, offering multiple intertwined stories which are more or less connected within the context of the whole. Sometimes, this works well, sometimes less so, depending really upon how well he manages to tie the whole thing together in the last few pages.

If this appeals to you there are a couple of other things you may want to consider before beginning your journey into Griffin's micro version of history. The most obvious is that the books are written in series form, "The Corps", Brotherhood of War", "Honorbound", etc, and while you probably will want to read them in their proper order, (numbered for your convenience, Book l, Book ll, and so on), you may find reading them straight through a bit wearisome. This is due to the Author's practice of bringing new readers up to speed on the reoccurring characters, (reading the story on Ken McCoy's nickname for the third or fourth time, if done in too short a time frame, is off putting).

Another artistic conceit is Griffin's love of the "small world phenomena", (think Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon), all of his primary cast not only know each other through family, or business associations, or mutual friends or a shared experience, they somehow manage to be tied to famous persons of the time. To enjoy the Griffin books you'll just have to suspend reality a bit and just go with it. Get used to guest appearances by "Dugout Doug MacArthur and FDR.

You also may be a little impatient with some of the editing and although most folks who read these as military or history buffs won't mind the routine technical references to uniforms, weapons, rations, and other gear, the casual reader might. I found the earliest "Corps" and "Brotherhood" stories strongest and his later work, and the "Badge of Honor" series to be a little less focused.

4 out of 5 stars detailed description of US Marines.......2006-11-26

This novel hasn't much deep in treating characters, as the protagonist, the hard Marine Ken Mc Coy and the other personages are described in a simple way of good/ bad people, the first, with Mc Coy at head, brave and fortunate soldiers, the late, coward or at less, stupid.
The strong point of this book is I think the description of US military and particularly Marine Corps in the decade of 1940's seems to me very exact and plenty of details the author had to know form first hand. A deception for me: the Thompson machine gun, I think the most beautiful light weapon is described as very difficult and worrying to use excepting for very few men with exceptional skills. Garand is described as an excellent rifle, and still better the Johnson rifle, although for some people this is debatable. Carbine M 1 is qualified as a mediocre weapon. Also there's a problem with the Kodacolor film, as Mc Coy says when he spies the Japanese, in the light of dawn this clas of film is ruined in spite of the Leica camera; I don't know the reason for that. Well, this book remembers to me a little, the excellent movie "From here to eternity".

Book Description

As an African-American woman in the predominantly white-male LAPD, homicide detective Charlotte Justice knows about heat. But now, thanks to twelve decent, pro-police jurors in Simi Valley, Los Angeles is a city rife with fires and riots. Forty-eight hours into the maelstrom, a prominent black doctor is mistaken for a car thief. Justice quickly defuses the violent confrontation, saving Dr. Lance Mitchell from a potentially savage beating by L.A.'s finest. But that's just the corner of a more ominous picture.

For the body of "Cinque" Lewis is found nearby with the good doctor's wallet beneath it. A one-time radical, Lewis murdered Justice's husband and baby girl in a hail of bullets thirteen years ago, then dropped out of sight. Navigating a terrain riddled with emotional land mines, defying the staunch LAPD hierarchy, Justice now sets out to uncover the shady truth connecting Mitchell and Lewis--but by reliving the tragic past, she may be forced to repeat it. . . .

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Series.......2002-08-19

I love a good mystery and Paula Woods has written a winner. Charlotte Justice joins the ranks with other top notch African American female sleuths Tamara Hayle, Blanche White, Star Duvall and newcomer Alex Powell. Our appropriately named heroine is a detective with the LAPD's Homicide Division; she's bright, socially aware and intuitive. Thirteen years ago her husband and baby girl were murdered in the driveway of their home providing Charlotte with a very personal interest in justice being served.

The Justice clan is quite a family, all card carrying members of the black bourgeois; brother Perris a former LAPD cop turned criminal defense attorney; his equally ambitious buppie wife Louise; Charlotte's father, a chemist who has made a small fortune manufacturing cosmetics for black women and Mom Justice, a fair-skinned daughter of an upper crust black family. Charlotte cringes at and often breaks the three Justice rules which are 1. Don't marry anyone too light, or too dark 2. Common is a word that should only be applied to stocks not people and 3. Don't even fix your mouth to say you're in love with some white person.

There are also several other equally interesting and well developed characters, for instance Steve Hightower, Charlotte's supervisor. With his black mother/Jewish father he has no idea who or what he is and is so uncomfortable around black people he's earned the nickname "incognegro." Unfortunately he's making an exception in Charlotte's case almost making Clarence Thomas look like a choir boy. We also have Aubrey Scott, a gorgeous doctor that Charlotte has known almost all her life. She is so smitten with him she can't think straight, which hopefully won't turn out to be a bad move.

Inner City Blues is set in LA during the riots that followed the Rodney King verdict. The man who stole Charlotte's life Cinque Lewis is found dead and Lance Mitchell, a doctor who works with Aubrey, is the main suspect. Charlotte hopes to be able to clear Lance's good name and also find out where Lewis has been hiding for the last thirteen years.

I can't wait to read the second book of the series "Stormy Weather". I've already ordered my copy.

5 out of 5 stars She kept me guessing..........2001-10-16

Coming from me, who usually has books, movies, etc. figured out by the middle, that's saying a lot.

Inner City Blues is a mystery that takes place during the Rodney King riots. A well-to-do doctor is accused of being involved in a string of murders, but our heroine, Charlotte, isn't so sure.
Join Charlotte in a journey to find justice.

Woods kept me on the edge of my seat most of the time (albeit from the suspense of the case Charlotte was working OR the suspense of Charlotte's life, including her love life), and had my mind working overtime.

I applaud Paula L. Woods for creating a heroine I could root for, feel sympathy for, and in the end, care for.

I am anxious to read the next book in the Charlotte Justice series, Stormy Weather.

5 out of 5 stars An Unbelievable Debut.......2001-06-30

As a mystery writer with my first novel in initial release, I have had a difficult time believing INNER CITY BLUES is genuinely Paula Woods' debut novel. It is simply too perfect. Set against the backdrop of the Los Angeles civil disturbances of the too recent past, Woods creates a perfect heroine for the police procedural of today. Charlotte Justice is struggling with emotional baggage, yet she is trying to move on with her life. She suffers from various types of discrimination as an LAPD officer, yet she is dedicated to her work. In INNER CITY BLUES, Detective Justice is faced with a baffling case mixing her personal past, the murder of her husband, with the racially turbulent situation in Los Angeles following the Rodney King verdict. Charlotte Justice is a convincing contemporary woman with internal struggles and external challenges. Ms. Woods captures her setting perfectly, and her plot is swiftly paced. INNER CITY BLUES is an excellent book, most deserving of the recognition it has received.

4 out of 5 stars Award-winning book.......2000-10-20

This novel won the 2000 Macavity Award (announced at Bouchercon 2000, Colorado.)

2 out of 5 stars Contains SPOILER -- THE ENDING.......2000-06-04

This novel is a classic "whodunnit" with intricate plotting and fine writing as noted in the reviews above. In the pentultimate chapter (p. 293 of 314) the reader finds the entire slew of clues and who's mean nothing. A crazy Vietnam vet (cliche?) bent cop appears out of thin air and fesses-up. Detective Justice doesn't solve anything. I am unlikely to read more "Detective Justice dosen't solve another case" novels.

Samuel Wagan Watson is the son of novelist Sam Watson. In 1999, he won the David Unaipon Award for unpublished Aboriginal writers. His first collection "Of muse, meandering and midnight" was highly commended in the FAW National Awards.
Itinerant Blues is your favourite car. You get in it, go places and arrive without realising how you came to be there, if you speeded or even if you drove through red lights. But you know what, it doesn't matter. The poems are set for the most part on the road in Australia, wedged between abbatoir trucks and beers at watering holes. The poems fill you with that urgency of expiring youth, and never far behind is the reminder of SWW's (and the continent's) Aboriginal heritage. You will never think of three-legged dogs the same again. While my favourite would have to "Scenes from a getaway car." SWW's poetry lets you ride "shotgun" with your feet on the dashboard and a rusty country stretching out before you to drive across.

Cassie's family is on a beach clean-up expedition in Oregon, and this time Cassie's best friend Rosalie has joined them. The two girls are ecstatic about the vacation and Cassie feels ready to tell Rosalie about her bizarre adventures . . . until Rosalie ditches her to play volleyball with a new friend.

Hurt and betrayed, Cassie wanders off down the beach and discovers a real mermaid named Galena! Before long, the sneaky sea creature magically tricks Cassie into switching bodies. Missing her family and her legs, Cassie soon learns that life under the sea isn't so great, especially when she's jailed for all of Galena's crimes. If she can't convince Galena's suspicious mermaid friends to help her switch back, Cassie may be stuck as a convicted mermaid for the rest of her life!

                  5 out of 5 stars More mystery & adventure.......2007-04-13

This story has plenty of adventure and is well-written. I recommend it to both boys & girls ages 9 and up who like adventure, mystery or sci-fi stories. Linda Singleton writes stories that keep the reader craving more.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Average Trip to the Beach............2005-12-27

Ah, a normal vacation to the beach in Oregon with her anything but normal family- well, anyway, that's what Cassie Strange thinks. Cassie even plans to tell her best friend Rosalie, who will accompany the family, all the secrets regarding her previous two adventures when Mr. Strange was in search of "Famous Fakes" for his TV show. But all good plans can go awry and somehow they usually do for Cassie. Due to some sea-witchery, and before Cassie knows it, she has switched places with Galena, a beautiful Mer-person who refuses to be called anybody's maid! Galena with her violet-blue hair is only beautiful on the outside. Soon Cassie is forced to pay for Galena's crimes in her watery world while Galena is busy ruining Cassie's relationships in the human world. Is there anyone who will believe Cassie? Is there anyone who can help separate her from a sea-witch's spell and return her to a normal girl?

This cleverly written third book in the Strange Encounters Series is the best book of all. I highly recommend it for teens, pre-teens, and even young-at-heart adults like me!

                      Book Description

"This book is about helping youngsters with learning disabilities hold onto their dreams. It is also about helping their mothers and fathers negotiate the maze of challenges that so often leaves parents and students alike feeling overwhelmed and helpless."

Writing with warmth and compassion Corinne Smith and Lisa Strick explain the causes, identification, and treatment of learning disabilities and present a wealth of practical strategies for helping youngsters become successful both in and out of the classroom:

                      * Recognizing a learning problem that won't be "outgrown"

                      * Designing an effective educational program that targets a student's strengths (not one that focuses only on weaknesses)

                      * Negotiating effectively for what your child needs at school

                      * Avoiding dead-end practices that rob students of motivation and self-esteem

                      * Managing problem behaviors at home

                      * Planning ahead for college and career

Enriched throughout with personal stories, case histories, and tips from parents who have "been there," Learning Disabilities: A to Z is an easy-to-use, up-to-the-minute resource for parents and professionals who work with children and adolescents.

                      5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful.......2005-08-29

For any parent facing the possibility or reality that their child has learning problems this is the book I would recommend. I cannot think of a question it did not answer or a facit of the topic it did not cover. It helped me enormously - I am on my second read and this time I am taking notes.

                      5 out of 5 stars Lifesaver.......2001-05-21

When my daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability I was lost at how to deal with the school system. The first time we did her IEP I did not know what to expect. There weren't any parent advocates for us at the time of her IEP. This book prepared me on how to be an advocate for my child. I educated myself about her needs from the book and had alot of confidence when meeting with the school system to plan her education for the following year. Actually I went to the meeting knowing what to ask for and how to ask for it. It worked out that the items I asked for she received. Now we constantly use the book as a reference guide when we are unsure of something. This book is good right up into adulthood when your child is choosing higher education or out in the workforce. It was a lifesaver for us and a great learning tool!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for the parents of LD child!.......2000-04-11

I borrowed this book from the library and then I'm here now to buy it for my own. This book goes through each type of disability, how they are identified and will guide you through the maze of school testing, IEP's, and how to be your child's advocate to make sure they are getting everything they should be getting from their education! Great detail on emotional growth, planning for the future and assessment measures!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful to any parent of an LD child........1999-10-29

I recommended this book to the LD Specialist at my childs school who couldn't thank me enough for finding this book so she has a sound resource to suggest to parents of LD children. This book not only helps you learn to identify your childs learning disabilities or learning difficulties, but also to understand them. Also, it provides the information you need to talk with the school knowledgeably about testing and LD services. It helps you understand what your part of this process should be and tells you what you need to know to successfully participate in the process. It gives you strategies your child can use in everyday life situations that will help him/her learn. And it helps you with information about the social and emotional needs of your growing child. I no longer feel helpless in dealing with this issue. This book has given me the knowledge, but also very importantly, concrete ways to help my child be as successful as can be.
