Book Description
With “incantatory prose” that “sweeps over the reader like a dream,” (Philadelphia Inquirer), Hoffman follows her celebrated bestseller The Probable Future, with an evocative work that traces the lives of the various occupants of an old Massachusetts house over a span of two hundred years.
In a rare and gorgeous departure, beloved novelist Alice Hoffman weaves a web of tales, all set in Blackbird House. This small farm on the outer reaches of Cape Cod is a place that is as bewitching and alive as the characters we meet: Violet, a brilliant girl who is in love with books and with a man destined to betray her; Lysander Wynn, attacked by a halibut as big as a horse, certain that his life is ruined until a boarder wearing red boots
arrives to change everything; Maya Cooper, who does not understand the true meaning of the love between her mother and father until it is nearly too late. From the time of the British occupation of Massachusetts to our own modern world, family after family’s lives are inexorably changed, not only by the people they love but by the lives they lead inside Blackbird House.
These interconnected narratives are as intelligent as they are haunting, as luminous as they are unusual. Inside Blackbird House more than a dozen men and women learn how love transforms us and how it is the one lasting element in our lives. The past both dissipates and remains contained inside the rooms of Blackbird House, where there are terrible secrets, inspired beauty, and, above all else, a spirit of coming home.
From the writer Time has said tells "truths powerful enough to break a reader’s heart” comes a glorious travelogue through time and fate, through loss and love and survival. Welcome to Blackbird House.

The walls CAN talk.......2007-08-03
Who knows just how a history is held by a house? In a desolate end of the Cape, the story begins as Coral Hadley loses her husband and young son Issac at sea in a storm. Vincent survives and takes 20 years to get home. Issac's pet blackbird flies home somehow and is seen throughout as pure white.
200 years of history and demons are kept in this house. Generations of Crosby, West, Griffon, McGuire stay. Others tarry awhile, but the history is not theirs to carry and they move on. Terrible beauty in this place, joy and terrible sadness. Birth, dead, suicide, mystery and magic, love and relationship. A fabulous piece of writing.
mesmerizing.......2007-06-05
Beautifully written stories that work as a novel about generations of people living in the same house. Lovely motifs weave their way through the years. Great read.
A house, a (sometimes white) blackbird, the color red, a span of over two hundred years, an interestingly-connected collection.......2006-11-29
A schooner and its passengers encounter a horrible storm in the first story of this collection by Alice Hoffman, author of the Oprah Book Club selection, Here on Earth, as well as almost two dozen other novels. It's hard to find fault with Hoffman's Blackbird House, either in its writing (good) or its plot (great). The well-thought out connections between successive stories create an ordered web about life in and around rural Massachusettes. My favorite, The Conjurer's Handbook, is about a man who falls in love with a Jewish interpreter and guide named Dorey while touring a camp in Germany. The interactions between strong, capable, Dorey and her love's stubbornly independent grandmother, during a visit of less than a day, are marvelous. Those few pages, along with the recurring links between characters and stories, make this a wonderful choice both for those who love short stories and for anyone who hasn't yet given short stories a try. Those who enjoy these short stories, will probably also like those of authors Alice Munro and Margaret Atwood.
Good Stuff!.......2006-08-14
I've read several of Alice Hoffman's books, and have, for the most part, enjoyed them. BLACKBIRD HOUSE is one of my favorites, mainly because the story is weaved through centuries of history, but also because of the magical element that this mysterious Cape Cod cottage has. In short, it's a fun story to read and dream about a house that has inhabitated all types of fascinating people.
Magical Tales Of A Cape Cod House.......2006-08-09
From Revolutionary times to the present-day, the lives of inhabitants of a Massachusetts house are examined with compelling awareness. Alice Hoffman weaves tales of acute happiness and profound sorrow, each rewarding in its own right. Together, they combine for a loosely-constructed novel of the changing events in the life of a house. Vivid images of blackbirds, pear trees, sweet peas, the color red and more unite these stories with an undeniable charm.
"The Edge of the World", a tale of seaman John Hadley who originally built the house in the 1700's as a gift for his wife Coral. The sailor and his two sons are lost at sea and the grieving widow and mother slogs on with only her field of sweet peas and the ghost of her son's pet blackbird to sustain her.
"The Witch of Truro," a lyrical story of red boots, pear trees, and a love story that is one-of a kind. After a horrifying event, Ruth Declan becomes a charity case for neighbors who sell her into servitude to a blacksmith named Lysander.
"The Token," features Garnet, one of the book's most endearing characters. Her love for her sister Ruby and even for her seemingly uncaring mother, Ruth of the previous story, is heartwarming and uplifting.
"Insulting the Angels" introduces Larkin, another lovable character who finds fatherhood in a most unusual way.
"Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" acquaints the reader with Violet, a physically scarred young woman who falls in love with a professor. She carries his child while he falls in love with her sister.
"Lionheart" picks up with Violet, now a mother of seven, living in Blackbird House and doting on her firstborn son, Lion. His life is charmed and, as the author tells us, he was not like anyone else and he never would be.
"The Conjurer's Handbook" is the story of Lion, Jr. who is raised at Blackbird House by his grandmother and takes a Jewish wife while abroad. Can the granddaughter-in-law ever win the love of Violet and will Violet ever accept her? This reads like a fairy tale, a wonderful, magical happy-ever-after story to cherish.
"The Wedding of Snow and Ice" is set in 1957 and televisions and canned soup have appeared as staples at Blackbird House. Grace Farrell is caught in the crossfire of impending women's liberation but it is her son Jamie whose visit to the next door neighbor's to shovel the sidewalk and deliver homemade soup that is the focal point of this haunting tale.
"India" is set in the 1960's and 1970's when a young hippie couple purchase the house and raise their two children, Kalkin and Maya. The very back-to-nature parents have given birth to children who have no interest in their mother-earth upbringing but prefer to woof down hamburgers and watch "Dallas" on tv. How one escapes and one comes to terms with her roots makes for a riveting read.
"The Pear Tree" is the story of the Stanley family. Unlike the families before, they only use the home as a summer getaway. For that reason, they never fit in with the community and their son Dean is a loner whose tragic life plays out at Blackbird House.
"The Summer Kitchen" is the story of the family of Katherine and Sam, a couple drowning in sorrow. Their lives are centered around Emma, a young daughter dying of leukemia. Their son Walker is jealous of the attention lavished on Emma and rebels in typical ten-year-old fashion.
"Wish You Were Here," the final story is perhaps the weakest. It picks up the tale of Emma more than twenty years later when she inherits Blackbird House from her parents. Emma has had an empty and unhappy life, but can she find happiness at last? Readers will also be treated to what Walker has accomplished with his life.

Move over, Hannibal Lecter. The Sandman is coming, and he's going to knock you off your perch as the world's creepiest and smartest serial killer. Chris Mooney's nail-biting, scarifying debut thriller features a fully drawn protagonist in former FBI profiler Jack Casey, whose life was shattered when another madman killed his pregnant wife before his eyes. Now Jack's a local cop on a small-town beat in Marblehead, Massachusetts, rebuilding his life with the help of a beautiful woman and a community of caring friends. But when a psychopath who seems to know everything about Jack's past as well as his present starts torturing and killing entire families in the quiet Boston suburb and then trapping his pursuers by blowing them up at the scene, Casey begins to wonder where the man the media dubbed the Sandman is getting his inside information. Is there a conspiracy at the highest levels of federal intelligence to cover up a behavioral experiment gone wrong? What's the connection between an unsolved arson at a Massachusetts home for troubled boys and the Sandman's choice of victims? And where does another ex-profiler fit in? He seems to know as much as the Sandman and offers Jack his help in solving the awful crimes.
The most important question may be whether Anthony Hopkins is available for another leading role as a psychopath. But don't wait for the inevitable big-screen treatment. Grab this bloody, violent, and mesmerizing study of psychological terror and the redemptive power of love before they call the casting director. Just don't read it on a stormy night when you're home alone. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Punctuated with one blisteringly violent and unpredictable twist after another, this pitch-perfect study of psychological terror spotlights two magnificent minds opposed in a no-holds-barred duel of cunning and depravity.
A master killer calling himself the Sandman is out for revenge. He's slaughtering not just one person at a time but whole families and whole neighborhoods, unleashing devastating explosions nationwide, and watching the horror unfold on a sophisticated network of surveillance cameras. No one knows why he is committing his crimes, or where he'll strike next.
But one man -- Jack Casey -- knows this: the Sandman wants him in the middle of the case, and wants him to suffer...
Jack was the FBI's top profiler until a psychopath's unspeakable crime shattered his life. Now Jack is starting over as a detective in a posh shoreline community outside Boston, and involved with a beautiful woman who knows nothing about his shocking past. But the Sandman has found him, and his cutting-edge electronic devices are silently monitoring Jack's every move. Knowing that a showdown is imminent, Jack turns in desperation to Malcolm Fletcher, a strange and brilliant fallen angel from the profiling unit. Fletcher is wanted by the FBI. And he possesses the key to unlocking the Sandman's demented mind.
As Jack Casey confronts evidence that the evil he's fighting may have emanated from his own side of the law, the Sandman's motivations begin to appear and a wild chase ensues. But while racing against time to save the next family, Jack is led deeper into the dark and terrifying tunnels of his fragile mind -- a place where the Sandman awaits, to deal his final master stroke of vindictive cruelty.
Deviant Ways is a breathtaking and unforgettable first novel that catapults Chris Mooney into suspense fiction's highest ranks. A harrowing journey through ordinary streets turned into scenes of unimaginable terror, it careens from cries of mass murder to whispers within the mind -- in a disturbing cat-and-mouse game of righ-teousness, loss, and vengeance.

Exit Light, Enter Night.......2005-11-15
Former FBI profiler Jack Casey has a decision to make. An important decision, a matter of life and death. Unfortunately, whatever way he chooses he may lose the most important woman in his life - for the second time. Several years earlier, Jack's pregnant wife was brutally murdered by a serial killer who forced Jack to watch. Now Jack's girlfriend Taylor is facing the same fate if Jack doesn't lay off a case. Thing is, if Jack quits now, the Sandman is going to continue killing entire families, and blowing up entire neighborhoods in his quest for revenge.
A gripping, well written, and well thought out debut novel. Chris Mooney does an excellent job at capturing the tension and suspense of the situation. An eerie look into the workings of a damaged mind. I'll be keeping my eye out for future offerings from this author.
THRILLING AND DIFFERENT.......2004-01-27
Just because it appears to be a serial killer novel, don't let that keep you from it. Mooney's debut novel is a well-crafted, intelligent and disturbing thriller. The hero Jack Casey is definitely a flawed one, but he's also multi-layered, sympathetic and brave. Maurice Fletcher is also quite flawed, but his cool efficiency and participation in the hunt for the Sandman is quite forceful. There are several breathtaking chases, some nerve-wracking suspense, and even though it verges on being ludicrous and unbelievable, Mooney writes so well it carries you right along with it.
One peeve, though: late in the book we meet a character in a wheelchair named Matt; he's taken care of, but his friend Phil is never clearly explained. An editor's faux pax???
Any way, I highly recommend this adrenaline charged thriller.
not deviant enough.......2003-11-08
DEVIANT WAYS is an inventive enough thriller-- the killer knows technology and how to use it to maximum effect--, but Credibility takes an extended Caribbean cruise along about halfway through the novel; one begins to wonder how this psychopath is able to overpower whole families with seemingly effortless ease and rig up all these elaborate devices undetected, especially when he blows up a whole neighborhood. The characters aren't as convincing as they could be (compare the FBI agents to those in Connelly's THE POET), especially the killer who, for the most part, remains just a shadowy figure throughout most of the novel. The ending is fairly decent, but if only the rest of the novel had been as twisted and creepy as Chapter 24, he could have really had something.
PET PEEVE DEPT.: Add Mooney to the growing list of authors-- Michael Connelly, Christopher Reich, and Robert Walker among them-- who think "ahold" is a word.
Mooney ý Deviant Ways.......2003-05-28
This thriller was decently written but there wasn't much original about it. The story is typical - serial killer terrorizes families, cop with demons of his own becomes obsessed with tracking him down. In other words, this is nothing new. If you're into the whole serial killer thriller genre, you might enjoy this but only if you've exhausted the better novels out there. Otherwise, skip it.
Great book... couldnt stop reading it!.......2003-04-15
It was a great suspence thriller. If your the type of person who enjoys a good mind game, you'll like this book. It's by-far one of my faviorites. It wasn't at all gruesome, but it did have one scene that was a little graphic and it couldve been done with out it. It is a must read!!
Customer Reviews:
Page Turner.......2006-12-13
I don't usually read this type of story. I am more a historical mystery, or classics reader. But this book was very good. I did finish it in 2 days even though it usally takes me an average of 10 days to finish a book. A page turner, scary but not terrorizing. Hero was well developed & I could empathize with him. Ditto for many of the other charecters. End was good not super but don't let this disuade you. Well worth reading even if it is not "your cup of tea".
Entertaining, But Shallow.......2004-06-28
Jack Paris was interesting, but as a main character, he seemed predictable. The story was engaging without giving us a clear picture of why someone would engage in such horrific acts.
I think this plot was very well thought out, but the author fails to provide enough detail for us to understand the demons that would lead someone to commit these crimes. The reader is left unsure of exactly who did what to whom, as if Montanari was told he only had five pages to wrap up the story. It shows a lot of promise for future endeavors. Good debut thriller by a veteran writer.
Tricky.......2003-09-07
A first novel that holds your interest, but is sometimes too tricky for its own good. Holds promise for future stories.
Above average murder mystery.......2002-05-14
This is the second of Mr. Montanari's books I have read. This title introduces the jaded cop, Jack Paris. His pursuit of a pair of vicious serial killers makes for exciting reading. This is not a book for the faint hearted, since there are graphic descriptions of the murders and the sexual tone of the story is quite explicit. The characters are well developed and believable, with Jack Paris portrayed as a middle-age cop with a lot of baggage. There is also a plot line that is left unresolved that stretches the credibly of the story. Otherwise, if you like a tense, exciting, hard-to-put down murder/cop novel, this one is for you.
A Must Read.......2002-01-20
Very Dark, Very Erotic and Very Intense. This book had my pulse in my throat , definately not for the faint hearted looking forward to reading the next Jack Paris book. Well done Richard.

Food for thought, and the soul ..........2002-10-01
This book explains that healthy intimate relationships aren't about the romantic notions portrayed by the media or in the fairytales we all read as children, but rather about knowing ourselves, showing up, being authentic, and speaking our truth in a caring yet honest way. Authentic Heart provides a refreshingly realistic take on mature relationships, and is written in a very clear and easily digestible manner. You definitely don't need to be familiar with Buddhist philosophy to get a lot out of this book, but if you are, you'll likely resonate with much of the perspective here. I loved this book so much that I bought a second copy to pass around to all my friends!
Ronald Brill, author, "Emotional Honesty & Self-Acceptance".......2001-03-23
If there is ever a Pulitzer Prize for a book about love, "The Authentic Heart" should win hands down. I have great admiration for John Amodeo's gentle yet powerful prose and lively writing style. I am inspired beyond words how often and beautifully he illuminates by example the significance of risking vulnerability and emotional honesty to achieve emotional intimacy in relationships. There is a genuine, moving wisdom in this book that speaks to people of all ages, not just those approaching or in mid-life.
Essential reading for boomers.......2001-03-01
I have long been an admirer of John Amodeo's work. A long-time therapist and counselor, he understand the dynamics of intimate relationships as well as anyone I know. In addition, he is an excellent writer--clear, thoughtful, probing. This book is timely. The boomer generation, especially, with its history of shattered relationship, broken dreams, and burned-out illusions, will benefit from its careful and thorough laying out of the eightfold path to authentic love. Amodeo shows us that real love, which means a deep spiritual and emotional connection, true friendship, and a healthy measure of chemistry and romance, is possible. It seems to me that this book is an indispensable guide for anyone seeking such a union.
A must read for those longing for authentic love. Enjoy!.......2001-02-09
As more of us boomers reach middle age, we reflect on the love relations we have and those we've left behind, and I've found in myself and friends that there's a yearning for authentic love, a longing to deepen in oneself and also connect intimately with one's wife or lover, family and friends. Yet, for many of us the baggage of persistent habits of thought and behavior, including our young love romantic idealism, distances us from that which we most want. John Amodeo with great clarity and sensitivity speaks from the heart in his new book, The Authentic Heart : An Eightfold Path to Midlife Love, talks to us as a wise friend, and takes us on a mindful journey along an "eightfold path", which reveals workable, livable principles about how to enjoy an authentic life in relationship. What a relief it is to know that such a book has been written and serves us all as a friendly handbook for our relational journey. I highly recommend you include John Amodeo's book in your library of most valued references. Just be sure to read it first! For those of us that have struggled with betrayal in relationship, I also want to mention John's previous work, Love and Betrayal, which intelligently and compassionately sheds light on that important subject.
What a wonderful book!.......2001-01-28
I have been blessed to have been able to call the author friend for nearly 30 years. The depth of his knowledge and insight has been a source of inspiration and comfort to me on untold occasions. Now he has distilled and laid to paper a life's work of study so that anyone who chooses to can share in his heartfelt wisdom, as I and his many friends have done throughout the years. What a joy it was for me to read this book. Those who are seeking to improve their life and relationships will find many workable answers here. What are the key ingredients of love? Of trust? What are the five blocks to effective communication? And how can we be emotionally honest with others in a gentle way? Dr. Amodeo explains in vivid prose. But even those who are not seeking to improve their life and relationships, even those who read for the satisfaction of affirming their own good fortune in love, may be surprised to find the answers to questions they haven't yet thought to ask. What a wonderful book! Thank you Dr. Amodeo. Thank you, my friend John.
