In 1843, a 16-year-old Canadian housemaid named Grace Marks was tried for the murder of her employer and his mistress. The sensationalistic trial made headlines throughout the world, and the jury delivered a guilty verdict. Yet opinion remained fiercely divided about Marks--was she a spurned woman who had taken out her rage on two innocent victims, or was she an unwilling victim herself, caught up in a crime she was too young to understand? Such doubts persuaded the judges to commute her sentence to life imprisonment, and Marks spent the next 30 years in an assortment of jails and asylums, where she was often exhibited as a star attraction. In Alias Grace, Margaret Atwood reconstructs Marks's story in fictional form. Her portraits of 19th-century prison and asylum life are chilling in their detail. The author also introduces Dr. Simon Jordan, who listens to the prisoner's tale with a mixture of sympathy and disbelief. In his effort to uncover the truth, Jordan uses the tools of the then rudimentary science of psychology. But the last word belongs to the book's narrator--Grace herself.

Book Description

In Alias Grace, bestselling author Margaret Atwood has written her most captivating, disturbing, and ultimately satisfying work since The Handmaid's Tale. She takes us back in time and into the life of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the nineteenth century.

Grace Marks has been convicted for her involvement in the vicious murders of her employer, Thomas Kinnear, and Nancy Montgomery, his housekeeper and mistress. Some believe Grace is innocent; others think her evil or insane. Now serving a life sentence, Grace claims to have no memory of the murders.

Dr. Simon Jordan, an up-and-coming expert in the burgeoning field of mental illness, is engaged by a group of reformers and spiritualists who seek a pardon for Grace. He listens to her story while bringing her closer and closer to the day she cannot remember. What will he find in attempting to unlock her memories? Is Grace a female fiend? A bloodthirsty femme fatale? Or is she the victim of circumstances?

5 out of 5 stars Murderess or Minx?.......2007-03-13

Did she do it? You will have to decide, or rather wonder, yourself, since Margaret Atwood never gives it away. This was a fascinating, slowly-to-be-savored format for an historical fiction novel. I just thought it was terrific. It read like a classic. This was my first Margaret Atwood novel to read, but I certainly plan to read more. Different and extremely well done.

3 out of 5 stars Must be one of Atwood's "mild, lukeworm" works..........2007-01-25

I love some of Atwood's earlier works - Cat's Eye, Robber Bride, Handmaid's Tale - because of the intensity that was apparent in each novel. But Alias Grace just didn't have that impact that I expected from Atwood's writing. I still admire Atwood as a writer, but I wouldn't choose this book to represent her "essence" to someone who doesn't know much about her.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely writing.......2006-12-19

If you're looking for a book to grab you from the first paragraph and take you on a fast and furious ride, this is NOT the novel for you. However, if you're looking for a long, slow, languorous well-told story to curl up with in front of the fire on a lazy Sunday or relax in the back yard hammock---buy this book! IMO, this is Atwood at her best. Her words and imagery are simply gorgeous.

4 out of 5 stars History, Mystery, and Murder.......2006-11-29

This book is a whodunnit with no answer at the end. It is a fictionalized account of an actual convicted (and later pardoned) murderess named Grace Marks. Grace was a 16-year old servant accused of killing her employer and his mistress in the mid-1880s.

Margaret Atwood has done an excellent job of researching the events surrounding the murder and the time period that she describes. She changes no facts, but as history was not as well documented in the 1800s, the facts are few. This is where Ms. Atwood takes the poetic license that makes this such a good book to read.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars alias grace.......2006-11-04

I was drawn into the book immediately, and loved it through and through. The prose is so elegant and the words so beautifully precise that you hardly notice you are reading - it is like being bodily transported into 19th century Canada. Highly recommended for its engaging prose, mesmerizing story line and characters you immediately come to care about.

From an author whose "twists and turns keep you turning the pages" (Denver Post) comes a brand-new mystery series starring Maxie McNabb-an independent retiree whose adventures across the country in her motor home are destined for murderous roadblocks.

At 63, Maxie is cruising down the Alaska Highway in her brand-new Winnebago. She's always been a gypsy at heart-and with her mini-dachshund at her side, and the open road ahead, she's never been happier. But before her exploration of the Lower Forty-eight gets underway, Maxie needs to figure out who burglarized her friend's Colorado home-and why. But the closer Maxie gets to solving the puzzle, the more it becomes chillingly clear that her friend's life isn't the only one on the line...

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-06-09

While maybe not as meaty as the Jesse Arnold/Iditarod Alaskan mysteries, this new series by Sue Henry is nevertheless a delight. It features indominatable 60-something widow Maxie McNabb, whom we met in Alaska, and her wonderful mini-dachshund Stretch. The two are traveling companions in a small winebago, and if this doesn't make you want to run out and buy one immediately, nothing will.

In this first in the three-book series (so far), Maxie and Stretch travel down to Colorado (much interesting travel lore among the way) to visit Maxie's oldest and dearest friend Sarah, who is dying of a heart ailment. Not only is it to be a goodbye visit, but Sarah urgently needs to confide something important to Maxie--what, Maxie does not know.

When Maxie reaches her friend's house, she finds to her great sadness that Sarah is comatose in the hospital; apparently, her illness was quicker than expected. Sarah is able to briefly wake up and try to communicate, but her words do not make sense--and she does not last long enough to explain.

Grief-stricken and confused, Maxie is left to put together the pieces--especially when it is found that the death was not natural.

A delicious story, light on mystery but simply a delight to read.

3 out of 5 stars Good RV mystery.......2007-05-25

Sixty-three-year-old Maxie McNabb leaves Alaska in her new Winnebago RV with her mini-dachshund, Stretch, to go see her friend Sarah Nunamaker in Grand Junction, Colorado.

When she arrives, she finds her friend in the hospital and barely conscious and Sarah's house broken into with her bedroom being the worst. When she came, she knew Sarah was on her last days, but is still heartbroken when Sarah dies without Maxie really being able to speak to her. Sarah had tried to talk, but most of it didn't make sense.

Unbeknownst to Maxie, Sarah, her best friend since college, had a baby during college. Maxie just can't believe it, but once she sets eyes on this newfound child of Sarah's she knows it is true. Plus an old flame of Sarah's and Maxie's appears on the scene. Sarah's son, Alan, is very angry and often causes an uproar.

Maxie knows that Sarah was good at hiding things and must find the document she told Maxie she'd written to explain everything. Can she find this document and figure out what is going on before she finds herself needing help?

I have never read anything else by this author. I really liked the characters and the fact that the protagonist travels in an RV. Great idea. Hopefully I will get to read more in this series to see how Maxie develops over time. I enjoyed her spunk and adventure! I recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not a too bad mystery. Interesting enough to keep reading on........2006-10-30

This was my first Sue Henry novel, and though I've read better, this one stayed interesting enough to read it through.

Maxie, a 63-year-old widow is a traveler. She just purchased a new Winnebago and is taking a trip this time to see her friend Sarah who is not doing so well and on her last days. Starting from her home in Alaska, she and her four-legged companion Stretch, (a dachsund), head for Grand Junction Colorado.
What she finds when she gets there is surprising-someone has clearly broken into Sarah's home, and Sarah herself has just landed in the hospital in ICU. So calling the police right away Maxine reports the burglar and the case is filed. But this is not the only time it happens-foul play is up. Sarah has a son Alan who is a very angry sort, and comes and goes. And then there was this unknown child that Sara never told Maxie about, Jamie Stover, who was a child she had given up many years ago. This child had come back into Sara's life, bitter with her, and wanting her share of the estate. The case takes a turn then of suspected foul play, and it is obvious that Sarah died sooner because someone tried to smother her, which made her heart condition worse as determined by the autopsy later in the book. And in the meantime, Maxi is in grave danger being followed by a someone. But whom? And why are they seeking revenge connected with Sara's past?

      5 out of 5 stars Introducing a motorhoming sleuth.......2005-12-13

The Serpents Trail is the first in a new mystery series by Alaska author Sue Henry, starring retiree and avid RVer Maxie McNabb - an independent widow whose adventures in her Minnie Winnie motorhome are destined for murderous twists and turns.

Maxie and her mini-dachshund, Stretch, were introduced in Dead North (2002), the 8th book in Henry's established 10-book series starring Alaskan musher Jessie Arnold. In this first book of her own spinoff series, 63-year-old Maxie is cruising down the Alaska Highway in a brand-new Winnebago. She's always been a gypsy at heart - and with her dog at her side in their cozy home on wheels and the open road ahead, she's never been happier.

Maxie's traveling from her home base in Homer, Alaska, to visit her onetime college roommate who is terminally ill in Grand Junction, Colorado. But she finds the house ransacked and Sarah delirious and near death in the hospital. Sarah insists she has left a secret message in the house for Maxie to find.

When Sarah dies, Maxie learns that she is her friend's executor. Not only must she find Sarah's secret, but she also needs to cope with Sarah's surly adopted son; an illegitimate daughter that she never knew existed; a mutual friend from college who has always loved Sarah; and the discovery that Sarah did not die of natural causes.

Liberally sprinkled with Maxie's down-to-earth observations about RVing, life and the characters she meets, The Serpent's Trail is an entertaining, well-plotted "cozy" mystery. Also evident are the author's trademarks - detailed descriptions of natural landscapes and careful research.

      3 out of 5 stars Lame.......2005-08-21

Visions of Angela Lansbury or an aging Nancy Drew danced in my head as I read this sweet story. Engaging in spite of its neatly tied up implausible plot, it offers a change of pace from the heavier mysteries on the shelves. I did wonder though if Winnebago and Jameson paid royalties to Ms. Henry for the promotion that she afforded them....

4 out of 5 stars logic over superstition, light over darkness..........2006-06-03

Twenty-seven years old Jack Collins, weary of being a mathematics graduate teaching aide and in dire need of an income, answers an odd advertisement and ends up working for Merlin the Magician, who has gotten with the times and currently fronts himself as a prognosticator of stocks and bonds. Merlin explains that Jack's new position is nothing less than being the champion of humanity, selected to face off against the ever-marshalling forces of darkness. But no sooner does Jack hire on than Merlin and his office aide Megan (who we quickly find is more than a mere office aide) are kidnapped, leaving Jack to fend for himself against the minions of darkness, armed with just an enchanted ATM card. To make it worse, Jack learns that there just might be a malefic Old God - to wit, the Lord of the Lions - back in town. Add to that the fact that he becomes suspected of being a drug lord by the campus head of security and that his students can't seem to grasp the fundamentals of Calculus 101...well, Jack's got problems.

Included in Robert Weinberg's body of work is a lighthearted urban fantasy series starring Jack Collins, comprising of two novels titled The Logical Magician and A Calculated Magic. There was to be a third - titled Subtract One Sorcerer - but unfortunately was never published, due to changing market tastes. In the series, Weinberg supposes that the human collective subconscious, down thru the ages, powered with the sheer power of belief, has made all its superstitions come into actual being. Thus, in this modern age of reason and technology, there are thousands of mythical and supernatural creatures co-existing in silence amongst us.

The main character has a mathematics background and a certain knowledge of fantasy literature, and he uses those assets and his innate common sense to find solutions grounded in logic to exploit the given weaknesses of his various magical adversaries. The methods Jack employs in eventually triumphing over a vampire and a will-o-the-wisp, in particular, showcase his practical savvy.

Not as outright goofy or pun-filled as Robert Asprin's Skeeve and Aahz series or Piers Anthony's Xanth novels, A Logical Magician (and its sequel) still lets loose its share of comedic moments while maintaining a certain gravitas to the proceedings. A Logical Magician is diverting stuff and is definitely worth a look-see. I myself give it 3 and a half stars.

A word of caution: this book was later reprinted as A Modern Magician. Buyer, beware.

3 out of 5 stars Joint Review of A Logical Magician and A Calculating Magic.......2002-07-26

This is an entertaining and lighthearted pair of fantasy novels. As with other books of this type, the basic premise is that magical and mythical creatures continue to live among us. Weinberg finds witty ways to integrate the magical into ordinary life. The magician Merlin is a financial consultant, wood nymphs inhabit shopping malls, etc. The hero is a young mathematician who uses logic and knowledge of modern society to vanquish the villains. Of these two books, A Calculating Magic is the more amusing with better character development and clever use of Norse and Arabic mythology. The major joke at the end of A Calculating Magic is particularly clever. These books are hard to find but well worth a few dollars in a used book store.

4 out of 5 stars Getting Lost Has Never Been Better.......2001-08-18

I first came across this book at the age of 13; a friend had lent it to me after buying it from the drugstore as an impulse purchase at the counter bookrack. At first I simply regarded it as some nightly reading material that would put me to sleep and nothing more. As I delved deeper into the novel I found myself gladly lost in Weinberg's characters and scenarios. Weinberg was able to take the fantasy of every science fiction fan and turn it into a lovable story filled with conspiracy, adventure and intrigue. Unfortunately I have not been able to find this novel again after my first time reading it. My friend has since become yet another alienated soul from my childhood and the novel is long lost on the bookshelf of a bitter old girlfriend. But fond memories of reading this novel and enjoying every time consuming minute remain. Every aspect from when Jack Collins steps into Merlin's modern yet modest office to when he found himself being seduced by a fantastic Succubus has been engraved into my memory. It's unfortunate that I can no longer find any copy of this novel, especially now at an older, and hopefully wiser, age when I can better appreciate what was already a marvelous story to begin with. With plenty of references to old Fantasy style characters, and environments only read about alongside such devices as knights, dragons and maidens, Weinberg creates for us an idiot's guide to fantasy novels. Placing, what we call, Science Fiction into reality and having a logical and practical man play the part of the hero gives us the opportunity to listen to him ask questions about the plot rather than leave the SF challenged in the dark. Definitely a good book you can't put down and walk away from.

5 out of 5 stars Magic all the way.............2000-05-11

I came across this book in my local Safeway, and since then it has earned an extremely special place in my bookshelf as well as in my heart!

I have rated this book 5 stars, but if I were given the option I would put hundreds more, to do "A Logical Magician" justice.

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a condition affecting at least one in twenty children who experience sensations in taste, touch, sound, sight, smell, movement, and body awareness in a vastly different manner from how other children their ages do. What may be typical activities for most kids are a daily struggle that may result in social, emotional, or academic problems.

Dr. Lucy Jane Miller, the best-known SPD researcher in the world, brings together a lifetime of study to teach parents and others the signs and symptoms of SPD and its four major subtypes; ways the disorder is diagnosed and treated; sensory strategies for living with the condition; and methods to help SPD kids thrive.

5 out of 5 stars Good additional reading after the Out of Sync Child.......2007-10-05

This book helps parents learn more about the research and treatment for Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). I like the detailed descriptions of fictional children who have different types of SPD.

This book is like a bible for parents with a sensory child. It answered the questions I had as well as reiterated concepts adapted from OT. It is truly one of the best books I've read.

            5 out of 5 stars Sensational Kids.......2007-09-04

This is an excellent resource for learning the basics of sensory integration and sensory processing disorder. Useful for parents, teachers, and any professional working with preschool or school-age children who have sensory differences.

5 out of 5 stars Book teaches you a LOT about your child AND YOURSELF!!!.......2007-04-05

I have not even read all the book yet, but I can tell you that it has taught me a LOT about the reasons why my child is doing the things she is. It has taught me a LOT about MYSELF and MY sensory issues. It is an AWESOME book to get.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for working with children with autism and other special needs.......2007-01-07

I am an occupational therapist and always look for resources for parents and teachers who have children with special needs. This book is written by one of the "gurus" of sensory processing. The information is based on significant research as well as extensive clinical experience of Lucy Jane Miller. It contains the theoretical information which explains sensory processing problems, but it is very user friendly. It is easy to understand and doesn't just explain sensory processing, but provides strategies for helping a child with the problem as well. Full of information that can really make a difference. Highly recommended!

THis book is wonderful for making social studies come alive in your classroom. I like that the activities are open-ended and can be used over and over again with a freshness that the students enjoy. They get very excited about these activities. It helps make social studies fun---try it you will like it!

5 out of 5 stars Social Studies Activities Kids Can't Resist: 40 Sensational.......2003-03-20

This book contains a wide variety of activities that will make social studies fun. I love the materials list for each activity and the authors created templates or gave examples for all of the projects. While the title states there are 40 ideas, the "alternative activities" sections easily double that number. The ideas are open-ended and teachers will find a million ways to use these easy-to-follow ideas. Any elementary teacher who needs to add sparkle to a lesson will find this book a great investment!

5 out of 5 stars Not Just Social Studies Activities!.......2003-03-14

I teach fifth grade, and my students had gotten bored with the same social studies activities. Then I stumbled across this book. This book's activites teach more than just social studies skills. Math, art and creative writing are part of a number of these lessons.

My students have enjoyed making historical biography paper dolls. This activity has students make paper dolls with clothes that would be appropriate for the time in history being studied. Then they write a brief biography about their doll describing the doll's daily live experiences.

Another popular activity was 'I won!'. Each student wins an imaginary $10,000 trip for two. Students can choose where they want to go. Then research how much their trip will cost and create a budget.

With activites like these, I don't dread teaching social studies any more!

            5 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource.......2003-03-06

It can be difficult to think of new and creative ideas when teaching students fulltime. Yet, when you have resources like this book, you have a place to look for creative ideas. This book is a wonderful resource for teachers who want their children to learn through personal experience.

I highly recommend this book for classroom teachers.
