1 out of 5 stars Not a whole lot about honor.......2006-07-31

Well, to begin with, this book is about people engaging in sex acts, a lot of sex acts; so I guess I'd say it's probabably female pornography. There is a plot, sort of. It winds in and out of the story like a sine wave; but at each loop of the wave, there's is another sex episode. It gets tedious. The author's premise seems to be that if there are enough of those episodes, the hero(?) and heroine(?) will become "bonded" so to speak. I'm not sure that is to be taken for granted; I'm sure there are many ways to become emotionally bonded, and the repetition of the physical bonding becomes nothing but boring.

2 out of 5 stars Soooo Sad........zzzzzzzzz...............2006-03-31

It's just so so sad, so sad that I wasn't able to finish this book, I just hate it when this happens. It start out okay, I liked the intro, the 1st - 20 pages were interesting, liked Alicia and Adriana alot, then it went downhill from there, it just totally lost me. I kept telling myself over and over that it will get better but....I just didn't care anymore. I spent three days reading this, have not reached 1/2 of the book, then told myself, it just wasn't worth it, i could've read and finished two books during those three days i spent reading this one. This is my first Stephanie Laurens book and it will definitely be my last. Should've listened to the reviews but was too stubborn, thought it might be different for me but...zzzzz.

4 out of 5 stars Tony and Alicia-SPOILERS.......2005-04-09

Favorite scene with Alicia-
Being kidnapped by the enemy.

Favorite scene with Tony-
Finding information about why Ruskin was killed.

Together-
Finally telling each other I love you.

What did you like about Alicia-
Her love for her family, going so far as to pretend to be someone she's not to protect and save them.

What didn't you like about Alicia-
There really wasn't anything I didn't like about Alicia, although I didn't like that she was willing to be just his mistress. She didn't think Tony really loved her because she thought he was just saying the words. So she couldn't bring herself to tell him that she loved him.

What did you like about Tony-
His love for Alicia and her family. Putting their safety and happiness first.

What didn't you like about Tony-
He waited till the end of the book to tell her he loved her, although he had said it in French. Still, he led her to believe she was only good enough to be his mistress.

If I had to cast Alicia, I'd cast Reese Witherspoon.
If I had to cast Tony, I'd cast Julian McMahon.

3 out of 5 stars Not So Much About Honor..........2004-10-04

I have conflicting feelings about this book. The subplot takes up too many pages and throws the main plot of discovering and building a love match between the main characters off balance. For about the first 100 pgs SL establishes the main characters personal backgrounds and details their thoughts, hopes and dreams - she spends too much time setting multiple stages for the reader. The seductive and intimate sex scenes are deeply personal, express heart rendering intimacy between a man and woman falling in love. SL's descriptive love scenes are rich and stir the imagination; drawing you yearningly into the lover's bedroom.

However, I found the subplot filled with a lot of wordy discussions and lacking true who-done-it mystery suspense. It was too easy to figure out; which was why I had difficulty believing honored retired veteran spies to the Crown had such difficulty identifying who the murderer was.

I felt a big hooray for the haut of the ton uniting against being manipulated by unsubstantiated rumors against Alicia and scandalous encounters with the "police" that could have crushed her family. Although I don't condone deceiving people, I did feel compassion for Alicia and her orphaned family and was grateful for the support Tony provided through his social status, name and connections at the Bastion Club and its members. I felt this was more of a case of Tony's use of his nobility and manipulation of his peers' respect and love for his godmother and mother vs "honor" as a gentleman to do the right thing and marry Alicia. I didn't really mind Tony appointing himself Alicia's and her family's protector, because he was not rude, pushy or demeaning towards Alicia, however Tony was definitely domineering in and out the bedroom. Also, two thumbs up for Alicia on her frugality in supporting and managing her family affairs and their appearance in the eyes of the public. No one knew just how penniless they really were.

Overall I did not feel "romantic" about the characters of this book; however it sizzles with foreplay and is dripping with sex. Tony and Alicia did not do a lot of talking to learn about each other, trust or understand one another beyond the bedroom or ballrooms. Yet what they did learn about each in the bedroom and ballroom was "Mmm, mmm, good."

5 out of 5 stars SIZZLING SENSUALITY.......2004-08-08

I have read all Stephanie Laurens' books. Some have been hits, some have been misses. This one is a hit!

Book One of this new Bastion Club series was a good story and a good heroine. Book Two combines a great heroine and a sensuality that begins in chapter one and doesn't miss a beat throughout the entire novel.

The series revolves around seven English spies, now off-duty, who bond over finding their own wives instead a letting society matrons manipulate their choices. Naturally, each book will be about one of the men, his wife search, and a mystery he solves using his spy skills. It works for me!

The only three drawbacks of this novel are characteristic Laurens' style: the "mirror sex," the heroine's "teach me" excuse to have sex, and a mystery that takes a little too long to resolve. With that said, however, the mirror sex in this novel does not seem contrived as in some Laurens' novels, and the heroine's confidence and ability to defend herself against the villian is inspiring. I liked Alicia's spunk, resourcefulness, determination, self-preservation, leadership, and tenderness -- a great character!

This book even brings back Jack and Kit from "Captain Jack's Woman" -- a book that causes second-degree hand burns while reading it! Laurens gives "A Gentleman's Honor" the same sizzle treatment...minus "Jack's" table sex!

One of the brightest stars of romantic fiction, the incomparable New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens flings wide the gates of the Bastion Club -- an elite society of unmarried London gentlemen dedicated to determining their own matrimonial futures. Here, in one volume, are two of the author's most captivating and sensuous novels: a "prequel" that brilliantly sets the stage for the popular series and an early Bastion delight.

    Captain Jack's Woman

Rebellious Kathryn "Kit" Cranmer finds adventure at the head of a rag-tag band of smugglers. But her dashing, ruthless rival, the notorious Captain Jack, rules the night -- and becoming this bold man of mystery's woman will carry Kit to new heights of excitement beyond anything she's ever dreamed.

    A Gentleman's Honor

Anthony Blake, Viscount Torrington, believes Alicia Carrington when the frightened young beauty swears she's innocent in the murder of the villain who was blackmailing her. But it is more than honor that compels the handsome nobleman to protect her, and to do everything in his seductive power to make Alicia his.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely and excellent romance, but lacking for plot.......2004-10-15

No offense to Laurens, but I'm a new fan and a better plot would've pulled me in more. Spy plots are usually good, but the tediousness of their search, in both books, is distracting when you keep asking yourself when they're going to solve it and move on, not to mention how in almost all spy novels the villain is out to get the heroine. That can definitely wear on your nerves when it's constantly repeated.

On the other hand, the actual romance parts were some of the best I've seen. With Leonora and Tristan, their role reversal of reluctant to marry was a pleasant twist. In this case it was the woman who had to be convinced to get married and Tristan trying to compel her to do so.

Tony and Alicia's romance was a little more standard, bad communication and different ideals, but it all came together in the end. There was a lovely scene in the rain near the end that seemed like the perfect romantic confession setting.

If you like Laurens, go ahead and read this. It'll keep you hooked and wanting to see what happens to the other members of the Bastion Club, I know I can't wait for Charles' story!

What do professional scouts look for in major league prospects? What is the life of a baseball scout really like? Rip Tutor was born in Rockingham, North Carolina, on April 13, 1913. At age 12 he owned a textile mill baseball team courtesy of his father, a master mechanic, who made wood bats for the team. Tutor maintained his love for baseball through high school, college and a short career in the minor leagues. A shoulder injury incurred as an amateur boxer curtailed Tutor's dream of playing in the major leagues. Scouting proved to be the next best thing. He was the first scout to file a report on future Hall of Fame pitcher, Jim "Catfish" Hunter. He signed Jim Presley, who became an American League Allstar. With close to 47 years in the profession with the Mariners, Braves, Angels, Orioles and Athletics, Tutor was honored in 2001 as East Coast Scout of the Year. He was inducted into several scouting halls of fame and was still an active scout with the Atlanta Braves when he passed away late in 2004. Scout's Honor, suitable for all ages, gives a rare glimpse behind the scenes of America's favorite pastime.

            Book Description

At a time of astonishing confusion about what it means to be a man, Brad Miner has recovered the oldest and best ideal of manhood: the gentleman. Reviving a thousand-year tradition of chivalry, honor, and heroism, The Compleat Gentleman provides the essential model for twenty-first-century masculinity.

Despite our confusion, real manhood is not complicated. It is an ancient ideal based on service to one's God, country, family, and friends—a simple but arduous ideal worthy of a lifetime of struggle.

Miner's gentleman stands out for his dignity, restraint, and discernment. He rejects the notion that one way of behaving is as good as another. He belongs to an aristocracy of virtue, not of wealth or birth. Proposing neither a club nor a movement, Miner describes a lofty code of manly conduct, which, far from threatening democracy, is necessary for its survival.

Miner traces the concept of manliness from the jousting fields of the twelfth century to the decks of the Titanic. The three masculine archetypes that emerge—the warrior, the lover, and the monk—combine in the character of the "compleat gentleman." This modern knight cultivates a martial spirit in defense of the true and the beautiful. He treats the opposite sex with the passionate respect required by courtly love. And he values learning in the pursuit of truth—all with the discretion, decorum, and nonchalance that the Renaissance called sprezzatura.

The Compleat Gentleman is filled with examples from the past and the present of the man our increasingly uncivilized age demands.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gandhi or Galahad?.......2007-09-25

Miner has provided an excellent description of concepts of honor and chivalry and "gentlemanly" behavior across the last two thousand plus years. The discussion is wide-ranging, from Trappist monks to stoic philosophers to medieval knights and modern warriors. A particularly telling point came towards the end, where Miner comes to pick up his son at school. It turns out that his son has been involved in a fight. He asks the teacher who started it, and she looks at him in disbelief. She wants to know if it matters. Miner replies that it does. He wants his sons to emulate Galahad, not Gandhi. He wants sons who are ready to decide what is right and to defend it. That is not, of course, to say that Gandhi's ideas might not have been important and relevant, but perhaps not applicable to this situation (in Miner's opinion). There is a difference between aggression and self-defense. There is a difference between being devoted to justice and being a bully. A "compleat gentleman" is dedicated to defending the weak, and standing up for what is right. He has manners, but not in a foppish manner. He is generous. He gives of himself, financially, emotionally and physically, but not in a "showy" manner. A few reviewers have been upset that Miner did not serve in Vietnam. He discloses this fact openly, and does not beat it to death, and regrets his decision. In any way that one looks at this, should he be punished for the rest of his life for the decision made then? The concepts of the book are important, and not momentary failings (or not, given the nature of the conflict) of the author. The only issue I might take with the author is on his assessment of dueling. It is mostly disparaged, where other scholars of the topic have considered it an indispensible "final rememdy" of an insult to honor. Some consideration of this topic would have been appreciated. My six year old son will get his own copy as soon as he can read at this level.

4 out of 5 stars The A Rather Compleat Book.......2006-07-02

The first 3/4's of the book is mostly historical documentation and facts about knights and the concepts of chivalry as they were and as they are commonly (and often wrongly) interpreted. For those of you who love history you'll love it. For those of you who don't, bear with it because it all comes together at the end. It's also presented in a way that's interesting and not just a textbook drone. While I don't agree with absolutely everything Miner had to say he got me thinking and that's what mattered. A refreshing read for anyone interested in the truer workings of manners and chivalry. I'd recommend it. You won't be able to put it down.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, challenging, enlightening.......2006-06-13

What does it mean to be a gentleman? That is the concept that Miner seeks to explore and does so by examining history, delving into the great concept of chivalry and the time-honored traditions that have transcended generations and cultures to give a foundational view of the concept of a gentleman. While some cultures in some eras associated the concept of the gentleman with social status, title, wealth or birth; Miner argues that the concept is better represented by the concepts of true nobility - character, dignity, restraint and discernment.

Miner is a lover of history and traces the concept of manliness from the days of the knights and the proverbial Round Table to the "women and children first" mentality found on the sinking Titanic. He writes that three masculine archetypes emerge - the warrior, the lover, and the monk - to combine in the character that Miner calls "the compleat gentleman."

Miner's warrior is a man who has something to live for - and is willing to sacrifice his life either to protect it or even to further it. The warrior is not necessarily a man of war, but a man prepared to do battle for that which he loves. His life is marked by preparation for something great and then is lived out pursuing those ideals to which he is called. One great line Miner uses to explain his warrior is from the writings of the great philosopher Epictetus who said, "For it is better to die of hunger, exempt from fear and guilt, than to live in affluence with perturbation."

If Miner's gentleman is willing to die for something he loves, it is because he loves deeply and with great passion. While romantic love definitely makes the list, it is not the sole occupant - love of God, country, and cause are also worthy objects of a gentleman's passions.

Finally, Miner's gentleman is a monk. I loved this one. Miner tells us that the word monk comes from the Greek monakhos, meaning solitary - but Miner's concept of aloneness is time for reflection and study - viewed another way, the monk is a lover "of learning and of truth."

Running throughout the book is the theme sprezzatura - a concept Miner says underlies this "compleat gentleman." It is a self-awareness and self-restraint and differs like night and day from self-centeredness or even apathy. The concept is what Christians might refer to as meekness, a trait often associated with Christ, and clearly as misunderstood. Sprezzatura is the ability to think before one speaks, to grasp the gravity of words and actions; and even to know when inaction or silence is the best avenue. It carries with it a "James Bond" like persona where actions speak louder than words, and the words flow like honey from the lips of a man with a license to kill.

Miner doesn't delude himself or the reader into thinking that this "compleat gentleman" is around every corner; quite to the contrary, "all things excellent are as difficult as they are rare" writes Miner. He gives men something to strive for, something to hold up as an ideal and an understanding that throughout history there have been men who have risen above the standards of the day to truly be called gentlemen - and we sure need more of these in this day and time!

The Compleat Gentlemen is not a Christian book, nor does the author purport it to be so; but Christian men will agree with Miner's argument that men need to be men of honor and integrity. The book is a challenging read, but well worth the effort and I would suggest it for any man, especially for a young man considering the path of his journey.

            5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2006-03-29

Up front, the only serious disagreement I have with the author is his support for putting women in combat. I understand his reasoning, but his lack of military experience causes him to oversimplify the question.

I find it entertaining that readers here were offended and surprised that a book with a picture of a sword on the cover and references to chivalry (which means, roughly, "horsemanship" -- knighthood) would speak positively of service in war. If you think that nonviolence in the face of evil is the more gentlemanly route (other than in very strict circumstances), then fine. Be the gentleman while your wife and children are killed before your eyes by a criminal. I, on the other hand, will be doing my utmost to defend them. (Defend your wife and children, that is, mine will already be safe.) Those who are disturbed by the use of violence in this "less hostile and disgusting world" should stop using freedoms that were bought for them (not by them) with spilt blood. And perhaps check out a wonderful country such as, say, Somalia, and tell me if the world is *really* less hostile.

Yes, the author should have fought in Viet Nam when he had the chance. Alas, hindsight is 20/20, and at least he now realizes his failing.

I found his discussions of the Templars, in particular, fascinating. Aside from their questionable personal hygiene, they seem to exemplify the very highest sort of warrior ideal. It is also a relief to see a group of extraordinarily brave men get the credit that is their due, rather than more hateful lies about conspiracies to conceal the "divine feminine."

If you are a woman, you will be relieved to know that there are still men out there who "get it." If you are a man, you will understand what it is that you felt was wrong with our society's cult of weak men. This book will challenge you. It did me.

3 out of 5 stars History, Not "How To".......2006-02-20

We bought this book hoping for an instruction manual on teaching our boys how to be chivalrous in an age of decay. While it is an interesting read, it is not so much a "guide" as a plotting of time. A more appropriate title would be, "The Compleat Gentleman: An Historical Discourse." Great on detail and well-written, but we were misled by the title a bit.

                Book Description

Two Golden Age classics from Japan's grand master of mystery. Edogawa Rampo (pseudonym of Hirai Taro, 1894-1965) is the acknowledged grand master of Japan's golden age of crime and mystery fiction. In the early part of his career, he created the Japanese gothic mystery, developing the work of Edgar Allan Poe and related nineteenth century writers in a distinctly Japanese form. This part of his career coincided with a great flowering in Japanese literature and culture, a relatively free and uninhibited popular press being a defining feature of the times. In this context, Rampo's dark vision and extravagant grotesquery found an avid readership, and had a profound influence on other writers. The Black Lizard, a master criminal as deadly as she is beautiful, wagers all in an epic battle with a master detective. A mystery writer vows to protect the woman he secretly loves from the Beast in the Shadows, but disaster strikes when he turns detective himself.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Rare.......2006-01-26

I first became of Edogawa Rampo a few years ago when a fascinating movie titles "The Mystery of Rampo" was distributed in the US. It used the character of Rampo (a pseudonym for Hirai Taro), a real author who is often considered the father of the Japanese detective story.

This is amazing stuff! Though he was an admirer of western authors like Edgar Allen Poe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Maurice Leblanc, Rampo is no mere imitator. He is an original writer with a wicked sense of humor and an eye for the bizarre.

"Black Lizard" is the most famous of the Akechi Kogoro novels. Akechi is a dilletante-detective character. He is often called the 'Japanese Sherlock Holmes' but Akechi is far from being a stereotyped Holmes clone. He has the requisite detective skills like deductive reason, jujutsu, mastery of disguises. He can also be quite ruthless and mercurial and brings a perverse sense of humor to his adventures.

The titular Black Lizard is a beautiful female crime boss with a perverse streak of her own. She loves to collect beautiful things, both gemstones and pretty people who she has stuffed and mounted to preserve their beauty. Her relationship with the detective is the usual matching of wits but is overshadowed by a growing sexual tension between the two.

It is a strange and fascinating read.

BEAST IN THE SHADOWS is a Poe-esque story of love and obsession. A mystery novelist is attracted to a beautiful woman only to learn that she is being stalked by her old lover, a horror novelist who has gone off the deep end. At least that the way it seems, the novel is wonderfully ambiguous. It reminds me a little of Henry James' TURN OF THE SCREW the way it makes you wonder if even the narrator is what he seems.

Rampo's quirky humor comes out in this story as well. Both the narrator and the unseen stalker seem to be alter egos of his. This gives him an opportunity to lampoon his own stories and his image as a writer.

Both stories are intense, often lurid, and unexpectedly funny. I recommend them highly!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but be prepared to put in a few hours!.......2005-04-06

This book is really good. It has explanations of the brain biases (left and right) and what they mean. Then it's divided into two sections - the first is full of tests to determine if you're left or right brained. The second is to help you strengthen the weaker side of your brain.

One downside is that to work out your brain hemisphere, you have to finish all of the puzzles - and there are quite a few. If you took the maximum allocated time for each puzzle, you could be there for over 9 hours looking for patterns and the like! Once you've finally finished these tests, you may not feel like doing more of the same in the second section of the book! But then, at least it's comprehensive and thorough. I thought it was really interesting.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic way to gauge your strengths and weaknesses.......2004-08-24

This book is fantastic way to gauge your mental strengths and weaknesses. The puzzles give you a very good idea of which brain hemisphere you utilize more often, then gives you puzzles designed to stimulate (and strengthen?) the hemisphere opposite the one you favor in everyday life.
