4.5 Stars.......2006-06-12
As usual, great, great work from Sandra Cisneros. She has such a unique voice and style and through her myriad narrators, this short story collection lays bare the realities of those who are oppressed and victimized. Many of the narrators are double minorities and the issues span from identity crises and gender bias, to patriarchal violence and class stratification. Cisneros has a way of using a conversational and seemingly simplistic (and often times childlike) voice to expose the very troubling and complex issues that occur to those who are caught between a rock and a hard place.
Cisneros is among the very best in Chicana/o literature. She is brutally honest and not afraid to deal with the ugly side of stark reality. Often times funny, and always moving, this collection is highly recommended to all.

True Writing.......2006-04-27
Wow - I don't agree at all with the reviewers who coined this "feminist" or "chicana". I mean, sure it is that, but it's so much more!
Cisneros's use of language and lyricism is at once beautiful and incredibly effective. She is one of the few writers who uses dialect to the advantage and not the detriment of her story, speaking volumes about her characters through their own voices. Her prose is rich enough for poetry, and spare enough to draw the reader into ruminations with every paragraph.
This is literature, true literature that takes the reader in surprising new directions. Inspiring.
My Friend Lucy Who Smells Like Corn.......2005-08-24
It was in 7th grade when I was first introduced to the House on Mango Street. Thanks to my teacher Ms. Henning, I have become an avid reader of Ms. Cisneros and other great writers such as Elena Poniatowska (one of Sandra's favorites), Julia Álvarez, and Gabriel García Márquez.
When I was a freshman in high school, Caramelo had been released and I read it in a matter of three days. The only book left to read of Cisneros was Woman Hollering Creek.
This year, things changed. I spent my summer at Harvard University where I took two courses. Mexican Literature and Fiction Writing. While at Harvard, one of my favorite things to do was to walk into the Harvard Book Store, go downstairs to the USED book section and search through the bookshelves. Eventually, that day I purchased the House of Spirits by Isabel Allende (because no one can believe that I haven't read it), Go Tell it to the Mountain by James Baldwin, Sula by Toni Morrison, and last but not least, Woman Hollering Creek by Sandra Cisneros.
Since the East Coast consists of very small states, I visited a couple of schools including Boston U., Tufts, Brown, Amherst, Dartmouth, NYU, and Columbia. My trip to Columbia had to be the most fun of all. Me, and two friends, one from L.A. and the other from Chicago all took books for the bus trip. I remember my friend from L.A. was reading Beloved by Toni Morrison, the other was reading a book that was assigned by her Psychology professor (BORING), and I was reading Woman Hollering Creek. By the time we got to New York City I was finished with the book. I liked it so much that when I went back to Harvard I requested my favorite story "Mericans" to be read in class and afterwards we had a discussion.
Because of Sandra, I am now a writer and I admire her for getting so far. If you have read The House on Mango Street, you have an idea of the type of neighborhood Sandra lived in. Well that's the exact same neighborhood in which I have been living all my life. Most of the adolescents living in this neighborhood are seen as students who are incapable of having a good future, but Sandra has proved that wrong. Now, she is internationally well known and has been my motivation throughout the past years.
Earlier this year, I had to opportunity to meet her in person, and said that she was working on a book right now. I have no other option than to wait.
Diversity.......2005-07-02
I attended a literature class during the spring semester of 2005. Two short stories from this book were included in my class. Sandra Cisneros writes from the heart. She addresses the issue of domestic violence in the short story, "Woman Hollering Creek." The short story, "Eleven," is about a young girl on her 11th birthday, and how this young girl remembers what it was like to experience behaviors from most of those 11 years.
We live in a country that contains a richness of cultural diversity, and has been built on that concept. I'm seriously concerned about the comments of the previous reviewer,"alphazion." I'm also concerned about the user name as it appears to be racist in nature. The quote selected by this individual, could imply that Ms. Cisneros approves of terrorism!
I throughly enjoy the literature of Ms. Cisneros. She also is the reader for her audiobooks, and to experience being read to by her is something that will remain with the listener for a very long time. I applaud her contributions to the literary field. In addition to her wonderful writing, she is also an excellent teacher and lecturer.
Mostly Good Moments, and A Few Great Ones.......2005-05-17
I'll echo other Amazon reviewers in saying that Cisneros has a truly unique voice. Even when her ultimate point is to say things that we've heard over and over again (and often need to hear even more), she conveys her message by saying old things in unique, truly striking ways. Cisneros actually finds images that have never been used before ("houses the color of bad weather"), and even in in the weaker stories, there is always this pure voice that is a constant joy to encounter.
The stories themselves vary widely in style. There are the short, impressionistic, plotless, poetic ones (that are sometimes my favorites) like "Eleven," "Salvador Late or Early," and "Tin Tan Tan." Then, there are the longer ones that draw so strongly on the author's heritage. The title story and in "Little Miracles, Kept Promises" are particularly strong.
Overall, this is well worth a read. As the other reviewers suggest, it may be of most interest to those drawn to feminist writing and to Chicana writings, but those readers are, by no means, the only ones who can enjoy this. The stories of Woman Hollering Creek should also be of interest to those who simply love good writing.

Customer Reviews:
Another great book by Sandra Cisneros!.......2000-06-11
I highly recommend this book because it is another marvelous work by Sandra Cisneros. Like her other book, The House on Mango Street, it offers sad tales from the hearts of young girls and is an excellent insight on the unique prose style of Cisneros. Besides being enjoyable, the Spanish version may be helpful to those studying Spanish by working on translating, otherwise, this book is still a great classic that any fan of Sandra Cisneros should enjoy!
Cisneros.......2000-03-30
I love this book. Cisneros writes in such a beautiful and poetic style that I am immediately wherever she takes me. Often when reading this, I had to stop to write down certain lines that appealed to me, such as, "...I believe that love is always eternal. Even if eternity is only five minutes." Wonderful stories.

Book Description
"THE PACE NEVER FLAGS, bolstered by the shrewd Mrs. P. and a host of well-defined characters who all work their surprising wiles."
--Publishers Weekly
In response to a desperate SOS, Kadi Hopkirk flies to the African country of Ubangiba, where her childhood friend, Sammat, is soon to be crowned king. Mrs. Pollifax, reluctant to allow the girl to venture alone into what she fears may be grave danger, crashes the party.
On arrival, Kadi and Mrs. P. soon discover that Sammat has dangerous enemies. Rumors are springing up that he is a sorcerer who is responsible for a rash of shocking murders in which the victims appear to have been clawed to death by a lion. These crimes are especially terrifying because there are no lions in Ubangiba. So Mrs. Pollifax wades into the fray, hunting for the source of the bloody terrorism that threatens Sammat and Ubangiba--not to mention Kadi and Mrs. Pollifax. . . .

Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2006-03-08
I never got fully engrossed in this book. The characters were hard to understand, and the whole reason why Mrs Pollifax felt compelled to go to Africa didn't quite make sense. I expected more intrigue associated with the economic development of the mythical African country, but it never happened. And to top things off, when the killer was finally unmasked (literally!) I found it kind of hard to believe it was this character. The whole kidnapping part of the story was weak too. Sorry - just didn't work for me.
a way to pass the time.......2005-09-19
I hadn't read the previous book, Mrs. Pollifax Pursued, where she apparently meets Kadi and Sammy, her main cohorts in this story. Kadi finds out that Sammy is having difficulties and so she and Mrs. Pollifax hop on the first available flight to Ubandiba, where Sammy is the current ruler. The people are terrified by the rumors and murders of the Lion Killer, all of which point to Sammy. Kadi, daughter of murdered Ubandiba missionaries, becomes a target of the Lion Killer and Mrs. Pollifax must use her resources and ingenuity to save them all. I listened to this book, and it was a pleasant diversion on a long drive.
Sequel to "Mrs. Pollifax Pursued".......2003-05-02
In Dorothy Gilman's previous book, "Mrs. Pollifax Pursued", she introduces us to Kadi, the daughter of Ubandiba missionaries, and her college friend Sammy, who is now trying to rule the country after many years of dictatorship. Sammy calls upon Kadi for help and Mrs. Pollifax decides to accompany her. There have been a series of violent deaths at the hands of a "lion killer", one who dons a lion costume, and Sammy's enemies have accused him of being behind the murders. When Kadi arrives in Ubandiba, she becomes the target of an old enemy, and Mrs. Pollifax does her best to protect the young girl. A potential archaeological dig and the hint of romance for Kadi combine with political intrigue and murder to create another satisfying story of Mrs. Pollifax.
Ubangiba may elicit yawns.......2001-07-18
While the story is interesting and Gilman does a good job of describing an African nation in the shaky position between "President for Life" and new king, the amount of attention paid to daily life in Ubangiba was a little boring for me. Toward the end of the book the story picked up a little and I was more interested, but "Lion Killer" is definitely not Gilman's best work. Still Mrs. Pollifax is a charmer and a Pollifax book that rates four stars is still head-and-shoulders above many five star mysteries by other authors!
More adventure for Mrs. P........2000-10-02
Gilman's charming spy is back, this time in a book that is more of a sequel than another series entry. Even if you don't normally read series books in order like I do, I strongly suggest you meet Kadi and friends in MRS POLLIFAX PURSUED before reading this one. Now our beloved Emily Pollifax is traveling to Kadi's home turf, Ubangiba, to untangle a web of political intrigue with her usual clever style.
There was a noticeable lack of CIA presence in this book that made me wonder if Emily had made a copmlete break from the agency, but then I noticed INNOCENT TOURIST and UNVEILED both come after this one and seem to involve the CIA again. I found the clues a little easier to spot in this book than in earlier stories, but it was great fun putting them together for a satisfying conclusion. All in all, another great Mrs. Pollifax adventure.

Book Description
One of the greatest storytellers of our time, Roger Zelazny was a writer who created entire civilizations from whole cloth as masterfully as he explored mankind's place in the cosmos. From the depths of space to the depths of the human heart, from our darkest nightmares to our most fanciful dreams, Zelazny wove colorful tapestries that presented the wonders of the universe to us all.
The Last Defender of Camelot is a new collection of breathtaking stories that showcase these abilities, edited and with an introduction by award-winning author Robert Silverberg. Included are such tales as: "For a Breath I Tarry," "Halfjack," and the Hugo Award-winning "24 Views of Mt. Fuji, by Hokusai," "Permafrost," and "Home is the Hangman."
Customer Reviews:
The Last Defender of Camelot.......2005-09-06
"The Last Defender" is an excellent collection of some of the master's best stories, including "24 Views of Mount Fuji," and one previously uncollected story. Zelazny did more than just write science fiction; he captured the essence of human emotion, even when writiing about computerized intelligences in the distant future (see, for example, "For A Breath I Tarry." )
A good new selection with an old title.......2003-11-18
This new collection of Zelazny stories, selected by Robert Silverberg, is a good one. It contains 3 of his stronger stories from earlier collections made by Zelazny himself: "For A Breath I Tarry," "The Last Defender of Camelot," and "24 Views of Mt. Fuji."
The book also contains several other worthy stories to create a collection that spans Zelazny's career. I suspect length issues caused the selection to be limited to only 11 stories. Still, as a long-time reader of Zelazny's work since the '60s, I think he would have been better represented if I Books could have made the collection bigger. New readers of Zelazny can't easily get a feeling for the magnitude of his accomplishments with such a small selection.
The absence of "He Who Shapes" and "Damnation Alley," for instance, is to be regretted. Still, the collection is good overall. New readers who wish to read more of Zelazny's work will simply need to scour 2nd hand bookstores.
Another, somewhat irksome problem is that the collection name, _The Last Defender of Camelot_, matches that of a collection that Zelazny published himself back in 1980. That collection was probably one of his 2 or 3 best, and it was also quite large. Giving this collection the same name seems an ill-considered choice, and it will result in some confusion that should have been avoided. Most regrettable, but oh, well. At least these stories are available again, and that is a plus.
Good stuff.... with 1 total classic!.......2002-08-20
This is worth it all 4 "For a Breath I Tarry," which is 1 of my all-time faves -- words fail me; it's hilarious, heart-wrenching; it'll change your world in 25 pages. "He Who Shapes" (aka "The Dream Master") is also outstanding. Also solid: "The Last Defender of Camelot," & a romantic heart-wringer called "The Engine at Heartspring's Center." There R many others which R at LEAST worth reading. Zelazny was a poet; I miss him. If U like him, U might also try early George R.R. Martin, early Samuel R. Delany, & some of Robert Silverberg's mellower work (like DOWNWARD TO THE EARTH, DYING INSIDE, THE BOOK OF SKULLS).
A hacked version of the classic anthology.......2002-06-25
As a huge fan of the author and the original release of this brilliant short story collection, I am extremely disappointed in the new release. HUNT DOWN THE ORIGINAL. The new version omits all of Zelazny's forewords and, more damning, it actually omits some of the better stories found in the original collection. Silverburg mentions "Horsemen!" in the introduction, then the story is strangely absent. This is a travesty.
An exquisite classic.......2002-03-29
I discovered Roger Zelazny's writings long ago when I was young and impressionable, for which I am eternally grateful. This collection of his short stories is my personal favorite because the stories contained within are each unique and distinct, no two alike. Think of a banquet with many courses, each one delicious and completely different and you will know what I mean.
From "Passion Play" to the "Stainless Steel Leech", through "Comes Now the Power" and "Damnation Alley", Zelazny demonstrates his uncanny insight into the soul of man, machine, and beast. And in the title piece, "Last Defender of Camelot", he takes the over-told Arthurian legend and twists it into something fresh and original. Yum!
But my favorite story is "For a Breath I Tarry", a post-apocalyptic vision of hope and humanity springing from a most unlikely and accidental hero.
If science fiction, GOOD science fiction, is something you value, this book will please you for many years because just when you think you know everything these stories have to offer, some other facet or nuance will creep up behind you and remind you how strange and wonderful the universe really is.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent tool for maintaining weight loss! .......2007-08-31
I bought this because I'm finally getting close to my weight loss goal. Yes, I used Protein Power Life Plan for my weight loss and this book is geared towards low carbers, although I think almost anyone can use it.
It's a pretty simple book. There is an explanation of how you transition from a loosing phase to a maintaining phase, there are examples (taken from their practice) of how others have transitioned and there are meal plans and recipes. Most importantly tho, is that there is a section that allows 365 days of recording your meals, activities, etc.
Well written, easy to understand and great tool. A must for anyone trying to maintain a low carb lifestyle!!
