Book Description

Be careful what you wish for...

Once upon a time there was a fairy godmother named Desiderata who had a good heart, a wise head, and poor planning skills—which unforunately left the Princess Emberella in the care of her other (not quite so good and wise) godmother when DEATH came for Desiderata. So now it's up to Magrat Garlick, Granny Weatherwax, and Nanny Ogg to hop on broomsticks and make for far-distant Genua to ensure the servant girl doesn't marry the Prince.

But the road to Genua is bumpy, and along the way the trio of witches encounters the occasional vampire, werewolf, and falling house (well this is a fairy tale, after all). The trouble really begins once these reluctant foster-godmothers arrive in Genua and must outwit their power-hungry counterpart who'll stop at nothing to achieve a proper "happy ending"—even if it means destroying a kingdom.

5 out of 5 stars Sure to please any fan of humor and witchcraft!.......2007-09-27

This is the twelfth book in Terry Pratchett's series on the Discworld - a flat world, supported on the backs of four massive elephants riding on the back of a planet-sized turtle. Anything hilarious can happen here, and eventually does.

When Magrat Garlick inherits a magic wand, and the job of fairy godmother, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg quickly make the (very short) leap to the conclusion that she cannot possibly handle the job. There's something sinister out there - someone is using mirror magic, and can manipulate the power of stories. So, now it is up to the witches of Lancre to go abroad and set things right...if they can!

I have been a huge fan of Terry Pratchett for years, and this book is one of the best of them. I love the Witch stories, and look forward to any story that contains Granny Weatherwax. What I liked most about this one are the fascinating places that the action takes place in, especially Genua - where Disneyland meets New Orleans.

So, let me just say that this is a great book, one that is sure to please any fan of humor and witchcraft. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous... as always..........2007-08-16

This was a fantastic book. I love the witches (and DEATH of course)... laugh out loud funny... the whole "forn" approach is just hysterical (especially if you mutilate language yourself...)

5 out of 5 stars The Offensive Use of Story.......2007-04-08

Fairy godmother Desiderata has died without really training a successor. In a last moment note, she bequeaths her fairy godmothering-wand to Magrat Garlick, and arranges matters so that Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax will help Magrat out. As a result, the entire coven is off to Genua. The witches are indeed abroad.

Fairy godmothers always come in pairs, and the other fairy godmother is Lilith, Granny Weatherwax's sister, who ran off some years ago after some Trouble, leaving Granny to be the Good Witch. Lilith has used the power of story - and extravagant use of mirror magic - to transform Genua into a kind of vicious fairy tale city. Magrat, Nanny and Granny must stop Emberella from kissing the Duc, or everyone will live Happily Ever After. Whether they want to or not.

Pratchett detests people who use people for their own ends. And Lilith uses the power of story to make people do what she wants, whether they like it or not. Emberella is destined to kiss the Duc whether she wants to or not, even though the Duc is creepy, has cold hands, an impossibly long tongue and eats flies. So while there may not be Black Magic and White Magic on the Discworld, there is Good and Evil, and Lilith, trying to control the lives of others, is Evil.

Like all Pratchett novels, this one will reduce you to helpless laughter. There are sly references to other fantasies (including an appearance by Gollum), multi-lingual puns (Nanny Ogg speaking Foreign), and an extended cameo by Greebo, Nanny's over-sexed tom cat. But as entertaining as "Witches Abroad" may be, like all later Pratchett books, there are thoughtful questions behind all that laughter. "Good," Pratchett demonstrates, is not the same as "Sweet," or even "Nice." No one writing today combines hysterically funny writing with thoughtful social commentary as well as Terry Pratchett. In Esmerelda Weatherwax he has created one of the great characters in fantasy. Very highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars How To Fight A Happy Ending.......2007-01-04

Terry Pratchett's first novel, "The Carpet People", appeared in 1971. "Witches Abroad" is the twelfth novel in his hugely popular Discworld series and was first published in 1991. It's also the third book (after "Equal Rites" and "Wyrd Sisters") to feature Granny Weatherwax, the Discworld's greatest witch.

As with "Wyrd Sisters", Granny Weatherwax is joined by the Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick. Nanny Ogg, is the raucous head of the Ogg clan based in Lancre town. (She also owns a fearsome, one-eyed tomcat with an unbridled libido called Greebo). The other is Magrat Garlick, who has a few fanciful ideas about magic that Granny doesn't altogether approve of. She's always been fond of dancing, occult jewellery and runes, but now Granny thinks Magrat's gone funny in the head : there's the self-defence classes (despite being a witch), the attempts to 'find herself' and her refusal to marry Lancre's new King. (Despite never having been one, she refuses to be a 'sex object').

One of the trio's neighbours is Desiderata Hollow, a witch who specialises in fairy-godmothering. Despite the fact that witches know exactly when they're going to die, Desiderata never quite managed to train up a replacement. Instead, she has her magic wand delivered to Magrat, with a couple of very strict instructions : she's to travel to Genua to STOP a god-daughter marrying a prince, and she's to keep Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg from going with her. (In fact, Desiderata is banking on the two older witches tagging along : she knows she can only guarantee their attendance by forbidding them from travelling).

This isn't going to be an easy mission. Godmothers travel in twos, and Desiderata's counterpart - Lilith - wished for Embers (the god-daughter) to have beauty and power and to marry a prince. Whether or not the young lady actually wanted any of that was irrelevant, and Desiderata has been trying to do what's best for Embers. Unfortuantely, it's going to be very difficult to stop a good story...

Much of the humour comes from poking fun at fairy tales, though there's a touch of the Wizard of Oz, and a quick cameo from Gollum. There's also the renowned dwarf lover, Casanunda, the attempts to master 'speaking foreign' and the terrible privies in foreign parts. However, it's Nanny Ogg - with her fondness for a double entendre and a vulgar song - who provides many of the best parts. Thoroughly recommended !

5 out of 5 stars Discworld.......2006-08-27

I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.

A reviewer has compared him to Geoffrey Chaucer. He reminds me more of Douglas Adams, or perhaps S Morgenstern. Great company, isn't it? He's an extremely skillful and imaginative writer, damn funny, clever and observant to boot. He's also very easy to read. A master of characterization, and if there's anything else you like about reading that I didn't mention here, assume I simply forgot. He's awesome.

Another reviewer mentioned Jonathan Swift and PG Wodehouse. Why such hallowed company? Because Pratchett belongs there! Truly, I'm enjoying my quest to read every book in the series. You should do the same, and begin your quest at the library because he's got to be there. He's awesome!

Yet another reviewer said Jerome K Jerome meets Lord of the Rings. Yeah, that works too.

Why do we, as reviewers, compare authors to other authors? Because it's easier than thinking. In the case of Terry Pratchett, it's probably because we'd otherwise wind up quoting the guy. He's so unique that we just don't know how else to cope with his greatness. Even this paragraph sounds like foamy drool raving, doesn't it? That's how all readers react to Pratchett. Reviewers simply don't have the good sense to keep it to themselves.

I could call his writing fantasy, but I could likewise call what Douglas Adams wrote science fiction. In both cases, I wouldn't be wrong, but I'd be neglecting so much and just totally missing the point. A rare few authors transcend a genre to such a degree that you know they're shouting out, loud and proud, a big fat "Bite me!"

I love Terry Pratchett's writing, and I completely understand why some folks refer to him as their favorite author. Or favourite, I should say, since we're being British. He's one of those authors that makes you want to grab whoever's in hearing range and start reading passages aloud. I'm simply thrilled that there's such an extremely talented and prolific author who's been working for years without me being aware of him. Now I have much catching up to do, and I will love it.

                    Book Description

One of America's most beloved mystery writers, Carolyn G. Hart, the Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Award-winning author, returns to her original mystery
series that features Annie Darling, owner of the Death on Demand Bookstore, and her husband, Max, with Mint Julep Murder.

Normally, Annie Laurence Darling would be eagerly awaiting her trip to Head Island, where this year's Dixie Book Festival is being held. But this year Annie has agreed to be the author liaison to five authors honored with the much-coveted Dixie Book Festival Medallions, and she fears she is going to have her hands full juggling murderous egos. What Annie doesn't count on is the untimely death of ambitious Mint Julep Press publisher Kenneth Hazlitt. Hazlitt arrives at the Festival peddling a proposal for Song of the South, a trashy roman  clef that details the indiscretions of some famous Southern authors at a writers' conference--writers who more than resemble the Dixie Festival Medallion winners. When Hazlitt drops dead after drinking a hit of bourbon from his private stock, the evidence points to Annie--the fatal glass is imprinted with her fingerprints. As more and more evidence points her way, Annie and Max must act fast to catch a wily killer...before the police throw the book at Annie!

                    4 out of 5 stars What a fun romp!.......2007-05-03

These books by Carolyn Hart are lots of fun. They make for nice light mystery reading. This book is set on Hilton Head Island, and Ms. Hart shows her love for this island in the writing of this book. There's lots of sleaze and glamour when Annie and her husband Max attend a Southern Book Fair on this island. If I have a complaint about these books, it is that each one always puts Annie or her nearest and dearest as prime suspects in the murder. Why can't they just try to solve a murder because it happens in their vicinity, not because one of them is suspected of killing someone? But the books are still fun, and I always enjoy the references to mystery writers and mystery books made throughout each book.

1 out of 5 stars Quagmire of horse feathers.......2006-09-04

Many times I said it: female authors suck. So does Carolyn Hart with her "Death on Command" baloney. I first found out that my gender cannot write, when I followed Oprah's Book Club. All female authors are beneath mediocricity. What a bunch of literary losers! Then she picked a book "House of Sand and Fog" by a male author. I loved it and promptly was made into a movie. Carolyn Hart I thought had talent when I read one of her short stories. Mint Julep is a disaster. I made two attempts to read it, landet on page 50 and still find myself in a quagmire of boredom. No logic, no story line, just horse feathers.

4 out of 5 stars Annie goes to the Dixie Book Festival.......2002-06-30

Annie Darling, proprietor of the bookstore Death on Demand, goes to the Dixie Book Festival, where many southern authors are being featured. She agrees to be an author liason for the five authors who are to receive special awards at the Festival. Publisher Kenneth Hazlitt, a book publisher, arrives and announces that he is writing a "tell-all" expose of the five authors who are being honored. When Hazlitt is poisoned, Annie reasons that it must be one of the five authors, but the local police chief uses circumstantial evidence to accuse Annie! She investigates each of the authors and finds that they all have something to hide. She also announces that she will now take over the book that Hazlitt had threatened to write, in order to flush out the murderer, much to her husband Max's dismay. This is another book in the charming Death on Demand series featuring Hart's delightful couple, Max and Annie Darling. Cozy readers will enjoy this book, as well as the others in the series.

                    4 out of 5 stars A very fun read!.......1999-08-19

This is a very enjoyable book, as are all the the Death on Demand titles. As in A Little Class on Murder, Henny, Miss Dora and Laurel join forces (they've all written books and are looking for publishers!) to "help" Annie and Max solve the mystery and to try to drive Annie batty in the process. You'll enjoy it.

I'd say there are 4 to 6 great ideas in here that I took and added to a home made adventure. The rest was pretty much an excuse for hack and slash. Good maps and great details about the legendary names from Greyhawk.

Would recommend but not highly recommend.

Here's a rare adventure featuring one of Gygax's most notorious Arch-Mages, Mordenkainen himself... your veteran heroes (levels 8-14) will delve deep into the ruins of Maure Castle itself, seeking the legendary Unopenable Doors! This is one of Gary's favorite "hack-and-slash" adventures, and now you can play the roles of Mordenkainen and Bigby yourselves, and see where all the action is! One of the best "old school" Greyhawk adventures in existence.

This is the best fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings. While this series is not as widely know as Narnia or LOTR it deserves a lot of credit and imo is better then Narnia.

This is very easy to read and easy to understand. Narnia jumps around to much. This series is about one set of characters and their adventures in Wales like Prydain.

This is an abosolute gem of a series and encourage anybody who likes the fantasy genre to read these stories you will be glad you did.

If this is majikal, then I must be a djinn. This is a sort of softcore porno, disguised as a D&D type adventure book.
Our 'heroine', a sorceress of some sort, trolls the woods, looking to be molested by guys, so she can get 'essence' from the sex. Inevitably, she wanders into a castle containing a vampyress. Wacky lesbian antics ensue (replete with breast biting) somehow, she escapes in time to help a load of soldiers go to war. How, by bedding the entire army! way to go!

The Castle In The Attic by Elizabeth Winthrop

I like the book The Castle In The Attic because its about magic and its fiction. I think you will like this book because its about a boy who gets a castle. And the boy gets a small knight, and the knight is alive and makes the boy small with a magical token. The knight has to reclaim his castle and defeat a wizard called Alastor. The magic parts are cooler than I thought. Its the 3rd best book I've ever read.

I like the dragon, the knight, and the magic....But I do not like the wizard. You should read this book because it is really, really that good. I like the beginning don't like the middle but I like the end.

i read the castle in the attic and i thoght it wasn't very entrtaning. but that's just my opinion. i thought on some of the chapters it dragged on and lost me alot. like it would talk about one thing and then another without alot of detail. for my opinion, it was an ok book. it had it's moments like whats going to happen next then it was really boring.

1 out of 5 stars Too restrictive for less than the extremist!!.......2005-03-31

I have read many books on nutrition, and have been through some restrictive programs in my day, but this book is WAY beyond restrictive. I became dizzy with all the information and the do's and the don'ts, and the how's and the why's. This book is supposed to be a "daily regimen for healthy living", yet it outlines a time-consuming schedule of not only how and what to eat, but he also tells the reader that they need to "brush" their skin daily, what kind of clothes to wear, how and when to take a shower, and drink "Veal Joint Broth" -- it's almost maddening to read the book and even more maddening to think of my life lived in such intensity and restriction! When I got to the "suggested" menus, I finally knew that this "regimen" was not for me. Except for fresh fruits and vegetables, almost all menu items can only be found in a high-end health food store, so if you shop at a regular food chain store like me, or depend on a realistic food budget (don't we all?) -- then this book isn't for you either! If you drink "Dandelion Coffee", eat "Baked Carrot Loaf" or "Muesli with Goat's Milk", then this book is for you. Dr. Jensen gives the same sound advice as others do (e.g. eat fresh fruits and veggies, exercise, drink plenty of water and get good rest, etc.), but it is his sound advice taken to the extreme. How can we balance work, kids, home, church, friends, social life -- and then have the time, or energy, to live by his extremely structured regimen? This may have helped many, or only just a few, but I sure wish I had seen this kind of review before I bought this book.

                                                5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2004-07-05

I have read most of Bernard Jensen's books and reviewed dozens of other health books over several years. This book as most of the other Jensen books all have some things that the others do not. It may be in the elaboration of the information, the subject itself or the manner of explaining some aspect of nutrition or the body, but all the information serves to reinforce. I am well pleased with this book in particular as it addressed 'slant board' use, missing nutrients in the foods commonly eaten, when to eat what types of whole foods. The four and a half pages on the lymph drainage system is worth the price of the book all by itself.

Dr. Jensen lived to be an old guy with excellent health who unlike many of todays health 'professional's' practiced what he preached and had a large crowd of healed folks thanks to his knowledge and wisdom acquired over decades of practice at his 'health ranch'. As the owner of Dr. Jensens books I re read them often as I continue to find additional morsels I had forgotten or overlooked before. What a delight having a Jensen library.

                                                Enjoy your new read !
