    Book Description

Lower the bar. Turn it down a notch. Get off the Stairmaster. The Underachiever's Manifesto is the playfully persuasive pocket guide to living life to the least and loving it. With sharp humor and genuine wisdom, this welcome little book extols the fabulous benefits of underachievement in our overextended society. A witty introduction makes the case for the right amount of effort a lot less than we've been led to believe. Ten principles of underachievement establish the basics (#8: The tallest blade of grass is the surest to be cut); and practical applications show how mediocrity is the key to happiness at work, in relationships, dieting, exercise, investment, and more. Devilishly enlisting examples from philosophy, economics, science, and good common sense, The Underachiever's Manifesto is a lighthearted, life-changing rallying call for those who dare to do less and enjoy more.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I Ever Read About Art.......2005-08-17

I read this in graduate school, and more than anything else that I have read, it helped me to understand what art is and how it works. I don't just mean visual art either - all the arts. This really should be required reading for any educated reader with the passion for the arts. I would gladly buy it again - but not at the ridiculous price this publisher wants for it.

5 out of 5 stars Langer is 1 of the best art philosophers of the 20th Century.......1999-05-11

I have read two chapters by her in a undergrad class that surveys aesthetic philosophy, I am buying this book to dig in deeper to what she has to say. If you are interested in a book which defines every word effectively, and is written in Modern American English, this is your author.

I have only read chapter 1 and I would like more imput on the chapters pertaining to visual art.

    Book Description

Complex Pleasure deals with questions of literary feeling in eight major German writers—Lessing, Kant, Hölderlin, Nietzsche, Musil, Kafka, Trakl, and Benjamin. On the basis of close readings of these authors Stanley Corngold makes vivid the following ideas: that where there is literature there is complex pleasure; that this pleasure is complex because it involves the impression of a disclosure; that this thought is foremost in the minds of a number of canonical writers; that important literary works in the German tradition—fiction, poetry, critique—can be illuminated through their treatment of literary feeling; and, finally, that the conceptual terms for these forms of feeling continually vary.

The types of feeling treated in Complex Pleasure include wit (the startling perception of likeness) and the disinterested pleasure of aesthetic judgment; Hölderlin’s “swift conceptual grasp,” in which “the tempo of the process of thought is stressed”; “artistic imagination,” mood, sadistic enjoyment, rapturous distraction, homonymic dissonance, and courage as a mode of literary experience. At the same time, through the deftness, range, and surprise of its execution, the book itself conveys complex pleasure. The reader will also find fascinating, hitherto untranslated material by Nietzsche (“On Moods”) and Kafka (important sections from his journals and from his unfinished novel The Boy Who Sank Out of Sight).

5 out of 5 stars How to read literature and literary scholarship.......2005-01-20

Stanley Corngold is the most perspicacious reader of Franz Kafka living in America today (see for example his recent LAMBENT TRACES and earlier THE NECESSITY OF FORM). In this book, he offers a series of equally fine readings in German philosophy and literature, including an essay on Kafka's novel "The Man who Disappeared (AMERIKA)." I highly recommend Corngold's work to those who see literature as more than "content" (was the previous reviewer looking for plot summaries?). This is a beautifully crafted book that takes seriously the exigency of writing.

    1 out of 5 stars With pleasure........2001-08-23

It is always amusing to come across a work that favors form over content. But perhaps scholarly books are not really designed to be read for this kind of entertainment - I have the feeling that someone is missing the point here.

If Emily Dickinson wasn't the mother of American poetry, she was at least the favorite eccentric aunt. The long-standing poetic rebellion against formalism, especially as it has helped feminist writers to find a free and authentic voice, has had the unfortunate byproduct of separating many women writers from the Dickinsonian tradition of carefully crafted verse. The discipline of poetic form can lead to a freshness of vision, and many women writers are either rediscovering, or have never forgotten, the benefits of scansion, meter, and fixed-form poetry. In this collection you'll find stunning formal poetry, which Rita Dove calls "a talisman against disintegration." Annie Finch has included work from Jane Kenyon, May Sarton, and Molly Peacock, among others.

5 out of 5 stars a useful book for poets interested in formal poetry.......1999-06-08

This anthology is very useful to anyone who wants to read contemporary poetry in traditional forms. I like the range of poets displayed ( from Rhina Esphillat to Nikki Giovanni to Honor Moore) and the way poets bend and extend the traditional forms we usually think of as confining. The authors also give a brief commentary on their work, which helps give the reader insight into how and why poets choose certain forms.

Mount Rainier, North America's biggest volcano, looms over Seattle like an invitation to... adventure? Disaster? Discovery? It's all of the above for Bruce Barcott, a Seattle writer who captures the mountain from multiple angles in this luminous biography that defines Rainier's landscape to be like none other on the continent. By turns witty and introspective, Barcott's trip to the top of the glacier-clad peak is filled with history, scientific observation, and a divided personal attachment that struggles to make sense of the mountain and its effect on the surrounding land and people. The Measure of a Mountain is a literate, entertaining view of a totemic Northwest landmark.

                Book Description

What happens when the most potent icon of the Pacific Northwest--Mount Rainier--is explored, explained, and observed by one of the region's most promising literary talents? A mythic mountainis uncovered that is both beautiful and terrifying.

The one star is for having the nerve to call Michael Crichton's State of Fear "a horrible anti-science potboiler, which was easily the worst book I read all year".

2 out of 5 stars No desire to vist Ranier after this.......2004-12-31

After slogging through this overwritten and overwrought account of the author's obsession with Mr. Rainier, I lost what little interest I had in ever visiting the place. The mountain is painted as dreary and gray, with grimy little spots of human encroachment. The only moderately interesting part of the book are the chapters on the Himalayas and high altitude climbing, which, if Barcott stayed on point, would not even be in the book. No wonder his girlfriend got fed up with him; he is not just a bore, he is a bore with an ill-defined and pointless obsession.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book Ever.......2003-07-24

I think if I were stranded on a deserted island, I would want a copy of this book as well as all those Dostoevsky's I've always promised myself I would read one day. Being an avid climber, this is probably my favorite book of all times, and the book I am always sure to purchase as a gift for others to enjoy. This is NOT a climbing guide or a book just for the climbing community (although we love it). This is a book for anyone who loves the Pacific Northwest, mountains, mountain weather, great stories of adventure and tragedy, geology, hight altitude bugs, plants, animals, and good humor. Each chapter unfolds an entire diverse topic. You'll find yourself going back and reading your favorite chapters.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Be Looking for People to Read This Book To!.......2002-12-12

I bought this book a couple of years ago and have reread it twice already. The first time I read it I found myself hunting down my husband over and over saying "you've got to listen to this"... Parts of the book are laugh-out-loud funny. But in addition to the humor, the book is a well-written and imformative glimpse into all facets of Mt. Rainier. I've been in love with this mountain since I was a child, and I highly recommend this interesting book by a talented author.

4 out of 5 stars Trying to Measure up to Ranier.......2002-07-29

If you are interested in the outdoors, American history, geology, glaciology, entomology or ecology, then this book is worth your time. Barcott has assembled a witty, introspective book on all things Rainier.

I had never heard of Barcott until a friend sent me this book in preparation for a trip to Rainier. By the time I finished the book, I was equally more drawn to and fearful of the mountain than before. And Barcott is in good company. Jon Krakauer, who had the same effect on Everest in the minds of many several years ago with Into Thin Air, has some impressive things to say about Barcott's work on the back cover.

At one point, while discussing the natural sciences as Rainier relates to them, Barcott mentions that "science isn't truth, it's merely our best stab at it." In describing this book, I'd characterize it not as an authoritative work on Rainier, but Barcott's personal best stab at it. This is a fun, non-scholarly book that offers insight into virtually every aspect of Rainier, including the history of how it got its name, the bugs that inhabit the mountain, the annual dance of glacial shift, the wild flowers that keep the mountains delicate ecology in balance and the people who are drawn to the mountain, each for their own reasons.

Rainier is an intriguing mountain, and Measure of a Mountain is equally intriguing. Barcott's no nonsense, balanced style makes you feel like you are talking to a friend about their own obsession with Rainier, and his descriptions of hikes around the perimeter of the mountain make you feel like you are suffering the bug bites and soaking in the sublime surroundings right there with him. Most of all, Measure of a Mountain is a vivid portrait of one man's attempt to find balance and to understand himself in light of his surroundings and Barcott's style set against the backdrop of Rainier delivers an account free of the indulgence and self-obsession that so typically taints writers.

This is a good book, and worth a few hours of your time.

                Book Description

"A superb piece of urban and planning history."--American Historical Review "Sets a new standard for effectively placing planning issues in their larger social and political context."--Planning Perspectives "Howard Gillette is our leading expert on the politics of planning for Washington, DC. . . . Between Justice and Beauty is the best introduction to the political choices that have shaped our national city."--American Planning Association Journal "Between Justice and Beauty is written for readers who do not necessarily have a deep interest in Washington, although the wealth of detailed historical information contained in its pages will provide plenty for a student of the city to digest. The historical narrative provides insight into the development of the city and could be used as a case study text in a graduate seminar in urban planning or geography."--Urban Geography "Gillette's clear focus on government gives thematic coherence to his insightful and engaging history, highlighting matters of physical development such as slum clearance, public housing construction, urban renewal, commercial development, transportation, and the planning of the monumental core."--Journal of Urban History As the only American city under direct congressional control, Washington has served historically as a testing ground for federal policy initiatives and social experiments--with decidedly mixed results. Well-intentioned efforts to introduce measures of social justice for the district's largely black population have failed. Yet federal plans and federal money have successfully created a large federal presence--a triumph, argues Howard Gillette, of beauty over justice. In a new afterword, Gillette addresses the recent revitalization and the aftereffects of an urban sports arena. Howard Gillette, Jr. is Professor of History at Rutgers University and the author of Camden After the Fall: Decline and Renewal in a Post-Industrial City, also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Between Justice & Beauty: Race, Planning, And The Failure Of Urban Policy In Washington, D.C. by Howard Gillette Jr. (Professor Of History Rutgers University) examines how, as the only American city directly under congressional control, Washington D.C. has historically been used to test federal policy initiatives and social experiments. Some results have been positive; many have not, and the best of intentions striving to bring social justice to the largely black populace have failed. A large federal presence has been created, but to what ends? Gillette claims that this bloated and all-too-often ineffective federal presence is a triumph of beauty of justice, and searches for a more effective means to bring help to the city dwellers who need revitalization the most. A scholarly, well-researched treatise, sparsely illustrated with black-and-white photographs, Between Justice & Beauty attacks longstanding social problems head-on in search of solutions.

                  Book Description

This is the first book-length account of the world Anne Gould Hauberg both discovered and helped bring into being. A major figure in Seattle's cultural life, she has been an instigator of ideas for innumerable people and organizations, sometimes when no one else could see the way, and has provided critical support that helped launch many artists' careers. Author Barbara Johns brings her own intimate knowledge of Seattle's art and architectural heritage to the story of Anne Hauberg's life and accomplishments. Johns has an acute ear for an anecdote and a sensibility for context as Hauberg wove her passion for beauty into the cultural fabric of a great city.

Anne's story begins in 1917 on Bainbridge Island. Her mother, Dorothy Fay Gould, was one of the first women to teach at the University of Washington, and her father, Carl F. Gould, was the architect of many of Seattle's landmark buildings and much of the university campus. Anne took a class from Mark Tobey at the Cornish School and in 1935 enrolled in the University of Washington School of Architecture, in a program that produced such architectural leaders as Victor Steinbreuck, Paul Hayden Kirk, and Roland Terry.

In 1941 she married John H. Hauberg, Jr., grandson of the co-founder of the Weyerhaeuser Company. When two of their children were born with mental disabilities, Anne refused to accept the standard practice of institutionalization and held out hope for the development of alternative care. Her unyielding conviction spawned the Pilot School for Neurologically Impaired Children, today the highly regarded Experimental Education Unit at the University of Washington.

Anne Gould Hauberg is legendary for her advocacy of artists, the creative spirit, and the handmade object. Her openness to creative possibility contributed most famously to the beginnings of the Pilchuck Glass School. Hers has been a life of commitment, filled with passion for beauty and for universal access to art. As Priscilla Beard writes, "The Northwest would be a far less colorful place were it not for the unique personal vision, style, and indefatigable energy of this thoroughly modern Medici."

                                Book Description

Photo ops, aka photo opportunities, are a staple of political management. Photo oops are photo ops with a twist. In BUSH Oops, 110 hysterically human shots of Dubya have been culled from news bureaus and captioned for even more pointed effect.

In this regime of meticulously staged, compulsively controlled presidential appearances on podium and screen, on aircraft carrier or Mt. Rushmore, it is a relief to be reminded that accidents do happen, sometimes for the sidesplitting benefit of the dutiful audience.

5 out of 5 stars When Photo Ops become Photo Oops..........2005-03-11

This is just a fun little book. What we have here is a collection of 107 photos. There is nothing special about any of these pictures.A lot of them were actully posed for but a totally unconnected caption is added that makes the connection very humorous.A lot of the others are shots that are taken when the President is off guard, relaxed,or even clowning around. It is easy to get shots like this since the cameras are flashing continuously. It kind of reminds me of when I tried to get my 3 kids to pose for a group shot.It also shows how much expressions change even when they are aware that a camera is on them. So, to anyone who has lots of "discards",it is quite simple to spread some out and come up with some great comments to attach to them. One should not take offense at these photos or add any particular political bias over it all as it has been done about many prominent persons.Any world leader and particularly the Queen of England and the Pope are often subjects and of course all presidents at all times.
I am sure President Bush would get a good laugh out of them, and could even come up with as good or better captions.
An even better approach would be to take an actual comment made, then add it to a totally disconnected photo. It would even be fun to take the photos in this book, remove the captions and come up with your own.Hey,have I just invented a parlour game?
This same thing has frequently been done with animals. One of my favorites is a head shot of a Bald Eagle with the caption "But I am smiling".
For some time I have kept a collection of shots of celebrity faces ,with everything removed but the eyes. It's like a puzzle book where the object is to guess who the eyes belong to. Maybe it would be fun to make your own book of photos, either your own snapshots or photos from papers or magazines and come up with your own captions.Who says you could never write a book?
Anyway, an entertaining little book that is good for a half hour's look through;but an idea that could be developed as a personal or group entertainment.

                                5 out of 5 stars Very Funny.......2004-06-07

This book features a great selection of mostly less-than-flattering images of W. The captions that accompany each photo make for a pretty hilarious, light-hearted book. Even if you're a Bush fan, there's enough humor in here to keep you laughing out loud.

3 out of 5 stars a biased sequel to a great unbiased book.......2004-05-11

The first book "Photo Oops" contained photos of many different politicians both Democrat, Republican and others in awkward moments.

This book contains solely photos of President Bush in awkward moments. From this, it appears that the authors decided to join in on the "Bush bashing" Aren't there enough new photos yet for a bipartisan book? (not that I suppport Bush) There are certianly a lot of Bush photos, maybe because he got most of the media attention.

They should do a third book after the election is over with some of the candidates in awkward moments. The photo of Howard Dean's famous scream would be a great cover photo!
