Book Description
First published in 1987 by Fortress Press, this 20th anniversary edition of this classic bestseller includes a new Afterword from the author. Here, in narrative form, is an account of the activity of Jesus of Nazareth, scrupulously constructed so that it does not undercut the insights of New Testament scholarship. What makes it different from other such attempts is that Jesus never actually appears. What we find everywhere is his shadow, his effect.
Such an approach avoids the usual pitfalls of the genre and lends this story - attributed to a fictitious narrator - an attraction, freshness, and power all its own. Tension and interest are maintained to the end, even for those sated with books about Jesus. Careful documentation in the footnotes shows how much of the narrative is based on ancient sources.
Customer Reviews:
The Shadow of the Galilean.......2007-08-09
A bit disappointing in a way. I was waiting for the main character to meet up with Jesus, but he never does. Didn't give very much information on Jesus.
Learning with Trying To.......2007-04-05
In this beautiful, interesting and easy to read narrative, imaginary characters are introduced from around the time of Jesus. In this "story" Theissen creatively allows the parties, issues, concerns, and major characters of Historical Jesus research to arrive within the storyline itself. In so doing he makes them believeable and sympathetic. This is an utterly unique way of beginning the educational journey through Jesus' history and all of the theories and personalities present. I was hooked from the first page. If you are interested in historical Jesus research I recommend this book as an interesting, unusual, and brilliant way to begin the journey.
Poorly written, sometimes heretical.......2006-11-01
I was very disappointed in this book. It is poorly written and contains many grammatical errors. Theissen's Jesus seems limited to restructuring Jewish society and also seems more involved in politics than the Biblical Jesus. Theissen also suggests that Jesus' miracles weren't really miracles. One of the characters, a wealthy woman who supports Jesus, says,
"When I or others send him food . . . and my people suddenly bring it out, the crowd thinks it's a miracle that there's so much to eat. These poor people have often never seen so much food all at once. If you like, it's indeed a miracle." (page 120)
Later, she adds,
"[H]e knows that the people have an exaggerated belief in miracles because they mistrust their own powers. So he often stresses that `Your faith has healed you.' He explicitly says: "I didn't do the miracle; the power to become whole lies in you yourself.' He wants to cure these little people of their superstitious mistrust of themselves." (page 123)
Although the book was somewhat interesting, I didn't think that it was worth the time spent reading it. I would recommend Lew Wallace's Ben-Hur, perhaps, as an alternative to this book.
A different twist to Jesus.......2001-07-19
It is told from a very interesting point of view. A person who is seeking Jesus, always one step behind, gets to see the results of Jesus' good deeds along the way. Some of them didn't quite come out as one would expect. Often, chaos fell upon the villages, resulting from the interference of Jesus. It's a different view point of Jesus and his work along the way.
"Experiencing" Those Who Interpreted Jesus.......2000-08-02
In this amazing and enjoyable book, Gerd Theissen (pronounced "Tyson") allows us to experience Jesus the Galilean in a way which demonstrates the manner in which the Christian Testament came to exist. To attempt to understand Jesus is to interpret Jesus, and through the eyes of Theissen's characters we see a theoretical construct at work which is not only insightful, but also faithful to the methods of modern biblical criticism and Christian theology as a whole. I highly recommend this book for those who would like insights into the development of the Christian canon of scripture and for those who wish to better understand the Jewishness of Jesus.
Pastors, lay leaders and religious educators of all types will gain invaluable information from this work. It is both scholarly and easy-to-read and it has been enjoyed and cited by educators and theologians alike.

Book Description
Abigail Timberlake Washburn, petite but feisty proprietor of Charleston's Den of Antiquity antiques shop, stopped speaking to best friend and temporary decorating partner Wynnell Crawford a month ago -- after questioning her choice of a cheap, three-foot-high replica of Michaelangelo's David to adorn the garden of a local bed-and-breakfast. But now Wynnell has broken the silence with one phone call ... from prison! It seems the b&b owner has been fatally beaned -- allegedly by the same tacky statue -- and Wynnell's been fingered by the cops for the bashing. But Abby suspects there's more to this well-sculpted slaying than initially meets the eye, and she wants to take a closer look at the not-so-bereaved widower and the two very odd couples presently guesting at the hostelry. Because if bad taste was a capital crime, Wynnell would be guilty as sin -- but she's certainly no killer!
Customer Reviews:
Thought It Was Just Ok.......2006-12-16
I thought this book was just ok. Didn't think it was anything special. At times this author reminded me of Janet Evanovich's wisecracking nosy characters but then the plot would falter or the characters would change. I think part of the problem is this is the first book of the series I've read and from reading the other reviews the earlier books were stronger and more interesting. I think I'm going to try at least one of them because of the glimpses of good storytelling I found in this book. I didn't hate this book. I actually liked it but just felt there could have been so much more that the author could have done with it. I'm not going to write a plot summary since Amazon and other reviewer have already did this. I just didn't like how it seems like the author would introduce characters and give them a role then forget them. I think I would want to try the other books in this series first before I recommend this book. It's not a great book as a stand alone.
Wynnell Crawford Visits the Big House.......2005-09-13
As the eleventh entry in this series opens our petite heroine Abigail Timberlake Washburn is about to start a new job. No, she is not giving up her antique business but she is going to take on a little side project for one of the matrons of Charleston society. Mrs. Marina Webbfingers has decided to open a bed and breakfast and wants Abby to decorate the rooms. Knowing just how much publicity this project could bring to her antique business, Abby is just thrilled. But for every silver lining there must be a dark cloud and along comes her best friend Wynnell Crawford who has followed Abby and most of her other friends to Charleston. Things aren't going so well for Wynnell and she begs Abby to let her assist with the project. Abby reluctantly agrees but instead Wynnell ends up redesigning the garden space at the B&B to be, and from there all the problems arise.
Wynnell finds a three-foot copy of the famous David statue lying in some weeds and places it in a prominent place in the garden. Abby thinks the statue is tacky and tells Wynnell so and the two best friends spend several weeks not speaking to each other. The next thing Abby knows, Wynnell is in jail accused of the murder of Mrs. Webbfingers. It turns out that the deceased and Wynnell had a loud falling out that only got worse when Mrs. Webbfingers called Wynnell a Yankee. When the lady of the house is found bludgeoned to death Wynnell is the obvious suspect and despite their fight Abby sets out to prove that her best friend is innocent.
This book is a little less whimsical than some of it's predecessors but it is still great fun. The author even injects herself into the story albeit with a slightly rearranged name. The best thing about this book however is the return of Wynnell Crawford who was missing from the last two books. The crotchety, Yankee hating Wynnell adds so much to these stories that it would be a shame if her character had completely disappeared. Abby's brother Toy also shows up in this story and has a fairly large role although his character could use some more fleshing out. At the end of the book the reader is clearly given the impression that we will be hearing much more from Toy in the future.
On the negative side, some of the major players in this series are almost ignored in this story. Abby's husband Greg is a bit player at best and CJ and her Shelby stories only make rare appearances. Worst of all, Abby's mother is not heard from nearly often enough and it is her quirky and unpredictable character that makes this series so much fun. The reader will also have a slight problem keeping the suspects straight for there are at least seven suspects other than Wynnell and many of them have an alias. That makes for a lot of names to keep up with and I found that I was not always up to the task. It was hard enough just trying to keep up with the murder weapon and it's long history. On top of that, everyone seems to be following Abby around to see what she is up to. Greg is following her, the Rob-Bobs are supposed to be keeping track of her and some toothless guy in a pickup truck is following her very closely. It was all just a tad confusing.
Still, despite the faults I found this to be a very enjoyable read. While some of the whimsy may be missing there are still plenty of laughs and despite all of the confusion, everything comes together in the end and it all finally makes sense. Let's just keep Abby's mother front and center in the future please.
Limitations Likeable.......2004-08-28
This latest book in Tamar Myers' 'Den of Antiquity' series has Abby trying to absolve her best friend of being accused of murder. The suspects are all staying at a B & B, and since there are three couples involved it can get a little confusing, but Ms. Myers is good at differentiating between her interesting characters. Some laughs are there, but not as plentiful as in her "Penn/Dutch" series books. The main character, Abby, seems to be lacking something to flesh her out all the way. She's not really likeable, and she is not disliked, but on the blah side. She's a short (4 foot-something) lady. Okay, we got it Ms. Myers. It'd be nice to have more to go on. Her fight with her husband in this book seemed based on little and does not warrant reader sympathy for either of them. It only sounds like she's dumb for walking out on the great-looking husband he is supposed to be. The supporting cast of regular characters surpass Abby in charm and general characterization. Still a very good read and not to be missed.
Another good read from Tamar Myers.......2004-08-03
I have followed this whole series, and this is on par with the others. Abby continues the new life in Charleston, while we get to know a little more about Abby's brother and Wynnell's husband as Abby tries to save her friend Wynnell from being convicted of murder. Much of the book seems to avoid dealing with the old characters (such mama, Greg, and Wynnell). In other situations, it appeared that some characters were introduced for a purpose (such as the lawyer), but not much was done with them in the end. There are a few twists that make this an interesting read. The humor typically comes from Abby's sassy remarks, as always, but the humor starts to wear off after awhile.
Statue of Limitations.......2004-07-22
Abigail Timberlake Washburn, the owner of a Charleston antique shop called the Den of Antiquity, is back again. In this book she is flattered when Marina Webbfingers, the owner of a local bed and breakfast asks her to decorate some rooms for her. Abby's friend Wynnell wants to join in by doing the landscaping for the B & B. All is well until Wynell uses a copy of Michelangelo's David for the garden and Abby states her objections in no uncertain terms. Abby and Wynell quarrel and the next time Wynell is heard from, she is calling from the local jail. Marina has been murdered and Wynell is the chief suspect. Putting aside their differences, Abby lends a hand in the investigation in order to secure Wynell's release. In the meantime, Wynell's husband has asked Abby to entertain the guests at the B & B and Abby discovers that none of them are who they claim to be. In her usual hilarious fashion, Abby interferes with the police investigation and comes to her own conclusions about the guilty party. Tamar Myers fans will enjoy this latest entry into the Den of Antiquity Mystery series.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A727014. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This effort explores the statute of limitation ("SOL") issues facing DOD agencies seeking reimbursement for GOCO- (Government-Owned Contractor- Operated military industrial facilities) related voluntarily initiated environmental response costs pursuant to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act. The SOL for such reimbursement various drastically depending upon the legal basis for the reimbursement action and the United States Circuit Court of Appeals circuit in which it is brought. For instance, one circuit has held that there is no federal cause of action to recoup costs for such voluntary cleanups unless the plaintiff is the recipient of an abatement order or embroiled in litigation. Under that holding, CEROLA SOLs are not even an issue since the court decided that state-based claims for contribution are the only available remedy for such plaintiffs. Conversely, the SOL for reimbursement actions in the other circuits can range from as short a period as three years to there being no time-bar whatsoever.

A True American Hero.......2004-01-05
Manly Wade Wellman is perhaps one of the greatest sci-fi/fantasy/horror pulp writters in American literature. His stories drew upon a rich vein of southern folk lore from the Appalachias mixing Cherokee myths with Scots-Irish ballads. His character John (just named John) is a likable hero who wanders the mountains with his silver strung guitar, thwarting all manner of supernatural threats with his wits, common sense and knowledge of the old ballads. Along the way he ecnounters hoodoo men, witch-women, ghosts, raven-mockers, familars and all kinds of other horrors living in the backwoods. In this collection, all of the Silver John short stories are collected together (though there are five full length novels featuring the character, and Wellman liked to claim that two other short stories featured John before he got the guitar).
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Wellman's fiction is that it does draw upon uniquely American themes, and John is a very down-to-earth hero of the common people. As such, it really earns its place as something that represents the best ideals of American folk lore. Definately worth checking out, especially if your into Lovecraft, Shaver, Blackwood and the like. And if you like this collection, then check out some of the other anthologies of Wellman's work. Trust me, you'll like it.
Huge fan since teen age.......2003-07-16
I went and bought this book after I came across a copy of one of his old books on the street. However, I recommend you check out 5 volume series from Night Shade Books of all of Wellman's short stories. One volume has all of the Silver John Stories.
The Perfect Starter.......1999-12-20
If you have yet to read any of the Silver John stories then here is the place to start, since the short stories collected in this volume are perhaps the finest writings Wellman did about this wonderful character. "John The Balladeer" is really an expanded and updated version of "Who Fears The Devil?" but does suffer slightly from having the small vignettes from that collection grouped together, which rather lessens their impact. Although the tales of John are out of print they can easily be found on the second-hand market, with the exception of the final volume "The Voice of the Mountain" which is harder to locate. All are well worth the effort of looking.
The only problem with reading this book..........1999-01-27
...is that it will whet your appetite for other stories about Silver John and they're all out of print. Wellman, who lived in the Appalachians and knew their people, uses these stories to illustrate the kind of people who lived up in the 'hollers', their lore (told correctly, I suspect) and their music (correct, I know). There are some hints of something transcendent, that John may be more than just a man who 'bears some of the goodness of others of that name', and there is history woven into these accounts, but both only add depth to some well-told stories worth the reading.

Customer Reviews:
A Disappointment.......2007-01-19
I didn't care for this book. It was only a discussion about how bio identical hormones can create or maintain health, according to the author and her experiences. It wasn't broad enough or particularly compelling, to me.
What a waste of money.......2005-07-13
I really regret buying this book. All the author does is basically recommend for you to take the natural hormones that she sells prescriptions for in her practice.
An excellent book that I recommend for both sexes.......2005-05-12
What do acne, PMS, menstrual cramps, insomnia, migraines, mood swings, hot flashes, depression, weight gain, and loss of sex drive have in common? They're all symptoms of hormone imbalance that can affect women from adolescence through menopause, according
to Dr. Erika Schwartz in THE HORMONE SOLUTION--an excellent book that I recommend for both sexes.
I know it opened my eyes to many things; in particular, the fact that men can have many of these same symptoms . . . and actually go through something called andropause (or male menopause, if you want to think of it in those terms).
The good news is that that help is available; i.e., through the use of natural hormones derived from soy and yams . . . Dr. Schwartz stated prescribing these natural forms of estrogen and progesterone for herself and her patients, and the results have been nothing short
of amazing.
THE HORMONE SOLUTION takes a complex issue that has only recently been addressed by the medical community and addresses it in a simple, understandable book that could well be used as a guide for many readers and/or their loved ones . . . in addition, it is a work
that others may well want to discuss with their doctors.
There were several memorable passages; among them:
What I had not realized before was that all these hormone imbalances are connected and could be treated successfully with natural hormone supplementation. The more women of different ages and different symptoms came to see me, the more convinced I became of the continuum of hormone changes we are subjected to at all ages. Natural hormone treatment was invariably successful and had none of the side effects associated with other types of
medications. That was because natural hormones treated the root cause of the problems with substances closely resembling the missing or out-of-balance hormones our bodies make. There was no potentially harmful, synthetic substances in this hormone
supplementation program.
Unfortunately, the medical profession has not been keen on addressing this obvious similarity to female menopause. Most doctors are men, and menopause does not have a pretty ring to it--it's about aging. And men are more afraid than women to address the inevitability of this process. Men pride themselves on the ability to father children into their eighties, so how could they be having the same problems as again women? (The truth,
by the way, is that men who father children naturally in their eighties are as rare as women who give birth in their fifties.)
All scientists agree: Hormones are the common thread that makes up the fabric of our lives. They define us as men and women when we're young, they keep us healthy or make us
sick, and yet the understanding we have of them is vague, contradictory, and inconsistent. . . . Unequivocally, the scientific community knows that hormone levels change every minute of
the day, so why get hung up on one or two changes: menopause and puberty? A small step for science, a giant step for women. Once you make that connection, once you identify the
continuum of hormone changes, menopause is a lot less scary, and its devastation just another mountain to scale.
Nutrition instead of HRT.......2005-03-31
Dr. Schwartz, I have some very important information you will be glad to know about what you said in the CBS Early Show regarding alternatives to treating menopause. If you want to know about a very effective treatment that is available without a prescription, contact me at www.dlynntaylor@hotmail.com. Women all over the country will welcome the addition of this information to your book.
A Man and Wife's Perspective.......2002-05-03
I originally purchased this book having my wife and her ever-changing moods in mind. After skimming through the index, I realized that hormone imbalance is not simply a problem for females, but also applied to my life as a middle-aged man. My wife and I both loved this well written book and found a simple and natural way to stay young (and bring back our sex life).
Thanks doc.
