Book #1 in this series.......2007-08-13
I read this book when it came out and failed to post a review, but did make notes via index card and here goes. Pardon the dust.
This series is about Rachael and Willow Foster. Sisters.
This book is Rachael's story with Keenan Oakes.
I enjoyed this book. Obviously. Two likeable characters. Rachael and her father designed this ultra modern home (run by massive computer system).
Bad things happen in the house and she avoids it. The house is closed for sometime until Keenan and his entourage move in.
Full of twists and a good read.
Charismatic couple makes this a first rate romantic adventure.......2006-12-06
Former architect Rachel has not returned to Sub Rosa, the mansion where her parents died since the fateful night that she found the bodies, and discovered that her mother was unfaithful with the millionaire on the hill. Just as the new heir to Sub Rosa is moving into the mansion, she receives a letter preceding her father's death by two years, where he details his involvement in a smuggling ring, and discovers that many of the cherished items she and her sister have were stolen. She decides to return the loot to Sub Rosa, but gets caught on the way out.
Keenan Oakes is a scavenger/mercenary. His merry band of bruisers will do anything within reason for money - salvaging, rescuing kidnap victims, etc. He and his friends have moved into Sub Rosa and have discovered that the mansion has been looted. When they capture Rachel, Kee wonders if this sexy gal is the one who has been stealing from his estate, and can't help but come under her spell. Already whipped to beguiling pint-sized dictator and daughter Mikaela, Kee finds that his heart is open to allowing another gal in. But he and the guys are keeping some pretty big secrets... And after seeing the damage that passion caused to her parents, Rachel is not sure a happily ever after is in her future.
Chapman's predecessor to "The Dangerous Protector" is just as funny and sensuous - Rachel and Kee make a strong duo - they perfectly play off each other (particularly when he is "interrogating" her), and you really get a sense of where Willow's antagonistic relationship with Duncan began (and thankfully the Scottish brogue is kept to a minimum). Great start to a great series!
The Seductive Imposter.......2006-11-18
Janet Chapman is my new favorite author. This book is wonderful. It grabs you from the start and keeps you going. I couldn't put it down. The characters are so fascinating. Where are all these guys? I am ready to move to Maine.
adventure and romance.......2006-10-04
I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. This story takes place on the coast of Maine. Rachel the main character is still grieving over the deaths of her parents. When she finds out her father an architect had given both her and her sister(Willow) stolen items as gifts. She tries to return the items to the house, where the items were taken. However, she is surprised by the early arrival of the new owner, a man who is rather mysterious with secrets of his own.
There are many enjoyable and even funny parts to this book. One of my favorites is when Willow tries to drive a new/borrowed truck.
If you like romance, adventure or even a good mystery. I think you will like this book.
Secret Rooms and Stolen Treasures.......2006-08-01
An amazing novel from Janet Chapman. The main character, Rachel, grew up apprenticing to be an architect like her father. Together they built a truly "smart" mansion to house a local man's treasures. When her parents and the man die in a murder-suicide/love triangle mess in the house, Rachel abandons the house and her passion for architecture. The book opens with the local man's heir coming to town three year's after the tragedy to claim his fortune. At the same time, Rachel finds out that the local man also brokered in stolen treasures and gave many to her father. He tells Rachel, via a note left with their attorney, that he built secret rooms for the illegal goods in both her house and the smart mansion. Rachel tries to sneak in to put the stolen goods in the mansion's vault for the new heir to deal with, but is caught. Rachel and the heir (Kee) partner to solve the mystery of the stolen goods and some legitimate treasures missing from the mansion, but they both hold back on the other.
Kee resembles a modern day pirate, complete with crew and an adorable five year old daughter. Rachel is in desparate need of an adventure. Together they fall in love, find the bad guys, recover the treasures, and still find time to entertain the town. You won't be able to put this book down, it is a truly enjoyable read.

The Nail On The Head.......2006-12-01
"When the Sacred Ginmill Closes" is one of my favorite books ever. The way Block looks back and remembers things and doesn't remember things and the kind of perspective he puts all of it in is very close to home. It is one of those rare things in a book that really makes you feel like you have a kinship with the author. Lots of us have lived through not just a few booze soaked years. And sometimes it is natural to have, if not fond memories of these crazy times, then at least not a fatalistic view of them either. It is hard to say why some books are so important to some people, this is one of those.
Had this not been the first book of this series that I read, I probably wouldn't have read any more of it. That's not to say that the other books in this series aren't good, but this was certainly the right one to get your attention. Speaking of the series, this book could easily have been a cliche, since it is the transition between drunkenness and then muddle and then sobreity. It seems like most series have to have that one book that is a device to introduce different moods or relationships for the character. The way it was done here was taking the alcoholic side of it to a new level. It seemed like a brief moment of clarity that some alcoholics have years down the road. When something that happened back then all of a sudden comes back into your conciousness and it is clearly remembered and considered as it just happened a few days ago. Sometimes these moments are the greatest thing in the world, even if they are about something which is all to forgettable. What a book.
Oh that wonderful sleaze!.......2006-02-28
This is the first time that I've read a Matthew Scudder novel, and I must say that I enjoyed it. Matt Scudder is one of the most human hard-bitten detectives that I've ever come across. And Block does not shy away from hard and dismal topics. This book is about drinking friendships. He points out throughout the book that people really don't know the people that they drink with. It is also about betrayal, greed and it even has a cold-blooded killer. Block really knows his city, and that comes across in these pages. It reminded me of "The Maltese Falcon". Block knows New York and its people in this setting (which is 1970's New York) like Hammett knew 1920's San Franscisco. This is high praise indeed because The Maltese Falcon is such a perfect detective story. This one measures up just as well. I will have to read more of Matt Scudder, I think.
Best of the Scudder novels.......2006-01-23
In my opinion the best of this series. Block at times is a formulaic machine, almost a hack. Not in this book however. There is nuance and real texture, pretty close to literature if you will. Block nails the NYC of the early 70's, the corruption, the IRA "lads" running about, a true sense of danger that could flare from the most mundane source. This is "Hell's Kitchen" pre gentrification. Well worth the time and effort.
Scudder is the greatest crime protagonist out there.......2005-05-05
I am writing this because I was looking to see what others were saying about my favorite mystery/crime character. The latest few reviews were pretty hard on Block and I just want to put a few things straight.
First of all, Block is a very hit or miss author. He has written dozens of books and maybe only 25% of them are Scudder novels. He has written just as many 'Burglar' books that are more akin to Agatha Christy than Dashiel Hammett, and I am not their biggest fan. Besides that, Block has written countless short stories and started a few other series' that are in comparison to Scudder, uninspired.
What Block has done here is not write just one book and then continue to revise the same plot over and over as so many mystery writers do. Instead, as a reader you should start at the beginning of this series 'Sins of our Fathers' where you will find a Matthew Scudder, moderately in control of his alcoholism. This is not the best Block, but it is pretty important to follow the development of this amazing character from one book to the next.
By the time you come to 'Ginmill,' '8 Million Ways to Die,' or others further along in the series, you will have found yourself keenly aware of the small developments of Matthew Scudder as a character. 'Ginmill' is a key Scudder novel in that it marks a transitional point that opens up new horizons in coming books and acts as a bridge in many ways. If you have not read the preceding books, and don't wait to judge 'Ginmill' until reading a few more, this will not be apparent.
Secondly, 'Ginmill,' like all of the Scudder novels, is not earth shattering. After you have read hundreds of thrillers where the earth hangs in the balance every time, it is refreshing to pick up a Scudder book that is all about smaller mundane everyday occurrences. These pages are all the more satisfying due to the fact that Block is using this book to really explore a character that he has already spent a great deal of time and energy with.
I would highly recommend this series as a whole, it is one of two that really follow a primary character through a lifetimes worth of changes. The other that I am keenly thinking of as I write this would be by John Fante, and I would even recommend his work over Blocks (high praise). If you have read most of Block's work and would like to find another author who treats a character this way, start with Fante's 'Arturo Bandini' books (Fante's alter ego) and then pick up the rest of them. They all fit nicely together portraying a life from infancy to senility.
What story?.......2003-09-20
I think there was a possiblity of a great plot in there somewhere with some great characters but it read more like an authors notes than a book. If you think show not tell is over rated in writing then this is a book you'll love. It is a flash back of a drunk telling you what he remembers which "ain't" much.
The characters are only seen thru the eyes of the speaker who does a lousy job of telling you what they are like. The speaker, Matt Scrudder, does nothing to involve us in his life or plight. Anger, love, hate, are all missing from the feelings he evokes. Sheer boredom is not. "Well you see I tied one on all year and to the best of my memory here is what I remember before the brain damage." Whoop time to go get the coffee while this speaker talks.
Matt Scrudder comes across as a joke. James Lee Burke carrys it off and involves us with Dave. Kellerman has us hoping Milo stays straight. Block does not with Scudder.
There are several plots going on at the same time none of which tie into each other or at least tie in well except in his recall of the summer of 75. It should have stayed there. Let me know when he's done speaking. I'll come back with my coffee.

Book Description
Human society on Jevlen was falling apart -- and it looked as if JEVEX, the immense super-computer that managed all Jevlenese affairs, was at the heart of the matter. Except that the problems didn't stop when JEVEX was shut down. People were changing -- or being changed. It was almost as if the Jevlenese were being possessed...
Meanwhile, in a very different universe, where magic worked and nothing physical was predictable, holy men caught glimpses of another place, a place where the shape of objects remained unchanged by motion, and cause led directly and logically to effect. And the best part was that when the heart was pure, the mind was focused, and circumstances were right, some lucky souls could actually make the transition to that other universe. If only they all could...

Number 4 in the story of the "gentle giants of Ganymede" .......2006-11-16
This is the fourth book in the "Giants" series which began with "Inherit the stars" and continues with "The Gentle Giants of Ganymede" and "Giants Star."
The first three books in the series are also available in a "3 in 1 Giants Omnibus" and there is now a subsequent fifth book, "Mission to Minerva".
Continues the story which started when human ideas of our place in the Universe were turned completely topsy-turvy by the discovery of a 50,000 year old human body on the moon in "Inherit the Stars" which was one of the most brilliant SF novels ever written.
I thought the story had finished with "Giant's star" but James Hogan finds a way to continue it with brilliant new twist. Something is going wrong on the planet Jevlen, and to solve it the heroes of the first three books have their minds projected inside a huge computer - where they find a whole different kind of Universe.
About the only thing on which I agree with the reviewers who trashed this book is that it's not quite as good as the first three. However, I think it's still well worth a read if you are into science fiction and original ideas.
Don't waste your time with this one, read a GOOD book........2003-09-01
I love the clear, clean, crisp writing of James P. Hogan. The solid scientific research behind his scenarios cannot be hidden.
His plots are anything but trite. But after reading this one I am forced to the conclusion that Mr. Hogan was doing some bad drugs at the time he wrote it. It is muddy, murky, and overlong.
It bears almost no resemblance to anything else he has written.
It is confused and confusing. It is boring and unsatisfying.
Avoid at all costs!
Fails to deliver like the previous 3 novels........2001-01-06
Entoverse is the fourth novel following the Giant's Trilogy. Like the previous three, the same characters can be found throughtout. Also, there is a great deal of scientific research done by the main characters. But unlike the previous three novels, this novel fails to maintain interest and can be confusing.
First off, the novel takes you back to Jevlen, following the "Pseudowar" between the Thuriens and the Jevlenese. The supercomputer JEVEX has been shut down....or so all non-Jevelense think. In harsh reality, JEVEX is still running at a small rate, but there is a totally different world living in its system. The author has created a new world for us to explore, however it turns out that this world does not follow the laws of physics in our universe. To make it even more confusing, it seems that this world is merely just a computer generated pattern designed by the Jevlenese. To complicate things even more, the inhabitants of this "new" world, are taking over the bodies of our universe.
Now, don't get me wrong, I am one for all types of science fiction and new ideas. As a matter of fact, I think unique ideas make a science fiction novel. But this idea has gone too far. The novel becomes confusing because this world is run through a computer process. Yes, it is a new idea, but the idea has been taken to far. In fact, this novel does not have the quality writing and suspense as found in the previous three novels. It seems this novel was written just to be written, lacking purpose and further muddying the waters. I do not recommend this novel, as a matter of fact, if you read the previous three novels, you might want to stop there, because this one could leave you highly disappointed.
Fascinating Speculative Fiction.......1999-11-09
Hogan, as usual (Giants, Lifemaker, Thrice Upon a Time), does a magnificent job creating a gripping story based on plausible-sounding scientific principles. Hogan's writing is quite intricate, and he does a great job tying up seemingly unimportant loose ends. Some of the character development seemed a little artificial, though. I would strongle recommend having read the first three Giants books, although this story does stand mostly on its own.
A Great Read!!.......1999-02-19
I could not put this book down! It is a brilliant mystery book, with a fair amount of action thrown in for good measure. My only regret is that I have not read the previous three books in the series, so I was, so to speak, thrown in at the deep end, with no knowledge of the characters. All the same, I was able to pick up the story very quickly. I just wish that it had been longer!

stretched a good story to far.......1999-07-13
The first three books were excellent, however I think Mr. Hogan stretched the story to far. First of all it took till chapter 22 to finally get in to what the story was actually about and although Mr. Hogan has a great way of tying things together at the end of the story, it was just not the same. Next time, don't listen to your agent Mr. Hogan.

Book Description
This most complete parent guide covers not only detailed and precise medical information about leukemia and the various treatment options, but also day-to-day practical advice on how to cope with procedures, hospitalization, family and friends, school, social and financial issues, communication, feelings, and, if therapy is not successful, the difficult issues of death and bereavement. Woven among the medical details and the practical advice are the voices of parents and children who have lived with leukemia and its treatments. As many parents have already found, advice from "veteran" parents can be a lifeline. Obtaining a basic understanding of topics such as medical terminology, how drugs work, common side effects of chemotherapy, and how to work more effectively with medical personnel can only improve the quality of life for the whole family suffering along with their leukemic child. Having parents describe their own emotional ups and downs, how they coped, and how they molded their family life around hospitalizations can be a tremendous comfort. Just knowing that there are other kids on chemotherapy who refuse to eat anything but tacos or who have frequent rages can make one feel less alone. Parents who read this book will encounter medical facts simply explained, advice to ease their daily life, and tools to be a strong advocate for their child. This third edition contains significant updates to the information on treatments, chemotherapy drugs, bone marrow transplants, coping with side effects, and resources. It also contains a personal treatment summary and long-term follow-up guide for your child to keep as a permanent record.

A "Must-Have" for the family.......2007-01-04
I was loaned the 2nd Edition in the hospital after our son was diagnosed with ALL. This book is so valuable to the family to help you learn and weather through all the processes you could face during this difficult time. I knew I had to have my own copy and bought a second copy of the 3rd edition to share with other families through the hospital. Many other members of our family intend to buy their own copies of the book as well.
If you are hungry for information, buy this book. It calmed my nerves and made me a better team member in my son's fight against cancer.
For any Parents whose child is diagnosed with Leukemia.......2006-11-06
Our Son was diagnosed in April of 2006 with ALL Leukemia. Trying to understand all of the terms, meds and schedules is hard enough. This book is written by a Mom with the help of her Doctor's expertise. It puts very scary helpless feelings in laymen's terms. This Mom goes into detail on how to comfort and successfully treat your child. She gives you her experiences on what works and what doesn't and what to expect. It is also an up- to- date book, whereas many books were written years ago. As a Mom who has gone thru 7+ months of this diagnosis, I wish someone would have given me this book the moment our Son was diagnosed. It's great for the whole family to read as well.
A Necessary and Informative Guide on Chilldhood leukemia.......2006-03-21
As a grandparent of a recently diagnosed 3 year old with ALL leukemia I have found this book an important resource for me to understand the treatment for this terrible disease. The descriptions of the types of chemo used and its side-effects have been particulalry valuable during the early months since the diagnosis. The book is comprehensive with all aspects of the disease and is full of anecdotal and suggestions for coping with this disease at all phases of treatment. It also offers lists of available resources to be accessed. I highly recommend this book for parents, family members and caregivers.
Wish this book was available 23 years ago!.......2004-07-30
I have been a survivor of ALL Leukemia for 23 years now, and really wish there were books like this then. But now is when all these books are coming out, I am trying to find a book or information on how long term survivors can cope with the long term issues we face.
Topics like planning for college, buying a home, saving for retirement. These are issues my mother addressed with me, and now it is too late to start addressing these issues for me. For others it is not to late. We are surviving longer, and this is a new arena for the doctors and social workers need to address.
This Book is the Bible of Childhood Leukemia!.......2003-09-17
When my son was diagnosed in July 2002 with ALL, I didn't even know what Leukemia was. I ordered this book from Amazon right away. Over a year later, I found myself still looking to this book for reference. After the doctors explain something to me I come home and look it up in this book and understand even better exactly what's going on with my son. If you know anyone with leukemia get a copy for yourself and for the parents of that child. (I have never written a review for a book before but felt compelled to tell people how helpful this book has been to me.)
