Unlike the Graces of Greek mythology, the ones in Patricia Gaffney's feel-good novel, The Saving Graces, are not in the business of dispensing charm and beauty. Though they possess some measure of good looks, Gaffney's Graces are more focused on the less ethereal problems of life: men, careers, babies, death. And there are four, rather than three, of them (Emma, Rudy, Lee, and Isabel), who have been getting together for regular dinners in their Washington, D.C., homes for 10 years.

The narration of The Saving Graces rotates among the four women and gets right to the heart of each Grace--the stories they tell stick close to the territory of their emotional lives. This intimate directness makes Gaffney's women seem, well, womanly. Serene Isabel, who has always been "the best champion, the kindest friend" to all the other Graces, is dying of breast cancer. Rudy needs to leave her ultra-controlling husband. Lee, usually the rational one, is possessed by her desire to have a baby. Ironic Emma wants to write a novel and has a hard crush on a married man. This group feels messy and real: they keep secrets from each other, grate on one another's nerves, and analyze each other. But ultimately, all four know that they've lucked into a very good thing. Not just because they share the sweetness and silliness that comes with friendship, but also because they are willing to act as soldiers for each other. When Rudy finally gets up the nerve to leave her husband, for example, she doesn't do it alone: "Isabel stood on my right, Lee on my left. Emma had taken a seat on the bed--an escalation of the offense, usurping more enemy territory." In Gaffney's universe, women armed with grace, humor, and a couple of good girlfriends can transcend even the most painful events in their lives. --Katherine Anderson

Book Description

Meet the Saving Graces, four of the best friends a woman could ever have.

For ten years, Emma, Rudy, Lee, and Isabel have shared a deep affection that has helped them deal with the ebb and flow of expectations and disappointments common to us all. Calling themselves the Saving Graces, the quartet is united by understanding, honesty, and acceptance -- a connection that has grown stronger as the years go by.

Though these sisters of the heart and soul have seen it all, talked through it all, they are not prepared for the crisis of astounding proportions that will put their love and courage to the ultimate test.

5 out of 5 stars Isabel, Rudy, Emma and Lee are on my mind.......2006-08-02

I always have one criteria for judging whether I think a book or a movie deserves top ratings: if I'm still thinking about the story 24 hours after I've seen/read it, then it was worth my time. It's been over 24 hours since I finished "The Saving Graces" and I can't stop thinking about these four amazing women and their stories.

Sure, all of us have female friends. But how many of us have girlfriends that we consider sisters? If you're one of those lucky few, take the time to read this book. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. And, most important of all, it will make you thank God for the blessing of those special women in your life. Long live Isabel, Rudy, Emma and Lee in all of us!

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had some saving graces like these.......2006-03-22

I have not read Gaffney before but I was pleasantly surprised. The characters are strong and the best part of the novel is that each woman is able to tell her story in her own words.
strial -carpeted Rudy's battle with depression and a controlling husband and the way she believes she needs to be saved is a lesson for many of us. The graces "save" her by letting her know she can "save" herself and does not need to be enveloped by a husband who diminishes her. Isabel has the strongest voice in her stoicism in her pain. She describes the diagnostic cancer ward as "I've discovered purgatory. Not hell--it's too boring. Purgatory is low--lit and industrial--carpeted, mauve-walled, library-quiet...It's called the Diagnostic Imaging Center." this is an example of the descriptive words Gaffney uses to paint a picture of Isabel's outlook on her malady.

"Life's a circle, not a straight line, the longer the better. The circle never ends, it only widens." This may be a "chick lit" book; however, I think some of the insightful words like those above reflect the struggles and triumphs of each woman. Gaffney's book ranks higher on the chain of the "beach reads."

3 out of 5 stars Good girlfriend beach read.......2006-03-09

This is a good beach read, but it's not always light, so keep that in mind. On the plus side, this might be a good starter book for a book club as it's easy to read, keeps the reader's interest and provides some discussion points that won't ruffle any feathers. It's not too heavy but still thought provoking. On the down side, some of the characters actions didn't ring true, and some were too stereotypical and one dimensional. That being said, if you love the "small group of female friends who bond together in a crisis" genre, then you'll like this book.

5 out of 5 stars The most realistic portrayal of friendship between women..........2006-02-13

This book was recommended to me by my best girlfriend, and it was incredible. Every woman should read this book. It is incredibly realistic and truly captures the ups and downs of friendships between women. It's a heart warming and touching story that I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, emotional - a book almost any woman could relate to.......2006-01-31

This was the book chosen by my book club - and, as with most books my book club picks, it's not really my type of book. Despite this, I truly enjoyed this book. I, too, have 3 "best" friends. Unfortunately, we don't all live close enough to have dinner together regularly, but I could relate to so many of the incidents in the book.

Ms. Gaffney has a great casual writing style without being colloquial or too conversational. Her characters were well fashioned and consistent, particularly Lee - who despite going through some major changes remained a consistent character, and one which I could find believable. It was a bit difficult in the first 5-7 chapters to keep the characters straight and I became a bit frustrated, but it is very much worth that bit of frustration to get to the rest of the book. Each chapter is told from the viewpoint of one of the "Graces" and until I could keep them straight I had to keep flipping back to the last chapter with that character. Eventually, the storylines converge more directly and that problem disappears.

My only criticism would be the ending to Emma's storyline. I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but there is a quote from When Harry Met Sally that would be very appropriate to the situation. I didn't find the conclusion of her story arc to be very believable or realistic, in contradiction to the rest of the stories. Despite this small problem, I would recommend this book - particularly for a book club.

5 out of 5 stars Great story, great characters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-04-19

I have read all of the Hart family stories, but by far this was my favorite one. Grace sets out to get revenge on the company that discrimated on her father over 30 years ago when went to apply for a job, instead what she gets is the love of a lifetime in attorney everybody loves to hate Keith Hart. Keith is annoying and a smart mouth, but when he meets Grace he falls in love with and has to decide which more important his love for Grace or his top of the line career as an attorney for company that Grace is trying to get revenge on. I loved this story!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great one day read.......2003-11-07

I'm a big fan of ms.winters. This book was really funny. the romance was there but not enough to hold you over till the next screen. I rated this book a four due to the ending as much drama as this book I looked for more at the end. If you have not read the first two book I strongly advised that you do. (1)A Forever Passion Marcus Hart's story. (2)Love on the Run Bree Hart story. Enjoy the whole Hart clan

5 out of 5 stars Cigarette Boat King.......2007-07-19

I have really enjoyed this book. I like true stories, and am especially interested in speed boat racing, and stories about how the Mafia infiltrates businesses, and eventually takes them over! It certainly is an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Interested in Offshore Racing? Meet your idol, Mr Don Aronow.......1998-07-16

If you have an interest in offshore racing, take the time and read this compelling book about the father of the the industry. Ever heard of Thunderboat row? Find out the impact he had on some of the largest manufacturers in the country, and their attempts to to keep him out of the boat building business. You will learn about the rise and murder of Don Aronow and how state law enforcement of Florida(at the time led by the infamous Janet Reno) either bungled the investigation, or for whatever reason, let his death go unsolved. You will learn of the allegation that Don Aronow had ties to the mob, South American drug smugglers, and to the DEA. At the end you can surmise what you will of what his life was about, but you can't take away what he meant to the sport of offshore racing. Read it and pay homage.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent . . . A Must for the boater and mob afficionado!!!.......1997-03-17

This book has to be the best summary of politics, drug running, the offshore powerboat industry, the Mafia, crime, corruption and intrigue that I have ever read!! Aronow was an old friend of my family's in New Jersey and when he got murdered we all waited for the book to come out, sure enough it did and was excellent. If you love the mob, fast boats, fast cars, fast horses and beautiful women, BLUE THUNDER is a MUST READ!! Enjoy . . . . .H.L., Florida

        Book Description

After a brutal day investigating a quadruple homicide, Detective Hoke Moseley settles into his room at the un-illustrious El Dorado Hotel and nurses a glass of brandy. With his guard down, he doesn’t think twice when he hears a knock on the door. The next day, he finds himself in the hospital, badly bruised and with his jaw wired shut. He thinks back over ten years of cases wondering who would want to beat him into unconsciousness, steal his gun and badge, and most importantly, make off with his prized dentures. But the pieces never quite add up to revenge, and the few clues he has keep connecting to a dimwitted hooker, and her ex-con boyfriend and the bizarre murder of a Hare Krishna pimp.

Chronically depressed, constantly strapped for money, always willing to bend the rules a bit, Hoke Moseley is hardly what you think of as the perfect cop, but he is one of the the greatest detective creations of all time.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great opening book to the best series I have yet come across.......2006-09-07

Hey, is Willeford the man or what? I have spent the last few years devouring mystery/thriller/procedural books and had not come across Hoke Moseley until recently. I can't tell you how refreshing and cool it is to come across perhaps the greatest writer of this genre purely accidentally. Why isn't Willeford celebrated as the great author he is astounds me. Instead of millions reading James Patterson novels, it should be Willeford receiving the accolades. I just wish he were still around writing more books.

Miami Blues is a heck of a good novel; it's the first in the Hoke Moseley series and probably the worst, though it is still five stars all the way. If you have seen the entertaining movie Miami Blues with Baldwin, don't feel like this movie will compromise the reading experience, because it won't. Willeford's genius as an author comes forth here in the way that he plots the story line. Utterly original. His characters weave in and out of situations and conversations with a grace of a quick prizefighter. At one moment you are reading the very best of Bukowski and the next you are in an existential conversation mode ala McBain in his prime years. The opening gambit of a plot will resolve itself in the end, but the story here is about so much more, it's the journey along the way that brings the extra oomph.

I would not hesitate for a moment, buy this book, read the others in the series. You won't find a better mystery writer out there. Willeford is a god of prose and story telling.

        2 out of 5 stars hokey.......2005-09-19

I read this one for a book club - so it isn't my usual fare. This is a little bit more hard-boiled, first in the series, featuring Hoke Mosely, a detective in Miami. Hoke smokes, drinks, swears, and eats whatever he wants (teeth or no teeth), so this obviously takes place in an earlier decade. Hoke starts out investigating the death of a Hare Krishna at the International Airport, and winds up losing more things than one can count as well as connecting his investigation to a lot of odd twists and turns in the story. Humor definitely plays a part - a large part - but it was a tad to masculine for my taste.

        1 out of 5 stars PLEASE Don't Bother.......2004-08-30

This was so bad I barely got through it. I can't understand the high praise from other reviewers. This wasn't a thriller or in the least bit funny. Hoke Moseley lives in a dump hotel because he has to send his ex-wife every other paycheck and can't afford anything else. This veteran Miami cop manages to get his teeth, badge & gun stolen when he stupidly sticks his head out his hotel room door without knowing who it is and gets beat up. The whole book just reenforced what a loser he was.

4 out of 5 stars a very competent, funny and enjoyable Miami mystery novel.......2002-11-15

Miami Blues is my first Charles Willeford novel but it certainly won't be my last. I remember the film Miami Blues (with Alex Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh). I enjoyed it and hoped the novel would be at least half as good. Thankfully it was even better than the film.

In Miami Blues we have a young psychopathic criminal from California landing at Miami International Airport. All he wants is to steal enough money to live on easy street, and he will not let anything get in his way. Unfortunately bad luck and stupidity are stacked against him. Worse, he partners up with an incredibly sweet yet dumb local girl who doesn't offer value for achieving his goals ... no matter how he manipulates her. Worse still, there is a rather crusty old cop out to get him. No spoilers here, but suffice to say Miami Blues has a good ending.

The best part of Miami Blues is Willeford's excellent capturing of the "feel" of Miami. It's very much like Carl Hiaasen material without the caustic satire (..oh, I should add Miami Blues does have funny bits also). And it doesn't take itself too seriously, as if Charles Willeford wasn't planning to write fine literature but simply a good story. He succeeded very nicely.

Bottom line: a minor jewel amongst the masses of mystery novels. Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars I rarely dislike books but this one is too special.......2002-10-13

First of all I was glad that a book with such catchy title such as " Miami Blues" was out there because is hard to find fiction books locatined in Miami. I rad the reviews in the book, and the word " marvelous," but as I read on I found myself highly disgusted. The story made Cubans and Latin as same as Miami look like a dump-filled with crimminals. What got me mad was that everybody didn't shed a light to help me have a longlasting fun experience reading.I was disguted by the end since what I read before made tereading unpleasent. It'sgood the book was publish in 1984 because that Miami was not done justice. Sometimes is better to be quiet because not even the reviews seem to fit with such experience. In simple words: it Sucks!!!

Vulgar, pornographic, distasteful, has nothing to do with the election. It appears the author took a national near-tragedy and turned it into more of a farce than it was. This book does nothing to uplift the American people. We don't need "literature" like this.

                    Book Description

Besides the main author, the contributors to this Grimoire read like a "Who's Who" of modern magickians, and include such notables as Raymond Buckland, Raven Grimassi, Amber K, and Donald Michael Kraig, among others. These varying viewpoints and expertise make for a balanced presentation and, like a good school, for an ability to maintain interest levels by having changes of pace and style.

Designed as an Apprentice-level program of studies, this book is aimed at the same folks who find Harry Potter so fascinating - those young (and young at heart) people who want to be more in control of their world.

It is broken down into seven separate "Courses" - Wizardry, Nature, Practice, Rites, Spectrum Part 1, Spectrum Part 2, and Lore. It further contains a set of appendices - A History of Magick Time Line, The Wizard's Library, Credits and References, and an Index. Each of the Courses is further broken down into six or seven "classes" (a total of 45). Be prepared to put in some serious study time and effort if you want to take advantage of the material herein!

Like Hogwarts, this book is arranged and scheduled to take seven years to complete. To the younger reader, I must say that there are good reasons for this, not the least being that one needs to become proficient in the basics before moving on.

Many youngsters may be put off by the work expected of them in the early going. Where are the charms? Where are the incantations in mystic languages? Where are the rewards? Well, just like having to finish your veggies before getting dessert; just like needing to learn basic math before moving on to algebra; just like laying a foundation before building a home; you need to acquire the basic knowledge of the magickal world before getting into the "good stuff."

As you work your way through this book (and make no mistake, you will work your way through it!), you may find yourself longing for the carefree days of school. The concepts contained within are easy to read, simple to absorb, and consuming to understand. If you think "Apprentice" means easy-to-do, think again. You will find yourself being fed a diet of ideas which may well force you to alter your perception of the universe.

Oberon covers everything from creating your magickal tools to planting and caring for a garden (Anyone who doesn't see gardening as a magickal act should consider the transformation of a seed into a plant and on to your table.); from learning to survive in the woods to learning to recognize Elementals. And all of that before he even begins to address the actual practice of magick.

Course One, Class One, Lesson Three ("1.I.3: Glossary" to use Oberon's notation system) is a handy glossary of types of Wizards which covers everything from Bards and Cybermancers to Wiccans and Wizards. If there is a description of a magick worker in the English language, it is in this glossary.

Scattered throughout this book are tables of correspondences. There are a number of them, arranged in a variety of formats, and covering a wide range of topics. There are also a large number of illustrations, many of them (almost half, in fact) from the fertile mind and hands of Oberon.

When he actually begins to discuss working magick, he takes the time to explain how and why it works. He relates it to things that all teens can relate to, and puts it firmly in the realm of things which are able to be done by anyone willing to put in the time and effort.

He explains how to set up altars (both indoors and outdoors), how to construct shrines and henges, and other items as well. He includes basic instructions on a wide variety of healing techniques. He adds constant encouragement, in the form of reassurances that practice is required, and not to get discouraged if you don't get immediate results.

This book is aimed at the total spectrum of Wizardry (like Hogwarts). It does not just cover the Ceremonial aspects of magick. It covers the spectrum from invoking angels and demons to doing simple divination; from creating planetary talismans to simple remedies for acne; and from alchemy to conjury (stage magic). Reading this book will provide a thorough understanding of Wizardry. Completing the work within this book will provide a thorough mastery of the basics of Wizardry.

He divides magick into the colors of the rainbow and more: Meditation (aqua); Healing (blue); Wortcunning (green); Divination (yellow); Conjury (orange); Alchemy (red); Beast Mastery (brown); Cosmology (violet); Mathemagicks (clear); Ceremonial Magick (white); Lore Mastery (grey); and the Black Arts (black). Thus, by adopting tabards or robes of the appropriate color Wizards who follow this system will be able to immediately identify the specialty of those they encounter.

Mythology is covered extensively, as are world religious views. While some may question their inclusion in a grimoire, it is vital for the apprentice to understand all that may be encountered in the performance of magick. Because of the vast amount of energy devoted to these topics over the millennia, they have a valid existence on other planes, and the magickian must be prepared to deal with them.

As with any competent teacher, Oberon not only expects you to complete the assigned exercises, but also assigns outside reading and independent research. He lets you know early on that there will be both theory and practice involved in progressing through this work, and both are equally important. He makes every effort to balance his opinions and beliefs, which he is careful to identify as such, with the opinions and beliefs of others covering a wide spectrum.

For those with limited cash available, he lists many websites where information may be found. Even the most cash-strapped individuals can (and SHOULD) obtain a library card and avail themselves of the resources available there, in the form of internet access, books, magazines, etc.

                    5 out of 5 stars One Wizard's Journey.......2007-08-19

Oh, how I wish this book had been around in 1960.

That was the time I began my own quest, pounding against the barriers of "reality" and social convention. I was a kid, computers didn't exist, and secret trips to an inner-city library were the best I could manage. I spent years going from the usual rewrites of the Salem trials on thru the usual medieval Grimoires (arf, barf, thank you) and finally getting a breath of fresh air with Dr. LaVey's "The Satanic Bible."

I remained a follower of the Left Hand Path for some ten years, then abandoned all such stuff during a philosophical and physical life-crisis. Later on, I came to decide that I was Grey. I never cared for the fluff-bunnyism of "white witchcraft", and like others of the LHP, tended to laugh at those who feared the Dark Side of the Force. I broke my allegiances to the Dark Side for sound reasons, however, and thought I was probably the only Grey on the planet.

And then, years later, home computers became commonplace, I got dragged into the computer age kicking and screaming, and by sheer accident, came across Oberon's book.

Oberon and I had corresponded back in snail-mail days, and although we'd been on "opposite ends" we found that we got on quite well. I understand that a number of Left-Hand folks are seriously angry about his comments regarding Satanists and others, finding them to be "untrustworthy." All the Satanists I knew (and I used to know a great many, in Detroit and around the country) were almost Klingon-like in their concern for personal honor. The new breed that makes it up as they go along, depending on how many videos they've seen on Empty-Vee, well, I suspect that lot would give me pause. So, I understand where both sides of that argument are coming from.

But the Grimoire is not about Right vs Left, Darkness vs Light. It is about recognizing all those various aspects of Life, and about Learning. Curiously, it is not about pushing "religion" of any sort; it offers to respect all, and quotes from a wide variety of them. When it comes to Basic Magickal Principles (emphasis mine,) there is no better source. Ditto, in regard to Magickal tools and accoutrements. I spent decades trying to put sources like this all together for myself.

So, no matter what one's personal path may be, I think you'll find this book, and its Companion volume, to be of inestimable value. If you're a young person fresh out of the movie theatre, looking for a magickal school that exists in the "real" world, you need at last look no further.

Your own journey should be considerably easier than mine was, thanks to the efforts of Prof. Ravenheart and his associates -- and I am now proud to count myself among them.

5 out of 5 stars Best Basic Guideline Book for New Students of Modern Wizardry & Witchcraft.......2007-08-18

This guidebook for aspiring wizard apprentices is quite good.Oberon Ravenheart once stated that there needs to be some academic structure for the path towards the earned title of "Master Wizard".It seems some followers of Wicca were showing off their toliet-paper credentials they had aquired from dubious hucksters. The way i see it,is that some academic wizard workshops are more respected than others. The test of time reveals the soundness of one's learning experience from a particular pagan scholar. This is not a dry gothic academic grimoire, yet an entertaining primer to get curious seekers aquainted with the pagan scene. There are excellent drawings throughtout.Ravenheart ,and his wife Morning Glory, also have an excellent video available, entitled 'Sharing Waters'.It's distributed by the 'School of Wicca', established by Gavin Frost and his wife Yvonne. Some readers may find this book to be too elementary and puerile however.

This is a great book for young and old alike. Master Ravenheart puts his heart and soul into sharing his knowledge in an easily read and understood manner. The information is well laid out and well organized.

5 out of 5 stars Grimoire For The Apprentice Wizard.......2007-01-08

This is the book that I use to teach with. The Grey Council that helped put this book together is like the cream of the whole Magick crop, and with all types of Magick included, everyone would do well to use and study this book. Witches, Wizards, Druids, Shamans, all put this book together. The best thing about it is that it is non-denominational, almost non-religious. If more books would take religion out of life, it would be best for all.

It's as simple as that. Here is what people want in their campaign -- more magic, more Virtues and Flaws, more background on bein a mage, the centerpoint of any saga. If you are only going to pick up one supplement, make it this one. Hands down it will give you more bang-for-the-buck than any other two supplements.

Combining a thorough explanation of nutritional supplements with healthy food recommendations, Feed Your Genes Right is a straightforward guide to healing modern illnesses--sometimes even before they strike. Author Jack Challem (Syndrome X) does a fine job with presenting complex health information in simple terms, and the mix of research, individual stories and personal touches result in a book as informative as most textbooks while being far more readable.

Supplements are accessible in two separate ways (in addition to an excellent index): by the supplement name, and by disease. One section explains each supplement in fine detail, including how they are available and what conditions particularly benefit from them; a later section lists medical conditions alphabetically--including everything from sickle cell anemia to wrinkles to cancer--and suggests dietary and supplemental recommendations, including specific reference to the research that makes the recommendation.

Many of the diet-related advice will sound familiar: there is nothing too earth-shattering about eating nutritionally-dense foods along plenty of water, fruit and vegetables, and getting a good mix of lean proteins and healthy fats. Challem makes a clear case for eating organically when possible, and also avoiding trans fats, referencing a number of studies that zoom in on specific nutrient loss or potential cancer-causing agents. A short recipe section provides new inspiration for following these guidelines, with interesting options like roasted carrots and black rice pudding with coconut milk.

While probably of more use to those looking to prevent chronic health issues rather than to cure acute illness, the book offers fine assistance to anyone investigating the use of supplements past the addition of a one-a-day tablet. --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars A Feast for Sore Genes.......2005-03-23

This latest work by veteran health writer Jack Challem is a clear, easy-to-read entree to the world of nutrigenetics--optimizing genetic performance through nutrition. Nearly all of us can benefit from learning how our food choices influence our genes, and thereby every aspect of our body functions. There is plenty of good advice in this book, backed up with some healthful recipes, for getting the most out of the genes you were born with. The author does not overlook the detrimental effects of cultural influences, such as the shift in fatty-acids ratios in the modern diet, among others. Although this book speaks to everyone, those with certain problems (like too much homocysteine in the blood) may find answers especially for themselves.
