Readers expecting something zany, something crudely humorous from Steve Martin's second novel, The Pleasure of My Company, will discover much greater riches. While the book has a sense of humor, Martin moves everywhere with a gentler, lighter touch in this elegant little fiction that verges on the profound and poetic.

Daniel Pecan Cambridge is the narrator and central consciousness of the novel (actually a novella). Daniel, an ex-Hewlett-Packard communiqué encoder, is a savant whose closely proscribed world is bounded on every side by neuroses and obsessions. He cannot cross the street except at driveways symmetrically opposed to each, and he cannot sleep unless the wattage of the active light bulbs in his apartment sums to 1,125. Daniel's starved social life is punctuated by twice-weekly visits from a young therapist in training, Clarissa; by his prescription pick-ups from a Rite Aid pharmacist, Zandy; and by his "casual" meetings with the bleach-blond real estate agent, Elizabeth, who is struggling to sell apartments across the street. But Daniel's dysfunctional routines are shattered one day when he becomes entangled in the chaos of Clarissa's life as a single mother. Taking care of Clarissa's tiny son, Teddy, Daniel begins to emerge from the safety of logic, magic squares, and obsessive counting.

Martin's craftsmanship is remarkable. The tightly packed novella paints rich portraits with restraint and balance, including nothing extraneous to Daniel's world. The book does not try for pyrotechnics but is contented with a Zen-like simplicity in both prose and plot. Avoiding the crushing bleakness of much contemporary fiction, Martin insists through Daniel--a man haunted by horrors of his own making--that there is possibility for compassion, that broken lives can actually be healed. --Patrick O'Kelley

Daniel Pecan Cambridge, 30, 35, 38 or 27, depending on how he feels that day, is a young man whose life is rich and full, provided he never leaves his Santa Monica apartment. After all, outside there are 8 inch high curbs and there's always the horrible chance he might see a gas station attendant wearing a blue hat. So, except for the occasional trip to the Rite Aid to admire the California girl Zandy and to buy ear plugs because they're on sale, he stays home a lot. And a good thing too, or he would have never been falsely implicated in a murder, never almost seduced Philipa, never done the impossible task of jogging around the block with Brian, never ironed his pillows, and might never have won the Most Average American contest

5 out of 5 stars Martin's Writing Encapsulates Comedic Compassion.......2007-09-13

We all know Steve Martin as a funny, witty actor and comedian, but I am afraid too few people know what a talented writer he is. Martin has a wonderful writing style, in which he transfers his comedic voice to the written page. This wonderful novella tops "Shopgirl" (another example of his brilliant writing talent) in its originality and compassion. It's funny and fresh and enchanting, and those are not qualities easily achieved in a novel.

"The Pleasure of My Company" centers on Daniel Cambridge, a man who is afraid to leave his house, except for his angst-ridden outings to the local drugstore, which he does carefully, one hilarious step at a time. Just crossing the street can be a challenge for our hero Cambridge; his life is full of obsessions and neuroses. Despite its humor, this is a tender tale, a portrait of loneliness, and one man's attempt to engage to world around him despite his psychological limitations (by babysitting, by winning an essay contest, and by attempting to get the girl of his dreams). His quest is compelling and sincere, even when you are laughing out loud.

The book is so good you will find yourself slowing down to make the story last, and when you finish, you will find yourself wishing for more. I only hope that Martin commits this novella to film in the way he did with "Shopgirl." Martin is a wonderful writer, whose talent and insight into the humor and humanity of life are unparalleled. This is a wonderful book, but oh too short. Let's hope Martin continues to write many more.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2007-06-16

Once again our know-nothing publishers in the UK, terrified that no one will buy a book unless it's got "laugh-out-loud funny" plastered on the cover, have done us a tremendous disservice. They did it last year with George Hagen's masterpiece 'The Laments' and now they've done it to Steve Martin's sublime and touching novel.

Martin's mastery of his craft sends him without doubt into the top league of American novelists. 'Shopgirl' was good and brave but this trancsends even that wonderful book. The sure-footedness and tenderness that Martin displays towards Daniel, the novel's main protagonist, is doubled and then squared (how Daniel would love that) when each of the other characters are brought so deftly into his life.

Coming to the end of this book, in which the author summons up every ounce of grace and poignancy to his writing, I was reminded of 'The Time Traveller's Wife'. For like that book Steve Martin's inspiring novel resonates in the mind long after the cover has been closed. Quite unashamedly I admit here to having read the last paragraph four times.

And yes, this book may be funny but in a wry and almost sad way - something much harder to pull off than a collection of gags.

Steve Martin is a deep and wonderful writer. Read this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not Martin's Best.......2007-06-03

I get the feeling when reading this book that Martin was distracted. Perhaps he had to write this to fullfill some contractural obligation. Or maybe hwe was rushing tog et to anther project.

Regardless of the reason this is far from Martin's best. If you want his best read Shopgirl. Shopgirl: A Novella

If you want to see a largely unedited Steve Martin read "The Pleasure of my Company."

5 out of 5 stars The Pleasure of My Company.......2007-02-10

I stumbled upon this book while browsing Barnes & Nobles. I read part of the inside jacket and decided this was the book. Daniel Pecan Cambridge just like myself finds himself living with oddities or quirks that no one would truley understand. I suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder and I found comfort while reading this book. It took me to a place where my rituals were not my main concern. I think that this novel is brilliant and I am deeply sadden that I do not have it anymore to come back to now that I have finished. I am now just waiting patiently for the next novel by Steve Martin, which I hope comes along soon because I think he is a genious and has now become one of favorite authors.

Anyone out there who thinks that their life has an abundance of chaos should seriously take the time to read this book and take a relief from the chaos. While reading this you will come to notice that a smile and light heart has taken over.

2 out of 5 stars I feel like a traitor..........2007-01-02

I tried to read this, but it didn't grab me. But since Steve MArtin is one of my favorite actors/comedians, I thought that maybe listening to the audio book, read by the author would do the trick. I listened to 3 our of 4 CDs, which is more than I'd read. Try as I might, I just found Daniel's neuroses and compulsive behaviors more disturbing than funny. Forgive me, Steve MArtin. May I be a fan of your theatre, and not your books?

Book Description

A charity dog show has Jessica hitting the road with her faithful one-eyed Dalmatian, Lou, and her tailless Westie, Max, for the palatial summer estates of Long Island's fabled East End. When she arrives, the posh seaside community is crawling with stars eager to take best in show for their beloved pooches. But it's murder most tacky when a celebrity photographer is felled by a giant ice sculpture at a $500-a-plate fund-raiser.

Unable to resis the scent of the hunt, Jess is soon investigating a casting director's dream of potential suspects. But if Jess isn't careful, she just might become the next victim of a killer determined to prove she's barking up the wrong tree.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought the entire series.......2007-09-18

I enjoyed the first in this series 'Dead Canaries don't Sing', so bought the rest of the series anticipating several good reads. But the second was so poorly written, I gave all of the books to Goodwill.
In the first book, Jessica gets involved in a murder where the body is discovered on her clients land. She at least knew the people who owned the land and it took place in her neighborhood. In the second, she gets involved in a murder of a photographer at a party she is attending. That is my problem with this book. She has absolutely no ties to anything involved with this murder except being at the same party, but she is showing up at homes where she knows none of the people, sneaking on to property, tracking down people she does not know to ask questions, and the entire time, treating her so-called boyfriend like crap. She lies to him, misses dates, and there are references to her fear of committment, but that is never explained. About half way through, I had had enough of Jessica running all over the place being a pest and making very little sense doing it.
Maybe if the author would have kept Jessica close to home and developed her character and ties to her community better, I would have found her more likeable. And what the heck is the deal with the committment thing?

2 out of 5 stars Fire the Editor!.......2007-05-11

I was driven to distraction by all of the punctuation errors and repetitive phrasing ("Of course" seems to be featured several times on every page). Was Ms. Baxter's editor asleep?

As was noted in an earlier review, we're supposed to believe that within a day of the murder Dr. Popper, a stranger to the Bromptons, is being welcomed into the homes (and secrets) of the rich and famous? Uh huh.

For someone who was supposed to be spending a week manning a dog show booth, Dr. Popper seemed to leave most of the work to her 12-year-old assistant, Emily. Then again, this is the same character prone to leaving her canines in the van on hot summer days. I wasn't comforted by the fact that windows were cracked and water was available - within 10 minutes, those would have been some hot dogs. Gee, maybe that will be the title of an upcoming book, with Dr. Popper being investigated by the SPCA.

Too many unbelievable plot points made this a painful read. Two stars 'cuz I like doggies.

3 out of 5 stars Doggone Fun Summer Reading.......2006-08-12

This paperback addition to the Baxter Reigning Cats & Dogs series takes a peak into the world of the rich, famous & beautiful of Long Island, NY . Readers follow traveling vet, Jessica Popper, DVM, to solve the "murder-by-ice-sculpture" of a hated papparazi where, as in true form, there is more below the surface to be illuminated by her investigation. Jessie & her two rescue dogs move among the north shore's beautiful people treating their pets' maladys & uncovering clues to the famous, local photographer's death that police have tagged a mere accident. A charity dog show serves as the backdrop for a story filled with twists of deceit, romance & suspense. What it lacks in actual dog show authenticity it makes up for in charm. Definitely a good summer read.

2 out of 5 stars Annoying.......2006-06-13

I liked Cynthia Baxter's first book because the characters were interesting and different from most of the "cozy" characters. This book, however, just annoyed me. There's absolutely no growth in the characters...Jessica is still non-commital and nosy, Nick still hangs on waiting for her to grow up. The idea that someone is just "interested in murders" is ridiculous. Jessica has absolutely no connection to the murdered man and only the most tenuous of relationships with the dog allegedly responsible for the accident that caused his death.

And then there's the setting. Ms. Baxter is supposedly a native of Long Island. Yet she repeatedly says the Norfolk police are in charge of crimes in the "East End." That would be Suffolk county, not Norfolk county. And why make up the "Bromptons?" Just call it the "Hamptons" and be done with it. Spend a weekend out there researching the street names and the types of restaurants, shops, etc and then make it real. You don't need to use people's names to make something realistic.

Plus, people who guard their privacy don't let total strangers hang around them and ask prying questions, even if that person is a vet. People who love their animals as much as the characters in this book have a great deal of loyalty to the vet who cares for them. They certainly aren't apt to just open right up to a new one. Just because someone likes animals, doesn't make them automatically trust someone else who likes animals.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother checking your shoes--it's the book that stinks..........2005-10-12

Dr. Popper, chipper veterinarian turned sleuth, has been coerced by an associate into giving advice at an ASPCA fundraising event in the Bromptons, Long Island's paradise for wealthy whatnots. When she stops to ask directions to the event she gets splashed with mud by a handsome actor in a sportscar, only to find that she is staying at his guesthouse during the event (whoddathunk?). Meeting cute, the two find themselves semi-attracted. This becomes problematic since Jessica's b.friend is supposed to join her for her stay. At the opening night of the fundraiser, a much despised papparazzo is killed by a giant ice sculpture. Jessica takes the matter into her own hands and what ensues is a week's worth of dull sleuthing antics. Accompanied by her two pooches Max and Lou, Jessica meets actors, famous locals, and is soon hobnobbing in a very casual fashion. Meanwhile she must fend off the advances of Shawn Elliot, the actor whose house she's staying at, and trying to placate her easily irritated and mostly whiny boyfriend Nick.

God, what an awful book. I would have set this book down if I weren't so compulsive--I kept wondering how the heck Cynthia Baxter was going to make her plot believable. Bad move. Putting on the Dog isn't funny or entertaining enough to warrant 368 pages. It's most clever points are in the punny title and synopsis on the back cover. Several editing errors only made the going more painful. Jessica Popper, DVM, is a supposed dog expert, yet early in the book makes a comment about Schipperkes being the basis for the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood. Uh, like, Dr. Popper, Schipperkes are all black, about a foot high and very cute/fuzzy. OK, I give on the ears. Wolves and Schipperkes both have pointy ears. Four legs, too. This was followed by a comment about a white Abyssinian basking in the sun. Really? Abyssinians are sandy brown with almost mountain cat markings. And they breed true to type. So, I'm being a twit pointing these mistakes out, but I can't help but think that if you are going to write a book about an expert, then you ought to know the expert's subject or find someone who does and will edit accordingly. And don't even get me started on Jessica's love interests... Nick is whiny, deluded, and boring, yet the Jessica and the author both keep commenting on what a great guy he is. Too bad no one bothers writing something that illustrates this. Shawn Elliot's actions are attentive, kind, and thoughtful, albeit a tiny bit shallow, yet Jessica keeps acting as though he's a major moral threat. And I know this is just supposed to be a cute book yadayada, but is it really believable that the first movie actor she meets falls in love with her? How about his personal assistant or something?

If your thing happens to be animal-mysteries, and you are somewhat logical, then I say skip this one or wait until Ms. Baxter gets a better editor and research assistant.

        5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!.......2000-12-26

I am an avid dog lover and own probably most of the books written about dogs - Putting on the Dog is by far my favorite. The photographs in this book go way beyond being just nice pictures; they really speak a deep emotional language, touching the heart in a way that very few people are able to do in print. If you have ever loved a dog, no matter what the breed, you should do yourself a favor and buy this book. Each photo is a treasure filled with love and humor and sharing and the kind of wisdom of which only dogs are capable. A work such as this is a rarity which comes along only once in a great while. It captures a purity of spirit which is near impossible to translate into mere words. Putting on the Dog speaks directly to your heart. If you have ever truly loved a dog you will leaf through the pages and find yourself sometimes chuckling at long forgotten memories, sometimes laughing out loud in spite of yourself, sometimes reaching for the nearest box of tissues then, finally, closing the cover knowing that you will return again and again. Putting on the Dog is a treasure!

4 out of 5 stars Pierrette, it's time to save the world...again........2003-04-07

The thought-provoking "Sorceress's Tale" series concludes, as far as I know, with this book. The sorceress Pierrette, seventeen years old in body and ancient in spirit, still dreams of the day when she will finally meet her dream-lover, Minho of the Fortunate Isles, and become his queen. But the goddess Ma throws a wrench in her plans when she insists that Pierrette must kill Minho and destroy the Fortunate Isles. Pierrette is heartbroken, and doesn't know why this must be.

Soon after, she is reunited with the scientist ibn Saul and his apprentice Lovi, still beautiful, still conflicted about his sexuality. Ibn Saul is also on a mission to find the Fortunate Isles. Pierrette now believes she understands Ma's demand--if ibn Saul finds the Isles, he may rationalize them into something wholly mundane. And so maybe she has to destroy them before ibn Saul can ruin them. Hoping she can find a less extreme solution than the Lady's, Pierrette joins them on their journey.

From here, the story goes fairly slowly for a while, bogged down in travel minutiae. But hints begin to appear that something is terribly wrong somewhere--that the balance of good and evil in the world is messed up yet again, threatening to unleash the terrible Black Time.

The plot picks up when Pierrette actually reaches the Fortunate Isles. What sort of place is this, and what sort of man is Minho? And how is Minho's utopia connected with the Black Time? Once Pierrette is in Minho's kingdom, _The Isle Beyond Time_ becomes quite exciting, recalling both the thoughtfulness of _The Sacred Pool_ and the action of _The Veil of Years_. I won't say anything more, since I don't want to spoil the plot twists for you.

This is an interesting end to the trilogy. I wonder what Pierrette will do with the rest of her life--after all, she is quite young in physical years.

5 out of 5 stars People helping people........2007-08-24

Catherine brings the human aspect of IC to the reader, as she has lived this painful illness. Her tenacity to overcome is remarkable. Catherine's story is written from the hand of expertise, as she has had to fight for an answer to her pain and suffering. Catherine's story is one of courage and filled with hope for others who suffer from IC.

                  5 out of 5 stars Awakening.......2006-08-06

As her other two wonderful books, this one also offers you with hope. She writes about how the mind, body, and spirit are connected and how she came to understand how she "drew" IC to her and how she used it to help her heal the rest of the way. I find this book to be comforting and inspirational and greatly recommend it. Once again, thank you Cath for the hope you give us!

                  4 out of 5 stars Very interesting........2005-09-23

By revealing some of the mystery behind the spirit, mind, body connection (based on her own experiences), the author makes the point that healing from IC involves more than just healing the body. There is much to think about in this book, and it may trigger some healthy self-reflection. For those who believe in God, the references to "God/the Universe" may be unsettling, and are probably made to appeal to a wider audience. But the principles mentioned are universal in nature.

                  5 out of 5 stars She's still doing well!.......2005-09-09

This is Catherine Simone's third book describing her battle with Interstitial Cystitis. In this one, she lets her readers know that she is still doing great but addresses spiritual, emotional, and mental issues that can attribute to/stem from the disease. Many people who have recovered are finding that although the physical symptoms are gone, the fear, anxiety, etc., tend to linger. This book perfectly complements her other two, bringing her work full circle. I am so thankful for this book...an excellent resource for every IC patient.

5 out of 5 stars There is Hope and From A Different Point of View.......2004-11-17

Being diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis and feeling completely alone in a world where no one understands your pain, grief, and fear Catherine Simone provides hope and friendship through her writing. In her third book Awakening Through The Tears she leads you through her story of how she "healed the rest of the way". Unlike in her first two books Simone goes into great detail regarding the mind/body/spirit relationship to IC and the hormone connection, both of which led to her healing. Due to Simone's honesty and desire for IC sufferers to learn from her experience, I feel as if so many of the "mysteries" of my body have been revealed to me. This book has also provided my husband, friends, and family with a vivid picture of what it is like to live through IC. With all that I have learned from Awakening Through The Tears, I now have hope that I too will be "healed the rest of the way" with my Interstitial Cystitis.

Catherine Simone's book, Awakening Through The Tears, is one that should not only be read by those who suffer from Interstitial Cystitis, but also by their family members. I am one of those "family members". My wife has been struggling with IC for the past year and we have felt as if we are totally alone. Nobody seemed to understand what it is like to live each day with IC. Simone's third book completes her series and certainly offers hope for those who have Interstitial Cystitis and to their family members. This book is a must for anyone who has IC or who knows someone who is suffering through this disease.
