On the Isle of Sampetra, Emperor Ubla, better known as Mad Eyes, sends his lizard army on a mission to capture Redwall. Meanwhile the inhabitants of Redwall are on a mission of their own--to solve the six fiendishly difficult riddles that will lead them to the rose-colored gems, the Pearls of Lutra. As they get closer to solving to riddles, the lizards get closer to Redwall and a battle to the death begins.

One of the excellent fantasy adventure series about the mystical Redwall, Pearls of Lutra is a magical, mind-blowing adventure that never disappoints. Brian Jacques expertly weaves his web of intrigue through the pages, capturing the imagination with a stroke of a pen as if he were a wizard with a wand. Challenging, colorful, and, most importantly, readable to the point of addiction, The Pearls of Lutra is an absolute must. --Susan Harrison

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL! AWFUL! AWFUL!.......2007-09-28

I don't understand how this book got so many good reviews! It was awful! Let me list the things that I hate about this book.
.No battle at the end
.No armies
.Stupid puzzles
.I actualy felt sorry for the bad guy, he just got tricked and creamed so many times, he's hardly a threat to the good guys! He keeps getting crushed by these pirates, his army betrays him to the pirates, and the 5 good guys show up in the end and totally destroy the rest of the bad guys army, the pirate's ship, and the bad guy himself! It was pitiful! In all, this book was terrible, I only gave it one star because it had a cool swordfight in the end. Skip this book! Read the other Redwall books though, they're good {except for Loamhedge, it's bad too}.

5 out of 5 stars The Tales of Pearls of Lutra.......2006-12-15

This book is about a young hedgehog growing up to be an adult. When he grows up his father gives him a quest to become a warrior. His quest enables him to find out that he's a prince. This book is a real good book if you like action books. I enjoyed the adventures and war topics found in this book. Enjoy reading this book because you'll enjoy the read.

Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.

In the 9th book in the beloved Redwall series, we find the good creatures of Redwall Abbey threatened by the corsair and lizard army come from the Isle of Sampetra and Emperor Ublaz to claim the fabeled Pearls of Lutra. As the plot progresses, we find Martin, son of Mattithias the warrior, on a quest to save Abbot Durral from the corsairs. We also find young Tansy the hedgehog directing a dedicated team of Abbeybeasts in trying to crack a riddle left by Old Crickulus with the reward being the 7 Pearls of Lutra.

5 out of 5 stars A Thriller for Young and Old.......2005-10-21

In this book I liked how Brian Jacques, the author of the Redwall series, painted a picture of each character. I also liked how he mixed action with comedy and adventure. I didn't like how most of the characters from the Matthias and Mattimeo era have died. In The Pearls of Lutra this is everybody except for Rollo bankvole and Auma, the daughter of Orlando the Axe (who might be still alive). I also didn't like the part when Saint Ninian's, the former home of Gonff the mousethief, was burnt. In The Pearls of Lutra some of the main characters are otters. They are my favorite creatures in the Redwall series. This book gives a better perspective of their lives such as the otters' fighting skills, character, and even their dietary supplements. Overall, this was good work on the behalf of Brian Jacques. This is one of my favorite Redwall books. I give this book five stars.

                    Book Description

Free-spirited and freshly divorced, fifty-year-old Anne Johnson is living the good life. She spends her days in her luxurious, elegant apartment in Washington, D.C., cuddled up with a book in one hand and a martini in the other. Then, she hears a voice in her head, warning that there'll be a murder in her building in thirty days-and she must prevent it. Anne confides in Mary, the building's large-and-in-charge cleaning woman, and together, they plan a party to ferret out the would-be killer. But if they don't act quickly, the swanky soiree might end up being a goodbye party for both of them.

4 out of 5 stars Mystery Turns My Head.......2005-11-03

The day begins for Anne Johnson like most do in her new single life. She has a brand new apartment and nothing to worry about, except her new sex drive. But then she hears a voice. A murder will occur in thirty days. Prevent it. With further prodding, it repeats itself. In the Kennedy apartment building. Thirty days. Prevent it. Anne Johnson does not know where to start. She knows few people from the huge building and has no friends to confide it. Usually she enjoys herself and is never lonely, though she wishes for a confidante. She meets Mary, the resident cleaning lady and they begin on a wild friendship as they try to prevent a murder.

Mary believes the only way to meet members of the building is to give a party. So that is what the new friends decide to do. Mary's husband comes along to look for suspicious people. Anne invites her ex husband and both of her children. The party is a success, but the friends are no closer to solving the mystery. But neither really feel like they must rush. Mary has her own worries while Anne wonders about the god like Russian who adores her. Will they solve the mystery before it is too late?

My Very Own Murder kept me reading. Readers, maybe not even mystery readers, will be brought into this storyline. Anne will be like a lost friend who you want to give advice. Stay away from the Russian. Solve the mystery. Why are you worrying about little things? If all mysteries kept readers interested, I would be a big time fan!

                    4 out of 5 stars As crisp as a well-chilled martini.......2005-10-11

Anne Johnson, a mid-century thoroughly modern divorcee, lives a life to which many women secretly aspire. She is independently wealthy, has two well-adjusted adult children and lives in a ritzy high-rise downtown Washington D.C. apartment worthy of Architectural Digest. Although she spends her days experimenting with new recipes, napping, sipping martinis, cleaning her extremely tidy apartment and wafting about in her favorite white gown while thinking about sex, she tells herself and her family that she's not bored, that her life is absolutely perfect, just as it is.

Then one day she hears a voice in her head, a voice that tells her that a murder will be committed in her apartment building within 30 days. The voice also says that she has the power to prevent this murder.

Anne confesses this unusual event to Mary, a stout, ebullient African-American woman who works in the building as a cleaning woman. She doesn't clean Anne's apartment since Anne loves to clean, (a passion that I cannot begin to understand) but her position does give her access to and knowledge of many of the residents. Anne and Mary each decide that one of the top candidates for murderer of the month is a suave, handsome thirty-ish Russian gentleman. Mary's investigative techniques involve eavesdropping and observation; Anne follows her overactive libido and decides to sleep with him.

I vicariously enjoyed the many martinis imbibed throughout the novel, as this is my Friday end-of-workweek drink of choice. But my absolute favorite part was the secret passage, a device rarely used in an adult book. It took me back to my pre-teen years when I passionately read dozens of "girl running away from castle" books.

If you are looking for light entertainment and you aren't wedded to a particular genre preference (I couldn't quite figure out whether this book was a romance with a dash of mystery or a mystery with frivolous flings), pick up a copy of My Very Own Murder. To enrich your overall experience, I suggest you dress in your most comfy "I feel good about me" outfit and apply a chilled martini on your lips.

5 out of 5 stars delightful spicy mystery, well written...........2005-09-30

Anne Johnson is fifty years old, recently divorced from a faithless husband, and not suffering in the slightest from that loss. At age fifty, Carr's heroine is still feisty and fit. She lives in a spacious luxury apartment in Washington D.C. and enjoys her quiet time curled up reading by the fireplace. Life is fine just the way it is. She's quite comfortable with her current situation except for missing sex and hopes her hunky neighbor, Ivan Chernislava, might rectify that shortfall.

One night while sipping a martini, a voice comes to Anne out of nowhere. "A murder will occur in sixty days. Prevent it." Anne wonders if that disembodied voice is due to one too many martinis, or if she's finally fallen into schizophrenia but decides preventing a murder might be entertaining for awhile at least. She enlists the help of Mary, a savvy Rubenesque cleaning lady, to help find the potential murderer. Their list of suspects includes the sexually robust Ivan, whom Anne lustily "investigates" as often as her strength allows. She and Mary plan a cocktail party for residents of her apartment complex, in hopes of uncovering the murderer, dragging Anne's ex-husband, children, and Mary's husband into their scheme. The results are often hilarious but just as frequently hair raising as these two friends track down a killer.

5 out of 5 stars Fun book with quirky characters.......2005-09-23

Ms. Carr has written a very funny, entertaining book with very quirky and likeable characters. The back of the book description said that the main character, Anne, likes to "cuddle up beside the fireplace with a good book in one hand and a perfect martini in the other." This sounded like someone I wanted to read more about, so I bought the book, and I am glad that I did.

The story takes place in Washington, DC-my favorite city. Anne is a divorced lady who hears a voice saying that there will be a murder in her apartment building in thirty days. She befriends a very amiable woman, Mary, who cleans apartments in the building, and together they plan a party to try to find out who the possible murderer is. There are many twists and turns which will keep the reader guessing.

I enjoyed this book because it has everything-humor, suspense and romance. I also love the fact that it is set in Washington, DC and the author uses real locations (restaurants, etc.) throughout the city. You do not need to be familiar with Washington, DC to enjoy "My Very Own Murder". This book will appeal to anyone who wants a fun, entertaining story with unique characters.

I am looking forward to reading "The Dewey Decimal System of Love", also by Ms. Carr. She kept me very entertained on my commute to and from work, and up late at night with "My Very Own Murder." I am anxiously awaiting more from this very talented author.

4 out of 5 stars lighthearted serio-comic amateur sleuth .......2005-09-07

When Anne Johnson discovered her husband was cheating, she divorced him but unlike most women who catch their spouse cheating, she is content because she was never happy in her marriage. She moves into the prestigious Kennedy apartment building and she misses neither her husband nor her children as she revels in being alone and being able to decide what she wants to do.

The fifty year old divorcee is shaken to hear a voice in her head saying that a murder will occur in the Kennedy in thirty days and she must prevent it from happening. Not knowing what to think, she goes to the laundry room where she meets Mary, a cleaning woman for many of the apartments in the building. She confides about what the voice says to Mary who doesn't believe Anne is crazy. Together they cook up a scheme where Anne has a housewarming party so that they can look for potential murder suspects and victims. What follows is a friendship that involves a whacky investigation that leads to the criminals who want to silence Anne before she finds out their secret.

This is a lighthearted serio-comic amateur sleuth mystery based on a voice in the protagonist's head. The heroine is a delightfully quirky individual who marches to her own drummer and her friendship with the cleaning lady is instant. The mystery of who is behind the suspected crime comes very late in the book but readers won't feel any disappointment because the author is, without being obvious, sprinkling clues that leads to the killer throughout the tale. This is a very special, unique and exciting mystery featuring characters that are razor sharp and diabolically clever.

Allies ride to his aid, but even if he survives a madman's deadly sorceries and the precarious attentions of an omnipotent dragon, still greater evils await him on his dangerous quest.

                    4 out of 5 stars good book.......2006-01-04

it was a good book but seemed a to be missing something from from the first volume..

3 out of 5 stars two fantasy books in one volume [no spoilers].......2005-12-20

"The Book of Years Volume #2", combining two stories "The Dragon Lord" and "The War Lord" (formerly "The Warlord's Domain") by Peter Morwood. Rather confusing developments manipulate both heroes and creatures in a poorly edited text filled with misspellings.

The menacing world has become more vicious (with disturbing images of cruelty) as "The Dragon Lord" resumes the adventure of Aldric Talvalin approximately three months following "The Demon Lord" account in "The Book of Years Volume #1". Characters and events significantly shape Aldric's moral growth and emotional maturity while at times questionable behavior reminds how he is utterly alone clan wise and with few real friends. I found Gemmel Errekren's unusual background displeasing. The feature moments are the magnificent firedrake encounters, capturing the intellect and supremacy of the legendary creature. Overall a pleasant if slightly lengthy read.

"The War Lord" concludes the dark saga of Aldric Talvalin approximately two months after his earlier adventure. New antagonists are more horrible than found in the former stories. Even though Voord Ebanesj evokes vast evil and has an intriguing transformation, unpleasant events have changed my recommending the series to children. Character interaction is not as charming as the past stories and the sudden conclusion is exceedingly unsatisfactory.

Military and political figures play essential roles however the political drama asserts minimal activity. A detailed map of the significant terrains and comprehensive appendix would have been useful.

I highly recommend the beginning of the series to any fan of the fantasy genre, though not this volume.

                    Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars The Book of Years, Volume Two (Book of Years).......2005-08-15

You learn more about the characters in this book. Overall it was a good book, not as good as the first omnibus, but still a worthwhile read.

The One Year Book of Family Devotions offers a full year's worth of delightful stories and relevant Bible passages to boost your family's devotion time. Since the Scripture verses--taken from the eminently readable New Living Translation--are printed alongside the stories, this book is all you'll need. It also includes a "How about You?" section to personalize each lesson, a Scripture memory verse, and a handy two- to five-word summary of the day's message. Families with children ages 6-10 will enjoy the updated look of the first two volumes of this classic devotional book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for family time and sharing Christ with kids.......1999-07-23

This is one of the most awesome devotional books I have ever encountered. Its easy to read style makes it great for children to read to adults. The stories are simple and every child can see themselves in the stories. The content covers everything from prayer, to dealing with friends, to bringing friends to Christ. I strongly urge every Christian parent to share this book with their child.

Anyone who's tried booking a hotel room, talking with their child's teacher, or buying a new car knows that encounters that used to be simple now feel like micro-excursions to a foreign country. Now a proven master of the popular reference book gives readers a passport to those daily encounters. Each chapter is a crash course in the culture of a specific field, its buzz-words, its policies, and the attitudes of its insiders. Here are the “magic words” that unlock information and secure cooperation—and the “absolute no- no's” that guarantee nothing but grief. The insights come directly from the pros, and their advice is both entertaining and unnervingly candid. A combination of Home Comforts and Getting to Yes, Say the Magic Words is an indispensable resource.

Includes information on: attorneys, car dealers, doctors, hairstylists, hotel reservation agents, landlords, nannies, mechanics, real estate brokers, therapists, teachers, and many more

3 out of 5 stars Use These Magic Words To Succeed........2006-01-18

This "magic words" book shows how to successfully deal with busy professionals not so much by the words we use but the way we say them. The eighteen occupations this author chose to investigate are essential to most families.

Some are necessary to parents of younger children, like nannies, teachers, pediatricians; for couples just starting out, she covers realtors, contractors, landlords. Even the adult children of elderly parents with information they should know, the needed advise on choosing nursing home and funeral directors -- which go together -- are a priority. She tells some of the things to ask and how to supervise (what to do, what not to do). "One of the most stressful aspects of placing a relative in a nursing home is the unwelcome glimpse it offers into your own possible future." She gives alternatives such as adult family homes (my sister did this for a while some years ago in Maryland), a private residence licensed to provide care for two to six individuals; it adds the personal touch as opposed to the "demoralization of institutional life." Even though "nursing homes are the second most heavily regulated industry in America (the nuclear power industry is first)," there are no guarantees. From personal experience, I'd advise it only as a last resort.

For those who own cars, she has pointers on dealing with auto mechanics and car salesmen. When dealing with local politicians, such as city council membres or even the mayor, there is a sample letter detailing how to get the best results, "with carbon copies sent to the Mayor, a local t.v. station news producer, and the editor of the local newspaper." City council members can accomplish many things, but they must work within certain limits; "prepare by clarifying what you want done."

If you need the services of a lawyer, "you will know that [by] asking why he got into law will make you one of his favorite clients." She gives pointers on hairdressers, so essential to a woman's appearance and self-confidence, and the tipping process, when it is alright not to tip.

People like doctors and therapists we all need at different stages in our lives so that they will do what they are trained to make our healthcare (physical and mental) tolerable. Some magic words to use: "Be 'concerned' instead of 'scared.' Be 'apprehensive' instead of a 'nervous wreck.' In everyday life, we tend to exaggerate to get results, but with doctors have to go to the opposite extreme. Even if you are 'in agony,' try not to use those words. Instead say, "I have a lot of discomfort."

If something about you gives these professionals the impression that you will make them fail, they will be less than likely to help you. "If they sense that they will succeed with you, they will go out of their way to return your calls, honor their agreements." This book will show you how to give them the impresssion that they will succeed. Lynette Padwa has also written EVERYTHING YOU PRETEND TO KNOW AND ARE AFRAID SOMEONE WILL ASK.

5 out of 5 stars Like reading the other person's playbook!.......2006-01-10

The author gets it right in the very first paragraph: The REAL Golden Rule isn't doing unto others what you'd have them do unto you; it's about doing unto others what THEY want done unto themselves.

Eighteen chapters cover topics from doctors to funeral directors; car salesmen to auto mechanics; realtors to general contractors. Each chapter stands on its own as a "playbook" with practical advice for dealing with common situations. Pawda teaches win-win by showing the reader how to see the world through the other person's eyes.

Read it once for the practical advice. Read it again for insight into human behavior. Read it one more time to transform how you see others.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted and more.......2005-08-07

This book told me everything I wanted to know but was afraid to ask about a whole host of everyday relationships: with my sons' pediatricians, my own doctors, funeral home directors (I've know too many of these), even my hairdresser. The author manages to pry the lid off these often awkward relationships and get to the heart of what makes them awkward. She then offer sometimes surprisingly simple, straightforward advice on ways to improve them: "magic words" indeed!

Thank you for helping to untangle at least part of my complicated life!

5 out of 5 stars Get it right the first time.......2005-07-08

Everyday life has become exceedingly complicate. We don't have the leeway to make mistakes in our dealings with people and expect to learn from these mistakes sometime in the future. We need to increase our chances of getting it right the first time. This is where Lynette Padwa's book comes in. Wouldn't it be better to see a doctor with some prior understanding about how a doctor's office really and how you can maximize getting the best possible treatment? Similarly, if you've never consulted a lawyer before, wouldn't it increase your chances of having a good experience if you knew how lawyers feel about their clients and how a law office operates. I found this book to be both fascinating and highly informative, as well as easy to read. I know I'll use it often.

I thought I pretty much knew what I needed about negotiating life, but this book offers some of the most commonsense, down-to-earth tips I have ever come across -- the kind of info you might seek from someone's uncle or friend of a friend, but here it is. And the kind of info that can apply to you as well as your parents and your kids. Plus, it made me laugh. Great book for college grads.
