Book Description

RM Johnson, the Essence bestselling author of Dating Games and The Harris Family, delivers an absorbing and provocative new novel about the lowdown schemes and broken dreams that follow a fractured marriage.

Successful business entrepreneur Nate Kenny is thrilled to marry the beautiful and intelligent Monica, chiefly because it means he can at last fulfill his lifelong dream of having a family. While he isn't happy about it, he agrees with Monica to wait three years before trying for pregnancy. Once those three years are up and the couple discovers that she is unable to bear children, any love he once felt for Monica is gone, and Nate wants out of the marriage. But he's worried about losing half of his sixty-million-dollar fortune in a divorce settlement. Desperate for an out, he searches for a way to exploit the infidelity clause in the couple's prenuptial agreement.

Enter Lewis Waters. With his baby's mother addicted to drugs, Lewis is already seriously down on his luck when he accidentally smashes his car into Nate's Bentley. Without auto insurance or any way to pay for the repairs, Lewis is at the end of his financial rope. But the scheming Nate sees another way for the attractive young man to repay his debt: as sexual bait for Monica. And so Nate sets up Lewis with all of the accessories he believes Lewis will need to earn Monica's love, or at the very least, her lust: a big house, a fancy car, expensive clothes, and a full bank account. But as is often the case when it comes to matters of the heart, things don't unfold according to plan. When Monica falls hard for Lewis, Nate panics -- was protecting his fortune more important than trying to save his marriage? As he finds himself overwhelmed by second thoughts, Nate is willing to do anything to get Monica back.

An inspired fusion of realism and romance, The Million Dollar Divorce is an unpredictable caper of lust, betrayal, and family ties.

3 out of 5 stars Easy read..........2007-02-16

The book was an easy read, I read it in short time. Money, greed, selfishness, the overwhelming themes all came to the forefront in the end...and the ending was a bit predictable...

I am in a book club, so book discussion guide questions would be a neat idea for the author to include in future books or on his website.

Book Description

Twenty-two-year-old Amy Denovo needs Nero Wolfe's help. She is determined to learn the identity of her father, a secret her mother scrupulously guarded — and took to her grave when struck by a hit-and-run driver. Now Wolfe and his sidekick, Archie, have just one clue to go on: a note from Amy's mother and a box with over $250,000. Seems every month since Amy's birth, her mother received $1,000 from an unknown source and saved it for Amy's future. It's easily enough for Amy to afford Wolfe's services, and he grudgingly agrees. But as the weeks go by, Wolfe realizes this may be one of his most challenging cases ever. Someone doesn't want Amy's pedigree discovered, and that someone appears to wield great power. It isn't long before Wolfe and Archie come to believe that Amy's mother was murdered — and that Amy could be next. Michael Prichard gives another of his masterful readings to this cleverly plotted tale.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A decent entry in the Wolfe series.......2007-04-03

I enjoyed the story--I always like it when Archie and Wolfe run into dead ends before they come up with the answer. It's not the best Wolfe book ever, but Michael Prichard's reading is enjoyable and the story is good.

5 out of 5 stars Another Intelligent Novel By Rex Stout.......2006-03-02

It's hard not to become fascinated by these books, and this one has an attractive symmetry. The whole Manhattan world of offices and penthouses of the 1940s through the 1960s, and Wolfe and Archie's private domain in the brownstone, comprise a universe inside a universe. It is an imagined world more charming to me than Middle Earth or any such silliness. I love it and only regret there is not an infinite supply of Stout. (Yum). Wolfe is especially "cool" as in unemotional in this one. The police are especially bad--more interested in winning some competition than in serving justice. The scene in which the police penetrate the plant rooms and invade the office is truly upsetting. Stout knows what he is doing. The scene elicits a righteous anger. I am eager for the memory of the book and others of Stout's to fade so that I will have the pleasure of reading them again. By the way, I disagree with the reviewer who disliked the audio version. I listened to it as well, and I quite like the reader's approach. He is very serious and that's what I want. These books, unlike the painfully eye-winking, clownish, and embarrassing TV series that appeared on A and E, are not cute and should not be made so. (Perhaps I am misreading the reviewer's comment and this was not the direction he would like to have seen the reading go). The audio versions are read intelligently and are deliberately dry in their humor. I much prefer that myself.

5 out of 5 stars The Mamas and the Papas.......2005-08-11

Here, we join in the search for a father - just as we'd joined in a mother hunt some many years before.

There are some wonderful narrative devices used here, and Archie is better than ever. It's one of the best!

4 out of 5 stars Circumstantial evidence.......2005-06-26

They had been to Shea Stadium to watch the Mets. Amy Denovo told Archie Goodwin she did not know who her father was. Her mother was dead and she no relatives. Archie said that Nero Wolfe had an inflated idea about fees. Amy's mother had been a television producer. She had sent her daughter to Smith.

Archie had learned, with practice, to recount long conversations verbatim. He did this when Miss Denovo appeared with twenty thousand dollars for a retainer to hire the Nero Wolfe organization to identify her father. Her mother, Elinor, had been careful, correct, and cold. Amy was born April 12, 1945. Elinor Denovo had died in a hit and run accident in May. Three pedestrians and a taxi driver had seen her hit by an automobile, (it didn't slow down), on 83rd Street. It turns out that she was hit by a stolen car.

Amy had received money her father had sent to her mother it was presumed. She didn't know who he was and didn't think her mother had liked her. Mother and daughter had lived in New York City. Elinor Denovo had started to work for her employer in 1945 as a stenographer. Her references were not checked.

The name of the man sending payments to Elinor was Cyrus M. Jarrett. He had been president of the Seaboard Bank. He had an estate on the Hudson River and was an art collector. The estate was eighty eight miles from the city. Jarrett claimed he knew nothing about Amy.

Nero Wolfe and Archie discovered that Elinor Denovo's name was Carlotta Vaughn. She had been secretary to Mrs. Jarrett. She came from Wisconsin. In 1944 she suddenly wasn't there, at Jarrett's home. Jarrett put forth an alibi nixing the notion of paternity. As a financier he had war duties in London and other locations abroad during the summer of 1944.

The investigators Saul, Orrie, and Fred were put on the case. (It is amusing to see how in the the Nero Wolfe universe the full press is employed to solve a mystery.) It was determined that Jarrett was the grandfather of Amy and the father was someone, unknown and unacknowledged, called Floyd Vance.

This Nero Wolfe mystery is great, fun, sparkling.

5 out of 5 stars There's no such thing as a bad Nero Wolfe book.......2003-06-22

The Father Hunt does not rate at the top of Rex Stout's plots, but certainly near the top for characterization. Wolfe and Archie have never been better. While some would think this is a companion piece to The Mother Hunt, it should be read only after reading Death of a Doxy, as there is a minor tie-in to that book. A young woman has never known her father, so hires Wolfe to discover his identity. What begins as a simple paternity case ends up being a hunt for a murderer. If you've never read a Nero Wolfe novel before, DON'T read this one--start with one of the earlier books. But if you are familiar with the residents of the brownstone on West 35th Street, a treat awaits.

4 out of 5 stars Emotional story of son's adventures during Civil War.......2000-09-19

Lt. Frank Dickerson (FD) was only 21 when he left his home to be a soldier for the Union army. From the evidence of his letters, he was a devoted son and a dedicated soldier until his death at age 24.

The book is a compilation letters to his father, the Judge Jonathan Dickerson, during his conscription in the Union army. Also included in the book is a forward, preface, and epilogue. Between the letters the editor/narrator, H. Draper Hunt, provides historical insights to assist the reader in understanding some of the events the lieutenant describes (and some he doesn't). It is this reader's opinion that the narrator's comments, while helpful, interfere with the emotional message of the letters.

The style and content of the FD's letters gives the reader a glimpse of the love between the father and son. While the term "dearest" (as in the title) is not present in many greetings, the word affectionate (or an abbreviation for it) is included in almost all closings. It was a secure love; FD was not uncomfortable with the distance between his postings and home, but longed for communication. He often scolds his father for not writing more frequently, but he understands the difference between love that demands presence and one that doesn't. His thoughts on the difference are explained, "You know very well I would like to see you [and you me] but it is impossible, and we don't make a fuss over it (p169)."

FD's initial communications with his father describe a confidence of mission, "The country needs the services of all its sons more now than ever.... (p21)." One knows from the narrator's comments, that the father encouraged such a conception in the son.

FD's initial descriptions and discussions of battle were naïve. While the Union soldiers were victorious, his misunderstanding of the Confederate position was shocking. He expressed moral superiority over the enemy because they didn't stick around to bury their dead, "the barbarous unhuman wretches left hundreds of their dead on the field and...effect[ed] their escape (p28)." One wonders what he thought would have happened had his enemy had not escaped. His understanding of the war and situation matures over time, but his thoughts of superiority over southerners never changes, "...the Tennessee people...are the most illiterate, and shiftless class of people I have yet fell in with... (p181)."

FD's opportunities to witness events are impressive; even in the supporting roles he plays. This reader finds his description of differences between General Meade's and Grant's entourages particularly amusing. While FD doesn't discuss his opinion on the differences, it's clear he respects General Grant.

Even in the early letters, FD hauntingly mentions his own health, "my health is better....(p20)." His protestations of good (and better) health lead the reader along until his tragic death. By his last letter, he is finally convinced that his illness will result in military discharge, "It will probably be impossible for me to remain in the army...on account solely of poor health (p182)." The narrator then describes the "race with death to Belfast." Sadly, the reader is told that he dies in his fathers arms in Boston harbor - never reaching his home in Belfast.

The mystery of what illness FD had was kept from the reader until the end. Consumption (tuberculosis) was the cause. Just as in Puccini's opera, La Bohème, the primary character dies slowly, coughing and loving. After reading all the letters, this reader is left viewing the loss through the eyes of the father. What loss and grief he must have felt from the death of his courageous and loving son.

                Book Description

The Three Doctors-Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt-discovered early in their friendship that they shared one disturbing trait: As children, they had to navigate life in inner-city Newark without a father's support and guidance. While each young man dealt with the turmoil caused by an absent father, with no male role model to turn to for advice, each veered dangerously close to a life of delinquency, drugs, and crime. But despite great odds, the three overcame the statistics. In high school, they formed the Pact, a promise to one another that they would become doctors, and it kept them dedicated to one another and to their dream, and helped to put them on the road to successful careers as physicians.

In The Bond, the Three Doctors plumb their own tough childhoods to explore the national epidemic of fatherlessness. But rather than cling to any bitterness or pain they may have felt as children about their fathers' inability to be in their lives, as adults Davis, Jenkins, and Hunt sought out their fathers and worked to reconnect with them. In the doctors' own words-and their fathers'-they describe the crucial lessons they learned, identifing ways to stem the tide of fatherlessness that's sweeping through communities across the country. Honest, brave, and poignant, The Bond is a book for every family, every father, and every man.

Here's another candidate for the "Whoa! Who's that old guy in the mirror?" genre. The advice in Shed 10 Years in 10 Weeks covers a wide range of age-related complaints: more fat, less muscle, more wrinkles, less sexual vitality, more illness, less short-term memory, and on and on. The proposed solutions to these problems rely heavily on nutritional supplements, which is a bit dubious, and there aren't any recommendations for strength training in the "Regain 10 Years of Muscle" section, which is even more suspect. (Julian Whitaker seems to be a cardio person.) But aside from those two quibbles, the advice seems useful and practical, especially for those who've worked and played just a little too hard in their first 40 or 50 years.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of good advice, some unique information.......2004-03-09

This book purports to assist you, O Baby Boomer, to remove 10 years of aging in only 10 weeks. This book has no schematics to build a time machine, instead it's a guide to vitamin supplements, health issues such as sexuality, diabetes and heart disease, how to preserve your mental accuity and much more. I was surprised to find some interesting nuggets of information that, taken together, form a good blueprint for healthful habits. Some of the habits (quitting smoking) are a given. Others, such as finding supplements like bilberry to ward off eye problems, are not so well-known.

This author is not on the low-carb bandwagon (recommends the more usual lower-fat, whole-grain diet) but this is in keeping with such books as "South Beach Diet."

What's valuable to me are lists of supplements and what degenerative processes they help deter, and a general plan for good health in your middle age and beyond. This is a readable, useful book.

5 out of 5 stars SHED 10 YEARS IN 10 WEEKS: Mostly Diet Advice--But Worth It.......2004-02-17

When a dieter seeks to reclaim youth, health, and vigor, he or she would most likely turn to the newest trend: human growth hormone. Now there is nothing inherently wrong with that as there is a clear place for HGH as a tool for health, but before one goes that route, it might make more sense to go back to the basics of a balanced diet and food supplements. In SHED 10 YEARS IN 10 WEEKS, Dr. Julian Whitaker and Carol Colman urge the health conscious to reappraise their diet so as to eliminate harmful foods and increase beneficial ones. The approach of the authors is bedrock common sense mixed with the knowledge that each brings to the table, he with his years of expertise in diet and nutrition and she with her own contributions to Melatonin and hormone research. What separates these two from other more widely known authors is their ability to take complicated issues related to diet and supplements and make these issues ring with clarity. Whitaker and Colman divide their book into 10 steps or chapters, with each step focusing on one aspect of dietary advice. For example, in step 2, called "Lose A Decade's Worth of Fat," they outline a 10 week program that urges the reader to do all the right things: eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables; establish an optimum intake of carbohydrates, protein, and fat; cut down on red meat, add soy to the diet, recognize that some fats (like Omerga-3 fats) are necessary for cardiovascular health; choose which phytochemicals might help be useful; be aware of the importance of soluble and insoluble fibers. Now all this is what your Granny might have been telling you for years, but Whitaker and Colman manage to punctuate Granny's sage advice with the absolute need to listen to her and to them. The major focus of this book is on diet and supplements. It is interesting to note that if one were to follow their advice prior to adding human growth hormone to a health regimen, then the results of that HGH might likely deliver the fancy promises of the hype. SHED 10 YEARS IN 10 WEEKS is highly recommended in that it takes a complicated subject and breaks it down into easily manageable chunks.

5 out of 5 stars New Healthy Beginning.......2003-03-23

I began reading this book after I quit smoking hoping for a healthy new beginning. It is absolutely a delightful understanding of how you can reverse past mistakes and embark on a fresh start to reverse aging. I have basically purchased many of the suggested items and have seen a remarkable change. Alot of the items were somehow difficult to find such as the high potency multi vitamins without iron which was suggested but I am searching vigorously. I think anyone who reads this will understand when I tell them to purchase this for friends and loved ones. Awesome reading!

5 out of 5 stars Direct, Accurate, To The Point.......2002-04-28

Filled with practical, well researched information this book contains the distilled knowledge of the most recent studies on aging. The book is organized in a way that allows you to go to the areas that concern you most and read that section without having to read all the preceding chapters.
The chapters cover such topics as getting rid of fat, regaining lost muscle, boosting your brain power, getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles, recharging your immune system and others. Julian Whitaker and Carol Colman have created an interesting book that puts information you would normally have to search across many reference articles to find into one easy to read book.

5 out of 5 stars Hmmm....Change from Within or Go Without?.......2001-01-03

What Whitaker and Colman say is that we have two choices: we can either accept the aging philosophically, or we can intervene and take steps to help our bodies overcome these new challenges. We can actually slow down the processes of aging and reverse some of the damage that has already begun. And we can begin before we reach the age of forty, without a doubt.

I was so impressed with the changes brought about by following the regiments in this book that I bought one each for my parents and my brothers. Definitely an eye-opener and a great way to learn that beauty definitely comes from within (and it's deeper than the skin)!
