Book Description
1999 Gold Medallion Award winner!
A repackage of Francine Rivers's beloved novel, now with stunning movie stills from the motion picture releasing in January 2007 and bonus discussion questions.
All that matters for Cadi Forbes is finding the one man who can set her free from the sin that plagues her, the sin that has stolen her mother's love from her and made her wish she could flee life and its terrible injustice. But Cadi doesn't know that the "sin eater" is seeking as well. Before their journeys are over, Cadi and the sin eater must face themselves, each other, and the One who will demand everything from them in exchange for the answers they seek. A captivating tale of suffering, seeking, and redemption.

The Last Sin Eater.......2007-09-13
I loved this movie; of course, the book is even better. Nevertheless, this is a stirring movie that will leave you crying both tears of relief and joy in the end as misunderstandings are finally made clear. Basically, a daughter is reunited with her estranged mother through a series of events. All I can is that you've got to watch this movie. By the way, the beginning is a little confusing, but it will all make sense at the end. Or, if you read the book you'll understand exactly what's happening at the beginning of the movie.
A Good Read.......2007-08-09
Although somewhat predictable it was non-the-less enjoyable. I read it through during a long drive and a day at the beach. Any fan of Francine Rivers will not be disappointed! I'm looking forward to watching the Michael Landon Jr. produced movie of this book out on video soon.
Excellent Book.......2007-08-02
This was an excellent book. I knew that the movie had been released and I wanted to read the book before I watched the movie. The books are always so much better, though the movie was very good as well. If someone is saying that it isn't realistic, that the children could never repeat the scripture just by listening to the preacher, doesn't know the power of God. You are right, even though I have many verses to my memory, it would have been extremely hard for me to repeat all that was said to them through this man. But seeing God's miraculous hand in many difficult situations, I have no problem seeing the reality of this situation. This person also may not know very many missionaries. We have several very close friends who are missionaries and the stories they have shared with us are simply amazing! There is a God and He is very active in the lives of His children. If He wants His Word spread to the most remote areas of the world, it will be accomplished. All through scripture, we see how God chooses the weak to be used it huge ways. Look at King David--a puny little shepherd boy, yet God used him to slay Goliath. Later, that same young man becomes a mighty King. Yes, it is very possible for God to take two young children like Caddie and Fagan to bring his message of salvation to those mountain people. Excellent Book! This was my first Francine Rivers book. Now I am hungry to read more from her!
Another Excellent novel by Rivers.......2007-07-18
This novel was excellent. I wasn't sure about the topic when I read the description, but I couldn't put it down. I love Francine Rivers books and I think this is one of her best.
The Last Sin Eater.......2007-07-04
I thought this book was very good. I live in the South and know that the mountains are like living in the darkness because of lack of education. I thought it was well written and held my interest. The only problem I had with it was that the main characters were a little young for what they were going through.

Not a Fan.......2004-07-12
This is my introduction to Jack Frost and I didn't enjoy it. Total lack of respect for women. Is this a British thing calling all females cows? A more disreputable character I would hate to meet. I can't find one good thing to say about this author. The story was way too long and left a lot of holes not filled in. Course who would have suspected 2 women, but after rounding up everyone Frost could he was bound to stumble on the actual perps. I have read many, many better mysteries. Try Anne Perry sometime. She writes about Dectectives in London too.
Just Sheer Brilliance.......2003-09-03
Every Frost book I read is such supurb pleasure that I want to just keep reading it. This one is no exception. It is not Agatha Christie, nor is it Shakespeare. It is classic, never-the-less. It wont suit all - some people prefer more long words, or their sense of humour is too restricted. Frost books keep me on the edge of the seat, and emotionally charged. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I am just too absorbed. Winter Frost (like all the others) had just these effects. The TV series is good (David Jason is excellant) but the books are much more involved and dark. If you've read and enjoyed one book - you'll love the rest. If you haven't, then give it a try! Because although each book has some similarities (LIFE is LIKE THAT) it is equally true to say that each book is different. If one reviewer tells you the characters are cardboard, then I say I know several of the characters in real life. different names, but it's them never-the-less. maybe that makes real life cardboard. I dunno. But I just love these books.
ps. Mr R.D. Wingfield. PLEASE write another soon.
easy uninspiring read.......2002-08-06
I read this book on holidays having just read Philip Roths "The human stain".
It is readable but repetitive and stereotypical. I enjoy the TV series but in contrast to conventional wisdom the book is disappointing in comparison
Frost comes across as a combination of Colombo and Benny Hill in a Carry on film. The characters are all cardboard cut outs and the ubiquituous bacon sandwiches ,page 3 females and viagra fired men becomes tiresome.
A mindless read after a heavy book or 10 pints of lager!!
Another fine addition to the series.......2001-11-08
If your a fan of the series as I am, this novel was worth the wait. Frost is up to his elbows in crime again with a serial killer of prostitutes and another rapist and killer of small children among his problems. Of course, the bureaucratic Mullet is not helping things either. Frost attacks these problems with his usual wit and style, yet Frost also experiences a great deal of self doubt in this instance as the investigations drag on due to dead ends and the lack of resources and manpower. Fans of the TV series will recognize that sense of melancholy that David Jason so well portrays.
It was a great and entertaining read and the humor had me laughing out loud. Five stars
I'm sorry I've finished reading this book!.......2001-06-26
And I'll have to wait for the next book of this "Jack Frost" series for a long time. Maybe two years? Or more than that?
He has been the same since I first read "A touch of Frost.": a dirty, lousy, lazy, but lovable bloke. He is very charming especially when the situation around him gets worse and worse. It's because, I think, he never blame anyone but himself under any pressure.
If you haven't recently met a charming man, go for this book and find him very attractive!!!

Faithful Unto Death: A Chief Inspector Barnaby Novel (Chief Inspector Barnaby Mystery)
ASIN: 0553571702
Release Date: 1995-09-01 |
Book Description
Detective Inspector Jack Frost, Denton Division, is not beloved by his superiors. In fact, he's something of a pain in the brass: unkempt and unruly, with a taste for crude humor and a tendency to cut corners. They'd like nothing better than to bounce him from the department. The only problem is, Frost's the one D.I. who, by hook or by crook, always seems to find a way to get the job done. It's a high price to pay for a pak of smokes when Frost interrupts his vacation to filch some of Commander Mullett's cigarettes and finds himself pressed into emergency duty. Denton Division is shorthanded after a car crash involving several tipsy high-ranking cops, and on Guy Fawkes night there's more mischief abroad than just a few children making the rounds begging for pennies and lighting firecrackers. In the next few days, Frost will deal with a parade of miscreants, including a blackmailer, a shifty businessman, a not-so-greiving widow, a sexual pervert or two, a crazed housewife, and a cold-blooded kidnapper. The clock is ticking, and Frost is perilously short of clues...

Frost turns up the heat.......1998-11-11
Jack Frost is not the person you would invite to dinner with friends you are trying to impress but he does have endearing qualities that not only make him a good detective, but wit that many a stand up comedian would be proud of. In the latest Frost series Jack is called from leave to find a missing boy and along the way has murder, and fraud to deal with. The story moves along at great pace with Mullet playing two ends against the middle as usual while Jack gets an old foe who loathes him to assist in the crime spree and Jack of course turns this to his own advantage.. There is also a new female kid on the block who has delusions of grandeur which are repelled by the male chauvanism that pervades in the police station. This is a great read and one that will make you laugh aloud from time to time whilst keeping your attention to the job at hand.
Frost keeps up the good work.......1998-10-01
People who did not enjoy any of the previous stories about Jack Frost probably won't like this one either. For the rest of us, it's a continuation of one of the best detective-story-series ever. Superintendent Mullett is as much of a pig as ever (boy I am glad he's not my boss!!) and Frost also gets himself a new archnemesis. Like in the previous books, there's a lot going on at the same time. The main crime is the kidnapping of a young boy.

A good beginning to a new series.......2006-05-07
Ron Shade is a Chicago-based PI in the vein of Robert B. Parker's Spenser. However, he is not a clone in any stretch of the imagination.
Since this is one of Shade's first fiction books, it is expected for there to be a few hiccups along the way. However, Black's effort was well-done with less problems than many established authors have exhibited.
The plot involves the disappearance of an illegal alien. Shade is hired to find him. Along the way, his car is stolen and he finds romance and romantic difficulties.
Like a Spenser novel, it is not the suspense of finding out whodunnit that keeps the reader turning pages. Rather, it is the interest in finding out how the hero will stick it to the bad guys.
Solid read. I give this one a B and I'll be looking for the sequels.
A Great New PI in the Tradition of Spenser and Archer.......2005-02-21
Author Michael Black has created a PI (Ron Shade) for the current times and set his PI in the Windy City, Chicago. That is fitting, since the author also has been a cop in Chicago for a number of years, and obviously, Chicago has some "mean streets" down which PI Ron Shade can prowl.
As a female reader who enjoys PI novels, I can't help but think that Black has created a PI that's macho--Shade is a competitive kickboxer--and one that also has a kind of gentle soul. For example, in Shade's love scenes with girl friend Maria, he is sensitve with a slow hand, so to speak.
Black's writing is spare and moves the story along quietly and efficiently. The reader doesn't have to wade through lengthy exposition. I could see a bit of Parker's Spenser in Ron Shade. For example, Spenser works out at a gym with a buddy who owns it, and Shade works out, too, and has a buddy in Chappie, the gym owner and his manager. There's also a bit of Macdonald's Lew Archer in Shade in that both have loner/melancholy qualities about them.
But Shade is distinctive.
I finished the book in one sitting, and when I closed it, I had the sense that I'd gotten in on the ground floor with this debut novel of Black's. I have no doubt that his PI character will evolve in upcoming novels and give readers many hours of enjoyment.
And I'm looking forward to the next one.
Great Read!.......2003-12-16
I enjoyed this novel. It was a fast and fun read and I am looking forward to more by him. I think he is going to get better and better. Bring on the next book!
A Great First Novel.......2003-08-19
"A Killing Frost" is a fun read. If you don't want anything to heavy and are into the Robert B. Parker style of gumshoe, you will definitely enjoy Michael Blacks' introdcution to Ron Shade, detective and martial artist.
The story, like all good detective novels, is written in the first person. Ron Shade is a former SWAT team member and martial artist, currently attempting to win the world heavyweight kickboxing title. The story is simple and fairly straight forward (Really just a missing person case) and therefore highly believable. Black's understanding of police procedure and his in depth knowledge of the feelings that a fighter has while he trains are very entertaining. There is a nice romance underlying the main story that keeps the reader caring about the characters. Also, the descriptions of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs are right on the nut.
This book was definitely worth the money spent. Hopefully we haven't seen the last of Michael Black.
Almost 5 stars.......2003-01-22
Black is a confident writer with a take charge attitude. He doesn't waste too many pages setting up his characters, explaining their relationships to each other or any subtle clues on when or where the mystery will occur. Instead he gives us a character who is original yet funny but has had his share of bad luck. Ron grew up in Chicago and had a rough childhood. An older cop took him under his wing and convinced to serve in the army. Upon his return he joined the men in blue in protecting the rough streets of Chicago while on duty one day something goes wrong and he is no longer a cop. The author hasn't fully told this story but his friends are sympathetic to him as he begins a career as a private detective. While all this is going on, he is also working out for a fight in the ring where boxing and kick boxing is combined into an event. His current case is for an old friend who is trying to locate a missing fiancee. As Ron works the case, he learns that Carlos uncovered a dirty secret for the company he was employed. Black uses an old plot of a company doing deceitful things and hiding under dummy corporation to fly under the radar of the government. The originality comes from the way Black uses action to propel the plot to the end. I figured
out early on what the secret was but by that time I wanted to see how Ron would figure it all out. And Ron works hard to apprehend the persons in the company he rubs the investigator on the case the wrong way and ends up solving the case his way. If you like Myron ( Harlan Coben ) or Elvis ( Robert Crais) or even Patrick ( Dennis Lehane) give this new author a chance. He will be a master storyteller like Connelly soon.

Society decrees that Lady Ophelia Brinsby, a duke's daughter, must marry a man of rank. But sharp-witted Ophelia finds her eligible suitors duller than yesterday's gossip. To relieve her boredom, Ophelia escapes her grand house daily for secret visits with her lively artistic friends. Hidden Food Allergies.......2006-07-21
As a middle-aged allergy patient, my allergist recommended this book to me because I'm always getting sick with colds and other infections. The book, Your Hidden Allergies Are Making You Fat, is not just about dieting, but contains a wealth of information about how food sensitivities can negatively affect your whole body and your life. My allergist, with over thirty years of experience with patients, said, "This is the best book I've read about hidden food allergies." I agree. It explains, in easy to understand terms, the science of allergic reactions to foods, how to deal with symptoms, and best of all, it thoroughly describes a simple blood test, the ALCAT test. This test identifies your food intolerances, so that you can develop an individualized eating plan to help lose weight or feel better/get well from illnesses.
I'm grateful for this book and have just had the ALCAT test. I'm now ready to have a diet plan prepared for me by a dietician using the results of the ALCAT test. I highly recommend this amazing book.
I'm returning it.......2005-01-11
I am so disappointed in this book, I am returning it. My primary reason? The authors keep mentioning 100 trigger foods that the ALCAT tests for, yet they never provide this list. Why not? Because this book is simply a marketing vehicle to get people to order the test through their lab.
30 years of Stomach Ailments Cured overnight.......2003-10-08
Doctors told me that I did not have a "disease" and so they could not help me. I had IBS(Irritable Bowel Syndrome) everyday. Before I could leave for work, I took over the counter help-3 times the normal dose. That did not include what I needed throughout the rest of the day. I did not even mention to the doctors about the acid reflux EVERY night. I thought it was mild compared to the agony and embarrassment that I suffered of the irritable bowel syndrome. There was nothing regular physicians could or would do. The Al-Cat test (and Dr. Rivera) saved my life. When the digestive system breaks down so will the immune system eventually. Since the day I began avoiding the foods I am allergic to and following the prescribed new way of eating, I have had NO acid reflux. I have been free of IBS for nearly 10 months straight. (Only occassional boughts of it before that.) I have lost 60 pounds total. I feel great. I am in the best shape of my life at age 52. I feel 30. (My husband enjoys the change.) Reading the book won't change anything. But following its suggestions and reccommendations could save your life!
the hidden truth.......2002-03-04
I am the mother of 6 children, 2 of those children have problems with their weight, after trying so many different styles we finally realized that the main culpert was the food allergies. When you realize that when you are allergic to a food your body can not break it down and so it sits there, your body does not have the enzymes to break down and eliminate certain foods. Knowledge is power the Bible says, this book has given us some answers to questions and has enabled my children to feel good about themselves.
Thank you
Just an ad for their test.......2002-01-26
I was very dissapointed in this book. It talked about how food allergies make us sick with very few specifics and no real info on how to go about fixing it. There are no references, though many exist. It is just an ad for their test. [...]. Don't waste your money.
