Book Description
Cautious Grace Singleton, uncertain of her place in an intimidating world. Outspoken Hannah Parrish, harboring a private fear that may change her life. Fragile Amelia Declose, shattered by devastating grief. Circumstance has brought these disparate women of "a certain age" to a Pennsylvania boardinghouse where three square meals and a sagging bed is the most any of them can look forward to. But friendship will take them on a startling journey to a rundown North Carolina farmhouse where the unexpected suddenly seems not only welcome, but delightfully promising. And with nothing more than a bit of adventure in mind, each woman will be surprised to find that the years they've reclaimed from the shadow of twilight will offer something far more rare: confidence, competence, and even another chance at love....AUTHORBIO: JOAN MEDLICOTT lives in Barnardsville, North Carolina. She is a grandmother and now at work on her second novel.

The Ladies of Covington Send Their Love.......2007-09-17
I love the Ladies of Covington and the special friendship they share. Hannah, Grace, and Amelia are very different ladies and unique in their own way. This is a story of making something worthwhile work, for all of them, and certainly a story that most ladies in their senior years will be able to identify with. I look forward to reading the next book.
Three great ladies seeking a brand new start in life-A+++!.......2007-07-24
This book begins with 3 ladies that live together in Olive Pruitt's stuffy retirement home. When the book opens, Grace Singleton is trying to find out where any of Amelia DeClose's relatives might be as Amelia is in the hospital having some surgery done, but is recovering very fast. Amelia receives a parcel from her long lost cousin, Arthur Furrior who had passed away, willing her his property on the farm. It includes several acres of land, and a rundown farmhouse. But he also includes the sum of $50,000 to fix up the property.
Daring to seek adventure away from Branston PA., the three ladies head for Covington North Carolina to have a look at the farmhouse. They do find it needs almost a complete renovation, but little by little have it all fixed up like new. They love Covington at first sight, and talk about staying there forever. It takes awhile to convince Grace. She does not like changes in life as she used to always stick with her husband until he died in the same old rut. But gradually, she gives in to moving with Hannah and Amelia, and the three settle in for many new adventures.
This changes Grace for the better as she reaches out to new adventures and meets a new love in her life. The fragile Amelia, who had a lot of tragedy in her life that made her the way she is, discovers photography and this is her new love. And Hannah, who needs a hip replacement, has surgery, recovers nicely, and starts a greenhouse selling the plants she's always had a love for. Hannah has two girls, and in the past an abusive husband that made her fearful of life.
Grace's only son Roger is gay, and his partner Charles has HIV. Grace is devastated when she finds this out. Roger and his partner begin a new business and live life to the fullest even though Charles is sick.
A threat comes along from some other people that claim to have ownership to the farmhouse. The ladies then have another problem and have to seek an attorney's help to be able to hold on to the property that really is theirs.
First book of a promising series.......2007-07-08
Grace, Hannah, and Amelia are senior citizens who are living in a joyless boarding home, thanks either to their circumstances or to their children.
When Amelia inherits a home in the mountains of North Carolina, the ladies decide to investigate the house and see if it has possibilities. They overcome their fears and doubts and even the ramshackle state of the house in order to renovate and renew their lives and create a new home together. They soon fall in love with Covington and become involved with new interests and new friends. Their first year in Covington is an eventful one, as they forge their new lives and gain confidence and independence. Not all of their problems are solved, which leaves plenty for the succeeding books in the series. I look forward to reading more about the Ladies of Covington.
Let's Move to the Mountains.......2007-06-04
Three ladies meet at a "senior" home. One inherits a home in the mountains of North Carolina. They decide to move to the mountains together. Their adventure begins...
I loved this story because it was like a visit to the mountains. It was a good way to spend an afternoon. I look forward to reading other books in the Covington series.
I recommend this book if you like family stories and mountains.
The "Me-First " Generation........2007-04-25
Although I admire some facets of these women's (can't bring myself to call them ladies) personalities but I can not say that I like them. They show that the ME FIRST generation is not limited to those under 30. If you are looking for a Christian read, this is not it. God to these women has no real meaning or place in their lives. I was terribly mislead by a professional reviewer who cited Jan Karon. Sorry I wasted my money. In the future I will read the readers reviews more carefully!!!

my lunchtime companion.......2007-05-13
Anne Perry always astounds with her inticate yet warmly drawn characters and plots. This story is a BEST on my list -her writing always satisfies, and educates. I am amazed at the talent of this woman.
Hang someone to quiet the public.......2002-06-12
This novel is somewhat slow reading, perhaps because there seems to be an excess of extraneous details, e.g., you may learn more than you want about baking fruitcakes. On the other hand, some details related to the case never seem to be fully explained. The plot is somewhat transparent for a whodunit, i.e., you can guess the identity of villains before they are exposed.
The setting is London in 1889. Five years earlier a brutal murder had outraged the public. Police were previously criticized for not catching Jack the Ripper. Pressures for an arrest in this case led to the conviction and hanging of a Jewish actor. Anti-semitism had run high with attacks on Jews and Jewish owned businesses. Now questions have been raised.
A Justice who had served on the appeals court for the case is looking into it again. When he dies during a theatre performance, Inspector Thomas Pitt is assigned to investigate, and he re-examines the old case the Justice was reviewing. There is strong pressure not to rock the boat. A reversal in the five-year old case would embarass many people from individual policemen to Justices of the appeals court. Some surprising facts are revealed as the case draws to its conclusion. As a sidelight, Charlotte's maid Gracie acquires a young admirer.
Like other novels in this series, we are provided with a picture of Victorian era society in London. The novel has some amount of violence and some references to sexual encounters.
This is the first book I have read by Anne!.......2000-09-17
If you are looking for a good book, I suggest getting this book, because I have only read 2 chapters and I am already captivated! I also suggest a book by Jill Jones, Bloodline, WHICH IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!
Past and Present Murders Baffle the Reader.......2000-08-14
The murder of a judge is wittnessed by the Pitts. It leads Thomas to open a five year old case, a murder for which a man was hung. Step by step the author leads us through a 19th century maze of prejudices and social barriers. An additional murder ups the stakes. Charlotte has her own problems. her mother has fallen in love with a Jewish actor fifteen years her junior and to make matters worst he is a suspect in the murders. As always Anne Perry is letter perfect in her depiction of the period. Her plot is particularly puzzling. I enjoyed the twists.I highly recommend this book.
This one baffled me! One of the best in the Pitt series.......2000-07-18
Even though I'm familiar with Anne Perry's rhythms as a writer, her characters, her fascination with the secrets people keep, and her addiction to slipping messages about today's prejudices into her books on 19th-century England, I thoroughly enjoyed Farrier's Lane, and was baffled until the very end!
While Thomas and Charlotte Pitt enjoy a rare night at the theatre, an appeals court judge dies of a seeming heart attack in a nearby box. However, the death is much more suspicious than it seemed at first and opium poisoning is suspected. But who would poison Judge Stafford? There are many suspects: his wife Juniper, his wife's lover, or even people involved in a five-year old case in Farrier's Lane. No matter how hard Thomas Pitt tries to solve the case by exploring more up-to-date possibilities, Charlotte continues to be preoccupied with a murder and crucifixion in Farrier's Lane. Ugly motives like anti-Semitism and the rush to judgement eventually disclose the murderer of Judge Stafford and the miscarriage of justice that happened five years earlier.

Book Description
For two quietly unhappy years, linguist Claire Gallagher has been living deep in the New Hampshire woods, enduring a polite but strained marriage to a highly respected scientist. Once a determined overachiever and academic star in her own right, she now spends her days avoiding her stalled dissertation and creating EZ crossword puzzles. But for all Claire's knowledge of words and their meanings, the meaning in her own life eludes her. One bleak morning in winter, she announces that she's leaving.
By nightfall, at the urging of her younger sister Noelle, Claire finds herself heading to the last place she thought she would ever go: Ireland -- the birthplace of her abrasive, chronically ill mother and the country Noelle, a college dropout, now calls home. In a small town on the Irish coast, Claire's struggle to move ahead with her life takes her deep into the puzzles of her past -- in a world in which there are no simple answers, and the only questions that matter are those of the heart.

Book Description
Darkness has fallen over the realm of Birddom. The skies rain blood, no nest is safe, and the winds are thick with fear, pain, and death.
Driven by an unslakable desire to kill and conquer, the black-feathered magpies-aided by their brutish cousins, the crows-have hunted down and slaughtered countless species of smaller birds into extinction. Led by the malevolent, power-mad Slyekin and his sadistic assassin, Traska, a reign of terror has laid waste to the beauty and freedom that was once Birddom. Now, Slyekin is preparing to launch his final assault against all that was once pure, and proclaim his vile dominion.
To stop the gathering storm, Kirrick, a lone robin who witnessed the massacre of everything he loved, must undertake a journey beyond all reckoning. Through danger and deceit, Kirrick soars to all corners of the land, rallying those who would fight to save Birddom. From the proud might of the eagles, to the ancient wisdom of the owls, to the unlikeliest earthbound creatures, the allies of good must join together to oppose the shadowy menace that threatens them all-or fall from the sky forever.
In an epic conflict of bloodied beak and razor-sharp talon, of undaunted courage and unspeakable evil, of love, loyalty, and wings of honor, the battle for very soul of Birddom is about to begin.
Customer Reviews:
the premise is good, the rest appaling.......2007-03-30
the ideas were good, and showed real promise, but Woodall failed to deliver. The writing was such that if I wrote that, and tried to turn it in to my teacher, she would give me that look that teachers and parents wear when they know we can do better. Then she would tell me that if I do not rewrite this, I will be recieving a C. This book could not deside whether it was meant for children, or mature readers. In between the graphic violence and other mature subject matter, the language used was almost insultingly childlike. The characters are poorly developed and flat, and are given to extremes. Human expressions and ways of thought are poorly adapted, and serve only to confuse the reader. the plot itself was poorly developed, and repeated itself in the second book. this book is like Redwall only in that its characters are animals. Redwall is far its superior in writing, plot, and character formation. This book is a waste of time better spent doing anything other than illegal activity and reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, or The Cay.However, even those can be used in school. Never mind my teacher giving me a C, she would call my parents and try to get me counciling. Need I say more?
Disappointing and depressing.......2007-03-27
As an avid fan of anthropomorphed animal tales in the vein of Gary Kilworth and Richard Adams, this book's beautiful cover had no trouble catching my eye. Unfortunately, the cover is the sole redeeming quality of the book.
After reading "One for Sorrow, Two for Joy", I'd have to say that the synopsis on the dust jacket was terribly misleading in regards to what actually matters in the story. Yes, there is the grand struggle to save all of Birddom. But Kirrick is not the main protagonist, and the 'treacherous' Slyekin is pathetic in comparison to the true antagonist, Traska. What could have been a great novel quickly degenerates into an addled mess of graphic violence; as this is a book that will appeal to younger readers, whether that was the intended the developement of two characters. Instead of honor, love and integrity, this book resonates with hatred, cruelty, genocide, suffering and revenge. The ending left me sick to my stomach. The one character who deserved to triumph, doesn't, and honestly, I ended up feeling more empathy for Traska than I did for the 'good guys'.
Another thing to note is the aggravating writing style employed in this novel. Woodall uses a mix of action/dialogue and introspective descriptions of what is going through the minds of characters...the latter, excessively so. I lost count of how many times Woodall would repeat himself using slightly different wordings (...Kirrick did not know if he had the courage to go on. But, he knew he had to...another page later...again, Kirrick is doubting himself and doesn't think he can do it). This might be excusable if it happened once or twice, but Woodall does it throughout the entire book. Perhaps there should have been more plot and character developement, rather than pointless reptition.
All in all, if you love Redwall and Watership Down, read "Tailchaser's Song" and anything with animals by Gary Kilworth, particularly "Frostdancers", "House of Tribes" and the Welkin Weasel series. "One for Sorrow, Two for Joy" is an ultimately forgettable book, and your reading time would be much better spent with something else.
One For Sorrow Two For Joy.......2007-03-05
The story One for Sorrow Two for Joy is about Birddom's struggles with an evil population of birds. THe magpies intend on total conquest and are opposed by the last of the robins, Kirrick, and the snowy owl,Tomar. Along with some drastic moves and daring escapes, there is also romance, violence and a suspense. I recomend this book for ages 10 and up for some gory pages and the dialogue may be hard to follow along. Also, it relates to Kathrine Lasky's Guardians of Ga'Hoole so if you liked them then this is a addition.
A classic it is not.......2006-09-15
The book was decent, maybe a little better than average, but is definately not an epic tale and the dialogue and the plot left a lot to be desired. Still, the author is a good writer, just not so good a storyteller - it could have been better. I admit also, I did listen to this as a book on CD, and I don't think I would have liked it as much if I had read the book, but the guy who did the reading did a great job. I also have to admit, then I will never look at crows and magpies the same and after finishing this book I had the sudden urge to go out and shoot some crows.
Plagued with Problems.......2006-08-11
For me, "One for Sorrow, Two for Joy" gets put into the "How did this get published" category, not in any category alongside "Watership Down" or "Redwall". I knew I was in for trouble when I got to page 50-something and realized I was already anxious to start a different book. This was a shame since there was quite a lot of buzz surrounding Woodall's novel.
First things first, this book is aimed as a children's story. Understandable considering the characters, but the themes of Genocide and Rape are not exactly "kid-friendly". These adult themes become the center of the book, but there isn't anything else adult about it, except for the graphic violence with words like "mutilated" describing the battles that are constantly full of blood and guts. The rest is written in a very child-like manner, too child-like for the overall content. The characters are all cardboard-thin with every segment of dialogue agonizing to wade through: nothing but encouraging words and flattery from one bird to another.
Then there's the narrator. I don't know Woodall's literary background, but it's got to be somewhat lacking. The narrator is constantly going from omniscient to non-omniscient, showing personality, then only relaying facts and also suffering from one of the first rules of writing, "Show, don't Tell".
Not only are the central elements of writing very lacking in Woodall's story, even his plot is bare-bones. The entire first segment has paragraph after paragraph of the birds speaking about Tomar's "plan", which the reader is left out of. I will say Woodall is talented in writing a lot about nothing in particular. Not until the end of segment one does the reader find out what Kirrick's been flying to and fro for. But after all the deception, there's really not much to be filled in about.
Also, the plot is stale with book one and two being exactly the same, only different characters supplemented for the same roles. Segment One: Kirrick embarks on a great journey to save Birdom by obtaining allies to fight the Magpies. Segment Two: Portia embarks on a great journey to save Birdom by obtaining allies for repopulation.
I was surprised to find out there's a sequel to this poorly written book. Hopefully Mr. Woodall's gotten a little better at the craft, but I'll probably never know. I've got much better things to read.

Straight to the Heart.......2003-11-16
This is a touching, heartwarming tale that goes to the heart of the Irish love for horses. Read it for the story itself, the colorful setting and characters, and for its inherent insight and wisdom.
My favorite book.......2003-11-14
One for Sorrow, Two for Joy is a story of bravery, hope and determination with a real life bittersweet ending. The main character, Janeen, felt like my best friend. It is an exciting story and a wonderful read.

Book Description
Childhood traumas range widely in their severity and impact. A car accident, an earthquake or flood, being attacked by a dog, undergoing a frightening medical treatment?all are distinctly different events yet all provoke common symptoms of psychological trauma. These symptoms may include fearfulness, nightmares, and dramatic behavioral or personality changes. And parental anxiety over changes in a child can, in turn, complicate the healing process.
Children and Trauma teaches parents and professionals about the effects of such ordeals on children and offers a blueprint for restoring a child's sense of safety and balance. Cynthia Monahon, a child psychologist who specializes in the treatment of psychological trauma, offers hope and reassurance for parents. She suggests straightforward ways to help kids through tough times, and also describes in detail the warning signs that indicate a child needs professional help. Monahon helps adults understand psychological trauma from a child's point of view and explores the ways both parents and professionals can help children heal.

Children and Trauma..Very Informative.......2006-05-03
This book is extremely helpful and an easy read especially for parents who need it during the most stressful times of dealing with trauma. A great book. I recommended it to anyone who is or has a loved one dealing with children and trauma.
Very informative.......2000-04-04
Children and Trauma: A Guide for Parents and Professionals is a very informative guide to help us to help our children. I am a Clinical Psychologist who works with children who have experienced trauma in their young lives. This book is well-written and provides information for both the layperson and those who specialize in this field. This book is clearly structured so that one may go to the sections which may be most applicable to the child you are wanting to assist. I highly recommend this book.
