fable foibles.......2007-08-18
I would have to say the only thing preventing this from a 1 star ranking from me is that the overall message is rather harmless. Unfortunately the writing style may cause headaches and eyestrain. It's very repetitive and inelegant, and very self-aware. the story is VERY religious, and very predictable. I think the biggest problem I had with this book is that it is a modern attempt at an ancient style. What makes fables and ancient text appealing to me is the connectedness I feel with people and places that are centuries old. This is nothing more than a hijacking of the fable mechanism transformed to modern new-age fluff. I'd suggest it for kids, but I think most adults will find themselves rolling their eyes at the heavy handed cliche's found in this highly overrated beach book
It Inspires and Entertains.......2006-06-02
If stories were paint and words a paintbrush, this is one peice of art I would visit in a galary everyday -just to look at it. Nothing else, just look at it. The picture the author has painted with this story is inpiring and goes very well with another book that is, sadly, out of print: A Champion Lies Within.
Although I read a slighlty different version earlier in my life, when I saw the Illustrated version of the Alchemist at a random yard sale- I had to have it for my collection.
Its not even the story itself that is so grand - Although it is well written and illustrated, I'd say that its message is one that the world should hear.
Pick it up! It doesnt take long to read but the on-going lessons that it provides are a real treat. Besides being provokative- if you just want a good read it is very entertaining! I know you will love it - as well as many others by the same author.
And all you others... stop complaining so much about all this neo-pagan neo-christian Stuff! Its like refusing to look at a painting just because it was done by a german or a jew or something. Take it for what it is, take what you WANT out of it and stop griping about what you DONT want because that helps no-one.
That said- I gladly give it 5 stars. ~Enjoy
the Pictures enhance the Story.......2006-05-11
This is an amazing book. It is a story of a young man who has a dream of hidden treasure. It is a book that alludes to that fact that all of us have a purpose and a dream. Yet many settle and give up their dream, and lose their passion for life. In this book it is stated again and again that each of us has our own Personal Legend, a quest; "When you pursue your personal legend the universe will conspire with you to make it happen." You will follow Santiago on his adventure and during the process be challenged to think about your goals and dreams and what you would have to do to pursue them.
Dreams.......2006-03-30
Mr. Coelho did an excellent job. It's a wonderful book. I wish I could give it 10 stars. The metaphors are very unique, simple and applicable to our daily life. I would recommend it to everybody who can read. It doesn't matter you are a child or old. There is something in it for everybody. I don't know who did the translation but I hope it's as close to original meaning as possible.
One of the century's most important books.......2006-03-01
This well-written fable should speak to everyone, whether a dreamer, former dreamer, or person who wishes to have been a dreamer. No one really wants to be the baker.

Sometimes a Fable Can Save Your Life.......2006-07-28
Once more Porfiry Petrovich has gotten himself into trouble with his superiors. He is so high on the sh-t list that he'll need a parachute if he falls off. In this book there are three main crimes: Sasha is looking for a group that is stealing the cars of upper party members(including the car of Porfiry's new boss, the new deputy procurator); Karpo is looking for a sniper (using a WW2 rifle) who has killed a policeman; Porfiry is looking for the murderer of an 84 year old jewish man who took an old brass candlestick after the crime.
As those of us who have read the three previous books know, all of the investigations will insomeway be impacted by Rostnikov. The search for the murderer of the old man is the most interesting because it has to do with his old friends from before the revolution. One has become an actor, one emigrated to america and came back in the thirties, and one stayed on in the states and became a mafioso (though it's never stated).
Lurking behind all this is the fall-out from Rostnikov's failed blackmail scheme, of the KGB, in order to obtain exit-visas for him and his wife. She has lost her job and been unable to find another, and he has been demoted. But because he is such a good investigator, he is temporarily put on the cases of the stolen cars and the sniper. Porfiry proves his competance by solving all the crimes (as well as insuring that the deputy procurator's car comes back in pieces).
Strangley enough, that parachute that Porfiry needs shows up right at the end of the book (he has made a powerful though dangerous new friend). His new boss is sent to Leningrad, and it looks like the old deputy procurator will be coming back to work (at least part time). His life will seem to be getting a little bit better in the future...but, he can still screw it up if he tries.
Three simple cases.... Right...........2001-07-20
Rostnikov is in the doghouse after his adventures of the first two novels in this series. He has a new boss who is, of course, a jerk. The powers that be have claimed his assistants for fairly glamourous cases: Karpo is seeking a weeping sniper and Sascha is trying to locate a car theft ring. Rostnikov is left with the "dregs" - the murder of an 84 year old Jewish man. The only clues -- one of the killers resembles a face in a 60 year old photo from the victim's youth and the killer took a brass candlestick.
Karpo and the sniper is an interesting story with a good ending. Rostnikov gets into the action on the car theft ring - a story that ends with high drama (Kaminsky's screenwriter past comes through). And then, the case of the murder is closed without a solution. Rostnikov, never one to leave things undone, keeps looking in the killing only to unveil a most interesting tale.
Overall, a solid third installment in the series. New readers are encouraged (strongly) to go back to the beginning (Death of a Dissident) as the evolution of the main characters is as much a part of the reading experience as is the solving of the crimes. And why read this series rather that the others? Half of what I like is simply the Moscow setting and learning about everyday life in 1980's Russia. The other half is that the main characters are really growing on me - Rostikov with his grit and intelligence; Karpo the stoic; and Sascha just trying to juggle his wife and mother.

Kaminsky, P 1992 by Recorded Books, Inc., Unabridged, 92107 (6 cassettes/8.75 hours)" "I will not forget,' said Rostnikov to the dead man, placing his head gently on the steps. In the rear of the dark theater a door opened. A square of light showed two figures who had apparently been listening. One of the shadows turned for an instant and faced Rostnikov. It may have been a trick of the distance or the light or his state of mind, but Rostnikov thought the hands of the figure came together in a slow mockery of applause. Then the door closed, and Rostnikov was alone."---from Red Chameleon "Porfiry Rostnikov couldn't let it die. It wasn't just pity that he felt,...two waifs huddled together in a dark, featureless Moscow apartment---a young, beseeching boy and his limping older sister---and just beyond their gaze, behind a closed bathroom door, an irreversible, unspeakable horror. There hadn't been much to go on at first---a bloody corpse, a missing brass candlestick, and an old photograph taken before the Revolution---five men in peasant dress, one of them grinning challengingly at the camera. But like his namesake, the persevering Inspector Rostnikov of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, whose imperturable interrogation of Roskolnikov gave him plenty of reason to sweat, Porfiry couldn't just give a thing up-especially if he was ordered to do so." "Kaminsky works up plenty of sweaty-palmed suspense of the best sort, built out of equal parts of likeable characters and believable dangers."---The Washington Post Book World "Rostinikov is an exceptionally humane man and a man of many facets. He converses knowledgeably about Gogol, Pushkin and Tolstoy, is a champion weightlifter and enjoys reading Ed McBain's 87the Precinct novels."---Chicago Tribune (from back case of cover)

A chronicle of the events that turned the rebellious Jimmy Kirk into Captain James T. Kirk.......2007-06-17
Like so many of the greatest commanders in history, James T. Kirk was a rebellious teenager, driving his Star Fleet father George Kirk to the brink of frustrated parental defeat. In his first attempt to show his son what Star Fleet was all about, Jimmy Kirk experienced the brutality of Kodos' own brand of survival techniques. When Jimmy leads his gang in an attempt to run away on an ocean ship, George tries one last time to alter his son's life course.
Although the mission is designed to be a "milk-run", it turns out to be much more than that. George Kirk, Captain Robert April, Jimmy Kirk and several other Star Fleet members are observing a unique star formation in a small craft when a pirate ship attacks them. They put up a good fight but when they think that they are about to be destroyed, they put Jimmy in a makeshift survival pod and try to send him out of danger. However, Jimmy has other ideas and proceeds to attack the pirate ship and disable them long enough for his father and shipmates to join in the fight. They manage to defeat their opponents, one of which is a boy genius who has somehow managed to develop a new and revolutionary shield technology.
There is a later story intertwined with this one. Years later Kirk is an admiral and the time frame is right after "The Undiscovered Country." The Enterprise is about to be decommissioned when it is forced to answer a distress call from one of the newest models of starships. When they arrive, Kirk finds himself confronting an old nemesis with delusions of godhood.
This book is an excellent glimpse into the troubled teen years of the strong-willed Jimmy Kirk and the circumstances that turned a potential sociopath into one of the finest commanders Star Fleet ever produced.
Best Destiny = Boring!.......2005-07-28
Ok so here we have a book that shows James T. Kirk as a punk kid being a belligerant goof who turns his life around with one dramatic moment. It would be great if it were more believable. There's too much melodrama in this. Yeah he's James T. Kirk but he's not the most influential force in the history of the genre. I thought the action was good but at times dragged out. His interactions with Engsign Veronica Hall were the worst. It's an ok story with some good background. It glosses over his relation with siblings and mother as well.
Star Trek: Best Destiny.......2002-12-06
Star Trek: Best Destiny written by Diane Carey is a flashback novel of James T. Kirk. This book mixes the past with the present in the Trek genre.
James T. Kirk is seen as a teenager wanting to show his father that he can and will be worthy of wearing the Starfleet uniform someday. This is the first adventure we get to read about where James T. Kirk plays a sugnificant role. There is personal danger, self-discovery, and unparalleled adventure.
We read about James T. Kirk about to retire from his long tenure with the fleet. Now, events draw him back to a youthful adventue with his father George and Captain Robert April. A part of the galaxy only left in James Kirk's memory, a world called Faramond, mysterious in nature Kirk takes us back when he was sixteen years old.
Although he was estranged from his father he admired what his father did for him, but Captain Robert April changes James Kirk's life forever. This is a good Father-Father image/ son book. The adventure now only in James' memory they face life or death... but a glimpse of the future sets James T. Kirk on a Trek of his own... best destiny.
Best Destiny Rules@@@.......2002-04-21
Rarely do authors dig into the past of major series characters, but Diane Carey does a magnificent job here! I've read this book dozens of times, and I find something new that I'd missed the time before! The skill with which Carey uses flashbacks to tell the entire story of Kirk's last mission is amazing, and we get one of the best glimces into Kirk's younger years than had ever been presented in print, small, or large screen formats. We also are introduced to several new people that molded Kirk into the best captain in Starfleet, his in-and-out father, Commander George Kirk, and Captain Robert April, the first captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Anyone calling themselves a Trekker should buy this book and read it often!!!!
A good read, James T. as in teenager..........2000-08-08
In all the Star Trek lore that's been written over 30 plus years, it's rare to see books that delve into the past of the primary characters in anything other than alternate realities or brief flashbacks. More of this book takes place in Kirk's teenage years than in the "present" (Kirk's last voyage before the Enterprise "A" gets mothballed). I hate reviews that ruin good books by giving away major plot points, so I'll resist. Overall, the flashback scenes really make the story while the current events are less interesting. The end of the "present" events are anticlimactic compared the the end of the flashback events, but kudos to the Authors for further fleshing out characters from earlier books: Captain Robert April (first Captian of the original Enterprise), Commander George Kirk (Jimmy's father), and Kirk's right hand man Drake (great comic relief). McCoy & Spock sadly are reduced to small roles, but the book is, after all, a story about a young Jimmy Kirk, and in that respect it does an admerable job.

Beautiful royal blue cushioned leather boards embossed in real silver leaf. This series would look great as part of any library, or even as a stand alone coffee table book. It's a great story from the original Star Trek series as well! It takes place shortly after the events chronicled in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, but you won't see this one on TV or at the movies! As James T. Kirk prepares to retire from a long and illustrious Starfleet career, events in a distant part of the Federation draw him back to a part of the galaxy he had last visited as a young man, a mysterious world called Faramond whose name takes Kirk on a journey back to his youth.

Is Your So-Called Good Diet Slowly Killing You?
If you have Syndrome X -- and 60 to 75 million Americans do -- the widely recommended low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet may be the surest route to a heart attack. Now, Gerald Reaven, M.D., the pioneering Stanford University doctor who discovered Syndrome X, explains why:
- Even if your total cholesterol level is perfect, it may not shield you from a heart attack.
- Carbohydrates can be just as harmful as red meat or butter.
- A diet high in "good" fats (as much as 40 percent of calories) is actually better for you.
- The Zone diet, the Atkins diet, and the American Heart Association diet can each be dangerous under certain conditions.
- The failure of insulin, the body's "sugar cop," to process blood sugar is the key to Syndrome X.
- The Syndrome X diet and exercise program will keep you healthy and protect your heart even if you do not suffer from insulin resistance.
Tested in carefully controlled research settings and in practice, the Syndrome X program is safe, effective, and easy to follow.

Avoid Diabetes... Avoid Death... Read Syndrome X!.......2005-10-16
This is the first book review I've ever written... Anywhere! However, if my experience can help anyone, I feel I must write a review on this book.
I am not a good writer! My writing style is a reflection primarily of the writing I do most, research notes. I never have to write papers, so my style is for me alone. I'll try to be concise and to-the-point and still add enough seasoning to give a flavor as to why it was important to me and why I wish I had been exposed to these studies and findings years ago.
First of all, this is not a bathroom book that one can read a couple minutes here and a couple of minutes there. I started reading it on the hour-long drive back from the doctor's office where I got the book while my wife drove. Before we got home I realized that I would need to read it as a textbook and not as a novel! For that reason, I set it aside until I could. I carried it on vacation and to business trips hoping to have time to devote to it... Jury duty provided that time. I was right! It did require reading it as a book! I made many margin notes, underlinings, cross-references, and lists inside the front and back covers. I only regretted not having a computer to take more detailed notes. I'm doing that on the second reading.
When I discovered I had high insulin, I started reading all I could about high insulin, type II and insulin resistance. There is a lot of information... Especially on the Internet... But, much of it disagrees with each other. I look primarily for actual studies and not opinions or guesses. Some of those sites provide good information, charts and diagrams to other sites that can be verified by actual studies... I also like to be able to look at the study. Many times what is written about a study isn't what is actually in the study... Especially government studies. Many government studies are even miss-reported by the government! But that's just me. It's the way I try and weed out good information from junk, realizing that I'll still accept junk at times and reject good, but that's why pencils have erasers... I can always change my conclusions whenever new information shows errors in those conclusions.
The problem with antidotal information is that it may be ignoring key parameters that were never considered and never measured, but may be key to the results observed.
My first physical was during the Vietnam War. My blood test results required a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT). The GTT results were fine. Since that time, occasional blood tests have also resulted in GT test.... Each time, the GTT passed fine. Now, I suffer from what would normally be considered serious diabetic symptoms without being diagnosed with diabetes (even with the new diagnostic guidelines.) Both my blood sugar and A1c tests are below the diabetic guidelines for type II.
"Syndrome X" explains it all! MY next step is not to criticize the parts of the book that were difficult to read, but to put it into practice and see what happens.
Take this review for whatever it might be worth to you... I really don't care! I'm not selling anything. I don't care how many books are sold.
The expert on insulin resistance.......2004-05-09
The lead researcher on HOW too many refined carbs can lead to coronary heart disease. His description of the HOW is quite valuable, if a little repetitive. His prescription for action is adequate with some useful material, but not really his forte. See the reviews of the hardcover version, which has a slightly different title.
The Bible for Insulin Damage.......2003-08-30
This is a great book that will remain the "Classic" long after all others on this subject have faded. It's written by the physician who found Syndrome X and gives straight-up information on the subject of how uncontrolled insulin and glucose levels damage our health. Although there is a wealth of information on the internet, much of it is inaccurate or partially inaccurate, and that's the case with Syndrome X. All the other Syndrome X books that have been written were knock-offs published after this one by authors who knew far less about the subject. What you get in this book is 100% quality information and solutions that you can trust. However, it's not necessarily written for the customer who wants only touch-feely anecdotes; it tells us the real scoop. Reading the medical journals of new research emerging confirms everything in this book, and shows that high insulin levels can cause other horrible diseases besides Syndrome X, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease, such as all these new ones that have been added to the list: colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, sleep breathing disorder, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, impaired cognitive (brain)function, polycystic ovary syndrome, and a couple of others disorders. This book is the best of the bunch.
This book is inaccurate and possibly dangerous. Avoid it!.......2003-05-20
OK, so I'm not an expert. I am a person who has learned about good nutrituion through a lot of comparative research and experimentation. IMHO, this book is -- and this is a mild, technical term -- Hogwash. It is bad science, bad nutrition and, perhaps worst of all, bad writing. Don't waste your money.
Not As Good As I Thought.......2002-04-20
The book was ok, but with all the information at our fingertips on the web and also knowing some things about the heart and other conditions, I felt like I wasted my money except for the diet part of the book. He didn't really list anything that I didn't already know and he didn't give any symptoms, except for tests. I guess you have to go by that, but I just felt let down by the book. I wanted more from it. I know about the chambers of the heart and techniques used to treat heart problems. I just felt all of that could have been left out. I want to know more about the disease and how they came across it and how people's lives are doing now with the diet and things like that. I just felt like he was a doctor giving advice, but it lacked that punch that keeps you wanting to know more. He didn't give a good review on meds and he just didn't sound like a good writer. I felt like he was saying the same thing over and over at times and he just didn't need to explain all the stuff about the heart and how we burn calories and stuff like that. It just seemed redundant. Some people may want to know all of that stuff or they may already know it. I just felt like I was reading a boring book that had things in there that were of not any use to me. I hope I'm not being to harsh, but I just was so let down.
