Book Description
"THE WISEST AND MOST CAPTIVATING NOVEL TAN HAS WRITTEN."--The Boston Sunday Globe
"TRULY MAGICAL . . . UNFORGETTABLE . . . The first-person narrator is Olivia Laguni, and her unrelenting nemesis from childhood on is her half-sister, Kwan Li. . . . It is Kwan's haunting predictions, her implementation of the secret senses, and her linking of the present with the past that cause this novel to shimmer with meaning--and to leave it in the readers mind when the book has long been finished."
--The San Diego Tribune
"HER MOST POLISHED WORK . . . Tan is a wonderful storyteller, and the story's many strands--Olivia's childhood, her courtship and marriage, Kwan's ghost stories and village tales--propel the work to its climactic but bittersweet end." --USA Today
"TAN HAS ONCE MORE PRODUCED A NOVEL WONDERFULLY LIKE A HOLOGRAM: turn it this way and find Chinese-Americans shopping and arguing in San Francisco; turn it that way and the Chinese of Changmian village in 1864 are fleeing into the hills to hide from the rampaging Manchus. . . . THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES doesn't simply return to a world but burrows more deeply into it, following new trails to fresh revelations.
--Newsweek
Customer Reviews:
Superb characterization.......2007-06-19
I've enjoyed all Amy Tan's books, but "The Hundred Secret Senses" kept me reading till dawn. The characterization alone is stunning...truly stunning.
Realistic or magical?.......2007-06-02
I love how I was kept guessing as to whether this book took place in a world where magic is possible or not. The main character doesn't WANT to believe in the supernatural, but it seems to creep into her life via her strange sister. How much of what happens is colored by her perception? What are we to believe? Beautifully crafted story.
Immensely Believable.......2007-04-05
Past meets present in this circular tale of spirituality. The Chinese culture is captivating and real. You'll feel like you're really there.
Touching and Beautiful.......2007-03-20
This book was great to read. I found it to be sad at times and very touching. Very much recommended.
Chinese kisses.......2007-02-25
The book was a wonderful read. Having spent some years in South East Asia and China and having relatives and loyal friends of Chinese decent I can attest that Amy Tan did a good job weaving the past and present into her circle tale. When I was small my relatives decribed themselves as "white/ yellow Russians" instead of Han,s. This was to escape the racism of the white australia policy of the day. The Hundred Secret Senses transported me back to past times and that solid generous gentle feeling which comes from sharing some of one's life with the Chinese. Just loved Tan's Kwan and I have known, lived and worked with a hundred Kwan's. The mannerisms, attitudes to life, work ethic, inescapable fate and the notion perserverence as a duty are all true. Tan,s book truely evoked a hundred secret memories and reconnected me with yin (and yang) ancestors.
Highly recommend this book.

Book Description
Doom Fox is the last in Iceberg Slim's legendary series of underground novels. Written in 1978 and unpublished until now, Doom Fox is a tale of the Los Angeles ghetto that begins just after World War II and spans the next thirty years. In the no-holds-barred tradition of Chester Himes, Doom Fox captures a violent, vivid world of low-riding chippie-catchers, prizefighters, prostitutes, and smooth-talking preachers.
Customer Reviews:
Worth a look mostly because of the author.......2006-11-18
It was Iceberg's last novel; apparently published posthumously. Seems to me to be in an extremely unfinished state; the dialogue is bizarre. Not bizarre in the "ebonics" manner that "Pimp" was in, but dialogue the likes of which nobody really speaks in. I can't tell if he wrote it out in what he considered educated english (in a way it is just that), or his idea was to write the story as a sketch wherin the protagonists have really pronounced argots; later changing it to be more realistic.
While his classic "Pimp" wasn't exactly what you'd call a cheerful book, this one was positively bleak in its misanthropic outlook. As a novel, it is a complete failure, but the depths he plumbs in this one (exploring his misogyny via what is apparently the story of his childhood), and the fact that it is Iceberg Slim's work, make it worth a look.
Doomed To Glory.......2005-08-16
Is the only title I feel adequately descibes my feelings towards Slim's last book
The book is doomed, for nothing this good can help but get co-opted by the Man somewhere down the line. White Power Freaks (and that's a much bigger category than the Klan) will surely rip it off sometime. It's a glorious book wherein the greatest "surprise fighters" are: two women, and one gay guy-- Reba, Dottie, and Pretty Melvin.
Here I'd say I'd surely go along with Deborah and get Peter Muckley's Iceberg Slim: The Life As Art to read as a companion piece to Fox, just to help see how great this work in particular, and Slim in general, truly are. Though, mostly, for me, Lit. Crit. is foolish hype, I go along with Thumper on this one; "truly deep".
When I first read Doom Fox, I simply couldn't get over the brittle, hard writing, every phrase a left jab. Here were all the great Slim types in one compact, "coruscating" volume: the Pimp (and just watch how he burns); the Black Muckety-Muck; the twisted killer cop; the Religious Shark; and, as always, the "bitter sweet ghetto".
The prison scenes are superlative and the Nazis therein are more threatening today than even in Slim's time; now they rule the White House. Melvin is an especially complex character who grows and transforms right along, becoming almost a Malcolm X by story's end. Rebecca and Dottie form the Black (staying) Power matrix.
Poor Kong is doomed by his great heart, but there is glory flashed in the sheer telling of his tale. Doom Fox is the history of African-American experience in the 20th century... (and beyond?) It is a blues masterpiece which, as time will prove, is doomed, like its best characters, to posthumous glory. It is also the best presented, best printed, best proofed, and best rounded out of all Slim's books. Please, read it, even if you do not buy it, Muckley's work ditto.
"Now I really know why he was a legendary PIMP!!!".......2005-08-11
1st I plan on reading this book for a 2nd time, which is sumptin' I have NEVER done w/ any book before. Iceberg has already had me in a trance w/PIMP, Trick Baby, Airtight Willie and me, and the Naked Soul of Iceberg Slim (I'm workin' on reading Mamma Black Widow and Long White Con). Let the trumpets blow and roll out that decadent red carpet, because honey...Doom Fox is like Whoa!!! Yes, there was even litigation saying that this was not soley written by him. I'd have to say, "Are u out your damn mind!!!" This book is filled from cover to cover with a man's life story, ups and downs; however, not our modern day happenings. Containing every emotion, Love, Hatred, Sexual lust, Revenge. Their is even a woman as well, representing this in the story (which I think is great). One of the more pleasant attributes of Slim, is when he wrote w/out any hang-ups and, he literally hands it to you in writing form, saying, "Hey this is what's on the plate it ain't looking to pretty, but u eat every morsel..ya hear?" His mere talent for weaving everything together w/ out it all turning into Cosmic Slop is uncomprehensible. O.K. dammit read the book, 4 get that 1 star rating some multiple personality wrote, and this is simply (cum on paper), but still safe and legal. Enjoy and indulge yourself. Thank You!
I'm Going to Keep It Real Since Most of You Won't.......2005-06-27
Wow. Like, this book got 5-star reviews. Well, let me tell you, this book is BORING. The only part of the book that I liked was the introduction by Ice-T. The book goes downhill from there. The book made me fall asleep a few times, but I mananged to finish reading the entire thing. It was like the time I was reading "Beloved." That book was way too boring and I had to reread sections just to understand what in the world was going on. Thank goodness I had seen the movie before I read the book! Maybe "Doom Fox" should be made into a movie, and then maybe it would more intersting. Michael Clark Duncan could play Joe "Kong" Allen, Terence Howard could play Melvin, Daniel Sunjata could be Felix, Lonette McKee can be Reba, and Snoop Dogg could be Whispering Slim. Since both of these twits like to act, even though they have no skills, Ashanti could be Delphine and Paris Hilton could be Erica. Yeah, the 1st decade of the new millenium can be known for pimp and hustler movies the way the 90s were known for 'hood movies. I'm perplexed as to why almost everyone in the book- except for Joe "Kong" Allen- had green or violet eyes and auborn hair. I don't see too many Black folks looking like that. Anyway, Joe "Kong" Allen was an old fool and that's what he gets for chasing around a harlot. And just because a book is about dopin', shootin', pimpin', hustlin', or whatever, that doesn't make it deep. I guess this book is as "real" as it'll get- REAL boring.
The Very Apex of the Iceberg.......2005-04-18
In many ways, Doom Fox is an update version of Mama Black Widow. Just try to equate the characters there with those here.
The book stays completely within the ghetto and the prison-system here is dealt with as it had not been since Pimp or the Essays of The Naked Soul. That is, it is Robert Beck writing at his very best about what he knows better than any of us. One way of appreciating the real depth and true subtlety of Doom Fox, its overriding concerns and its masterful historical achievement is to read it in conjunction with Peter Muckley's Iceberg Slim: The Life as Art. There, there is even a plot-breakdown neatly compacted into 1 single page. It is good to see Amazon offer both conjointly at discount price. If you were me, you'd snap up the offer.
For me, this is THE VERY BEST of Slim's works. The writing is sure, the action rapid. It shows what Slim could do when not hampered by publishers, that's why it was published so late and posthumously.
The tale of the Allen Family and its generational decline has as a subtext the whole of African American History, together with much of Robert Beck's own history. The burning up, quite literally, of the evil Whispering Slim shows what Iceberg now thought of his old Pimp-self. In the character of Baptiste Rambeau, we find one of the sleaziest villians of all literature.
For all those, like Sapphire, who have accused Slim of misogyny, this is pure rebuttal here, in the characters of Reba and Dorothy, two outstanding resistance ghetto-fighters.
This is the Slim with the revolutionary consciousness first found in Death Wish, but it is a "bitter-sweet" ghetto saga. Unmatched of its kind, Doom Fox is a tour-de-force singing out to the vile ghettos of Today.
Everyone should have a copy. It is, in so many ways, the Apex of the Iceberg.

Book Description
Something very big and very dangerous is swimming in the seas of planet Aqua Minor. It's destroying all of the fish factories and making mincemeat out of all the submarines. So Captain Teggs and the brave crew on the DSS Sauropod set off to investigate.
What do they find? A gigantic liopleurodon has made Aqua Minor its home. At first all the evidence points to him as the culprit behind the mass destruction. But then new evidence is uncovered that shows it couldn't be the liopleurodon. Is another monster lurking beneath the seas as well?

StegTrek - One of a series of excellent 'dinosaurs in space' sci-fi books aimed at preteen boys.......2007-01-21
My son (10) isn't very good at reading, so I read these Astrosaurs books to him at bedtime. He really enjoyed them and so we have bought all of the series (8 books at present) to encourage him to like books as much as his Playstation 2, TV and DVD's. Most books we have are shared with his 12 year old sister, so he appreciated a good book aimed at young boys. The sci-fi stories are quite good (we are Dr Who, StarWars, Dinotopia, and New Captain Scarlet fans) and you get the boys top favourite (dinosaurs) thrown in as well. The only problem with them is that Steve Cole can't write them quick enough
The series follows the space adventures of a troupe of vegetarian dinosaurs (they escaped the meteor hit 50 million years ago by leaving Earth in spaceships). Captain Teggs and his crew, Gypsy, Arx and Iggy are no ordinary dinosaurs - they are Astrosaurs! They fly through space in the Dinosaur Space Service starship, theDSS Sauropod, keeping the peace in the vegetarian sector of the Jurassic Quadrant. They also patrol the neutral VegMeat zone to defend against the inhabitants from the notorious Carnivore Sector. Plus they are explorers, who boldly go where no fern chewing reptile has boldly gone before.
In this book Teggs and Gipsy have been sent to a water planet where a huge monster has been attacking the local fish factories. They have to travel down to the bottom of the sea to investigate, and they soon come under attack themselves. So the book it is suitably tense in places for little ones.
This is the third book of the excellent series. In order the books are Riddle of the raptors, The hatching horror, The seas of doom, The mind swap menace, The skies of fear, The space ghosts, Day of the dino-driods, and The terror bird trap. They are best read in order. My son says 'Like the other books it was cool, I liked the characters and the pictures (the reading books are filled many good line drawing illustrations). I also liked the cut-out cards at the front' (in our UK version, probably not present in the US book)". I would think the books would suit any pre-teen boy older than four, who appreciates space travel (probably up to age 12). I also enjoyed reading them out loud. There are surprisingly few good books aimed squarely at young boys about, so highly recommended. Also try 'The tentacled terror' plus the 'Horrid Henry', 'Seriously silly stories' and the US 'Captain Underpants' series of books.

Poor Mystery, Terrible Fantasy, and A Great Let Down!.......2004-06-03
Unfortunately, both Murder in Cormyr as well as Murder in Halruaa are a major disappointment indeed! Badly written, by what seems to be inexperienced people who not only to have had no previous work or any serious contact with Fantasy (not even to mention the specifics of the Forgotten Realms Campaign World), but writing books-ANY books- in general! Myself, a mystery enthusiast of Arthur Conan Doyle?s and Agatha Christie's work and a Fantasy/Dungeons and Dragons "Fanatic" have no alternative, but to write this negative review in an effort to warn the potential reader of what they are in for. Both these authors should at least have read a Forgotten Realms novel before attempting to write one, and what's more if they did not want to or did not have the ability to write this type of book, they should not even have attempt it. However, since they did, how and why were these books allowed to hit the printing press and then the stores? They discredit themselves (the authors), they discredit TSR, but most importantly they discredit the readers/fans of the Forgotten Realms, especially those who thought that combining Fantasy and Mystery would be a great idea, like myself. From the weak plot, to the bad writing, to the ridiculous choice of names for the characters, to the jokes that fall flat, to the great lack of knowledge regarding Toril, the books fail miserably!
It is very unfortunate that the Murder Series came to an end before the writing of Murder in Ravens Bluff and WotC should reconsider their decision now that years have gone by and maybe resurrect the project, but considering the poor work included in these books I can at least understand why they did so back then. In conclusion, it is with great sadness that I only give two stars to these books since almost all the Forgotten Realms novels that have been written have been more than wonderful-what with RA Salvatore, Elaine Cunningham, Ed Greenwood etc. The books could have been fantastic if the right people or the necessary care had been given during the writing of the stories. A shame really! My advice, read them only after you're done reading all the other Forgotten Realms books and you are still in need of more Toril related material; at least you'll get a slight hint/taste of Faerun.
One of the best books ever.......2000-04-01
This book rules. I read it in about two days, I just couldn't put it down. From mystery to humor its one of the best books in the Forgotten Realms series...too bad WoTC canned the whole mystery series when they bought TSR. I really wish Mureder in Ravens Bluff would have been published since this book and its predessesor Murder in Cormyr were so good. READ IT
wrong description.......2000-02-20
I havn't actually finished this book yet. Do NOT base anything on the above description since it is completely wrong. The main Character is Pryce Covington and HE has ben mistaken for Darlington blade. Just thought any other readers should know this. The entire description is wrong and i'm not even going to coment on them. The five stars is because I'm on page 60 now and so far it has captivated my attention.

This one's a keeper.......2005-08-22
I use bibliotherapy often with child clients. Most I don't refer to again and again. This one I do. It is a great conversation starter for children and adults alike. I think it would make me talk if someone read it to me! It brings up pretty powerful feelings without being heavy or depressing.
A children's book for the child in all of us........2004-07-21
1591471346The story line is simple; the truth concealed within is life changing. It is the story of a boy who was sad and did not want to be sad anymore. So, he devised a plan. His plan was to get rid of everything that made him sad. He methodically gets rid of things as soon as he realizes they make him sad or have the potential to make him sad. Eventually he realizes that getting rid of everything that could make him sad also got rid of everything that made him happy. This is a lesson about facing sadness so that we can also have a happy and fulfilled life. "The Boy Who Didn't Want To Be Sad" is a very highly recommended children's book.
excellent conversation starter.......2004-06-20
My wife Jan and I bought this charming book for our granddaughter, who had heard about it from a friend at school. She has read it to us five or six times in the last two weeks. As grandparents, we've read (and been read) many children's books over the years, but this was the only one that actually sparked a thoughtful discussion about happiness. Dr. Goldblatt must be on to something.
Very moved........2004-06-16
This is a beautiful story, and the illustrations are wonderful. Why have I not heard of Goldblatt before?
The New Shel Silverstein.......2004-06-07
I've looked for other books by this author, but I think this is his only one. That's too bad, because this one packs a wallop. It's a simple story about a boy who gives up everything he loves to avoid feeling saddened by their loss. But his efforts end up producing the very feelings he is trying to escape, because what he gives up also made him happy. I have several friends and family members who've approached life that way, and they're all on anti-depressants now. They should have read this book when they were kids.
