Before Elmore Leonard abandoned westerns to blaze across the pantheon of bestsellerdom with his hip, stylish thrillers, punctuated with dead-pan humor and dialogue worthy of a David Mamet play, he might have written The Hot Kid; it has some of the same crisp pacing and well-defined, if not especially complex, characters that marked his earlier novels. A show-down between Tulsa oil wildcatter and millionaire Oris Belmont and his 18-year-old son, who's attempting to shake him down, says all there is to say about both men:
"I don't know what's wrong with you. You're a nice-looking boy, wear a clean shirt every day, keep your hair combed ... where'd you get your ugly disposition? Your mama blames me for not being around, so then I give you things .. you get in trouble, I get you out. Well, now you've moved on to extortion in your life of crime ... I pay you what you want or you're telling everybody I have a girlfriend?"
Jack Belmont's blackmail scheme doesn't work, but after destroying his father's property, forging checks in his name, kidnapping his mistress, and joining a gang of notorious bank robbers after his release from prison, he encounters another man trying to get out from under his father's large shadow and create his own, bigger one. Deputy U.S. Marshal Carl Webster, who at age 15 shot a man trying to steal his cows and six years later dispenses equal justice to Emmet Long, the leader of Belmont's gang, now has Jack Belmont in his sights. Webster's exploits have earned him even more celebrity than Jack, who dreams of rivaling Pretty Boy Floyd as public enemy number one.
We're in the early 30's here, just as a dust cloud is rolling across the Oklahoma plains--the days of Bonnie and Clyde, when gangsters captured the public attention, and Leonard makes good use of place and time. His minor characters are much more interesting than his protagonists, especially the women, and the writing shows occasional flashes of his trademarked ironic humor. But it's not as cool--or as hot--as even his most dedicated readers are used to, and there's barely a trace of the bizarre plot twists and unlikely coincidences that define his most recent caper novels in this one. --Jane Adams
Customer Reviews:
Best in a Decade.......2007-09-06
A new direction for Elmore Leonard, both as a period story and in the development of a low-life and a lawman. A great read, very spare and a great change from the scammers of the last few books.
Gun Molls, Mobsters & Bank Robbers.......2007-06-20
A new trend could easily start on the heels of this novel of bank robbers, gun molls, and US marshals during the Prohibition era. Worse things could happen. Elmore Leonard could apply his skills to any setting and come out a winner.
The hot kid is US Marshal Carl Webster, son of a pecan farmer with oil rights. Carl first killed a man when he was 15 for trying to steal his cattle. He then went on to make a name for himself killing bank robbers. Carl's nemesis is Jack Belmont, the no-good son of a wealthy banker whose father sent him to prison for blowing up an oil storage tank. Jack is determined to be an outlaw, settling on bank robbing when kidnapping and extortion don't work out. This puts him in Carl Webster's sights, but Jack seems to be in less danger from Carl than Carl is from Jack. After Carl apprehends Jack and sends him to prison, even though he helps him get out, Jack has vowed to shoot him dead the next time they meet.
Typical of Elmore Leonard, the timeline moves in fits and starts with the pace of the story. It's been awhile since I've read one of his books, but picking this up was like sitting down with an old friend who enacts great stories. Leonard's stories are expressed through impressions and dialogue, which is why they translate so well to the silver screen. I particularly liked his portrayals of the prostitutes and gun molls and the lives they were trapped in by circumstances and the men they chose. He also portrays his villains dispassionately, so we can come to our own conclusion, through their actions, that we don't like them, rather than being told we shouldn't.
Elmore Leonard is always a delight to read, and he chose an interesting time and place to set this novel: Tulsa, Oklahoma during Prohibition with a stopover in the wilds of Kansas City. Though the ending was rather abrupt, it still ended well, just not as tightly ironic as his endings used to be (Maximum Bob). As usual, I can only recommend this fine author who has more than earned all his good press.
Bad Western.......2007-05-14
Not sure what all the rave reviews are for. This book reads like a string a shootouts in a bad western. Honestly after the 6th shootout I lost interest and stopped reading.
A mess, but a fun mess.......2007-05-12
Let's start off with what's great about The Hot Kid. First of all, almost all of the characters are all interesting, well sketched and have real depth to them. Particularly Carlos Webster, US Marshal extraodinaire, who is as straight as an arrow but revels in killing criminals. The setting of the American dustbowl during prohibition, is a good one, and Leonard with perfect pulp prose portrays it quite lucidly. You'll feel like you're in the speakeasys and streets of Kansas City with the gangsters and gun molls . As well, the dialogue here is dagger sharp, captures the time period perfectly and jumps off the page.
Despite all that, the story is a mess. It builds up to a payoff that falls flat, feels rushed and is not nearly as inspired as the first two-thirds of the novel. As well, many of the characters, despite being well-sketched, do things completely out of character in service of the plot, a few of them are underdeveloped and unnecessary and there are plot holes you could drive a truck full of whisky through. All in all, a fun but less than memorable read. If you're an Elmore Leonard fan or a fan of prohibition-era gangster stories, it's worth checking out. If you're not, look elsewhere for something light and hard-boiled to read.
yawn.......2007-04-27
"The Hot Kid" only draws when he shoots to kill. Bully for the quick drawing hot kid. We know the bad guy is doomed when he calls the hero a "greaser". The rest of the hot one's career consists of issuing the challenge, plugging bad guys, and having affairs with sleazy gangster molls. The story would have been more believable, and I might have cared more, if the hero was a cowboy having affairs with dance hall girls. The name change from Carlos to Carl may have had some existential symbolism that escaped me. Did Leonard sell this lame rewrite because he had to meet a quota? A big two thumbs down.

Sarah Pribek, a Minneapolis missing persons detective, is under suspicion. Investigated but not yet charged in the arson murder of the man who raped and killed her best friend's daughter, she's protecting the identity of the real perpetrator, even though a zealous prosecutor is closing in and threatening to indict her. With her husband in jail in Wisconsin for a crime related to the same case (only alluded to briefly here, but fully explicated in The 37th Hour, the first in the series featuring Pribek), the detective finds herself involved in two other assignments where the line between justice and the law is also murky. When the eldest daughter of reclusive novelist Hugh Hennessy enlists her aid in finding the twin brother mysteriously sent away by her father several years earlier, Sarah agrees to investigate, even though there's no indication that Aidan Hennessy left his last foster home except of his own volition, and as far as Sarah can detrermine, the 17-year-old has committed no crimes. When the elder Hennessy is felled by a stroke, Sarah finds herself appointed as temporary guardian of his children, at least until Marlinchen, the daughter, comes of age and can be appoointed their guardian and Hugh's conservator. And the more time Sarah spends with the family, the more certain she is that Aidan isn't who he and his siblings think he is, although she's reluctant to add to the family's travails by seeking the evidence to support her hunch.
She's just as hesitant to make an arrest in her other case--that of a charismatic quadriplegic suspected of practicing medicine illegally. Sarah's relationship with Cisco Ruiz is a complex one, and in the telling of it, Compton brings into sharp relief the moral quandaries that challenge her protagonist. This is a well-plotted mystery with characters who resonate in the reader's consciousness long after the last page is turned, intelligently plotted and deftly crfafted. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Jodi Compton’s debut, The 37th Hour, was hailed as “compelling” (San Francisco Chronicle), “intelligent” (New York Times Book Review), and “the debut of a world-class mystery writer” (Denver Post). Now Compton delivers a new novel featuring Detective Sarah Pribek, one of the most singular and complex characters in suspense fiction today.
On the streets of Minneapolis, Sarah has worked everything from vice to missing persons. But six months after the death of a small-town criminal in rural Minnesota, Sarah is still protecting the identity of a killer. And now a zealous D.A.’s investigator has come to town, determined to make an arrest. With her ex-partner half a world away and her husband in prison, only Sarah remains to face the consequences of last fall. Surrounded by colleagues who know her to be the suspect in a murder, Sarah keeps her demons at bay by involving herself in the troubles of strangers. Seventeen-year-old Aidan Hennessy was banished from his family by his father. Now Aidan’s twin sister is desperately searching for the brother she hasn’t seen in years. Although the case is out of Sarah’s jurisdiction, she sees a reflection of herself in the troubled, damaged family, and agrees to investigate.
As she probes into their tangled history, Sarah begins to realize that the mystery of the Hennessys runs deeper than it appears. Then Sarah’s lieutenant gives her a simpler assignment: Track down a doctor rumored to be practicing medicine without a license in a housing project. But in Cicero Ruiz, Sarah finds a tough, wounded survivor whose moral code challenges her own ideas about justice…and whose hard-won life would be destroyed by an arrest.
Now juggling two very different cases, both requiring a delicate balancing act between professional honor and personal feelings, Sarah soon has even more at stake. Caught up in a cat-and-mouse game with the investigator who wants to end her career, crossing one ethical line after another, Sarah increasingly fears that a misstep on her part will end not only in her disgrace, but in the death of one of those she has promised herself to protect.
With its fascinating heroine and its brilliantly interwoven mysteries,
Sympathy Between Humans is storytelling at its finest from one of the most original and daring writers in suspense fiction today.

Couldn't put it down..... a different voice in this genre!.......2006-07-06
I've read both this and "The 37th Hour", and I really, really, like this author. These books have a distinctly different voice to them- I read a lot of mysteries, thrillers, suspense, police procedurals, etc., and after a while, you can pretty much guess what will happen every step of the way. Not with these books, though- and the lead character is very well written, too. No cliches here, and I couldn't put them down. I'll be anxiously awaiting the next installment!
Outstanding.......2005-08-27
The story doesn't include just one story line, it has several occuring at once. This kept my interesting going. I couldn't put the book down. I highly recommend
Gripping.......2005-07-27
I wrote a lukewarm review of Jodi Compton's first novel, The 37th Hour, which I felt was well written but light on plot. I'm happy to say this sequel is a vast improvement. With her dreary husband Shiloh now banged up (which, for those of you who don't know, is English slang for in prison) Sarah has become a much more interesting and less introverted character. She doesn't do a huge amount of detection but the three different storylines are engrossing and thought-provoking. I'm looking forward to the third in the series, although I have a horrible suspicion that Shiloh will reappear.
Even better than her first novel..........2005-05-29
"Sympathy Between Humans" cuts to the bone of police work. Hennepin County Sheriff's Deputy Sarah Pribek has more on her plate than she can deal with:
Her husband, Mike Shiloh, is in jail in Wisconsin for stealing a car which he was going to use in the commission of a revenge murder "Shorty" who'd raped and killed a friend's (and Sarah's former partner's) teenage daughter.
Sarah herself is under suspicion of actually killing "Shorty."
Despite not being the motherly type, Sarah's gotten guardianship of a family of five children whose famous author father is incapacitated by a stroke. Her first exposure to the family was when Marlinchen, the eldest daughter, came to Sarah to help her find her missing brother, who'd been given away by their father to a family friend in Georgia. Marlinchen's brother, Aidan, eventually shows up and the mystery around him grows stronger. The family is not what they seem and the further she digs, the more dark secrets she uncovers.
Finally, she's asked to investigate an unlicensed physician operating out of the local housing projects. Can she actually bust a man who turns out to be doing so much good in the projects?
Sarah's choices change the destiny of several people, including her own. Sarah's going to have to face some ugly parts of her past--and potentially troublesome future in the next installations of her series.
What I like most about Jodi Compton's work is that it's very realistic police procedural. No one doing any kind of casework gets things done in a linear fashion. Deputy Pribek is constantly shifting from one hot issue to another with various incidentals thrown in.
'Sympathy Between Humans" is a tough book to read, but a strongly impressive one. Jodi Compton is definitely an author to watch in the future.
A somewhat disappointing follow up..........2005-04-23
I found this to be a disappointing follow up to Jodi Compton's previous work "The 37th Hour." For some reason, both main and supporting characters seemed detached. The story began with Sarah diving into a river to save someone who had fallen in. For the balance of the book, however, Sarah seems to be "going through the motions," disconnected from those closest to her, as she attempts to detach from the emotional impact of her choices. It was a passivity that didn't ring true for me. I hope that Compton's next book in this series will allow Sarah to bounce back from the troubles experienced in this book.

Too Much Detail Burdens Story.......2006-04-19
I read this book before the 37th Hour and thought, "Oh, no. I needed to read the first book to understand the story of why her husband, Shiloh, is in prison and 'Shorty's' story and subsequent murder."
Too much detail (about any and every thing) interferred with the basic plot line. And all those flashbacks to the night of Shorty's murder and why Sarah was protecting the real murderer made ME paranoid. I can understand Sarah' jitters.
And, I don't think a cop in trouble with her own dept. and under suspicion of murder would further jeopardize her career by becoming intimately involved with a suspect that her Lt. wants her to investigate, do you?
I gave the book 3 stars because this is the author's 2nd book. Compton had time and the learning experience to address: 1) too many details on plot, subplots, and characters 2) better cohesion of stories within the story. Cut 1/3 and you'd have a 4 star book because I really did like the protagonist, Sarah.

A TAUT, VITAL READING.......2005-03-22
Acting teacher Marie St. Clair gives a taut, vital reading to the second of the Pribek novels by Jodi Compton. Many impressed with Compton's first work will remember that Sarah Pribek is a Minneapolis detective who gives no quarter. Yet, she does have a soft side although she keeps it well hidden. And, she's given to introspection, this time out examining her code of behavior and even the law that she's called upon to enforce.
She takes a teenager searching for her lost brother under her wing, and investigates a man accused of practicing medicine without a license in a housing project. What she finds is a complicated individual confined to a wheelchair who brings healing to those in the tenement. She's forced to wonder whether his actions, which may be found illegal, are really immoral.
Along the way Pribek finds herself drawn to the teenager and her troubled family, while trying to avoid authorities who would take her badge away.
Listeners will feel both sympathy and empathy for a street smart heroine who tries to solve the world's problems as well as her own.

With a diagnosis of colon cancer, George Malkmus launched an intensive biblical and scientific search to find out why he, a Christian, got sickand to possibly find an alternative treatment to the medical profession's usually unsuccessful ones.
Why Christians Get Sick by George Malkmus, is the most important book Christians can read, after the Bible. It delves into the questions of why we get sick, and provides the Biblical answers. With more than 150 Bible verses, this book clearly shows how we can avoid sickness and disease and experience superior health through a natural diet and lifestyle. People the world over have been transformed by the truth of the teachings found in this book.

Unfounded claims!.......2007-05-14
A person with no scientific or nutritional background, by being a pastor decided to make claims about food and its consequence to the human body....very shallow and broad statements are made, and this books is not really much help to anyone trying to change their lifestyle and be more healthy! It's actually annoying, as it takes so much time slamming all the bad stuff, and some good stuff the author considers bad....instead of talking more about all that we (christians or not) don't do enough of...that's why we get sick....Mr Malkmus...I'm not sure you're an authority in nutrition and health to write this or any book about these topics!
Why People Get Sick of Christians.......2006-12-24
This review is of the title only. I did not read the book, will not read the book, am completely put off by the title and can not believe that a professed "Christian" believes that he knows what makes Christians sick. One could make any number of strong cases for good health through proper nutrition, but the unmitigated gall of anyone who professes to KNOW the will of God in relation to why Christians (only Christians) get sick is evidence of a sickness of another type. I do not profess to have the education, knowledge or life experience to support that claim, just a gut feeling that no one, particularly a professed Christian, has the right to judge why any other person, let alone a Christian, gets sick. What cloud did you fall off of Mr. Malkmus.
Being raised Christian and having faith in the fundamentals of the teachings of Christ, I worry when ever any person supposes that they have the knowledge of God to help me do what they KNOW is right for me, my body or my spirit. At best you may have an opinion and to that I will listen. To boldly present one's self as having the fundamental knowledge to write a book titled, "Why Christians Get Sick" is reason alone for me to run the other way. No doubt there are glimmers of truth, possibly even oceans of knowledge between the covers of this book, but anyone knowing why ... exactly why ... Christians get sick ... Mr. Malkums, your elevated presumption of your own Christian values is what makes me sick.
My five-star review (from 2000) has changed to one star (in 2006)........2006-05-15
It may not be "easy" to admit this, but I must. My perspective has changed...
I wrote a five-star review for this book in 2000 ("A Bombshell...," etc.), and I am now older and wiser (I was about 18 when I wrote it). Experience and research has taught me vast amounts about human nutrition and the human body. I now realize that many of the statements I made in that review do not contain 100% percent truth, to state it mildly. When it comes to nutrition, "100% truth" is a work-in-progress figure that may only be reached on an individualized basis, anyway. After all, every human being has a different body as well as a different medical and nutritional history.
In order to enrich people with wisdom and insights I have acquired over the past years, I would like to refer individuals to the Weston A. Price Foundation (an Internet search for their official site will illuminate you with its rational, intelligent, and mind-opening nutritional insights). I realize that healthy, organic beef, chicken, and other sources of protein and animal fat are very important for the growth and health of human cells. The bad fats, believe it or not, are mostly polyunsaturated fats (which may cause cancer and trigger weight gain) and, of course, hydrogenated fats (trans fats), which cause heart disease. I want to state emphatically that saturated fat and cholesterol are HEALTHY nutrients (both are indispensable nutrients for the growth and repair of cell structures and membranes, and, of course, the brain).
In addition, the heart runs predominantly on energy from fats. I know that some vegans/vegetarians following a diet similar to the one in this book began to experience heart palpitations, muscle wasting, and scattered and foggy thinking after a while. Such a diet does not supply optimal nutrients for brain, muscle, and heart health. Also, animal sources such as beef are incredibly important for the form of iron which the body most-easily absorbs (unlike the harder-to-digest iron from plant sources). I know that some following this book's diet began to experience anemia, caused, in part, by iron deficiency. In addition, optimal forms of many other nutrients such as vitamin A and vitamin B12 (of course) are virtually unavailable outside of the animal kingdom.
Vegan or vegetarian diets are almost always high-carbohydrate, low-protein, low-fat diets, which have been shown to be very unhealthy in the long term and devoid of nutrients for the above-mentioned body systems. Instead, a diet composed of high fat, high protein, and a moderate amount of unrefined (preferably fruit-and-vegetable-based) carbohydrates is ideal for most people (that is, if it contains protein and fat from naturally-raised or organic animal sources). In addition, coconut oil is a highly nourishing medium-chain saturated fat which has nourished people and helped them to thrive for thousands of years.
The great energy gains and improved health that initially manifest with this book's vegan diet are almost always short-term phenomena caused by the removal of junk food and refined, industrialized carbohydrates from the diet-and the inclusion of healthy plant nutrients. However, once this detox period is over, which takes no longer than a couple months (at the most) to complete, deficiency diseases and muscle wasting begin to set in. I wouldn't even suggest this diet for detoxification purposes, for the risk of deficiency is simply too great. I suspect that over eighty percent of the glowing testimonials for a diet such as this are written within the first couple months (or weeks) of its adoption. After a while, many people intuitively move back to animal proteins and fats, because their brain is physically screaming out for them on a biological-not just a psychological-level.
Please forgive my earlier review. From my current privileged perspective I regret ever having written it. In some ways I feel like a totally different person from the one who exhibited the "think-I-know-it-all" attitude which was expressed when I wrote that review. Again, my perspective has changed drastically and has advanced considerably. In other words, I'm thankful that I no longer adhere to the sub-optimal (to put it politely) ideas in this book.
Please, I encourage you to check out the Weston A. Price Foundation. Their nutritional and dietary advice is a quantum leap ahead of information such as this. I criticize much of Rev. Malkmus' message, and I hope he is well intentioned. After all, I humbly believe I was well intentioned when I wrote my old five-star review all those years back.
Thanks for reading.
For shame...........2005-11-11
Anyone with the smallest bit of sense knows that *true* Christians never get sick. If this gentleman was ever really sick, then he simply did not read his bible enough or he had a lack of faith. Furthermore, if you just read Dr. Don Colbert's book about what Jesus ate and cooked (even while on the cross), then this should never pose a problem. But, there's always the possibility that, even if you do have a lack of faith, or are not a real Christian, just make sure that before you finally kick the bucket, you pray to God to heal you, say you're sorry and promise to go to church, say you belive in Him, change your wicked ways, and soon you'll be dancing in the sunshine. That always works.

I just saw Jesus in a vision and He told me that he wants you to send all your money to George H. Malkmus so he can write more books to teach all of you to be healthy so the Messiah can delay dealing with your idiotic spirits in heaven.

Product Description
If you want to be healed - this book was written for you. When people are sick - they search for healing in any place that they can find it. This book is the result of the authors' quest for answers to the age old questions "Why do we get sick?" and "How do we get healed". Powerful supernatural forces are at the origins and roots of physical, emotional and psychological disorders and often play conflicting roles in our gaining freedom and healing. Supernatural Health, Do You Want To Be Healed? provides comprehensive insights into the crucial issues of Why we get sick and How we are healed. These insights result from shining the light of Gods Truth through his word onto mans health issues and on the means available to him for attaining the wholeness that God designed us to enjoy.
The authors draw upon the experience of many contributors who minister healing and deliverance to thousands of people from diverse walks of life who have gained freedom from all manner of disease. These insights provide a foundation for understanding the causes of illnesses and also the means for gaining the widespread healing and wholeness that fueled the explosive growth of the First Century Church. They also show how ungodly and unhealthy religion and misguided reliance upon flawed approaches of modern healthcare reject Gods love, truth, and healing for man who is the centerpiece of His Creation.
