Bekker back for a Rematch.......2007-09-17
Taking place approximately 3 months after the events in "Eyes of Prey" have ended, we find Bekker about to have his sentence handed down and Lucas at loose ends. However, unlike Lucas, Bekker has a plan - and he uses it to escape.
At first everyone thinks that Bekker is after Lucas, but as time goes by and nothing happens, everyone relaxes. However, one day Lily Rothenburg (last seen in "Shadow Prey (Lucas Davenport Mysteries)") comes to Minneapolis to ask Lucas to come back to New York City. They believe Bekker has holed up there and is killing people and sending out bizarre quasi-scientific documents about his experiences and experiments. As a side project, Lily tells Lucas that there appears to be a vigilante group within the police department and she would like his help in shutting it down.
Full of twists and turns, this is a satisfying read for anyone who is a fan of the police procedural/thriller genre.
Just Okay.......2007-05-07
SILENT PREY is the fourth book in the "Lucas Davenport" series, and I thought it was a worthwhile read. This novel is an unofficial sequel to EYES OF PREY, and features the same serial killer villain, who breaks out of prison to terrorize New York. So my first piece of advice is to read EYES OF PREY before reading this novel.
This book is well written, but I thought there was too much plot. Not only is Davenport on the trail of a serial killer, but he's also after a group of police vigilantes known as the "Robin Hoods." The vigilante plot is convoluted and complex, and I had some problems keeping all the names and plotlines straight. The serial killer stuff is essentially a retread of what you read in EYES OF PREY -- the killer pretty much thinks and acts the same way as he did in the prior book. So there's nothing new or original here.
Sandford's a fine writer, but I thought this effort was a relative disappointment compared to some of his other Prey books. This novel is a decent entertainment, but I think there are much better crime novels out there.
Not the greatest, but nothing really to complain about.......2006-11-13
"Silent Prey" was a solid if unspectacular read. I guess I was a little disappointed that the complexity and richness promised by the set up, where two major plotlines are set in motion, didn't actually come about. Rather, you get a pretty good serial killer plotline (Lucas Davenport's rematch with the psychotic physician Michael Bekker) and a sketchy, not-often-mentioned secondary plot involving police vigilantes. This second plot was also a little gimmicky, relying on 11th hour "aha!" moments in Davenport's head as he pieces together the little details he's accumulated over the course of the story. Not bad stuff, mind you, but I guess I prefer more operatic, sweeping Davenport moments rather than the Sherlock Holmes-style deduction scenes on hand here.
Another quibble: The previous novel, "Eyes of Prey", had a terrific final-page revelation about one of the series major supporting players, so I quickly picked up this next installment to see how Lucas would deal with this person in light of the information he now had about the character. But "Silent Prey" deals only briefly with the issue, and not in the meaty fashion I was waiting for. Oh well, there's always the next book.
To conclude with some of the story's strengths, I once again enjoyed the cop banter (though Lucas is technically only a consultant to the cops this time out), the action scenes, the clever surprises (especially in the Bekker storyline) and the big confrontations. And Lucas' passionate yet troubled interaction with the fairer sex remains compelling.
Perhaps I'll give Lucas Davenport and John Sandford a bit of a break before moving on in this series, as maybe it's a little unfair of me to dive right into each installment with big expectations. So I think I'll first let another thriller writer or two entertain me before heading back to this series to check out "Winter Prey". But I will be back.
enjoyable read.......2006-07-28
I discovered John Sandford's novels years ago and I am a huge fan. The Prey novels are a fast paced, enjoyable read. I love to read them while laying by the pool. For those of you looking for a thought provoking book, this isn't the way to go. If you are looking for a fun read, I highly recommend this series. A warning to those of you offended by profanity, Sandford uses a lot of it.
Bekker will make your skin crawl. I loved this book!.......2005-11-28
If you like creepy and scary you will love this! This and Eyes of Prey have been my favorite so far!

Book Description
Irene Adler is the beautiful opera singer who bested the best detective in the world, the only woman to ever outwit Sherlock Holmes. She has spent years in self-imposed exile in Europe, in an attempt to reinvent herself and create a new life, because she cannot remember the old one. But now circumstances have forced this diva-turned-detective to investigate a past she doesn't remember--on her home ground. Daredevil reporter Nelly Bly has lured Irene, her faithful chronicler and British parson's daughter Nell Huxleigh, and Holmes himself to America, offering information regarding Irene's parentage. New York City in 1889 proved to be both fascinating and perilous for Irene, and Nelly Bly's information was more harmful than helpful. Because now Irene and her allies--and enemies--must race to follow a deadly trail of hidden personal and political history back in time to the days of the California gold rush, thirty years earlier. They are pursuing the complex and contradictory life story of one of the most notorious women of the nineteenth century, and before the intrigue-ridden quest is over, Irene and Nell will uncover murderous international political conspiracies, lost treasure, and finally.... the full, shocking secret of Irene's birth.

Another Irene Adler page-turner.......2007-10-02
This eighth book in the series begins where book seven left off - in New York City in the late summer of 1889. Irene and the faithfull Penelope are on a mission to discover just who Irene's mother really was. There are a lot of other familiar people in New York with them - Nelly Bly, Quentin Stanhope, and of course Sherlock Holmes. As these two intrepid women are trying to unearth some historical data that will aid in identifying Irene's mother, they stumble upon a dangerous plot that puts both their lives at risk. With the help of the other people mentioned above, they manage to solve the case and find a lost treasure to boot. These books are extremely well-written, and there is a nice mix of real-live people in them just to keep them interesting. I like Ms. Douglas' take on true hisorical happenings and real historical people.
Enjoyed this latest install of the Irene Adler series.......2007-03-15
Again Ms. Douglas has entertained me with this period series of the Opera Diva Irene Adler and her ever present sidekick Nell. Although the only think tiring is the constant "primness and prudishness" of Nell. I think she could evolve a bit more as the novels have unfolded. Maybe if there is another in the series, she will become less introverted in her thinking.
Spider Dance takes up where Irene's quest in Femme Fatale began, searching for her roots. Sherlock Holmes, Nelly Bly and Of course Quentin Stanhope all plays pars in this on going mystery.
The characters remain true to their century and Ms. Douglas has done her research yet again on the authenticity brought to the early period of NYC.
The Long Winded Mystery.......2006-07-07
When I first picked up this Sherlock and Irene mystery I flipped to the back and realized the novel was over 450 pages. Unfortunately the last 50 to 75 pages were unneccessary. The mystery was already sustantially solved and I kept waiting for another surprise to occur, but it never did. On top of this, as a Sherlock Holmes reader, I like to be able to try to solve the mystery before the ending. In this book it was virtually impossible because the crimes are being commited by characters barely revealed during the story. It is as though the author provided a great cast of possibilities and then pull the impossible out of a hat.
The best part of the book was the intertwined cast of characters thrust into a historical setting. The plot circulated from one cast member to another, both past and present - each one telling a part of the story from their perspective.
Is it worth the read? Yes. Could the mystery have a better and shorter conclusion? Definitely.
Well as usual........2006-07-01
Ms. Douglas as usual writes a readable well paced though a bit too long novel. Her character are well drawn and interesting.
Rereadable Books Well Worth The Price.......2005-10-11
I've just discovered this Irene Adler/Holmes series and I've read 5 of the 8 books as of 2005, and can hardly wait to read more.
Carole Nelson Douglas translates the prose style of Arthur Conan Doyle's day into the modern era with as much elegance as found in the BBC productions of Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett. I hear Jeremy Brett in every word of Holmes dialogue in these novels.
As the fans of a television show will detail events going on offstage during an episode, Douglas shows us details of Holmes' investigations that would not have seemed pertinent to Conan Doyle as he wrote -- but he might well have been thinking of them. Douglas twangs every Holmsian heartstring with her deft expansion of the Doyle tales.
There is one difference though. Douglas shows us a 21st Century woman in Irene Adler, a woman truly with A Soul of Steel, (as the novel Irene At Large will be retitled with its December 2005 release). This is a woman Doyle could never have written and his readers probably would not have accepted.
But to us, Adler's biography makes her attitude plausible. We can easily believe she bested Sherlock Holmes more than once.
Even if you've never read any Sherlock Holmes -- read the Irene Adler novels.
Spider Dance is very special though. It has come out at the same time that Laurie R. King's new Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes novel Locked Rooms has appeared.
The two novels both focus on an investigation into a dark childhood hidden behind trauma induced blocks. Both are written with precision insight into human psychology. There is much to learn from each of these novels alone, but read in tandem they can be incredibly illuminating.
Mary Russell is searching for the traumatic events of her childhood in San Francisco during the 1906 earthquake, and Irene Adler is investigating her lost childhood memories also starting in California, but during the Gold Rush.
There all similarity ceases, but both novels are 5 star, top notch entries into the Holmes apocrypha.
Here is the list of titles to date for the Irene Adler/Holmes series:
Good Night, Mr. Holmes; The Adventuress; A Soul of Steel which will be a re-titling of Irene At Large due out in December 2005. Then comes Another Scandal in Bohemia; Chapel Noir and its direct sequel, Castle Rouge, then Femme Fatale and the direct sequel Spider Dance.
These are all thick books, about 400 pages each with reasonable size print -- lots of words for the money and all of them definitely worth the price.

After inquiring as to how they can help, the alien instructs the boys on just what to do. Although astonished at his bazaar instructions on how to help heal him, the boys agree and do as he asked; after the 24th hour of administering aid and to the boys' astonishment, the alien is restored to health. Best Book Ever on Essential Fats.......2004-12-29
This is the definitely the best book available on this topic - avoid all others because they aren't any informative than a brochure (I've bought them all).
He presents highly specific information while still not getting too academic.
One caveat: you certainly don't have to get his outrageously expensive fish oil products. I get the Natural Factor's Dr. Murray fish oil from either iherb.com, vitaminlife.com, or www.thdv.com. I also get 1/3 of my daily fish oil from puritan's pride (consumerlab.com says they're free of all toxins)
In general, he gets a little too paranoid about contaminants. Check out consumerlab.com for acceptable products.
Good Luck!
I am a trained weightloss counselor and teach the Zone.......2003-09-01
The OmegaRXZone is an excellent source of information on Omega 3 Fish Oil and what it may do to improve your health, both mentally and physically. A tremendous amount of studies on Omega 3 are being done and many more that have been completed. Sear's OmegaRxZone gives you a summary of many of the already completed research projects in simple language that the layman can understand rather than searching through medical articles that usually go way over our heads. The book suggests that large doses of the oil may may improve several major health problems that Americans are suffering with. Taking Omega 3, eating within " Zone " guidelines, a little walking and staying away from partially hydrogenated fats has turned the lives and health of many of my clients around. The book is a sales pitch for Sear's Oil because it is purer than most other company's Omega 3, an important factor as the oceans become more polluted. It is also a pitch for the Zone Nutrition program, which is probably the safest and one of the least restraining weight loss programs out there. As long as the salesman is selling a great product it is worth " the listen. " My only relationship to Sears is that I believe in his program and feel he is doing what he can to get America healthy again. This book is for #1. Nutrition buffs, #2. People who would like to be educated about the good effects that the right combination of foods and Omega 3 can have on your body, #3. Adults with health problems such as Heart Disease, Arthritis, Cancer and Neurological problems.
Good Info and also self-serving.......2003-08-29
My wife always brought home and tried several different "diet" books. I was (and still am) skeptical of most. Then, coincidentally on the same day I came home from the doctor with a Cholesterol reading of 285, she brought home from work (library) a copy of this book. I read it. First one made some sense in terms of balanced eating lifestyle. In retrospect, I see now it is all his old stuff + High grade fish oil. But for a first timer, it was helpful. There are, as I found out later, plenty of info on Fish oil. But the Balanced, lo-grain diet was most helpful, and avaiulable in the other books. And one can get a good quality Fish oil (Dr. Murrays RX Omega from iherb.com) at a real reasonable price.
After being in the ZONE for 4 months and taking Fish Oil, my Total cholesterol dropped to 204! And my weight dropped 25 lbs!
It really works!.......2003-08-26
This is a great book for the lay reader. It introduces one to a set of difficult concepts without ever talking down to you but not requiring you to get a degree in biochemistry before reading it. There is a wealth of references to studies done by major universities around the world which is really appreciated. I started using the Zone Dietary protocols in 1995 when his first book was published, Enter the Zone. It worked just as he said it would. Over the last two years I've strayed and gained about 10 lbs of unwanted body fat. Having recently gotten myself reorganized, I've started again and not only has the fat just melted off, but my BP has lowered. I've also started taking the Omega3 and can tell a difference. There are other books on Omega3 but Sears has a way of dealing with the subject that gives one the sense of talking to a family member about the stars: he's right there and present and witty and smart. I only wish I'd known about Omega3 years ago. It, too, works. And what in this day of endless infomercials is more fascinating than to find something that works just as its promoter says it will???
My only criticism of the book is in the editing and proof reading. The publishers should be horse whipped.
This book is brilliant.......2003-06-09
His writing style is very clear and easy to follow. Or at least it was for me, since I am trained as a Chemist.
It was nice that he explained some very basic details that are missed when people get stuck in their fad diets.
1. Rebuffs the Atkins diet (high protein, high fat, low carbohydrates) as being metabolically unbalanced. And explains WHY.
2. Makes a clear distinction between "good" and "bad" carbohydrates. Fruit and vegetables ARE carbs, but they are generally "good." But even among them, some fit into the category of "bad." (Corn, potatoes, mangos).
3. Points out the regulating what you eat consistently (i.e., at each meal) is a better way to go than going on six week diets. There is no way to lose weight but by eating right.
4. Shows the *detailed references* upon which his reasoning is based. And demonstrates how his diet was tested and survived the authentication process in other studies.
5. Explains some things that are often overlooked: A. The obstructive bureaucracy involved in the FDAs assignment of categories to foods and the resulting slowness of change of conventional diets (The FDA is the reason that drugs cost so much in the US, in spite of what some of these babbling neo-hippie protestors would have us believe about "corporate greed.") ; B. The fact that humans are eating higher levels of foods that were actually not available to use 100,000 years ago when people were essentially the same as now, but with different diets. We were actually not evolved to eat such things as we are now; C. Debunks some of the common myths about exercising and then eating *whatever* after that will undo all that you've just done.
6. Gives the Reader's Digest version of the behavior of the body under abnormal circumstances (excess insulin production, etc.)
His writing style is also fabulously easy to read, and the book is set up in such a way that you can find the papers to get more detailed discussions of some facts of which he gives the Reader's Digest version in the passages.
Some aspects may be too technical for people who don't have any background in science. And in that case, then you can get "Entering The Zone" and it will tell you essentially the same things as this book does, without the emphasis on high dose fish oil.
I'm sure that Dr. Sears has made a lot of money on this book. It's Stephen Covey revisited-- Packaging old wine in new bottles and making a mint off of it.

One of the most important Medical finds in Nutrition!.......2007-09-15
I have survived a most certain terminal cancer. In fact the MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston Texas, says that I'm the only one to have survived in the whole world.
But, as an aftermath, I have severe chronic pain because my brain has rewired itself due to the horrible pain I went through fighting the cancer. The condition is referred to as the Gate Theory. It now can be seen on MRI's. It took me 6-months to find the right doctor to treat it. He's been a pain specialist for 17 years and belongs to a group of doctors who rely on "MD Evidenced Nutrition" to understand what "natural" things work.
He put me on a heavy dose of Morphine to counter the pain, but he also put me on Fish Oil, not just any fish oil, but the oil referred to in this book, and I started thinking better and have taken on some minor work as a result. It's almost been a miracle.
Long_chain-fatty-acid-3, pharmaceutical grade, has done wonders. Because of this book I now understand why.
Many doctors assisted Dr. Sears in the writing of this book so that civilians, like me, can understand it. It's not a "fad" book at all. Just look in the back and you will see over 100 pages of clinical references backing up what Dr. Sears states in the book.
It's a must have to stay well and a must have to survive a serious illness.
excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production.......2007-02-01
The Omega Rx Zone, by Barry Sears is an excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production. Dr. Sears successfully translated volumes of leading edge biochemical research into an explanation non-researchers can comprehend, with some sustained effort. Other books explain the fundamental Omega 6/Omega 3 essential fatty imbalance, but most fail to explain how increased Eicosapentanoic Acid (EPA) can inhibit excess inflammatory prostaglandin production, by down regulation of the 5 delta desaturase enzyme. In addition Dr. Sears explains how decreasing Arachidonic Acid levels reduces production of numerous inflammatory leukotrienes, produced by LOX 5 and LOX 15. More importantly, Sears explains how increasing EPA and Decosahexanoic Acid (DHA) can dramatically reduce symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder, Depression, Osteoarthritis, Emphysema, Alzheimers Disease, High Blood Pressure, Atherosclerosis and other disorders. Sears provides many anonymous case histories illustrating patient improvements with high dose, pharmaceutically distilled fish oil. Sears also explains cultural variations in essential fatty acid intake which correlate with depression and suicide rates. The Omega Rx Zone is a surprisingly readable explanation of some complex biochemistry and immunology.

Excellent omega-3 research.......2006-01-08
This book gives a complete and easy to understand of the complex way in which the EPA&DHA long-chain fatty acids influence the hormonal system, and how their lack in the diet affects the body. The author explains why eating fish is not the best way to get omega-3's, mainly because of the heavy chemicals that fish accumulate in their tissues. He describes the differences between different types of fish oil and why (in his opinion) pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is the best way to supplement omega-3. He explains which blood test will tell you how healthy you are.
There is also a very interesting hypothesis on how a diet rich in omega-3 helped the development of the human brain in its early stages of evolution.
There are detalied explanations of how diseases such as cancer and auto-immune illnesses are related to long-chain omega-3's. The author explains how "silent" (cell) inflammation is the cause of many (if not most) major diseases today, especially chronic conditions.
There are explanations of the relationship between omega-3's and emotional well-being, as well as how they improve mental abilities.
As a sidenote, apparently there is currently only one brand on the market that satisfies the author's standards. They have a comparison table on their website showing how their brand offers the most omega-3 per dollar (to convince that it is worth the high price)--but they only compare with certain brands--and I know of at least another highly respected fish oil brand that offers even more omega-3's for half the price. So the only argument left is that pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is completely free of contaminants, whereas other types of oil are not. This argument is in my opinion not very strong, because there are enough brands (such as the one I was talking about before) that have levels of contaminants so small that they are not detectable in a lab--therefore which are really of negligible risk (compared for instance with the toxic substances found in our tap water).
Nevertheless, the in-depth analysis on the remarkably positive effects of EPA&DHA's on health is excellent, and I highly recommend this book.

Breakfast of egg whites!.......2005-01-30
No thanks!
Here we go again with saying that eggs are bad for you. Eggs have so many good things in them, especially the yolks. My brother gave them up and his steak and then died of pancreatic cancer.
Dr Sears says the only fats that are good for you are olive oil, some nuts (macadamia, almonds, and cashews), and avocados.
I'm sorry, but eggs are the most natural food in the world. All kinds of animals eat them and they don't leave the yolks and just eat the whites. Balderdash!
No cheese, milk, etc, no breads, pasta, rice.
Not much left is there.
I agreed with him on the trans fats (hydrogenated oils) which by the way are in almost every packaged food, and I agreed with him on the omega 6 fats, but otherwise this is just a diet that no one could stay on. He focuses also on calorie restriction but then says you will never be hungry on his plan. Yeah, right.
I read "Sugar Busters" and it says the same thing but it focuses on insulin levels which is what is really making Americans fat.
A leader in nutritional medicine.......2003-11-26
It saddens me that such a great book gets criticised because the author sells the product promoted in the book. What else is he supposed to do if he researches a specialist field, recognises the tremendous value of a product, develops it and tells people about it in his book? After reading this book in order to review it for Positive Health Magazine (UK), I would rank it in the top ten most educational books on nutritional therapy and medicine. Barry Sears may be making a good income from his metabolic discoveries, but I believe that is because they are important breakthrough discoveries, not because of marketing hype. Having said that, he is a scientist, not a holistic nutritionist, so some people may need to use this book's information as part of a broader program in order to get the best health results.

medical & health benefits of pharmaceutical fish oil.......2003-08-23
A year ago tomorrow, I walked into a bookstore in desperation and bought all the books on nutrition I could find that made sense to me. Within days, I exchanged most of them for the Zone books. Within 2 weeks of practicising the Zone haphazardly, I got spectacular results on my blood cholesterol test, the first encouraging results in five years. I have continued in the "Zone lifestyle" faithfully while reading perhaps 70 nutrition and exercise books in the meantime.
The OmegaRxZone represents the most recent in the series of Zone books, containing the most up-to-date information on Dr. Sears' dietary technology. It might be called, the "Zone with emphasis on pharmaceutical grade fish oil and recovery from illness."
Pharmaceutical grade fish oil can be taken in bigger quantities than health store grade fish oil. There is now an EPA/AA test (see yourfuturehealth.com) for $260 that can show whether bigger quantities of fish oil can help your health condition.
Dr. Sears has taken criticism from those who say they are completely healthy already. They argue that his assertions about the role of EPA and DHA in preserving health are unproven. Meanwhile, many desperately sick people have regained their health and think otherwise. The August 2003 newsletter on drsears.com contains one such testimonial from a fitness instructor.
Dr. Sears apparently sees his role as a standard setter. In the year since the publication of the OmegaRxZone, other pharmaceutical grade fish oils besides his own have come out at lower prices. If he were truly mercenary, he would have maintained his affiliation with the ZonePerfect company. He parted ways with them several years ago because he wanted to upgrade the quality of Zone bars. The ZonePerfect company has recently been bought out by a sports bar company (read candy bar) for huge dollars. That would have been the way for him to cash in if he really were in it for the bucks. His long-range view, gathered from the Q&A archives on his website, is that acceptance of his dietary technology will take 25 years.
Do you need this book versus any of the others? That's difficult to answer, because Dr. Sears seems to take a slightly different tack to explaining his system. If you are a convalescing heart attack victim, you might want to approach cooking with laboratory precision, but if you have immortal youth, you might be satisfied with more improvisation.
The short answer. For the quickest summary of the benefits of the Zone and various methods of putting it into practice, A Week in the Zone may be the best single book to start with (paperback, has some typos). If you collect all the Zone books, you will want this one, too.
The long answer:
Enter the Zone - the classic, also the best written
Mastering the Zone - learn to read Nutrition Facts labels - good for athletes
Age-Free (originally Anti-Aging) Zone - very detailed on life extension
Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes - cookbook w summaries of Zone used in
workshops for diabetics.
Zone Food Blocks - dietician/cooking reference
The Top 100 Zone Foods - favorite of some
The Soy Zone - for vegetarians and vegans
A Week In The Zone - reader's digest summaries
OmegaRxZone - medical & health benefits of pharmaceutical fish oil
The 28-day Makeover - (due at year's end) - sounds commercial
The Zone has often been misrepresented in the press. The "experts" who pick at the Zone admit that it's probably good for you. Have you noticed how many books now copy Barry Sears' format of presenting macronutrient ratios?
Nobody can disprove this statement: The Zone is the most moderate and balanced way of eating out there - it is a lifetime eating plan, not a remedial diet. It can adapt to all kinds of requirements; it does not completely forbid any food.
Is the Zone difficult to put into practice? Yes, it can be exasperating, since much of the food supply contains hi-glycemic carbs and harmful fats. Just how much of those "difficult" foods do you want to consume? If the Zone does nothing more than get you to understand the "Nutrition Facts" labels on food containers, Barry Sears has done you a great service.

Type Fish oil/Omega 3 on your favorite search engine-and look what comes up.
This guy is trying to sell his Fish oil supplement like mad.
How much faith can you place in a book like this when it's clear this man has a tremendous vested financial interest?
The book does summarize interseting research on omega 3 fatty acids. However, it can at times be one sided.
For example, he lauds the value of omega 3 fatty acids in psychiatric disease, but newer studies (by the National Institutes of health) have FAILED to show any positive effect.
