3 out of 5 stars Crazy, Just Crazy.......2007-08-16

This book is...I don't even know what to call it. It's truly is horrible for the first 100 pages. It's nothing like you've ever read or ever would expect from Lolita Files. I bought it (for like a quarter) despite all the bad reviews cause I just had to see for myself. Besides I usually like different stuff anyway. But as I was reading it, I couldn't believe this was the same author who wrote Child of God. BUT WAIT, HERE'S THE CRAZY PART, after about the 100th page, this novel gets insanely good! I mean it gets AMAZINGLY good!!! So if you can hang in there for that long (and the first part is terrible) then this is a really good story. I don't know what was going on with Miss Files when she penned this one, but it's definitely a bittersweet achievement.

4 out of 5 stars Suckers Always Pay For Beauty----One Way or Another.......2007-08-05

Regarding sex in literature, I try not to be prudish in my sensibilities, but I have sometimes been offended by "filth"--openly self-serving, very often freakish, and explicit sex--which serves no literary function other than as TNA & DNA pornography written in a "blue" language--used only for the sake of selling books to lonely, sexually unfulfilled, mostly middle-class women. Most such books are terribly written by wanna-be and talentless writers. A few have real talent, but are still manipulative seekers of mass-market suckers.

Intrigued by the wide disparity of reviews expressed (hated-it/loved-it) for Lolita Files novel SEX.LIES.MURDER.FAME I decided to read it for myself and form my own opinion. Here it is: I think this novel was excellent!! Yes, the sex was raunchy and explicit, but it is exactly this which pimps, sexual predators, and sociopaths use to manipulate and/or degrade women--women they hate--and think are stupid. The novel's protaganist, Penn, is a sociopath, or as we old-schoolers would say, a psychopath. (A book which I correspondingly recommend for reading is THE SOCIOPATH NEXT DOOR.) Sociopaths are always CHARMING PEOPLE!!! Sometimes with very high IQ's. But god help those who live next door or who fall under the spell of the "pretty boys" ala Ted Bundy.

Lesson to be learned??? Plain men who get a "pretty girl" will certainly lose their money (perhaps, like Russell Simmons.) But plain or pretty women who get "pretty boys" may lose their lives.

I appreciated the wit and intelligence of Lolita Files in SLMF, particularly the way she used literary and philosophical theories and appropriate quotes as examples of character. Had some of the language and sex been less "blue" and more implied, it might be perceived as a masterwork of literature. Even so, I enjoyed the book, and read selected passages (sans some of the blue notes) to my 22 year old and very religious daughter. Because women--all women--need to hear and know such things--things which are much more effective (Straight,no chaser) when told by other women. I say, Thanks, to Lolita Files.

From a Black Man, a Black Father, and a reader.

4 out of 5 stars Um....well..........2007-07-20

I don't want to say it was a bad book. Ms. Files has once again demonstrated her command of the written word, but the story was just overall a dark comedy, if I could call it that. Some parts were funny, and the ending, I wanted-if I could borrow a term from one reviewer-closure. All matters resolved. I got to the end and was like, 'okaay, now what?' If you're looking for her usual sistah-girl lit, you won't find it here. A great departure (not her first) but her talents as a writer still keep me as a fan.

4 out of 5 stars Shocking, funny, sexy.......2007-04-11

I've been a Lolita Files since day one, but was leary of this book because of the title. So unlike "Scenes From A Sistah" and "Getting To The Good Part." I generally don't read books with the word sex in the title because I want to get more out of book than that. The first chapter of this book was just a little too much Beryl, but I guess Ms Files felt like we needed a solid understanding of Beryl and she was right. Though this book is unlike her others (along with Child Of God)I thought it was an excellent page turner and was amazed that the woman who wrote "Scenes From A Sistah" could flip the entire script and invent these characters and add them to paper. Lolita Files is a SERIOUS talent who can write damn near anything you're interested in reading and I hope that this show of skills leads to bigger and better things for her. You go, girl!!!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed!.......2007-01-12

I consider myself a true fan of Ms Lolita Files, I have been following her career since Scenes from a Sistah and for her to release something like this is disappointing. I haven't even finished the book, because I have yet to understand what it's about. If she released another book I wouldn't hesitate to buy it because I know her talent, she just slipped up on this one.

5 out of 5 stars movie crossover.......2007-07-13

I have not yet had the pleasure of reading this book, having found the series through the Bar Mitzvah murder. But I recognize the story line as a movie starring Patty Duke. I can't remember the title of the movie, but it was well done.

5 out of 5 stars Good Friday Murder Review.......2006-03-16

The first book in the Christine Bennett mystery series is a great start. It keeps you interested all through the book. You think it would be a difficult murder to solve because it is so old but Christine does a good job. You will want to keep reading the series after this first book. She has great character development.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-11-06

I have had this book on my list of To Be Read forever. I put it there only because this title kept coming up on book review sites, favorite lists, etc. everywhere I looked. When a book comes up that often I usually give it a try and it usually turns out to have been everywhere I looked for a reason. (This is why I finally read Val McDermid's A Place of Execution and it was fantastic also.) Well my theory stands! This was terrific little novel and I highly recommend it, I read it in one day because it was so good.

5 out of 5 stars ~~~An excellent read for mystery lovers of all ages~~~.......2004-03-29

After being released from her vows, ex-nun Christine Bennett volunteers to investigate a forty-year-old murder case long since closed. Christine has to bring the past into the present in an effort to exonerate a pair of retarded savant twins, now senior citizens, while she is also adjusting to her new life as a contemporary woman. Lee Harris has made the characters in this book come to life! This was the first but definitely will not be my last time reading a Lee Harris mystery!!!

5 out of 5 stars Smart and believable.......2002-07-23

Christine Bennett is in the process of readjusting to "normal life" after spending 15 years as a cloistered nun. At a town meeting, she speaks in defense of disabled twin brothers accused of killing their mother 40 years before and to her surprise is put in charge of researching the case. As she starts to dig into the past, she meets a helpful (and smitten) police officer who helps in her search for the truth.

Christina does not run around accusing people of the murder without evidence, judge suspects harshly for their past actions or deliberately place herself in danger which is a refreshing change. This is a refreshing cozy mystery with likeable characters and an engrossing mystery.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as some medieval mysteries.......2003-03-27

It's obvious to the reader that the author has probably read every other medieval mystery in existence..there are bits in here from Ellis Peters, P.C. Doherty, Bernard Knight, Michael Jecks, etc. Unfortunately, the first 3/4 of the book is standard fare that we've read before...except that it is a bit slow moving and boring here, with somewhat wooden characters. What saves this novel is the final rush to an exciting ending.

4 out of 5 stars an exciting read.......2001-05-29

I am an avid reader of historical mysteries, esp of mysteries set in the middle ages. So I was quite ecstatic to find a new historical mystery series set in 13th century England. "Murder On A Good Friday" by Sara Conway is a well researched and well written mystery set in the small northern town of Hexham, and features the detecting skills of the bailiff of Hexham, Lord Goodwin, and his cousin by marriage, Lady Constance of Broadweal Manor.

The novel opens with the discovery of a young child's body a few days after Good Friday. Alfred, the unfortunate victim, had been first strangled and then mutilated: his palms bear puncture wounds, as if nails had been driven through them. Horror and panic strikes the town, and in the grip of fear and superstition, the Christian townspeople turn on the small Jewish community that resides in Hexham. Lord Goodwin, the bailiff, does not believe his Jewish friends are at all responsible for the crime, and has a hard time preventing the rabid townsmen from taking revenge. His task is not made easier when one of the newly arrived brothers from the nearby priory of St. Andrews claims that he has had a vision: Alfred is a martyr to the Christian faith because he was slain by the enemies of Christ. Alfred seeks vengeance. The Jews must be punished. Goodwin realises that it is only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose. Will he be able to discover who murdered Alfred before it is too late?

"Murder On A Good Friday" is a really riveting read. Sara Conway maintained the level of tension and suspense throughout the novel. With each succeeding chapter you wonder if Goodwin will be successful in preventing the lynching of the Jews to take place, and if will discover who perpetrated such a foul deed. Conway also did a brilliant job in bringing the small, sleepy town of Hexham to life, and in portraying the various relationships the inhabitants had with each other -- the Jews with the Christians, Goodwin with his constables and the townspeople, and the priory with the town. Unfortuantely, the denouncement of the mystery left a little to be desired: key bits of information were only revealed at the very end, and certain incidents and discoveries took place 'offstage.' However this was an exciting and compelling read, and I enjoyed the novel very much.

3 out of 5 stars Step back in time .......2007-07-18

"You were supposed to be much taller!" blurted Lacey Holbrook upon finding a stranger on her doorstep who was sent in answer to her summons. He responds at an eye-to-eye level by saying, . . . "we're out of six-foot-three-inch body builder variety this season. Perhaps if you'd gotten your specifications in before last Christmas we could have . . . ". Thus start the repartee on page one of SPELLBOUND and continues throughout this book in an entertaining and humorous manner.

The stranger is not really a stranger but Jed Merlin, Lacey's teenage heartthrob. Lacey had proposed to Jed when she was thirteen and he was twenty. Of course Jed turned her down gently and with fond tolerance thus sparing Lacey's tender ego. By doing so he became Lacey's unconscious role model for the ideal mate. Now Jed has reentered her life so changed that she does not recognize him. He has become a tawny bearded, scruffy, jeans-wearing-throw-back to a hippie gurus (remember we are back in the early 80's not so far removed from the earth mothers and fathers of the 70's, think MAMAs & PAPAs' California Dreaming to get into the right frame of mind). But underneath this surface image Lacey senses a strong masculine aura similar to a golden panther (Lacey's description not mine).

Jed however, is not at all surprised by the grownup Lacey. She is still the bossy-take-charge female he remembers so fondly. But Lacey is no longer that small, delicate young girl. She is now a sophisticated well-rounded women who is self described on a good self esteem day as a well proportioned but on a low self esteem day as plump. (Ms. Krentz certainly writes the way we sometimes feel about our body images. Its what I've come to look forward to in her books.) Jed lets Lacey know that she has also changed in some ways and shouldn't be so picky about her expectations of him. Both Lacey and Jed come to the conclusion that they are just not each others type despite the sparks that fly and an attraction that just doesn't quit.

SPELLBOUND develops from a reuniting of youthful friends into a delightful story of falling in love again. Jed agrees to help Lacey with her "problem" so he can pay off his father's old family debt to her family. He evens agrees to submit to a makeover. Jed laughs outright and states . . . "you're turning me into someone you can really fall for. Not many women get a chance to recreate the romantic fantasy of their youth!" Lacey responds caustically, "Don't hold your breath" all the while recalling the cool competent way in which Jed had always made her feel safe and protected. That sensation persists even now seventeen years later, when she is most in need of protection. Both Lacey and Jed discover that neither is what they appear to be.

It's a kick to read about Jed's makeover and how he handles it in his own unique way. The rebirth of Lacey's and Jed's relationship and the resolution of the "problem" is described in classic Krentz fashion and provided much satisfaction to this reader. Jed and Lacey happily ride off into the sunset for more fun and good times.

The surprise for this particular early JAK work is the unconventional hero, Jed. He certainly had no qualms about Lacey's take charge attitude in the bedroom. Jed was a well-rounded non-alpha male who made things happen without any fuss. He soon became one of my favorite Krentz guys. If you can find this book do buy it as it is a delightful read despite its lack of sensual descriptions. I'm sure glad I kept hunting for my copy.

3 out of 5 stars Hot and steamy romance - published November 1982.......2002-12-02

Lacey Holbrook has gotten herself into dangerous trouble with a brief affair with a man who appears to be connected with the criminal sector. She schemes to have the man break off the affair when he finds out she has a supposed lover (sent to her by old family friends - the Merlin family who have an outstanding debt owing to her deceased father). But the man who comes to repay the debt is the son Jed Merlin, a man she thought herself in love with at the age of thirteen. Attraction and romance quickly develops between them.

Jayne Castle's romance stories have matured from the earlier ones in the series. Her plot line is actually realistic. Although the story line promises romantic suspense, Castle hasn't quite reached the stage in her writing career to develop it. Other than a brief car chase, there is little tension or suspense, and we never meet the criminal man himself. Still the love scenes with Jed are hot and steamy, and Castle keeps the pace racing. A nice page turner.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but lacking the suspense it promised........2002-10-22

          Heroine: tall, plump/voluptuous

Interior decorator Lacey Holbrook is in trouble, and she's ready to call in an old favor to get out of it. She fully expected the Merlin family to make good on her request for a "suitable" man to assist her, but was stunned to see the heir to the empire himself standing at the door of her trendy L.A. apartment. Jed Merlin had changed. No longer the clean-cut young man she worshipped with adolescent eyes, this shaggy denim-clad stranger hardly seems like the CEO of a major corporation, and certainly not the answer to her predicament!

Jed Merlin rang the bell expecting to help out an old family friend, but the cool, collected woman who answered the door was nothing like the little girl he so fondly recalled proposing marriage to him, citing it as a merger between their two family businesses. Irritated with the way Lacey is intent on playing Pygmalion and pigeon-holing him into her idea of an urbane male, Jed sets out to show Lacey what a real man is made out of, turning the voluptuous beauty and her ideals on their ear.

          What worked for me:

I always get a kick out of reading older contemporaries because they are frozen in time. This story has the heroine sporting an easy-care Dorothy Hamill 'do and a silk jumpsuit, which I recall was all the rage way back when the wardrobe on "Charlie's Angels" was considered the cutting edge of chic fashion.

Though her appearance was brief, there is a secondary character, a writer of bodice rippers, who provides some tongue-in-cheek humor about the romance genre in general. It's nice to see an author who has a sense of humor about her line of work.

I thought Jed was fairly well-drawn for such a short novel, and I definitely could see myself chatting comfortably with him at a party.

Size-wise Lacey was heavier than was "in" for L.A. in the late 70s/early 80s, and felt self-conscious about her height around men under 6'.

          What didn't work for me:

I hate to say it, but I really didn't like Lacey. I couldn't break my initial impression of her as a controlling ice-queen because it took her so long to thaw out.

The story hinted at Lacey being in danger, but with the exception of one scene the reader never feels it. "Spellbound" just didn't deliver the suspense it seemed to promise.

          Overall:

A solid read, but it may be difficult to track down this older title.

Warning, there are some steamy scenes in this story.

If you liked "Spellbound" you might also enjoy "His Seductive Revenge", "The Bridesmaid's Reward", "Carried Away", or "His E-mail Order Wife".

          5 out of 5 stars A Great Example........2002-03-07

          Fantastic!!

A highly enjoyable and a-typical Castle book. The second to last of an eight book series had me laughing out loud on several occasions. Such an emmersive and wonderful book that best tipifies what DeChancie fans love most.

5 out of 5 stars A Wild and Crazy ride with John DeChancie!.......1998-11-10

The castle books are good, but this is my favorite. It is completely wild and out of control but filled with so much excitement that a person cannot put it down. DeChancie shows his best with his wit and humor. Also the adventure is so real that a person finds themselves in the castle watching it all. This book is worth picking up and if your like me it will be picked up again and again!

5 out of 5 stars yet another wonderful castle yarn.......1998-03-06

The seventh installment in the Castle Perilous series continues the traditions of the past episodes of the series. As the Mike Resnick quote on the back of this (and nearly every other DeChancie work) states, "DeChancie delivers!" He does so here once again.

For those unfamiliar with the Castle series, a synopsis: A magical castle, stranded between space and time, with windows to 144,000 worlds, is home to travelers, adventurers, and a multitude of strange beings. Humans are among them, including Gene Ferraro, who wandered into the castle through an entrance in the City of Pittsburgh's subway system. His best friend, Snowclaw, resembles a yeti, speaks perfect english (thanks to the workings of the castle,) and wields a substantial axe. The proprietor of the castle, Lord Incarnadine -- Inky to his friends -- serves as a sort of Captain Steubing to the residents of his love boat. He's frequently on vacation from the castle, and even he doesn't understand all of the secrets of its' construction.

In this volume of the series, a party being thrown by Inky. Which calls for many special visitors. Which, of course, calls for flaws in the castle defenses. Which leads to many uninvited guests. Which leads to the real action of the story. The story rings of an "interdimensional frat party" with all the uninvited guests and problems therein. The only difference is that here, rather than having the excise police arrive to break things up, the partygoers break out swords and magic spells to do away with the party crashers.

The magic of DeChancie's work in the Castle series is that it uses humor, both in direct portions and in-jokes, in a way infrequently read in the era in which it was written. Today, adventure and humor walk hand-in-hand in television series such as Hercules and Xena. DeChancie's smart, smooth writing style, present here as well as earlier (Starrigger Trilogy) and later (Dr. Dimension, Living with Aliens) works keeps the reader engrossed and enthralled.

3 out of 5 stars Healthy Heart Handbook.......2001-06-02

This book provided a general background about the heart, cholesterol and high blood pressure. I found the book did not provide me with any information that is already available for free from the Americn Heart Association. Several heart-wise recipes were included. The most helpful thing I noted was to eat an apple a day....

              5 out of 5 stars HEART SMART.......2000-02-16

Must read if you have clogged arteries.I had tests done and needed a new heart. This book has provided me with very useful information.

              5 out of 5 stars Very clear........1999-08-27

I'm 81 years old plus for the last 10 years I've been very sensitive to Blood Pressure Medicines, besides all the reactions to the drugs it didn't lower my BP. Most of the time it was 200/106. I was so miserable all the time, I asked my doctor if I could stop them. After many more tries with several kinds of BP meds. He agreed to stop them. It was then that I got the book on how to lower your BP without drugs. Today my BP is 140/80 and I feel alive again. The information in the book is very clear and understandable. There's so much to learn in the book. It explains it all so well.

              5 out of 5 stars I cannot believe it!.......1999-07-13

This book is a wonderful book. I had been taking blood pressure medication since I was 50 now I am 74. The doctor took me off my medication about 6 mos. ago. I seem 100% better. I walk and eat right. At first, I was afraid to quit the medicine. The doctor said, "you don't need it" - using the garlic is wonders. My blood pressure stays somewhat lower now than when I was taking the medicine. I cannot believe it myself.

              5 out of 5 stars I recommend it........1999-07-09

I recommend the book very highly...this book has been quite an eye opener for me. I feel much better now and look forward to getting off the pills for my blood pressure soon.
