Book Description

In this third volume of his Women of Genesis series, Orson Scott Card paints a vivid picture of the intertwined lives of four celebrated women. We meet Leah, the oldest daughter of Laban, whose "tender eyes" prevent her from fully participating in the daily work of her nomadic family, and Rachel, the spoiled younger daughter, the petted and privileged beauty of the familynbsp;-- or so it seems to Leah. There is also Bilhah, an orphan who is not quite a slave but not really a family member, a young woman desperately searching to fit in, and Zilpah, who knows only how to use her beauty to manipulate men as she strives to secure for herself something better than the life of drudgery and servitude into which she has been born. Into the desert camp comes Jacob, a handsome and charismatic kinsman who is clearly destined to be Rachel's husband. But that doesn't prevent the other women from vying for his attention. Tracing their lives from childhood to maturity, Card shows how these women change each othernbsp;-- and are changed again by the holy books that Jacob brings with him. Ambition, jealousy, fear, and love motivate them as they vie for the attention of Jacob, heir to the spiritual birthright of Abraham and Isaac.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and enlightening reading.......2007-07-15

This book is the third in a trilogy of books based on the women who married the biblical heroes of faith from Genesis. Having read the first volume, Sarah - (Abraham's wife), and the second, Rebekkah -(Isaac's wife); both of which are fascinating reading - I could hardly wait to enjoy this book about the wives of Jacob. These books are wholly fiction and yet illuminate the characters from the biblical stories and give them context within the culture of their time and faith. Orson Scott Card has given these women genuine attributes of strength and weakness, love and jealousy, great faith and great doubt, and in so doing has deepened my appreciation for all that is written in these stories. I believe that the bible is God's Inspired Word and these books do not take anything away from that belief nor distort it in any way. I recognize these as works of fiction and yet still I am inspired by his conjecture that these people struggled within themselves and still managed to lead lives of faith. I recognize all the elements of the biblical stories and marvel at how Card contrives background and nuance to shaping their telling. The forward and afterword reveal too much of the author's bias regarding the bible and lessened my experience and if pressed I would say they could easily be skipped - but the text is formidable storytelling.... ABSOLUTELY ENTERTAINING !!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars good but left me hanging.......2007-03-10

I was a little disappointed with this book after reading the two previous books in the Women of Genesis series. The only letdown for me was how it ended. There was a lot of build up and then I was left with a lot of questions that will only be answered in the next installment of the series. I'm not a fan of having to wait for my answers, so that was my only qualm. Other than that, it was well written and I am forever impressed at Card's ability to not only understand the nature of women, but the nature of human interaction in general.

4 out of 5 stars Poor Leah..........2006-08-11

I love Orson Scott Card in general, and have been a fan of his other "Women of Genesis" books. This however was my least favorite of the series. Mostly it was a visceral repsonse and nothing to do with the writing: I really identify with Leah, and think she got a bum deal (however historically accurate) at the end of the book. Also, this is another one of his books that he couldn't fit all into one actual book, so you are left in the middle of the story without much of a resolution at the end of the book.

In many ways the story is very enjoyable. As usual, Card's characterizations are well done. He is a believer in "if you know how a person thinks about himself on the inside you'll understand him so much that you can't help but love him, imperfections and all." So he makes some characters self centered, others altrustic, others immature, but when the story is told from their point of view they are all sympathetic. It's interesting from that level alone. It's also interesting to get a more detailed view of life in Genesis days, the way people were casually treated as slaves and such. Card does his homework and makes the day to day details in the story as accurate as possible. All in all not a bad story, just one that once explored by Card in intimate detail, I didn't like.

5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2006-03-16

I am a huge fan of Card's science fiction series and also his historical fiction , "PastWatch". I read both of the past books in the series (Sarah and Rebekah) and loved them both. You don't have to be overly religious to enjoy these books, it may even be better if you're not, that way you won't get too hung up on the details or omissions. Card is a great story teller and it shows in these books. I found myself going back to the bible passages to see how it matched up with the story after the fact. I can't wait for the follow up book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Historical Fiction Novel worth Reading.......2006-02-14

I enjoy reading books about characters that actually existed. Orson Scott Card's insight into the lives of Rachel and Leah was both believable and delightful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to explore possibilities of these women's lives without degrading their memory. I was impressed by Card's ability to make so much out of a simple account in Genesis, and also make me respect these women and want to learn more about them. You should definitely look into this one!

Nobody knows better than Matthew Scudder how far down a person can sink in this city. A young prostitute named Kim knew it also—and she wanted out. Maybe Kim didn't deserve the life fate had dealt her. She surely didn't deserve her death. The alcoholic ex-cop turned p.i. was supposed to protect her, but someone slashed her to ribbons on a crumbling New York City waterfront pier. Now finding Kim's killer will be Scudder's penance. But there are lethal secrets hiding in the slain hooker's past that are far dirtier than her trade. And there are many ways of dying in this cruel and dangerous town—some quick and brutal ... and some agonizingly slow.

5 out of 5 stars Scudder is Great!.......2007-09-20

I bought this thinking it was the first in the Matthew Scudder series, but it is actually about the fifth or so. It was excellent. Very well-written and I loved the Scudder character, especially his struggle with drinking and involvement in AA. If you like mysteries/detective novels, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Enjoyable Crime Novel.......2005-06-30

Lawrence Block is a writer's writer. His style, words, and plots are top notch. What do you get in this story? You get a grim and gritty New York - home to Matt Scudder, ex-cop and private investigator. You get Scudder's desperate efforts to overcome his addiction to alcohol. And you get the story of Kim, a prostitute, who pays Scudder to tell Chance, her pimp, that she wants to leave the business. Next, she is slashed to death. The obvious suspect is Chance, but Scudder becomes convinced that Chance didn't kill her, and Chance pays Scudder to find the murderer. As Scudder investigates, and more murders occur, it becomes clear that Kim had unknowingly become involved with a group of violent criminals. A nice feature of the story is that Block gives you all of the clues to pretty-much solve the mystery. Otherwise, you must wait until the final pages. It is a great story. Little wonder that Block has won so many awards for his mystery writing.

5 out of 5 stars Eight Million Ways to Die Blocks Best Scudder Novel Ever?.......2004-04-11

Having only read one other Lawrence Block novel "A Dance at the Slaughterhouse", I was intrigued at the depth of Eight Million Ways to Die. The characters and the environment of New York being the backdrop for this story makes for an entertaining read. As well as Scudders unwillingness to accept that he's an alcoholic. The ending was a classic one. The way Block is able to bring to life the city as a main part of the plot in the story is amazing. Eight Million Ways to Die is a classic and will forever be remembered as one of the top 25 mystery novels of all time!

      Eight Million Ways To Die

Her hair long and braided, wrapped around her head like a turban. Her clothes fitting her in a way so perfect that you'd think that you would have to peel them off carefully. She walked as though she were floating on clouds and did not have a worry in the world. By the time I put my cup of coffee on the table she was walking towards me and sitting on the chair at the opposite end of my table. I was amazed that of all the people there she came to sit near me. She was so close that I could smell her rose petal perfume, which filled the air that I breathed in as much as I could. But by the noticeable actions of her character, I could tell that she, if any, was a hooker.
The main characters of this story are Matthew Scudder, a retired policeman who is trying to get over a drinking problem, Chance, Kim's pimp, and Kim Dakkinen, the hooker that hired Matthew to get her out of her business that has been killed. Matthew Scudder gets to know Kim by her introducing herself to Matt at a bar where Matt was drinking coffee. Kim asks him if she pays him a certain amount of money if he will talk to her pimp and get her out of the business of being a hooker. By the time that Matt talks to the pimp, Chance, he says its ok for her to leave. The next thing that happens is Kim turns up dead in some nearby hotel. Now hired by Chance, Matthew Scudder is being paid to find who the killer is and why they did it. Hitting many potholes in his journey to find the killer, Matt keeps running into those dead ends and now is getting closer than ever.
I like this book for many reasons. It has many mysteries and riddles to figure out. It will keep your attention to the book and you will love or like this book. This is the kind of book I like to read, that's why I picked it up in the first place. This is the best crime novel I have ever read.
Matthew Scudder is a great character for this book in many different ways. He's a great detective and cares for his work in a weird way that no one could understand. Chance, the pimp, plays a great role here too. The way he acts and talks make's you jump back and forth to whether he's the person who killed Kim. Chance in this book leans towards the side of helping look for the real killer in the book.
This is a very good book to read if you are interested in this sort of thing. It keeps your mind busy and thinking throughout the whole time that you are reading the book. These are great characters that have life styles that most people can relate to in some way.
Matthew would have found the killer faster if he would have stayed sober and that would have kept his mind clear. I'm not saying that Matthew Scudder is not a good detective, but he has most of his personal problems like drinking jumping into the way of him getting the killer. By the time that he starts staying sober he finds a suspect that fits the profile of the killer, but it seems as though the suspect vanishes before he is found. This book twisted my mind in different directions while I was reading it. The great mystery that Lawrence Block puts in his books is what makes it one of the best crime novels ever.

5 out of 5 stars Scudder Descends into the Depths.......2001-02-22

"Eight Million Ways to Die" is a classic piece of hardboiled detective fiction that represents a turning point in the life of its hero, Matthew Scudder. Early on in the narrative, Scudder is told frankly by a young doctor after a two-day alcohol blackout, "if you drink, you'll die." Scared by the warning, Scudder takes a case he doesn't want in a despearte attempt to distract him from alcohol. His struggles with the bottle come across very real and are harrowing to behold. The case is a good one as well with Scudder attempting to track the manaical killer of a hooker who was trying to leave the life. Death is an ever constant theme, with the book's title being a riff on the old literary saying "there are eight million stories in the naked city."

This book is everything great private detective fiction should be; dark, cynical, violent and lonely. Frankly, I like Scudder better during this period than later on after he sobers up. If you agree, you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Feel the passion of Sinatra's 'New York, New York' !.......2000-04-12

I've never been in New York, but after reading the Scudder series it feels like I've been living there all my life... This is the gem of the series, set in (up to date! ) the most difficult time in Scudder's life - the time when he comes to the realization that he IS, in fact, an alcoholic, and that liquor is increasingly eating away what's left of his life. Unfortunately for him, this is not his only problem. While trying to give up on the booze, he also has to cope with the murder of a young prostitute which he was hired to get out of the street alive. This novel could only be descriped as a masterpiece. Scudder's vulnerability creates the impression that he's REAL, that he's gonna jump out of the pages any time. The pimp, Chance, who might or might not be responsible for the murder, surprises by adding depth to a character type usually portrayed as one-dimensional baddies. Mr. Block, if you read this - you have achieved legend status with this one, even if some of the later entries in the series ('Even the wicked') might be a bit predictable and excessively melodramatic. I salute you. Read it, it's worth it.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-07-17

I bought this book to prepare for the NBCOT exam, and found it to be pretty much useless. The questions are not formatted or in anyway similar to those on the exam, and the answers in the back are very brief, one or two sentances, and don't offer much clarification or explanation regarding correct or incorrect answers. I found that most of the book focuses on terminology or basic concepts; not at all as in depth or as situational as the real exam.

2 out of 5 stars This book was a disappointment.......2006-03-15

                                Greetings,

Let me start out by saying that I passed the certification test on my first try with a very high score.

Having said that, unforunately this book simply does not prepare you for the NBCOT certification exam. I would recommend this only as a add-on to other material and others books, specifically the one I liked was by Caryn Johnson "The Occupational Therapy Examination Review Guide".

As far as this book goes:

                                - The majority of the questions are *not even close* to the same format as you will encounter on the certification test. On the NBCOT test, ALL of the questions are based on clinical reasoning. This book has many questions like "Where on the body would you find the acromion process?" and way too few questions that resemble the real deal.

                                - The explanation of the correct answer is somewhat limited.

                                - For a few of their questions, I honestly thought their explanation for the 'correct' answer was actually incorrect!

                                - The wrong choices from their sample questions are barely discussed. In the book by Caryn Johnson, they explain every choice, why one answer is correct and why the other choices are incorrect.

                                - They do not reference the source material from where their explanation came from. In the Caryn Johnson book, it would list a detailed answer, then the book AND the chapter from which this question was formulated. That was a huge help because I would flip open my textbook and immediately read up on that subject.

                                - This book did come with a voucher to take an online, timed test. But that online test did not have ANY explanation of the answers, right or wrong.

This book isn't horrible. It will get you thinking in the test-taking frame of mind and it will provide you some helpful advice. As an add-on book to other stuff, it will help you. However, I would recommend not letting this book be your only source.

                                Good luck.
