Claireece Precious Jones endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed. So what better way to learn about her than through her own, halting dialect. That is the device deployed in the first novel by poet and singer Sapphire. "Sometimes I wish I was not alive," Precious says. "But I don't know how to die. Ain' no plug to pull out. 'N no matter how bad I feel my heart don't stop beating and my eyes open in the morning." An intense story of adversity and the mechanisms to cope with it.

Book Description

Relentless, remorseless, and inspirational, this "horrific, hope-filled story" (Newsday) is certain to haunt a generation of readers. Precious Jones, 16 years old and pregnant by her father with her second child, meets a determined and highly radical teacher who takes her on a journey of transformation and redemption.

5 out of 5 stars cruel reality.......2007-10-09

I used the text in my adult education class. The brutal reality and the level of literacy of the narrator both made it a solid choice for class. The book is harsh and not all students will enjoy it. But it does give students a chance to talk about reality, and to talk about the parts of life that don't show up on TV. The controversy of the text allows for discussions on editing yourself and creates powerful journals. The literacy level of the narrator is disarming and provides an avenue to talk about revision in a nonjudgmental forum. Most importantly, the text shows development and helps students visualize the route to success. Precious needed years to make it to her goal, she had to overcome a great deal to get there. These ideas provide a realistic motivation for adult students. I would definitely advise students on the controversial topics covered before beginning. I had students read at home only. I only had women in the class.

2 out of 5 stars I'm In The Minority.......2007-06-30

Most people seem to think this book is outstanding, so I know that I'm in the minority here. That being said, I was not impressed by this book. Don't get me wrong - I will NEVER forget it. But I'm not sure that's a good thing in this case.

I have searched online and I can't find any confirmation that this story is true. From what I can tell it was written by an author with knowledge of life in the ghetto. But still, it seems to be a fictitious account and that bothers me.

IF it were a memoir, a biography or even based on a true story then I would have given it FIVE stars. I would have ranked it along with the likes of 'I Couldn't Keep It To Myself' by Wally Lamb (which is one of my favourite books.)

But the fact that this story is fictitious and yet so horrificly graphic, really left me with a bad feeling.

I KNOW that what happened to Precious can and does happen and that fact wrenches out my heart. But unless this book was someone's true story, I have to say that it just left me feeling negative and maybe even a little bit sick. I didn't come away uplifted by the main character's conquest of her past. (Not to mention that the end of the book just leaves you hanging.)

I think the author could have conveyed the horrors of sexual abuse, the sorry state of affairs with the welfare system and most of the other important issues covered in this book, without going to such low depths in her graphic descriptions of the abuse that took place in the story.

In my opinion, there are other books dealing with similar horrors that are true memoirs, or biographies, or at least based on true accounts that are rendered in a much more positive and compelling way - I usually share my books with friends and family, but I can't say that PUSH will be added to my permanent collection or circulated.

2 out of 5 stars Buy it cheap or Borrow...........2007-06-15

Well, being as though the story is told by an illiterate woman who'd only began to read at around 17, the book is pretty poorly written, and at times it is downright unreadable (Inlis U r in pree skol.)It is a sub-par read, and although some would say it is inspiring, it's just an average tale of abused black youth. Maybe you enjoy hearing EXPLICIT accounts of a father raping his daughter, down to the point of how her body reacts to his movements. Sometime too gritty and foul to be considered artistic. It's definatly something you must check out at some point in your life... just check it out of a library...

Borrow... NO BUY!

4 out of 5 stars Depressingly Optimistic.......2006-12-28

A very vivid social commentary on the failure of the social welfare system and the Reagan administration. If you are too young to remember the early 80's, or were raised in the suburbs this would be a good novel to read to get a glimpse into the inner city life during that time. Be aware of extremely rough language and emotionaly upsetting plot twists.

Book Description

A collection of short stories from the grandfather of Japanese alternative comics.

Legendary cartoonist Yoshihiro Tatsumi is the grandfather of alternative manga for the adult reader. Predating the advent of the literary graphic novel movement in the United States by thirty years, Tatsumi created a library of literary comics that draws parallels with modern prose fiction and today's alternative comics.

Designed and edited by one of today's most popular cartoonists, Adrian Tomine, The Push Man and Other Stories is the debut volume in a groundbreaking new series that collects Tatsumi's short stories about Japanese urban life. Tatsumi's stories are simultaneously haunting, disturbing, and darkly humorous, commenting on the interplay between an overwhelming, bustling, crowded modern society and the troubled emotional and sexual life of the individual.

5 out of 5 stars Bloody'ell!.......2006-07-19

Yoshihiro Tatsumi, The Push Man and Other Stories (Drawn and Quarterly, 2005)

The Push Man is the kind of thing that's going to weird you out anyway, but it will do so even more when you realize that all of the little stories collected here were actually written thirty-five years before the book's publication. To say Tatsumi was ahead of his time is, perhaps, the understatement of the year.

Because of the odd time differential, pretty much everything I could say about this book would need to be reversed, and would be less appropriate for the review. For example, Tatsumi doesn't show stylistic similarities to Charles Burns; Burns shows stylistic similarities to Tatsumi. (Either way round, it's a compliment.) Burns is an excellent point of comparison for those unfamiliar with Tatsumi; both are looking to get under society's skin and play around with the guts for a while before showing them to you like an eager-to-please six-year-old holding a dead badger out to you as a present and expecting you to exclaim with joy. Of course, the lives themselves are different-- Burns chronicles the stoner-era Pacific Northwest, while Tatsumi is looking at the sixties salaryman-- but looking at the two artists side-by-side, what's more apt to strike the reader is the universality of the darker human emotions. Pain, rage, confusion, hopelessness, and despair float through Tatsumi's characters as if they're breathing it straight from the air. Tatsumi captures these essences wonderfully. You have to wonder about the psyche of a person who's capable of defining characters so well with so few words and then doing such horrible things to them (or letting those things be done to them).

I don't think it would be terribly much of a stretch to at least hazard the hypothesis that Tatsumi's work, when it first appeared in 1969, may have been the single biggest thing to ever happen to graphic literature. Tatsumi made people sit up and say "hey, maybe this is something we should take seriously." Translations of his work into English are long overdue (except, of course, for bootlegs), and very welcome. This is great stuff. Seek it out. **** ½

4 out of 5 stars "I myself am a very normal person".......2006-05-30

"I myself am a very normal person. Please do not interpret these stories as representative of the author's personality." This plea to the reader appears on the very last page of this book, and upon coming across it, most readers will probably think the disclaimer belongs at the front of the book. Because by the end of these 16 short graphic stories, which represent a "best of" anthology of Tatsumi's work from 1969 (the plan is to continue releasing a "best of" for each year), it's very hard not to suspect the author of having some major dysfunctions with both society at large, and especially with women. According to the introduction by Adrian Tomine, Tatsumi is considered "the grandfather of Japanese alternative comics", and coined the term "gekiga" to distinguish naturalistic, more adult comics from the popular "manga" fare for kids. The material in this collection certainly falls into the "gekiga" category, as it encompasses very adult material. Not "adult" in the sexual sense (although there is sexual explicit material), but in the more metaphysical sense that is brought on by feelings of urban alienation

The stories are set in late '60s Japan, in what is presumably Tokyo, and Tatsumi writes that he found inspiration in newspaper human interest stories and the police blotter. If that's the case, it seems he was drawn to tragic stories about men who just couldn't cope with their lot. In every story, the protagonist is a kind-faced everyman figure (visually, he is the same in almost every story), who works some kind of menial job either on his own or with men who don't respect him. He either lives alone or at home with a wife or girlfriend who either works as a bar hostess or openly cheats on him. Stripped of his manhood on all fronts, he either lashes out in violence, takes cold-blooded revenge, or commits suicide. Indeed, it's impossible not to notice the misogyny that pervades the stories -- literally every woman is either wanton, scheming, drunk, greedy, or somehow tainted. The urban setting, dominant theme of alienation, outbursts of violence and disgust, and sexual disgust are perhaps best compared to the film "Taxi Driver" in terms of tone, and yet are ones that seem to crop up over and over in modern Japanese fiction and film.

in contrast to the gritty subject matter, the artwork tends to be very clean and crisp, and as with everything published by Drawn & Quarterly, the book is beautifully produced. The panels haven't simply been "flopped" from the original Japanese layout, but have been rearranged for Western formatting, and the results are spectacular. Fans of Adrian Tomine's work will appreciate both the visual style, and the use of silence throughout the stories. However, this is a book that should be read not only by comics aficionados, but by anyone interested in the literature of modern Japan. It will be interesting to see if Tatsumi's stories change tone and theme over time, and I look forward to the 1970 volume.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy Book.......2006-04-05

I am very pleased I bought this. The art is great, and the stories are totally disturbing. Despair and a disconnect with the rest of society are common themes throughout these stories. These are themes that never age!

The art is very pleasing, all in black and white they do an excellant job of protraying the despair that runs rampant in the stories.

The stories are not for those that like happy things, but if you like dark stories with unhappy endings (Like real life) then this for you. Highly recommended.

Book Description

Reginald “Push” Jackson was a good kid from Harlem. He never meant to do anyone any harm. His parents raised him better than that…But then they were murdered and he was left on his own. And that’s when the real trouble began…

Street fights. Guns. Drugs. Push fought his way through the back alleys to become one of Harlem’s most powerful players. He made a name for himself for being tough. But he was loyal, too. Push would do anything to keep his loving sister, and his baby nephew, out of harm’s way—until the law caught up with him, and he landed himself in a federal penitentiary.

Fifteen years later, Push has paid his dues. Though he planned to leave the thug life behind once he got out prison, he suddenly finds himself back in the game. But this time there are new players, and the rules are more dangerous—and deadly—than ever…

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Push this back on the shelf.......2005-01-12

Relentless delivers another urban fiction. Back in the day, Reginald "Push" Jackson was known as the biggest drug pusher of the 125th street crew. They had the drug game on lock until the Feds came in and had witnesses turn state's evidence, thus causing Push to be sentenced to 15 years in a federal penitentiary. As a result, the crew and the drug game folded.
Fifteen years later, with a hardened body and soul, Push re-enters society determined not to succumb to recidivism. That's funny considering shortly after his release he murders his sister's boyfriend because she has telltale signs of abuse on her face. This isn't the end of his vengeance; he is still determined to avenge his parent's death --twenty years later. What Push doesn't know is: someone is watching him; someone saw him murder his sister's boyfriend in cold blood. That someone is Roy Washington. Roy is an ex-informant turned loan shark extraordinaire of Harlem . Roy is intrigued by what he sees and now wants to know the man behind the gun. He wants to proposition Push to do some work for him. Push wants to become legit and has a real estate venture brewing in his head, but he needs capital to make it come to fruition. How will he raise the capital is the question.
While reading you may become a tad bit confused in regards to whom the book is really about. The title says Push but most of the story is about Roy Washington. You see, Roy is also working a deal with the Feds to uncover a campaigning scheme where a local politician's campaign manager is using monies from the "Empowerment" fund for his own purposes. Both Roy and Push play integral parts but who hires whom? As the plot unfolds, a lot of unexpected results are the conclusion and someone ultimately has to pay in the end.
Push reads like an "already been done" type novel that tells about someone's stint in prison and their attempt to walk on the other side of the law after being released. This attempt was - okay. The grammatical and editorial errors annoyed me. I have officially dubbed Relentless Aaron the ellipse king simply because...he used them...clearly where other...punctuation...would have better...fit. This significantly detracted from the story simply because I kept - pausing. Ain't that many breaths in a story, period. While the story had potential, it failed on this attempt.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greats.......2004-09-28

I've been an english teacher for 10 years, a business owner for 6 years, and a community leader since 1997... and I must say that I've never been encouraged to wriite a "review" about any book, story, etc.--especially not online. Now comes this new author, Relentless Aaron, with his book PUSH. I must here and now praise this author, his heart and courage, since such a story could NEVER be crafted had the author not experienced the same (at least) in some capacity. Relentless is a jewel among us. He is in depth, he is full of awareness & wisdom, and (quite frankly) I see him as a POWERHOUSE not to be compared. Anyone who discounts his worth, his value, or his contribution to the literary landscape is not very real themselves. DON'T HATE, CONGRATULATE! is what I have to say to the one or two haters I've read about. To those who DO understand the plight and power of PUSH (the character, as well as the storyline), you've probably been through something, enough to understand how rough the streets can be. ROUGH indeed. And since (as the saying goes) everything ain't for everybody, this book would be for those who can handle the truth... for those who don't embrace the superficial, and also, for the NON-haters of the world who are too busy with their own lives to be negative! We applaud Relentless Aaron for his work, and I ask my fellow readers to indulge in true, honest emotions of PUSH. Both the story and the main character will have a sincere impact on your life.

3 out of 5 stars Over Rated.......2004-09-10

After reading all the rave reviews I was drooling to read this much over rated novel. I was very disappointed at the countless descriptions the author felt the need to devulged to introduce each and every character. Asondra was as stupid as they come! Willing to do and ignore any and everything her man commands just for a quick buck. Push was the sterotypical jail bird! He spent the best years of his life behind bars which resulted in him being hardened, emotionless, and thinking he could out smart his PO. This makes me think, do they ever learn? Can they live the straight and narrow? Can they benefit society? Sara, was a ucking fay trip! A white woman using this type of language towards a black man is totally unacceptable! She would've been killed with the first racial remark she felt the need to let loosely slip her lips. Overall, Relentless did a good job taking the novel full circle but was surely in my opinion overly descriptive. Although, sex scenes can never be too descriptive :-)

4 out of 5 stars So I finally read Push.......2004-08-22

I'm going to have to go against the grain on this one. After hearing so much about this book and all the 5 star reviews I just had to read it. While Push was good, it was not all that to me. For one, I would have liked to have read more from Push's perspective and less from Roy. It was a good book but somewhat of a disappointment compared to the hype surrounding it.

5 out of 5 stars Pushing the boundries of excitement.......2004-07-26

Relentless Aaron has done it!He is that rare breed of authors who can excite, anger and arose a reader in the same book.PUSH is the novel that caused me to want more from this author as well as dreading the ending of said novel due to the fact that it was that damn good!It takes the reader into the world of a classic anti hero named Reginald "Push" Johnson.Push comes home after serving time in prision only to be lured back into the seamy underbelly of Harlem for the sake of family. The novel details the relasionship of Push the hitman, his victims, and the effect one has on the others lives. There is a lot to be said for an author who takes the time to do reserch on a subject for publication but with Relentless Aaron you feel that he has been there done that and has the tee shirt! He has created a page turner that only leaves you wanting more. The same way a man and woman who have just finished their first honeymoon bedroom session want more. This is a well written exciting summer read.I highly recommend it.

A suspense thriller about what happens to two married couples in suburbia after a not-so-innocent flirtation at a local bar turns ugly.

5 out of 5 stars Fred and Jan Yager Hit the Mark Once More.......2002-06-06

In their latest suspense-filled yarn, "Just Your Everyday People", the Yagers have gone beyond the crime novel genre to create a work with a literary theme that should challenge any modern reader. That theme is fidelity and how the lack thereof can undermine the stability of the best of marriages or the fondest of friendships. Which is not to say that the book isn't a good read. It's real page-turner too!

5 out of 5 stars Well crafted storytelling.......2002-03-10

Husband and wife writing team Fred and Jan Yager follow up their first suspense novel, Untimely Death With Just Your Everyday People. With Fred's background as a television executive and screenwriter, plus his degree in psychology and Jan's doctorate in Sociology, they pack enough knowledge to write a gritty teeth clenching story. Fred was also a war correspondent in Viet Nam and considerable experience as a news writer for CBS News and Fox Television. Jan has more than a dozen nonfiction books to her credit, has taught criminology at Temple University and The New School

Just Your Everyday People begins as two couples look forward to a night out drinking after the long work week ends. But what begins as a classic night out in our society soon dissolves into murder, deception, and poor choices. Julia and Paul Stanton meet their friends Lizzie and John in a bar. But when Lizzie seduces a stranger in a bizarre scheme for quick cash, their lives quickly unravel:

"He remembered floating to shore and pulling his bleeding body on to a rocky bank where he lay exhausted, falling in and out of consciousness. But where was all the rest? What else had happened? His memory was like a black hole, an endless void. The sound of a car approaching had awakened him again and he managed to crawl into the prickly bush just as the headlights flooded the bank of the reservoir."

Written tongue-in-cheek, Just Your Everyday People is the sad story of what lurks beneath apparently ordinary people's exteriors. It is also about how easily people make completely bad choices, which can escalate into tragic and terrible situations. From this vantage point, the book is completely successful. It makes the reader cringe more and more as each chapter pulls the characters further into a mire of murder and mayhem. The cover promises the reader a new appreciation of the dark side of people's psyches after reading this tale, and it delivers. The Yagers know how to entrap the reader, as well as the characters in their tales. An entertaining and eerie read, Just Your Everyday People is also well crafted storytelling.

4 out of 5 stars neatly packed, fast paced thriller.......2001-09-23

This neatly packed, fast paced thriller is a real page turner that should distract the reader from the reality of current terrifying events. It would make an exciting movie.
Two young, surburban couples are long time friends. One pair is ordinary, naive with wholesome values--what one expects from "everyday people" The other couple conceals a sociopathic nature until a shared routine happy hour at a local bar leads to attempted blackmail, theft, mayhem and murder, drawing the ordinary couple into a chilling ordeal sure to keep the reader in suspense.

5 out of 5 stars chilling page turner.......2001-07-19

page turner! I am an avid reader in constant search of books that promise to enthrall and entertain me. 'Just Your Everyday People' delivers on its promise to do just that. This is a gripping suspense novel about characters so real and 'ordinary' that one is immediately and easily swept into their lives. It is a story about jealousy, greed and unspeakable betrayal. It's about ordinary people whose human frailities propel them down a twisted road filled with murder, mayhem and sheer terror. 'Just Your Everyday People' is a thoroughly entertaining and satisfying read. It is the kind of book I search for -- an intriguing suspenseful page turner. I found it impossible to put this book down and the story haunted me long afterwards. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars non-stop twists and lots of fun.......2001-07-15

An easy to read, high-energy look at people who could be your next door neighbors. The twists and turns are never expected, in this suspense novel where it's not easy to tell the good guys (or gals) from the bad.

In a land of great marvels, the greatest is simply survival.

          5 out of 5 stars Research-Based Exercise Advice.......2005-10-11

What I most like about this book is Birgitta's commitment to exercise advice that is research-based and medically sound. That criteria is THE most important thing to any pregnant woman looking for information.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing new under the sun...........2004-09-01

I wasn't sure who this book was for. If you are moderately-to-very out of shape you won't really see yourself in these pages. Everything from the tone to the models to the testimonials (all from folks in excellent condition at the start of their pregnancies) seem tailor-made for the extremely fit crowd. However, if you are a regular exerciser, there's not much here that will be news to you. It's not a terrible choice for those who haven't done much strength training before, and there is some good info on adapting (or abandoning) some of the standards during pregnancy. There is a bit of annoying name dropping to get through-apparently, if someone trains B-list celebrities (Jane Seymore??), obviously that's credential enough... It's worth a look, but I wish I hadn't spent the $. Better to pick this one up at the library.

          5 out of 5 stars A lifesaver!!!.......2004-01-06

This is the most valuable prenatal information I've ever found. Thanks to this book, my doctor and I were able to determine the most suitable exercises for me at my age of 42 and carrying a very high risk pregnancy. I was ordered on bedrest at 19 weeks, but was able to do many exercises from the high risk chapter. Thanks to Birgitta's incredible knowledge and expertise on High risk pregnancy exercise, I was able to make it to 38 weeks. And my doctor wasn't sure I'd make it through 30 weeks...but we are certain that the strength I was able to maintain by these very modified exercises may have saved my 7lbs. 4oz, baby girls life. Or at least her health. My OB is now ordering all of her pregnant patients to exercise for healthier outcomes. A MUST READ FOR ANY PREGNANT WOMAN. helen.
