Book Description
From the Nobel Prize-winning author of Love in the Time of Cholera, a startling new novel -- the story of a doomed love affair between an unruly copper-haired girl and the bookish priest sent to oversee her exorcism.
Of Love and Other Demons is set in a South American seaport in the colonial era, a time of viceroys and bishops, enlightened men and Inquisitors, saints and lepers and pirates. Sierva Maria, only child of a decaying noble family, has been raised in the slaves' courtyard of her father's cobwebbed mansion while her mother succumbs to fermented honey and cacao on a faraway plantation. On her twelfth birthday the girl is bitten by a rabid dog, and even as the wound is healing she is made to endure therapies indistinguishable from tortures. Believed, finally, to be possessed, she is brought to a convent for observation. And into her cell stumbles Father Cayetano Delaura, the Bishop's protege, who has already dreamed about a girl with hair trailing after her like a bridal train; who is already moved by this kicking, spitting, emaciated creature strapped to a stone bed. As he tends to her with holy water and sacramental oils, Delaura feels "something immense and irreparable" happening to him. It is love, "the most terrible demon of all." And it is not long before Sierra Maria joins him in his fevered misery.
Unsettling and indelible, Of Love and Other Demons haunts us with its evocation of an exotic world while it treats, majestically the most universal experiences known to woman and man.
Natasha Richardson's film credits include Nell, Widow's Peak, The Comfort of Strangers, and The Handmaid's Tale. She has appeared on stage in Anna Christie, High Society, Hamlet, and A Midsummer Night's Dream, among others.

Garcia Marquez is splendid!.......2007-04-11
This is one of the best books I have read from the best Latin American authors. If you know spanish, I recomend you read it in spanish since the language is better developed and the meaning of the story is deeper. I read it in spanish and after I began to read it, I could not stop.
Of Love and Other Demos is a master piece like other novels from my beloved Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Thought provoking novella.......2006-03-15
In this novella, Marquez explores magical realism--he fuses elements of ordinary events with dreamlike, mythical qualities. The novel's setting is Colonial South America amidst the backdrop of the Inquisition. Sierva Maria, the only child of Marquis de Casalduero, is primarily reared by her housekeeper, Dominga de Adviento "a formidable black woman who ruled the house with an iron fist." Sierva is raised amongst the slaves and becomes vested in their languages and customs.
On her twelfth birthday she is bitten by a dog infected with rabies. Her father, believing Sierva to be possessed by the devil, sends her to the Convent of Santa Clara at the behest of the Bishop. There she is confined to a "solitary pavilion" that had been used as a prison for years. Father Cayetano, a protege and confidante of the Bishop is vested with the mission of "exorcising" the demons from Sierva Maria. He instead becomes possessed with a deep love for her and "burn[s] with the revelation that something immense and irreparable had begun to occur in his life."
One of the central themes Marquez artfully develops is the oppressive and unbending nature of the Catholic Church and how it uses religion to wield its power and stifle any dissension within its realm. Marquez develops this theme by showing how anyone even remotely different from the canons of the Church's perceived notions of propriety such as Sierca and Abernucio (the Jewish physician) is automatically clouded with suspicion and distrust. After spending time observing Sierva at the convent, Father Cayetano, embracing the dictates of reason, suggests that what seems demonic about Sierva--her expertise in multiple African dialects, eating goat testicles, etc. was simply a product of her upbringing with the slaves. The Bishop immediately discounts his rational explanation and warns "The Enemy makes better use of our intelligence than of our errors." Marquez masterfully uses the tale of a simple love story with a basic plot to reflect and meditate on larger questions regarding the hierarchy of power, class, and religion in society.
Books are Worthless (or , On: Love, the Only Demon).......2005-11-10
This small piece of gem by Gabo is one of the most fascinating books as far as I'm concerned. To me, the most fascinating character in this book is that of Abrenuncio, a Portuguese Jewish physician, hated by the church and loved by his patients. A man who knows where he stands ("Sex is a talent, and I do not have it."), a man with his feet firmly planted on the ground ("Books are worthless; life has helped me to cure diseases that other doctors cause with their medicines"), and one who understands the fundamentals of healing ("No medicine cures what happiness cannot.". Without a second thought, I would sell my soul to Devil twice over to achieve his qualiities.
Over the years I have met many pompous, wise people, whose unlimited arrogance (because they read some books) and feeling of intellectual superiority have often made me wonder if they know that the world is more than just books. Gabo tells us in this book that the only real source of wisdom that lies in front of us is our life, not books.
This book also highlights the issue of the animosity suffered by a learned man, when his views and actions are in contrast to the interests of the section of the society that controls it. This is a very real situation anyday anywhere in the world.
However, the major theme of the book is (either presence or absense of) love. Can love conquer everything? Gabo's answer is direct, honest and simple: Yes, it can; but it will do you more good if you don't believe in it.
Can one deny love? Or can one evade it? Perhaps not. To drive this point home, the ever irreverent persona in Gabo makes his presence felt, when he makes the exorcist, one of the most knowledgeable and favorable priests, finally fall in love with the victim, whom he comes to exorcise!
literary craftsmanship.......2005-10-01
This novel is a quick read that is thick with gorgeous prose. GGMarquez is a master of juxtaposing human love and suffering. An attack on the intolerance of the catholic church runs through the novel and is supported by perfect imagery. The characters come alive and their suffering and joys become the readers.
Pure, lush, fantasy, boiling over..........2004-01-29
I couldn't put this down, read it in one afternoon on a bench by the bay. Marquez has created a world entirely of his own, this isn't Columbia in the 17th Century, nor is it some dreamscape stalked by nightmarish figures. This is a tale of robust power, dealing with lust, love, sickness, transgression, madness, faith, frailty, flesh and loss. In this world presented to us, each of them swirl together until you can't distinguish them from each other. The lives of the people in the pages: the rotting, resigned father; the impassioned atheist doctor; the brilliant, doomed and tormented priest; the deluded sex-crazed mother; the drooping slaves; the vindictive nuns... and at the heart- the crimson-haired little girl as a primal force of nature- incomprehensible, vibrant, fierce... A resounding laugh in the faces of the Stoics who intoned- "Live According to Nature." The writing bursts with energy, with poetry, with blood and bile and pale venom- you can almost smell the pages sweat. Few books evoke so much with so little (it's very short, after all). This is a fine novel, an abundant and wretched dream that will possess you for as long as you immerse yourself in it.

excelent book.......2007-10-10

UNIQUE UNIQUE UNIQUE - The unmatchable style of Sam Yulish
The Hesitant Psychic is so wonderfully different that I found it very difficult to put down. I thought I had read every kind of paranormal story, but these are so incredibly new and well written that I laughed, I cried, and I shuddered, as the author took me on a marvelous roller coaster ride through the repository of my emotions.
The stories in The Hesitant Psychic make me want to think deeper about my life and the lives of those close to me. The stories are fresh and unique and stir up all of my emotions. The paranormal slant is positively original. Yulish has done it again with his second unique book!
------ Patricia Anne Dennison, author of STOP THE VOICES and THE SPELL OF SAINT CYRIL'S CEMETERY
Unique and fresh, just as his first book, WHERE HAVE ALL THE HIPPIES GONE? which has sold world wide, and is now in a revised edition.

Lyrical and rich!.......2003-10-06
I do not wish to reveal the plot but can say with absolute certainty that this is a most lyrical and delicious book. The characters are spell binding and as always Gabriel Garcia Marquez weaves a tale that creates in the reader a hunger for more. It is well worth the time to read. It will transport you. A very inexpensive vacation if you ask me.

Book Description
Philosophical Fiction: This book is designed to broaden personal, social, and spiritual perceptions beyond definition, that the reader may embrace their uniqueness, heal psychological wounds, and confidently forge their personal path. The story, in the spirit of Richard Bach and Carlos Castaneda, catalyzes the reader into their own personal journey as the pages are turned. A sage of unseen worlds guides a woman into herself, and frees her into the quintessential meaning of life beyond the written word. Packed with cutting-edge philosophical insights, and powerful psychological understandings, this book sheds light on the human psyche and multi-dimensional realities, bringing one into a more fruitful life experience.
Excerpt: I crossed the State Line, entering the bountiful universe within, seeking a sage of unseen worlds known as The Fool on the Hill. There I stood in a desert bright, lively with groundhog and bird, cacti plump and prickly pear abundant.
There My Fool stood, staring at me. I shook my head and blinked. His face seemed like the moon, His eyes like whirling saucers. I half expected His voice to sound like thunder, or a saxophone, or the sound of one hand clapping; however, His tone was normal like any other, as if He were no big deal, as if life were no big deal.
He said, "Welcome to the real world, Susan."
Was my world not real?
I raised my brows and peeked over my shoulder, staring into the mundane world from whence I came. I viewed a mirror that had no beginning, nor end--this mirror that reflected the outer world. My image was simple; female, five foot two, long brown hair, hazel eyes; adventure bound in my long sleeved navy blue tee shirt and jeans, brown hiking boots, and russet knapsack slung over my right shoulder. Just a woman. Just a simple ordinary woman. His voice flowed low behind me, then inside me. "Peer beyond the image. What do you see?"
I stared into my face. "A wife, mother of two, psychotherapist, writer, and humanitarian."
"Look deeper still. What do you see?"
"A seeker . . . of--myself."
From behind me, I felt Him smile; a smile so gentle, it roared in my heart.
"Bravo," He said, "If you dare see more, turn away from the mirror, away from the outer world reflection."
I turned away from the mirror. As I faced Him, I gulped. I didn't mean to gulp. It just came out.
"You can return to the mirror Susan, if you choose."
I shook my head vigorously. "No, I can't." I bowed my head inadvertently staring at my heart. "I'm losing myself," I glanced at the mirror, "out there."
He stood before me. His body seemed like liquid energy, clear steam, not as solid as mine; for My Fool on the Hill dwelled in the half world between the corporeal and other side of life, what many call death.
His whimsical eyes penetrated deep into the ailing part of me, like a daddy tickling His child, saying, `ah, there's much to smile about.'
"I am ready," I said, "I must do this."
He nodded. "Very well then. Your odyssey begins."

A Gem of a Story.......2007-09-22
Susan Kalior has given us a wonderful story. She takes us on a journey through love and life, deep inside an unseen world within the mind. Imagine, if you would, a story in the tradition of Castaneda with the addition of unbridled emotion and feelings. Throughout the story I found myself pausing for a while to meditate on the insights that were expressed so well.
Thank you Susan for sharing your wisdom with us.
A book with many hidden treasures!.......2007-09-10
Some definitons: Sage: A mentor in spiritual and philosophical topics who is known for profound wisdom. Facade: An artificial or deceptive front. MetaPhysical: Meta means beyond and so MetaPhysical means beyond the physical reality. The fool on the hill: Well, I'm not positive but I feel this is the part of us that takes risks, that embraces change, that drops all facades. It seems that the Sage and The Fool on the hill reside within us. When we find our Sage, only then can we obtain answers and
direction for our lives.
Here is some Analysis without the Paralysis: This book has several hidden treasures that have inspired me to look deeper into myself to find answers I know cannot be found in the external world. In particular, there is a discussion regarding relationships. "The best relationships are those involving two people who have great relationships with themselves." As I am entering a new relationship at this time, this one sentense speaks volumes to me. To me, this means my best shot at a long, healthy relationship is to first be content and at peace with myself. This is not the type of book that you just scan and then move on. It requires a bit of introspection on your part. I really had to stop and think about how her words apply to my life. Another example: "What happens to you is less significent then what you do with what happens to you." This is profound and far reaching. To me, it means life comes at you but we still have control over how we react and thus control over our lives. How many times in my life I wish I had reacted differently to what "came at me".
This writer, I feel, has a special talent, and I'm particularly impressed with her experience as a counseler. I have found literally dozens of wisdoms, throughout this book, that have made me think about my life and how I can improve it, embrace change and keep growing.
A must read book!.......2007-09-05
This book really helped get through some big changes in my life,
including the death of a loved one. I feel more confident about myself
and life in general. I also have a greater awareness about other worldly
realities, and the synchronicity of all things. I recommend this book to anyone going through troubled times and in need of inspiration!
A great read for anyone with an open mind........2007-09-03
This book inspired me to take a more positive outlook on life. It details a journey from a place of vulnerability to a stronger, spiritually satisfying place. I recommend this to anyone looking for more meaning, more happiness, or simply just more.

Penzler Pick, May 2000: Dibdin's six Aurelio Zen novels (beginning with Ratking, which won the 1988 Golden Dagger Award) are as vividly Italian as if this English writer had never strayed far from the Via Veneto, despite the fact that he has, in fact, been expatriated for several years now to the Pacific Northwest. His hero, a battle-weary but still morally engaged Roman police investigator, is one of the more elegantly vulnerable characters in the genre, a figure who resembles Nicolas Freeling's Inspector Van der Valk in his ability to bring triumph to situations and yet never have them seem like victories. Moreover, like Van der Valk, Zen's greatest talent seems to be for making new enemies among his colleagues.
In Blood Rain, Zen has been exiled to Sicily under the guise of acting as a sort of watchdog, observing a recently reestablished anti-Mafia taskforce. By the nature of the locale--Sicily makes its own rules--the fact that the work of this commission will inevitably be compromised seems clear. But where the cracks in the system will reveal themselves is harder to figure out until, of course, it's too late. Distracted by his dying mother back in Rome and by the island's perverse feuds and even stranger loyalties, and paying not quite enough attention to the professional travails of his beautiful adopted daughter, Carla, a computer specialist, Zen travels his usual idiosyncratic route to a crime's resolution. As always, he is most intrigued by the ambiguities of the situation--and is doomed to be the sacrificial scapegoat.
Dibdin seems to be incapable of writing a bad book, and the Zen novels are his best work. Blood Rain causes the reader to gasp frequently in genuine surprise, as well as in admiration for the way Dibdin accomplishes his effects. The intensity of these sensations is something to be grateful for, since most books these days, even with their ability to shock, make us feel so little. --Otto Penzler
Book Description
Aurelio Zen—cynical and tough, yet worn down from years of law enforcement—has just been given the worst assignment he could imagine. He has been sent to the heart of hostile territory: Sicily, the ancient, beautiful island where blood has been known to flow like wine, and the distinction between the police and the criminals is a fine one. Even worse, he has been sent to spy on the elite anti-Mafia squad.
The only thing that makes the job palatable—and takes his mind off routine details like the rotting body found in a remote train car—is that Zen's adopted daughter, Carla, is also in town. But life becomes precarious for Carla when she stumbles upon some information she'd be better off not knowing and befriends a local magistrate on the Mafia's most wanted list. What ensues is a breakneck plot of amazing complexity that culminates in a stunning finale. Blood Rain, emotionally gripping and defiantly original, is surely one of Dibdin's finest works.

Aurelio Zen fights the mafia in Sicily.......2007-02-02
A train leaves Palermo on 23 July for a long slow trip along the single-track line through the interior of Sicily and then disappears from official view for the best part of a week until 29 July.
One wagon is found in a station called Passo Martino, south of Catania, and when people report to the police that a dreadful smell emanates from the wagon, Carmen Consuela is sent to investigate the matter. The results of the examination show that a corpse has been rotting inside the wagon for at least a week. Apparently the victim was riding inside the wagon when the door closed thus locking the intruder inside. In the sealed metal freight wagon standing for days at a time on isolated sidings in the glare of the sun, a hypothetical thermometer might well have shown temperatures in the mid-forties.
In the absence of any information it would be almost impossible to identify the victim except for a mysterious scribble in the contents box on the wagon's way bill which is eventually deciphered as being not limoni - lemons - but Liminia. Could this refer to the Liminia family in Catania who run one of the principal Mafia clans in that city and in Torino? Is the victim the eldest son and presumptive heir who has been rumoured to be missing for over a week?
Set against the backdrop of the 3000-year-old city of Catania and in the shadow of the smouldering volcano of Etna, Mr Dibdin's book reveals Aurelio Zen in one of his toughest and most dangerous case.
Boring to me.......2006-11-07
I have read the books in order and liked them all. However this one I did not like. I couldn't find enough plot. Too much filler with Sicely etc. I skimmed much of the book.
Wow. How did I miss this guy?.......2005-06-05
Well. I'll confess. I missed Michael Dibdin. This is why reading is so much fun. You can have your starting lineup, say Parker, George, Ambrose, Bevor, Pelecanos, and then you literally stumble onto a Child, a Lethem, and a Dibdin.
I felt I was reading a travelogue of a place I had never been to and simultaneously meeting this quiet, unassuming detective, Aurelio Zen (what a great name), all too or very human, with all the frailties of a real human even down to the cigarettes, all along and on a canvas of murder most foul.
I can't wait for the rest. But this time, I'm going to read them from the beginning. Too confusing the other way. 5 stars. Larry Scantlebury
Read "Blood Rain" before "And Then You Die".......2005-05-02
I tried Michael Dibdin years ago and didn't like writing or his Aurelio Zen character one little bit. What could I have been thinking? I must have been going through a fairly impatient period in life ... that might explain it. Because these small books are not to be read lightly. They are very literary and beautifully plotted and Aurelio Zen is one of the most unique characters you'll find in the genre. Not only does Dibdin give us a horrific look into local Sicilian politics (and very believably so), but he gives us a clear-eyed view of Italian culture as a whole and how it contributes to the crimes at hand. And yet it is a loving, very eloquent portrayal. And the murders are almost secondary to the trip, at least until the very end. Note the inclusion of computers and networks as the vehicles for danger and intrigue. This has a little of the flavor of Mankell's "Firewall". You'll want to read "Blood Rain" as a set piece with "And Then You Die".
Personal favourite.......2004-06-08
This, the seventh in the Aurelio Zen series, is my personal favourite (of the 8 I have read - Medusa yet to come).
This one has reasonably complex plotting and at first it was a little difficult to decide whether to try to keep track of which mafia group was which. In the end, I just let it flow, and it did come together in the end.
Like with most of the characters in a Zen novel, you can never be sure to what extent anyone (including Zan!) is a 'goodie' or a 'baddie'. There are precarious few 'goodies'!!
An excellent addition to the series. The next book "And Then You Die" is like a coda to this one - so make sure you don't read it first by accident!

I'd almost call it magic.......2006-11-21
This book is very inspiring and comforting. Ever see the movie "MirrorMask"? This is the RL equivilant of "A very useful book" at least as far as spiritual/mystic questors go. But its not a key to bending spoons, or casting curses, or trying to figure out lottery numbers. It's a key to finding peace with yourself and the universe and god, infinitely more powerful and valuble.
Inspiring, accessible, and very usable spiritual information.......2006-10-22
The information for each pathway is only a few pages long (so you can read a short section with coffee in the morning), but it is packed with wonderful insights, inspiration, and most importantly ways to really use the information. Each pathway has a suggested meditation and ideas for integrating the concept into your life. Wonderful book!
Accessible Interpretations of the 99 Aspects of the Divine.......2006-09-01
This is a fine and accessible review of the 99 aspects traditionally attributed by Moslems to Allah (God). It is written by an American with many years of study and involvement in the Sufi and Islamic traditions (among others areas of expertise).
His interpretations are insightful, and although many liberties have been taken, they convey the more positive aspects of each name (wazifa). He offers the more tradition associations for each name as well, and this is a helpful contrast. Meditations on each name will be useful for some.
Overall an excellent reference and useful for personal insight, wazifa work, innerwork, and as a reference. Recommended.
A Treasure.......2006-04-21
Superb little book, very inspiring, an initiation in itself. A
must for students of Sufism and world religions, and would
enhance depth and richness of spiritual experience for any
reader.
Too bad this book is printed on fragile newsprint as regular
paper would have a longer life, but the other side to that
coin is that it shows starkly the transitoriness of worldly
life.
inspiring.......2006-02-24
I have found using the book as part of my daily spiritual practice very inspiring.
Book Description
For those who have reached a level of understanding of the illusory nature of the world around us and seek to discern the reality that lies behind it, Sufi meditation - muraqabah - is the doorwaye through which we can pass from this realm of delusion into the realm of realities. Through meditation the seeker has a means to return to his or her perfected original self. Muraqabah is the fastest and most direct method for advancing in spiritual degrees. It is in fact a migration from one's self to God. Through meditation higher states of consciousness are attained, and the connection to the seeker's true inner self is established, built-up and maintained, providing the practictioner with a lifeline to the Divine Presence. This book presents the spiritual background behind the practice of meditation, then takes the reader step-by-step, through the basics of spiritual connection based on the ancient teachings of the Naqshbandi Sufi masters of Central Asia.

That is the ultimate Spiritual Path, (Forget the Healing aside).......2007-02-22
This small book does by far shatter its cover title,
It appears smaller than it's REAL SIZE.
You thought you would be reading a traditional healing subject...hold...
The material here contains a rare World-Class Spiritual Gem, the touch of a saint, a connection to the teaching source...
The book's pace is fast, brief, and inclusive, no word is extra, the book's peak is the Gem which I would leave to the readers to discover and try for themselves....then it calms down to open up a new space of human energy science...but frankly...that is only the trail of the blaze that has given the book it's published title.
With all due respect and love for this great master.
I hereby cannot express further more.
An important contribution to Islamic Studies and Meditation Studies.......2006-01-12
Sufi meditation (muraqabah) is a mental doorway through which practitioners can discern the reality that lies behind the illusory nature of the world around them. It is through this mediation that seekers have a means to return to their perfected original selves and advance in spiritual degrees from themselves to God through higher states of consciousness. An important contribution to Islamic Studies and Meditation Studies, "The Healing Power Of Sufi Meditation" is the collaborative effort of as-Sayyid Nurjan Mirahmadi and Hedieh Mirahmadi offering the reader with an informed and informative introduction to a path of divine enlightenment that has been traveled by the great spiritual leaders of the Sufi tradition. Also very highly recommended for students of Sufi traditions is The Sufi Science Of Self-Realization: A Guide To The Seventeen Ruinous Traits, The Ten Steps To Discipleship, And The Six Realities Of The Heart" by Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani (193040929X, $19.95).

Book Description
For the Sufis, the healing of the sick is considered to be the most important of all services to humanity. For the first time in the West, the author presents the secret principles and practices of this divine science, based on the 800-year tradition of the Chishti Order. Among the many topics covered are dietary recommendations of the Prophet, the preparation of herbal formulas, healing with essential oils, illnesses arising at various stages of the soul's evolution, fasting and prayer, talismans, and the "infallible remedy."
Customer Reviews:
Wholistic health.......2007-05-30
Helping the sick and suffering creatures of God is very important for Sufis, these Islam mystics. This is why this book is written. In this book you'll find a whole definition of health, what causes illness, how eating the right food, fasting, salat and tawidh help you stay in good health. You'll notice the importance of breathing. This is a good introduction to Sufism also, if you are new to the subject.
Refreshing, as the breath.......2003-05-13
The science of heart and breathing is just breath taking. Wonderful book for individuals with desire to learn and an open mind on Sufism and Islam. The Sufism is truly religion of the heart, winged heart. Beleiving is being, breath is everything.
Eye-opening.......2002-06-29
I wrote, years ago, that "some of his recommendations would be considered to be controversial within Islam."
I now think that I was writing from a position of ignorance. It's amazing how a lifetime of conditioning can prevent you from seeing things in an unbiased fashion.
2-3 years on, I'd like to offer my apologies - and many thanks!

The best introduction for sufi students.......2002-02-25
Despite its focus on healing and the fact that it was written by a Chishti sheikh, this book provides the best introduction to sufism for any serious students affiliated to any sufi order. Some of the ideas portrayed in this book are very difficult to come by, such as the Quran being a breathing exercise, or the science of ta'widh (talismans). I didn't pay much attention to the sections on healing, but I even learned how to pray from this book.
