Powerful, Rich History of a man with a beautiful Imagination........2007-09-15
I just finished reading this poignant, rich and riveting look into the life of a man who was driven by his ego. A very talented story teller and a masterful charmer, he converted thousands in his day to following his church. The self proclaimed "one and only church". Brodie does her research thoroughly and completely, giving us a look at Joseph Smith the Man. Not a diluted form of history - or a sculpted version, but the facts. It's a must read. From a boy's curiosity about the Indian mounds and treasure seeking, to a man who marries over 50 women and runs for President of the United States. Whether you are a historian buff or just have an inquisitive mind regarding the mormon roots, this book is by far the best book I've read yet. Brodie was consequently ex-communicated from the church for NOT leaving out key components that the church wanted her to - thus giving us a true account of this historical man. A bright, eager, greedy and fallible man.
Excellent biographical study of Joseph Smith........2007-07-19
Fawn Brodie, former history professor at UCLA and former Latter Day Saint, in her above-titled book gives a fair and honest history of the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Joseph Smith. From his early days using folk magic as a "treasure hunter" to his first vision and beyond, Dr. Brodie tries to present all sides of the enigmatic founder of Mormonism (which isn't always done in books about Joseph Smith). Court transcripts, afadavits of former neighbors, testimonies of faithful followers, witnesses to the golden plates, Joseph Smith's own version of events - Dr. Brodie allows all these voices to speak in this biography. Her writing is interesting, entertaining, informative, and she isn't afraid to draw conclusions based on the evidence at hand. Perhaps she reaches a bit too far in psychoanalysis of J.S., but that's part of what makes this book the page-turner that it is. One doesn't have to agree with all her conclusions to enjoy this book. Overall I would rate this book as "excellent."
Everyone interested in Mormon History or Mormonism should read this book. .......2007-07-14
This book is a classic, and is generally recognized as such. The topic, which is the life of Joseph Smith, found its ideal author in Fawn Brodie, a Mormon who was on the verge of excommunication and who as about as sympathetic to Smith as an honest historian could be. One is tempted to say that Smith is presented, warts and all. But it would be more helpful to say that Smith is presented, virtues and all, because a man who concocts what purports to be holy scripture, who fakes divine revelation, who organizes three Waco-type compounds, who institutes militias and secret societies to kill his enemies, who decrees polygamy to satify the lusts of himself and his male colleagues, who orders the destruction of his enemies and who lies about most of these things probably has more warts than virtues.
Brodie wrestles constantly with the issue of how a man of such limited education and rather obvious fraudulent intent could attract thousands of dedicated followers. It is no wonder that Brodie in her later works became so attracted to psycho-history. She advances a rather attractive hypothesis which suggests how Smith could have deluded himself into believing his own nonsense: Since all our thoughts are the product of previous states of mind, and since these states include all the factors which go into our perceptions, concepts and mental "programs", there is no essential difference between our control over our waking thoughts and our control over our dreams, reveries, and other semi-conscious states. We just think there is, because the illusion of control is part of the nature of the mental state we call "consciousness." If that is so, then it can be argued that a "revelation" which derives from our past state of mind is no more originated by our own will than the conscious perception that we are being visited by the angel Moroni.
Of course, this line of thought comes dangerously close to solipsism, and solipsism comes dangerously close to autotheism (if there is nothing else in the universe but oneself, then everything there is must be an extension of oneself, and hence one must be God). Toward the end of his life, Smith's megalomania was indeed headed in this direction.
Brodie does a wonderful job describing how Charismatic Smith must have been. To have persuaded people of real intelligence and ability like Brigham Young and his own wife Emma into believing and supporting him throughout his career, and to have, as she puts it, "Caused men to see visions" is no mean feat. And to have created a religion which, for all its faults, is far more admirable than its own founder bespeaks one of the most fascinating characters in American history. Everyone interested in religion, psychology, and American History should read this book.
A Book That Deserves Rich Praise.......2007-05-25
Much has been written about this classic biography of Joseph Smith, and even after sixty years, the writing is fresh and brilliant. If she were writing today, however, Brodie's book would be twice as long because so much new information has come to light--especially about Joseph Smith's involvement in magic. See D. Michael Quinn's massively documented, yet very readable, "Early Mormonism and the Magic World View."
Early Mormonism and the Magic World View
You know that Fawn Brodie has come a long way when even Mormons can praise it. In "Joseph Smith and the Beginnings of Mormonism," the distinguished Mormon historian Richard Bushman wrote:
"As notable for its journalistic brilliance as for its scholarship, `No Man Knows My History' presented Riley's arguments and findings in a form more palatable to twentieth-century tastes" (p. 191).
I would say this in criticism of Brodie. She completely dismisses the Spalding theory. While I believe that Brodie is correct in saying that Joseph Smith composed the Book of Mormon himself, the similarities of the plot elements in "Manuscript Found" are troubling. They insure that Solomon Spalding's ghost will never rest.
It seems possible that Joseph Smith could have heard about Spalding's story without actually having seen it. Thus, it could have had an influence on Joseph Smith.
Nevertheless, here are the plot elements of "Manuscript Found" compared to those of the Book of Mormon (plot elements never listed by Mormon writers for fear of opening a can of worms--Brodie did not list them either).
In about 1812, the Reverend Solomon Spalding wrote a novel about two races in ancient America. Spalding lived in Connecut, Ohio, less than 200 miles from Palmyra (on the Great Lake's trade route, so traveler could have told Joseph Smith about Spalding's story).
Spalding described an ancient American civilization in as much detail as is found in the Book of Mormon (1830). Spalding even read passages of his novel to his congregation (thus insuring that it was spread far and wide).
So we have two stories, each purporting to be a history, and each featuring a "translator," who finds an ancient account of a lost white American civilization.
In each story, the civilization is described in detail, including its laws, religion, priests, money system, tools, animals, agricultural products, as well as a magical seer stone possessed by its prophets. Letters are exchanged between leaders (the Book of Mormon has "epistles"), "Censors" are the rulers ("Judges" in the Book of Mormon), and lists of generals are given for armies of tens of thousands.
The dead from great battles are heaped up in mounds (false explanations for the orderly Indian burial mounds of real history). In both works, the white race has continuous wars with a darker-skinned race, but hundreds of years of peace are established by a great teacher ("Bosaka" in "Manuscript Found" and Christ in the Book of Mormon).
This extraordinarily long period of peace ends in a battle near a hill. In this last battle in which the white race is exterminated, there is an incident in which a man is beheaded in a sword fight.
Each account also claims that the ancient Americans possessed the modern knowledge that the earth rotates around the sun, rather than vise verse. Both stories feature an item of technology consistent with the 1800s, rather than thousands of years ago. The Book of Mormon has submarines; the American Robert Fulton built his famous Nautilus in 1800; Spalding's story has a hot-air balloon (note the famous French balloon flights of the 1780s). These hot technologies of the day were story elements of the newly-born American literature. Spalding and Smith were perhaps the first American writers to include them in a novel.
There are other coincidences. The world's first reconstructed mammoth skeleton, "the ninth wonder of the world," went on display in Philadelphia in 1802, and coincidentally "elephants" are found in the Book of Mormon (1830) and "mamoons" in "Manuscript Found" (1812).
One would think that the plot elements of the two stories would at least be discussed by Mormon writers out to disprove the Spalding Theory. But no, they shift the focus to how did Joseph Smith come to read Spalding's manuscript? Some critics said that the link between the stories was Syndey Rigdon, the first major convert to Mormonism. Rigdon had lived in Pittsburg and was known at the printshop where Spalding sent his manuscript.
Although I believe that Joseph Smith was the author of the Book of Mormon, the "Pittsburgh coincidence" has never set well with me. Like a detective investigating an unsolved murder, the possibility that Smith in some way borrowed from Spalding story will never be laid to rest.
Curiously, one Mormon writer in criticising the Spalding Theory said there are "no complex Chiasms appear in MS (Manuscript Found)." See "Refuting the Critics: Evidences of the Book of Mormon's Authenticity," by Michael Griffith, p. 81. Griffith's statement is an admission that "chiamus" (parallelisms in Hebrew poetry) were around in 1812. They have been pointed out by proponents of the Spalding Theory. See my review of "By the Hand of Mormon," by Terryl L. Givens. Click here: By the Hand of Mormon: The American Scripture that Launched a New World Religion
Robert Silverberg in the "Mound Builders: The Archaeology of a Myth" is dispassionate about these similarities of plot elements to those of the Book of Mormon. "Neutral observers," he writes, "generally suggest the possibility that both works drew their inspiration from the fund of Mound Builder legends then in circulation, leaving aside the question of possible borrowing by Smith from Spaulding" (p. 96).
Silverberg's book is a must-read for anyone interested in the world of Joseph Smith and the great Mound Builder myth. Click here: Mound Builders

Unfortunate.......2007-05-25
First off, I am a faithful member of the church. That said, history can get whitewashed a little with time and I totally understand that. Fawn Brodie was given full access to church historical records and chose to squander the faith placed in her by the church in drawing wild conclusions and making unsubstantiated insinuations. If her conclusions were the only ones to be made, why would the church have allowed her access to its files? They would have hidden them. Brodie pretends she was a good Mormon who was shocked at what she discovered. If you believe that then I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you. She was looking for justification for her loss of faith. I can not in good consience recommend this book to anyone. Instead I would recommend Rough Stone Rolling by Richard Bushman, which doesn't give you the standard church picture of Smith, but whose author doesn't harbour an anti-Mormon agenda.

Non essential reading - but examplary of peer objectivity.......2007-03-25
It's unfortunate that readers of both this book and the book it deals with "No Man Knows My History", get so sensitive and threatened if they perceive their own personal beliefs being attacked.
This book is a collection of 7 essays by Brodie's contemporaries and fellow historians, who give OBJECTIVE opinions on her groundbreaking work on the life of Joseph Smith. Unlike most reviewers below, each essayist is able to put aside their personal beliefs and critique Brodie's work from a purely scholarly viewpoint, and so you will not find either apologetics or polemics within this collection.
Each essay's author is able to comment on both the good and the bad of "No Man Knows My History" and is able to do so without standing on a soap box.
My favourite essay was the final one by Roger D. Launius "From Old to New Mormon History: Fawn Brodie and the Legacy of Scholarly Analysis of Mormonism", who acknowledges the effect her work has had on Mormon historians but also highlights the effort spent on addressing the issues she raised has diverted attention away from potentially more beneficial works.
Todd Compton's essay on Brodie's coverage of Smith's plural wives acknowledges the pioneering and exhaustive work Brodie performed in her appendix on the subject, but also highlights the flaws in her assumptions, to the extent of convincingly refuting a few of her claims of Smith's plural marriages - including evidence that Oliver Buell could not possibly be Smith's offspring.
In conclusion, this collection pales in comparison to the work it comments on but it does show an example of objective scholarship when reviewing works as controversial as Brodie's "No Man Knows My History".
A book attempting more damage control........2004-07-11
It is noteworthy that so many essays in this book give the credit due to the wise and courageous Fawn Brodie.
Yet this is a book attempting damage control for the Mormon Church. Damage that was mostly created by the egotism of its first two leaders.
This situation of opinions brings to mind one of my favourite New Testament sayings attributed to Jesus.
"Narrow is the way that leads to truth and few there be that find it. Wide is the gate the leads to destruction and many will go in that way." This reflects upon a sad truth that the majority always follows the false advice of directions of executives and are usually misled thereby.
The courageous and wise are a rare breed, and a few of them can be found in every religion.
First of all it should be noted that before one argues forever about the facts, this book was written by a Mormon because she cared for Mormons. As more information becomes available over time Fawn Brodies claims are receiving more and more credibility. The damning evidence poins out that the claim to be a prophet does not make one a true prophet or even make one moral, is building into a flood. A presennt flood of data that all the apologetics and damage control may never abate. The more we dig the worse it gets for JS & BY.
Yet, somehow the endurance of the Mormon people continues on in a functioning community of believers in the LDS religion. Many are innocent, devout and sincere people.
I am not sure if that acclaimed masterpiece, "No man knows my History" annoys average Mormons more because of what it says, or because - after having spent so much energy telling the world about Joseph Smith and his band[with a limited education in the matter], it is disconcerting to hear the evidence of what really went on. To understand the past it is not necessary to cry over it. Or to curse and discredit present historians about it.
It will often be disconcerting to hear about the many of things the church never mentions until too long after one returns for a missionary stint.
I know this feeling, I once had to face the dark history of my own church, a different one.
Read this before you read Brodie's benchmark work........2003-11-15
I'm writing this, in part, to offset the asinine one-star assigned by a Utah reviewer and also because I believe "Reconsidering..." is essential to appreciating and evaluating Brodie's book. Each essayist was excellent. There wasn't one section that was irrelevant, including the one about style that another reviewer criticized. Taken together, the essays provide a superb insight into the strengths and weaknesses of "No Man Knows..." as well as that of its author, Fawn Brodie. Without this "preface", one who is unfamiliar with Joseph Smith and Mormonism is likely to be misled by Brodie's prejudice and misinformation. I am no longer a committed Latter-day Saint, so I'm not blindly defending the faith. It's just that as courageous and innovative as Brodie's book was, it was hardly an even-handed scholarly treatment. Having read dozens of scholarly works on the subject, including many by non-Mormons, her animus against Mormonism and its founder is evident. Still, she deserves credit for her dogged research and masterful presentation. It is a flawed masterpiece. Although "Reconsidering..." is not the literary tour de force that the book it examines is, it is certainly more objective and just as erudite.
Considering Reconsidering..........2000-09-09
One Hundred (and one) years after the Mormon prophet's demise in Nauvoo, Fawn Mckay Brodie had completed a biography of him. This work on Joseph Smith's life has within certain communities has been received both with high priase and acclaim as well as severe condemnation. This controversy alone has raised the status of the book amongst historical, socialogical and literary reviewers. Newell G. Bringhurst brings this dynamic alive with a selection of essays about Brodie's offering from a variety of critical and careful perspectives.
The focus of this collection is not to examine the actual biography of Smith and its validity, rather it is about Brodie's work. Many of the relevant issues discussed about a task as she achieved are brought to light by the various essays: how meticulous was her research, the literary style are prose of the work, the reliability of her sources, the consistency of the work, the conclusions her work leads to, etc. All these were carefully examined by a number of the essayists. Furthermore, the character of Brodie was considered, i.e. her sense of purpose and accomplishment, perhaps her sense of duty. There are amongst each of the essays remarkable insights into both the work on a scholarly level and into the woman who created it all.
The synopsis of the collection as a whole is widespread praise for Brodie's ground-breaking effort. She has treaded into a life with such incredible care and insight which few have since unsuccessfully attempted to match. The biographer is given the credit she desrved with "No Man Knows My History" and later solidly earned with her other works.
I recommend this strongly for those who have an interest in examining historical research and particularly those interested in Brodie's research. For those interested in Mormon research, I suggest both this "Reconsidering..." and Brodie's biography be read concurrently or at least in succession.
A thoughtful compilation.......2000-08-16
Newell Bringhurst, a highly-qualified Mormon historian who is not active in the church, has assembled an interesting and balanced set of essays about Fawn Brodie's extremely important book on Joseph Smith. Devout Mormons reject her work out-of-hand (much of the time, I fear, without reading it--the Church has told them not to). But real historians are not fearful of research and of facts. This is the basis for this collection. The best essay is Bringhurst's own, which gives a clear picture of the difficulties Fawn B. encountered when researching the book, as well as an analysis of the validity of her methods. In spite of heavy indoctrination by family and community, Fawn B. managed to develop a clarity of sight and and desire to penetrate myths and propaganda that made all of her works important and unignorable by future writers on their subjects. The "pro-Mormon" essays in this collection, interestingly, tend to be the most bombastic and evasive--much like the master of apologist irrelevance, Hugh Nibley. Like a good historian, Bringhurst provides the evidence and leaves it to the reader's intelligence to evaluate it for himself--the exact opposite of what Mormon authorities do.

Enjoyable.......2006-02-19
Pleasant addition to the series. Good use of known characters. Interesting situations. Ending too tidy and killed off too many characters if he was planning to broaden the series as the "Star Wars" crowd has done so well.
The Universe Expands.......2005-01-30
I am always glad to see new books in the asimovian universe. This is a continuation of Mark W. Tiedemann's trilogy featuring Derec Avery and Ariel Burgess from the Robot City series. This one adds a few new twists and turns that not only expands the robot conspiracy started by Daneel Olivaw, but also adds more to the cyborg aspect. This is book that needs to be in your Asmiov collection.

The nuggets of wisdom tucked within the pages of this volume are worth MUCH more than the price of the book........2007-09-09
Let me address comments by two other reviewers before I share my opinion.
I share the same concerns about the test for upper back problems that one viewer shared. The test itself may cause injury to the back in some people. However, I am not willing to toss out the wisdom in the rest of the text based on one sidebar that concerns me. I read everything with discernment. This book is nearly a decade old and I expected to cross reference the information in this text with other more recent sources.
A second reviewer stated that this was a book for novices. I believe this is a strength. It is easy to read and understand even if you don't have a medical background. Because it breaks the book into sections by specific health problems, it is easy to skip to that particular section of interest. This book offers an overview of MANY different health conditions. Someone looking for an in-depth study of one specific health condition may want to search for a book that targets that particular health condition. This book does an excellent job of covering a lot of territory in a single volume.
I approached this book wanting to know what enzyme therapy could offer me and/or my family members with specific health conditions. I wanted to expand my knowledge of enzymes and learn how to apply them to improve our health. I wanted THE recipe for a cure for each of the health conditions reviewed. The book did not quite deliver a neat recipe for each *cure*.
What it did deliver was information on how to test for deficiencies and offered case histories of patents who were treated using enzyme therapy and what worked for them.
The enzyme therapies discussed in this book revolve around two brands of enzymes. (Remember, this info is almost ten years old.) A visit to a local health food store and a search online turned up many enzyme supplement choices. Potency levels were vastly different among the brands I investigated. Health practitioners may have access to products that are even more potent than the over-the-counter brands.
I noticed that most of the formulas listed in this book contained four basic enzymes at the beginning of their ingredient lists. Since I wanted to start taking a broad based enzyme formula immediately, I settled on Enzymedica Digest Gold that was available locally. (MUCH cheaper online.)
I contacted the Enzyme Therapy Practitioners hotline listed in the book (1-800-662-2630) to locate a practitioner in my area--Oregon. I was delighted to discover that one of the authors, Lita Lee, is practicing in Portland, Oregon, phone: 503-775-2251. I called her office to obtain more info. For about $235, her office will send out a urine test kit and evaluate the results. The fee includes a one and one half hour office or phone consultation with a 15 minute follow-up. She also sells enzymes.
Dr. Lee has about ten more years of research under her belt since she wrote this book. I hope she will update her book and add or delete information that research has improved upon.
I got more than my moneys worth when I purchased this book.
The Enzyme Cure.......2007-04-02
A very helpful book in understanding how enzymes work in your body and how to help you thyroid to produce them. I have given several copies as gifts.
OK for an intro; no practical info.......2003-04-11
I didn't really like the book. I've found it to be OK for novices who don't know what enzymes are and what they do. I wanted some practical information for a particular condition but didn't find it here. While I won't say "Don't read this book", I wouldn't recommend it to my friends if they wanted some practical information. Glancing over it in a book store is all one would need to grasp most of the information in the book.
Great book.......2002-12-26
This book is excellent, like all books printed by Burton Goldberg. There is about 100 times the health information in this book as in any other health book. By that I mean, you learn about many ways to address each disease discussed, not just by using enzymes.
Enzymes can be used to treat inflammation, TMJ, candidiasis, weight problems, headaches, hormonal imbalances, etc. There is virtually no condition which would not be improved by the use of enzymes.
The only thing I don't like about the book is the author's emphasis on one brand of enzymes. Readers would be better served to know which enzymes a person needs, not which formula from this brand in particular. I hate to criticize this book, as it is excellent, but this is the only weak point. Constantly referring to certain formulations that are only available by prescription seems to make enzymes unattainable to the average reader.
Enzymes are available at any health food store. Ask for anti-inflammatory enzymes, that's usually the only formula they carry, but they are enough to get you started.
For more precise info, the book to read is "The Healing Power of Enzymes" by DicQie Fuller, Ph.D. This book gives lists of symptoms that are likely to occur if you are deficient in a particular enzyme. You can diagnose yourself and work on getting the correct enzyme formula.
For example, people with high cholesterol often have a lipase (fat digesting) enzyme deficiency. Taking lipase supplements will enable you to reduce your cholesterol level quickly.
I definitely suggest you buy this book.
RED FLAG.......2002-04-20
Whatever other pearls of wisdom this book may have to offer, the sidebar on page 212 destroys the author's credibility. It reads, "Do You Have a Neck Problem? A Simple Test Can Tell You" -- then, courtesy of Howard Loomis, D.C., you are instructed to lie on your back on a table with your arms crossed on your chest, raise both legs simultaneously while keeping your knees straight, then lower both your legs. You may not have a neck problem as "diagnosed" by using this technique but CONGRATULATIONS! -- you now will have a lower back problem. Lita Lee, Ph.D., was definitely remiss in not "road testing" this one! I tried this and then found out it is literally a prescription for lower back strain. It cost me three days off work, a trip to the doctor's office, a prescription for an anti-inflammatory and a prescription for a muscle relaxant. Gee, thanks Lita! The only piece of information that would be even more valuable is where to find the nearest trash receptacle so I can do justice to the rest of your book.
