Book Description
When Wesley Lloyd Springer passed away, he left his proper Southern wife two legacies. The first, as befits a gentleman of means, is the whole of his sizeable estate. The second, so astonishing thereupon hangs this wonderful and witty tale.
Miss Julia, recently bereaved and newly wealthy widow, is only slightly bemused when one Hazel Marie Puckett appears at her door with a youngster in tow. But this perfectly practiced composure is quickly reduced when Hazel Marie unceremoniously announces her intentions: the child is Wesley Lloyd's bastard son and, since the man left her penniless, she's leaving little Lloyd in Miss Julia's care. Suddenly, this longtime church member and pillar of her small community finds herself in the center of an unseemly scandal -- and the guardian of a wan nine-year-old whose mere presence will turn her life upside down.
With razor wit and perfect Steel Magnolia poise, Miss Julia speaks her mind indeed -- about a robbery, a kidnapping, and all the other disgraceful goings-on that are precipitated by her husband's death. Fast-paced and charming, with a sure sense of comic drama and a cast of crazy characters, this beguiling novel will delight readers from first page to last.

So Fun & So Funny..........2007-09-30
This series is so much fun. Each book is written in such a manner that they are very easy to read. While some of the antics may be unbelievable, you must remember that it is fiction and there always lies some truth, even in fiction. In every small town in the south there is a "cast of characters." Ms. Ross just brings them to life and adds a little zip. Even in our modern age there still are people out there with old fashion values. It is refreshing to be reminded of that once in a while.
Ross' details are so vivid that you can visualize Miss Julia walking across the yard to the church to have a "few words" with her pastor. You can feel her embarassment when something "unmentionable" is mentioned in her presence.
I hope that there will be many Miss Julia books to follow.
Recommended for anyone who likes a little fun in their reading.
Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind.......2007-08-10
Thia book was an absolutely enjoyable read. Looking for a great summer read or a book you can't put down at the beach? This is it!
A wonderfully good book.......2007-07-10
finally I am able to give a book a high rating! I've been in a slump with the last few books that I've read, but Miss Julia is a great read. I stayed up til 2am trying finish. Everytime I try to put it down, it kept calling me. The thing I like most about Miss Julia is she definetely speaks her mind, just think of your southern belle grandmother...a kidnapper and an accused nymphomaniac...oh my! I can't wait to read Miss Julia's next adventure.
Ann Ross.......2007-05-12

Great book!.......2007-03-29
One of the only places to find many of the short works by this wonderful author. Definitely an enjoyable read!
Worthy posthumous addition to RZ's legacy.......2007-01-03
Roger Zelazny wrote some of the finest fiction I've ever had the pleasue to read. Although this collection of shorts does not match the quality of his other anthologies, there are still plenty of stories that ensnare the mind and entice the imagination. The Amber shorts at the end of the book made me want to reread the entire series for the umpteenth time. A gifted writer who was taken all too soon, Roger Zelazny truly has channelled some Manna from Heaven in this compendium.
Many answers.......2006-02-25
Good book, sure answers a lot of questions that were left unanswered in Zelazny's last Amber novel, as well as expanding on a few side stories that seemed like they were left on the editing floor from that same novel. The balance of the book is traditional Zelazny, always leaves you wanting more....alas, I imagine this is truly the last from him. RIP RZ
great book.......2006-02-25
I was impressed with Zelazny's ability to make short stories great stories. I knew from reading the Great Book of Amber that he could write a spot-on novel; Manna From Heaven confirms his ability to turn one page into a whole universe...
Only for the devoted Zelazny fan.......2005-09-14
While this book contains a few short (some very VERY short) stories I had not read before, most have already appeared in other volumes of stories (such as the Kalifriki of the Thread stories and the title story). This volume has some significance in that it was edited and put together posthumously. I was someone disappointed in the quality of editing in this book, noting numerous typographical and spelling errors.

Manna from Heaven.......2001-04-29
What a genious idea Debbie Busenkell had when she wrote this wonderful cookbook filled with such inspirational Bible stories. I've enjoyed preparing the tasty low-fat recipes as well as reading the verses that go along with the recipe. I was so very delighted with her book, that I purchased 5 more copies for Family and Friends for gifts. They too were extremely delighted with Debbie Busenkell's wonderful idea for an inspirational cookbook. I certainly hope she does another book along the same lines, she is truly gifted.

Book Description
The inspiration for the content of the book came to mind over a period of three months starting last June. The connection took place after a particular difficult challenge concerning my husband's well-being and I started writing down on paper daily happenings. After a complete healing for my husband, by the grace of God, my habit of daily writing just continued as I would awake in the early mornings and write down what ever was coming into my thought processes. I realized something extraordinary was taking place and I literally had to stop the flow of beautiful writings and type them up for publication in a book to leave them to the world for the betterment of mankind. For the three months following, I have been typing and editing for spelling so as to prepare and place into a cohesive manuscript. This manuscript is just one of four of approximate length, all typed, all finished, all on the same wavelength.

Holt on there!.......2006-11-01
It's Tom Holt at the top of his form: funny, literate, and equally at home in any of five or six recent centuries. That's a good thing, since that's what it takes to trace Cornelius Vandervecker from the fifteen-hundreds on, sailing forever across the loneliest wastes of the seven seas. Yes, Cornelius is the Flying Dutchman. No, he's no myth. And no, he's not exactly cursed - well, not as such. It's more of a blessing, really, if you allow blessings of the mixed sort.
There was an incident involving an alchemist, a hasty retreat from a suddenly-unfriendly shore, and an untested elixir of eternal life. And alcohol, lots of alochol. (Well, everything around Vandervecker seems to involve alcohol.) That elixir just happened to work, but has a teeny little side effect - a personal pong that would knock a buzzard off a dungwagon. On the whole, it's a good idea to put a few thousand miles between the crew and anyone with a normal sense of smell. There's that alchemist, though, who's still trying to fix that little problem. There's also Danny Bennett, an enthusiastic journalist with a nose for news, and whatever else it is that surrounds the Flying Dutchman. And there's also this little matter of Vandervecker's long-term investments - I mean, very long term.
Flying Dutch is a good bit of amusement, filled with characters from the nearly inert to the flamboyant, from the witless crew to the scheming Montalban. The story keeps its pace right to the end. If you've never read Holt before, this is a great place to start. If you're tired of waiting for Pratchett's next, it's a great place to stop. If you've read Holt before, it's a great way to carry on. Go ahead, be part of the goings-on, they're huge fun.

Astounding........2000-05-02
I loved this book. Tom Holt is a wordsmith, a genuine magician. This is British humor at it's best. It's odd that British television and movie comedy is mind-numbingly stupid (excepting Fawlty Towers and some of Monty Python of course), but that the very best humorous writing comes from the U.K.
Tom Holt tackles the 'Flying Dutchman' myth, that an old Dutch seaman is cursed to sail the seas forever. Holt tells us how Wagner got it a tad wrong. In actuality the seaman drank an immortality elixir. Hilarious stuff. I love reading about Sebastian, the seaman who keeps jumping from the crow's nest to kill himself.
This ranks among the best books I've ever read, up there with Douglas Adams, Stephen Donaldson, & Tolkien. I recommend this for everyone.
Good..........1999-01-22
I found this to be one of Holt's better novels. He doesn't give in to the temptation to be totally flippant, as he sometimes does in his later novels; out of the three published in the U.S., I think this is definitely the best. You still might want to look into importing some of his other books (he's really quite prolific).
Republish! So I don't have to steal it from the library!.......1997-06-20
Although I subsequently read and was a bit disappointed by Tom Holt's other books, Flying Dutch was one of the best books I have ever read. "Hitchhiker" fans will find the same absurdities, wild use of language, cynicism, and underlying frustration with the universe that Adams conveys. I have been looking for it for awhile & am sorry to find it's not readily available
Fun and interesting story. Sarcastic view of the world.......1996-07-21
The book was a good read and fun. Author made great characters and some great situations and commentary on society. Sometimes it lagged though in moving the story along. Overall I liked reading it but would not call it a must rea

Nuggets from the golden age of Holt.......2006-11-01
I'm glad to see thse two books back in print, even if they're now printed in one book. (UK readers may see the same two books collected as "Dead Funny," with a different cover but the same ISBN.) They're two of Holt's best, dating back to the early 1990s.
In the first half, "Flying Dutch," Holt traces Cornelius Vandervecker from the fifteen-hundreds on, sailing forever across the loneliest wastes of the seven seas.
And there's also this little matter of Vandervecker's long-term investments - I mean, very long term, with compound interest.
The second half reprints "Faust Among Equals." In it, the Devil's lien against Faust's soul resulted in repossession long since. But the Devil has moved on, and a new consortium is handling the business. They're the modern devils - they're demonic management consultants, bean-counters who've mastered accursed accounting, and lawyers. No, no special kind of lawyer, just the usual. During the management reorg, Faust escapes. He and Helen of Troy have settled down to shear-it-yourself sheep farm in Australia, with only occasional disruptions of the world's technological infrastrucutre. This one blemish on their otherwise spotless record isn't good for hell'snew corporate image, so they take on a bounty hunter ("acquisition consultant") to wipe out that blemish. Or to wipe out Faust, they don't much care. He does, though, and the chase is on.
Both of these are Holt at his best, with chases across continents, across centuries, and sometimes across planes of being. His characters are caricatures, living exaggerations of painfully familiar people. They're great good fun.

Book Description
First edition. With Edward L. Rosenberry. This work is a well-illustrated history of the Pennsylvania German printing traditions as represented by over 130 of their broadsides and fraktur specimens. Printing in both German fraktur (black letter) and English, these intrepid early printers produced thousands of flyers, posters, and instructional pieces in varieties so extensive as to defy categorization. Their legal documents, such as marriage, baptism, and birth certificates, with their colorfully primitive motifs and borders, are highly collected today. However their other works are also explored and explained in this ground-breaking work. More than 130 color and black & white works are illustrated in detail with dates, printers and purpose.

Book Description
Gerald Stapleton was born in Durban, South Africa in 1920. In January 1939 he took up a short service commission in the RAF and eventually joined 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron in December 1939, prior to becoming one of the outstanding fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain, accounting for nearly twenty enemy aircraft destroyed, probably destroyed or damaged. Indeed all his scores were achieved on Spitfires during this Battle and he was revered as one of Richard Hillary's contemporaries in whose book The Last Enemy, he features.
Nicknamed 'Stapme' after a phrase used in his favourite cartoon 'Just Jake', in February 1942 he became flight commander of 257 Squadron, then joined 2 ADF at Colerne the following year before becoming a gunnery instructor at RAF Kenley and Central Gunnery School, Catfoss. He returned to ops in August 1944 to command 247 Squadron on Typhoons. He received the Dutch Flying Cross for his part in the Arnhem operations. Forced to land inside German lines in December 1944, he spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft I on the Baltic coast. Postwar he joined BOAC, then returned to South Africa but has now retired to England where he is a very popular figure at numerous air shows during the year.
Without doubt he was one of the real 'characters' to survive the war and to many the quintessential image of a Battle of Britain fighter pilot. Stapme tells his full story, warts and all, to historian David Ross, whose first book Richard Hillary received acclaim. The book is further augmented by hitherto unpublished photographs, from both the author's and Stapme's collection and a jacket painting by Nicolas Trudgian.

The Immortal Image Of The Battle Of Britain Fighter Pilot.......2005-04-03
This book is the life story of Squadron Leader Basil Gerald Stapleton or 'Stapme' as better known by his peers. Stapme fits the typical 'Boys Own' image of the RAF fighter pilot ie with handle bar moustache, courage and determination. (although Stapme would be the first to admitt he was only doing his duty.
The first part of the book covers Stapmes experiences early in the war and during the Battle of Britain with Spitfire 603 squadron. In fact the book reads like the war diary of 603 squadron, showing the pace and ferocity at which the battle was fought. Strangely, Stapme does not appear to be affected by the fear and exhaustion as experienced by many of the other pilots. It was during the Battle of Britain that Stapme shot down Franz von Werra (the one German pilot who escaped captivity to return to Germany).
After the Battle of Britain Stapme volunteered for Merchant Ship Fighter Unit protecting convoys but saw little or no action. In 1942 he was posted to 257 Squadron undergoing flying training exercises to increase pilots skills and included air tests of aircraft and systems, night flying, camera gun practice and dogfighting.
1944 saw Stapme flying Typhoons for 247 Squadron as their commanding officer. Once again the book reads like the war diary of 247 squadron, showing the dangers yet important role played by the ground attack aircraft and pilots. The book shows there was good communication and cooperation between the ground forces and ground attack Tactical Airforce, that was instrumental in the ulimate defeat of Germany. It was in one of these nerve-racking ground attacks that Stapme's Typhoon received damage from his own exploding ordnance and was forced to land and was taken prisoner. The book also briefly covers his time in captivity and his post war careers with BOAC, Dunlop, and tour guide in Botswana.
All in all this book is a good read, showing the type and character of man that fought throughout World War II with the RAF. Stapme is one of those men who has become the immortal image of the Battle of Britain fighter pilot.

Fitness motivator Jake Steinfeld, the man behind Body by Jake, wants to pump you up. In his superpositive guide, Jake supplies readers with the tools for success in life, asking them to provide the effort and the commitment. Before he even describes the first physical exercise, this relentlessly upbeat trainer urges his new trainees to do some serious mental workouts. Readers are asked to stand in front of a mirror and evaluate how they see themselves, physically and mentally. Throughout, Jake includes dozens of stories of guys--including himself--who sat around on their "buttisimos" until they started setting goals for themselves. Don't worry, it's not all "rapadoo" (motivational speak). The center chapter describes in detail the Get Strong Workout, complete with warmup stretches; power, stamina, and strength training; and daily exercises for abs, shoulders, triceps, back, etc.
For guys who can't abide the gentler Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul approach to self-help, Body by Jake provides a tough (but caring), masculine (dare we say macho?) alternative. There's good information about diet, steroid use, leadership, and mental health, in addition to the strength- and confidence-building rapadoo. (Ages 13 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Very good teenage workout.......2007-04-05
This book is exactly what I was looking for-- a workout routine designed for young athletes. I had always been involved in weight training, but routines adults used would not work for me, even if I modified them. This book was perfect in that it gave a workout that hit power and endurance. If you want a routine that will work and hit all necessary points, this is your book.
P.S. If they had a four and a half star rating, I would have chosen that because more attention could have been paid to nutrition.
Amazing.......2003-02-22
This book is great. I read it and I did all of the extersizes in it. The book is wonderful. Its the only book that I read that looked back into it (only for the extersizes inside it). I would recoment it to every teen.
Great Book!!!.......2002-08-21
This is the best book about fitness for teenage boys out on the market. I have experienced great results through it. It is an excellent book for building physically and mentally fit bodies. I recommend it to anyone who would like to take full advantage of life.
Very cool book!.......2002-02-13
Last week I saw Jake at Barnes and Noble. He was standing in front of a crowd talking about this book. I wasnýt very interested, him and I have nothing in common. I like hanging with my friends and playing with my Play Station II, he talks about exercise ý something I definitely didnýt care about. I could hear him in the next aisle, and the more I heard, the more I listened. This time he was talking about something I could relate to, being a fat kid, not being popular, being invisible. I slowly started to walk over. He was talking about Get Strong. Finally it clicked. My brother has been an athlete all his life ý the exact opposite of me. I always wondered why he got the good grades, the girls and had tons of friends. Jake said that all guys needed was a little physical fitness to get confident. I thought about it all the way home and asked my mom to get the book. I expected my brother to give me a hard time about it, but he thought it was cool. I have read the whole book twice and have begun exercising. My brother is a terrific coach and my family is really proud of me. Iýve only had the book a little over a week and it has changed my life. For one thing, I didnýt know that I was so strong. I plan on following this program until I am where I want to be ý and Ashley Martin starts to notice me. I will keep you posted.
Taking control of your life.......2002-01-04
Here's the deal: you can let life be something that happens to you, or you can take control of your own destiny, starting with your head and moving onto your body. Nobody has a better plan for that than Jake Steinfeld. The guy is a phenomenon, and in this book, you learn that he started out as a pudgy guy who had trouble speaking and had the self-confidence of a beaten puppy. I've got 3 sons who think Jake is tops -- not just because he's a monster physically, but because he's created a great life for himself and his family, pretty much from scratch. It all started for him as a teenager, and this book is more than his life story: it's a step-by-step way of thinking about what you want, and then methodically making it happen. It's got great ways to make muscles and gain the flexibility to use them, but it's a whole lot more. And it's a book that's clearly written from Jake's heart, and in his own unique style - straight to the point, as clear as can be, and often funny as all get out. My kids love this book, and you will too! A book that proves that now's the time to "Get Strong".
