Great Support for Older Students!.......2001-06-12
I found that this book can provide a great writing scaffold for older students who are struggling writers. Often, students in 3rd grade and above who are emergent writers are embarassed to write, as their writing looks 'babyish' compared to their peers. Here's an idea I've used, with Making Big Books as a resource: Have your students create simple story lines that are used with patterned books for preschoolers, kindergartners, or primary special ed students. This has the benefits of: giving a sense of purpose to the activity; engaging students in a modification of "language experience" in which students write down their thoughts, then use those for reading. Remember the strong reading/writiing connection (Adams, 1990). Pattern books such as Making Big Books can help jump-start your students!

Book Description
My Pony Written and illustrated by Susan Jeffers I want a pony. I want a pony more than anything in the world. At the heart of Susan Jeffers's exquisite picture book lies the idea that in her imagination, a child can journey anywhere and do anything-even fly through the stars on her very own pony. Susan Jeffers, an avid equestrian and horse owner, effortlessly captures the grace and magic of horses in this luminous children's picture book. My Pony is a landmark book in Ms. Jeffers's career, for not only is it the first book she's both written and illustrated, but it is also inspired by her own experiences as a young girl who wished for a pony and channeled that desire onto paper. Ms.Jeffers is a New York Times best-selling artist. She was a Caldecott Honor recipient for Three Jovial Huntsmen, she illustrated Love Songs of the Little Bear by Margaret Wise Brown, and continues to illustrate the best-selling McDuff series by Rosemary Wells

Cute pony book.......2007-01-12
My girls LOVE horses. This is a really cute book, with great pictures about a little girl and how she loves ponies. It's totally worth it!
My Pony.......2006-03-25
This is a wonderful story perfect for your imaginative little ones. It took me back to my childhood and all the imagining and pretending I did as a little girl. My children were enraptured. I did not give it a five b/c they have not asked me to read it over and over. I think you have to be in a special mood for this story. Great at bedtime! Great for the little girl or boy who dreams of horses or loves animals.
For every girl who has asked for a horse..........2006-02-08
The is a wonderful book for children who want their own horse and must live with the realization that they can't have one... but it is always nice to dream.
All Time Favorite.......2005-11-11
This has become a book for our special collection-my daughter received it for Christmas at age 4 & still loves it a year later. The illustrations are truly beautiful (as are all of Susan Jeffers illustrated books), and the story is sweet & appropriate for young kids (I'd say 10 and under). It's a story about a young girl who wants a pony, and draws & dreams up her own.
What child doesn't love ponies?.......2005-08-02
A beautifully illustrated book and heart-warming story any child would love. A "keeper".

Customer Reviews:
Not that great... :-(.......2005-06-05
This tells you almost nothing about drawing horses!!!!!!!
The body structure in this book is wrong, they create colours that have never been horse colours, and make the horse look all bendy with no proper joints!
This should be given a 2 star, and if you really want something to teach you, get either The Usborne Compeate Book Of Drawing or Draw Horses, or maybe even Draw 50 horses
Fantastic Job!.......2004-12-12
If you love horses and have always wanted to learn to draw them, now is your chance! Levin takes you step-by-step through developing an image, a character if you will, that is not only recognizable, but something to be proud of.

A precious gift for any horse lover.......1999-03-27
I have bought five copies of this lovely art book. Each one I have ended up giving as a special gift to a horse lover. I am ordering one as a wedding gift now...that will make six purchases. Someday, I'll have supplied all those lucky people with one and keep one for myself.
This book is for those who love and understand horses........1998-11-07
Experience this book through your imagination. The illustrations tell more of the story than the written words. This book was given to me by my horse's first veterinarian who knows, that from time to time I need a 'horse fix'. I lost my best friend in '97. This book brings back memories of him. If you show a horse a kind hand, you will have a friend for life and this book proves it.
A horse lover's dream come true!.......1997-07-15
This amazing book arrived today, and I sat down and read it from cover to cover completely, happily transfixed. If you know horses and love them or know a friend who does, give this book to yourself or your friend. The illustrations are simply breathtaking and the text filled with humor, wonder and love

Customer Reviews:
Well............2006-06-17
This book is good,it teaches you how to draw a horse head, but not a horse.....It teaches you to draw lots of diffrent heads and expressions. When she is done she shades it .But does not teach you how, well she does but it is not step by step.It is like a huge step.
[...]
Not ANYONE can do it.Then she says to do SCRIBLES to draw a horse body, huh???A very deteiled head with a ¨Scribled Body¨that is not good! I like most of the book ,just that sometimes she jumps big steps, well too big for us!
Well go ahead and buy it it is not bad, teachs you lots of things, but a body....
What a GREAT start for the budding artist!.......2006-03-13
As the mother of an art student, this book totally broke through the obstacles my daughter was having with her beloved horse hobby. They say artist have the most trouble drawing the things they love the most, but the step-by-step instructions assisted my daughter to break out of her barrier. She uses the basic techniques to help her with her 3D work as well! Thank you!
Practice makes perfect!.......2005-09-30
This book is really good to learn from! I traced a few horse heads, then practiced free hand, and it came out really good! WHen I went onto a body, she drew a bunch of circles, and I was surprised, but I tried it-- it came out so good!! Ofcourse it took practice, but once you clean up the picture, shade it and add a saddle, you'd think this was a real peice of art in a gallery!! I really recomend this book!
Deserves Just That........2005-01-10
I will admit. This is good for teaching you how to draw horse heads. At least the first set of instructions is. I was exicited and thought this would be a great book when I went and drew an excellent, realistic picture of a horse head. I was aiming for arabian but got quarter horse, but I didnt care. It looked great. So I wanted to go on to bodies. And guess what I found Scribbles. Yes, scribbles. She just drew a bunch of circles, saying to go with the energy that you feel. I ddin't bother, and went on to draw another horse head using a different set of instructions I was so disapointed when I was done. The horse looked like something a 9 year old would draw if they grabbed the book. I looked back to the other picture. The other one was in a ocmpleately different class. After this, I tried to draw asaddles and bridles. But they didn't tell you how to draw them. They shpwed pictures of say, a racing saddle, and said trace this onto a horse you previously drew. I wouldn't request buying this book.

Fantastic Inspirational Great Horse drawing book!!!!.......2007-09-03
The drawings and watercolors in this book are utterly beautiful. A beginner might want a second book but this should be in everyone's library. It shows how to create beginning drawings to mature accomplished drawings and they all capture the magic and mystery of the horse. Its my favorite horse drawing book!!!!
Not for Painters.......2007-06-12
I was dissipointed in the fact that it was mostly drawing and NOT painting. The price is too high for such a small amount of pages.
The drawings are well done , but for beginngers. Anyone who loves horses will love it anyway.

Book Description
Penned by Whedon and Brett Matthews, who wrote several episodes of Firefly as well as Dark Horse's final Angel comics series and the animated Chronicles of Riddick feature "Dark Fury," Serenity follows a ship full of mercenaries, fugitives and one law-abiding prostitute in their pursuit for fast cash and a little peace along the fringes of space. The ragtag crew of Serenity take on a scavanger mission with the hopes of earning enough dough to disappear for a while. Only too late do they realize the whole gig is orchestrated by an old enemy eager remake their aquanitance with the help of some covert-operatives known only as the Blue Gloves. Artist Will Conrad (Marvel's Elektra and Witches) and colorist Laura Martin (Astonishing X-Men and The Ultimates) paint a rough and wild world of adventure across a strange and dangerous universe, in this not-to-be-missed tale straight from the brain of pop-culture mastermind Joss Whedon!
Customer Reviews:
Can't Believe It Got Cancelled........2007-10-03
If you liked the show you will like this book. If you didn't like the show..........what is wrong with you?
Important bridge between the tv show and movie........2007-10-02
This trade is an important bridge between the show and the movie. The story is well told and vintage Joss. The only issue is that the artwork is less than spectacular.
Good but short.......2007-09-09
This explains lots between the early demise of the TV show Firefly and the major motion picture Serenity. The biggest flaw is how short the book is. While it seems to thicker than a regular comic (it is, because its four issues combined), most of that action and plot could have been summed up in two issues leaving room for more action.
Overall, this is a MUST HAVE for any Firefly, Serenity, or Whedon fan.
Filling the gaps in space.......2007-09-03
Call it Serenity or Firefly, either way this is THE finest series on the big or little screen. 'Nuff said there. The comic is intended as a (shaky) bridge between the TV series ending and the movie beginning. Nicely done, excellent artwork, able to capture the look of the series without obsessing on matching them (ever see the Batman movie adaptations? they try so hard to match the movie they miss the opportunity to tell the story in a fresh way). With such a short life-span, Firefly didn't have time to create a market for browncoats with cash burning a hole in their pocket, so the few items like this are great comfort on those cold nights when you look up at the stars and realize Firefly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But we were there.
Filled in the gaps.......2007-08-27
I love Firefly. Now, that's not to say I've always loved it. When the show first premiered on Fox, I thought it was silly. Then again, I only saw one episode and left it at that. Well, Joss Whedon's universe finally dragged me in kicking and screaming, and I've been a devoted fan ever since. This graphic novel (or comic book to those of you who don't like fancy words for simple things :D ), fills in the gaps between the Firefly series and the Serenity movie, and it does so quite well. I felt like I was truly watching a lost episode of Firefly, and it nice and neatly wraps up a few loose ends that seque right into Serenity. I highly recommend this graphic novel. It's a must for anyone who truly loves Joss Whedon's "Firefly".

Customer Reviews:
Amusing and Fun.......2007-08-11
I am currently a Latin student, and will be using this book to amuse and annoy my teacher.
Latin is one of my favorite subjects, and this is certainly a great addition to your textbooks.
Vale, lacerte!
WEll for the right person, maybe.......2007-01-20
Unless you are a Latin scholar or a linquist, this is not the book for you, don't waste your time or money. I got a copy from the library and did not buy it.
Latin for All Occasions.......2006-07-12
This book is informative, and fun. I enjoyed reading the translations. It is fun to share with friends. I like to end letters with some of the phrases, just to tease my non-Latin speaking friends.
A fun book..........2004-12-09
This book is a fun book to keep on hand.
Most of the phrases are bizarre...like Sometimes I get this urge to conquer large parts of europe (interdum feror cupidine partium magnarum Europae vincendarum)but it is still a fun book.
I especially enjoy throwing in some latin phrases in email correspondence with friends to keep them guessing.
Great Gift for Those Off to Higher Learning.......2004-12-08
This is a fun little book without any hint of actual usefulness, but it's great! Yup, it's geeky, but didn't you always want a Latin-speaking parrot?
Pulle! Visne frustum?
- Polly want a cracker?
Latin's great for being subtle too...
Braccae tuae aperiuntur.
- Your fly is open.
You get the idea, and the caption on the cover says it all... "From cocktail party chitchat to bumper stickers to personal ads - everything you'll ever need to say in perfect Latin!" It's a great novelty book!
Book Description
Tired of feeling like "The Ugly American" every time you visit the Vatican? Fed up with having to consult a dictionary when all you want to say is, "I've just been run over by a chariot!"? Well, now you can prepare yourself for almost every papal problem and haphazard happenstance with Which Way to the Vomitorium?: Vernacular Latin for All Occasions.
Enhance your small talk at dinner parties with such gems as "Esne ebrius iterum?" (Are you drunk again?) and "Suntne illi glires novi?" (Are these dormice fresh?). Relive the tedium of traveling by introducing your children to Latin with "Paene adventimus?" (Are we nearly there yet?).
With over 450 phrases and a recipe for "liquamen," Which Way to the Vomitorium? will have you leading that ancient Roman lifestyle in no time, teaching you everything you need to know if you want to properly pontificate with the Pontiff or survive in the Old World neighborhoods of Pompeii.
Customer Reviews:
Ckock full of good fun!.......2001-07-18
This book pokes delightfull fun at phrasebooks, latin, and Roman history and culture. It is chock full of in jokes and is one of the few written texts that has me laughing aloud in the middle of the cafeteria.
A Paucity of Information.......2000-10-14
I would not recommend "Which Way to the Vomitorium?" to anyone who is even remotely serious about the study of Latin. It contains too few phrases, and all of them are built with words found in any decent Latin dictionary. Do not be fooled by the subtitle "Vernacular Latin for any Occasion" into thinking that this book will give you any insight into what was common, spoken latin. If you are a teacher, you probably know just as many, if not more, off color sayings to interest your students than are in this book. And if you are a student, trust me, not one phrase in this book contains any word your Latin teacher would refuse to teach you!
A Good Buy for the Latin Teacher.......2000-05-20
This is a great compilation of Latin adages, some authentic, some invented. Although its practical value is questionable, it is worth its weight in gold to the high school Latin teacher. It lends itself to providing comic, tragic, dirty, and sometimes down-right rotten humor.

Bene bene..........2005-11-17
This is an audio-tape compilation of two of Henry Beard's books, 'Latin for All Occasions' and 'Latin for Even More Occasions'.
These wonderful little books were presented to me many years ago after I had completed a Latin seminar. It was a wonderful gift, and I have found much use for the various phrases, and an extraordinary amount of humour that can be derived from the blandest of statements when translated into Latin. For example, the innocuous phrase 'Darn! There goes my beeper!' becomes quite funny in Latin:
Heu! Tintinnuntius meus sonat!
One has visions of Caesar fumbling through his tunic for some beeping object.
So, if you need a little Latin on the golf course (Alterum ictum faciam); on the tennis court (minime latum!), at the beach when spotting a shark (Pistrix! Pistrix!), or you just need to say Illud Latine dici non potest (you can't say that in Latin), you'll be prepared with this volume.
It even comes with a section on what to say when at the Vatican (where it might truly come in handy). For instance you might need to say 'Ubi possum potiri petasi similis isti?' when passing a cardinal or nun (translation: Where can I get a hat like that?).
After Beard's first book, 'Latin for All Occasions', one might say his second book was a case of deja vu, or prius visum, as the Latin would have it.
Who said Latin wasn't useful? Henry Beard, in this volume and its predecessor, demonstrates that it is very useful, and not just for identifying a dish on a menu in Rome that looks suspiciously like the Latin word for 'eel'.
Beard notes that even French sounds even better in Latin:
Savoir faire = Scire facere
Nouveau riche = Novissime locupletatus
Merde! = Merda!
From there we proceed to philosophy:
Cogito, ergo sum
Sum, ergo edo.
Cogito sumere potum alterum.
(I think, therefore I am. I am, therefore I eat. I think I'll have another drink.)
And lest we forget, the memorable Latin phrase for use at a toga party:
Toga! Toga! Toga!
(memorise this, for it will be on the test)
There are things here for sports fans, pop culture fans, those about to celebrate and those who want to be casual. If you want to sound intelligent while saying you think you've just spotted Elvis in the crowd, this book can tell you how to bring up the subject intelligently.
If Caesar had had this book, he might have rephrased his famous utterance as
Veni, vidi, nates calce concidi! (I came, I saw, I kicked butt!).
Divinissimum est!
Proving once again, some people have far too much time on their hands. And we are more fortunate for that!
So, don't waste your time on watching reruns of Insula Gilliganis or game shows such as Periculum and Rota Fortunae -- pick up this book today, and merge the worlds past and present.
Die dulci fruere. (Have a nice day.)
