Super Reader.......2007-09-01
A doctor is very disturbed when her father passes away, and she has to deal with his estate, including real estate. She wants nothing to do with, and gets rid of it. She has a key, but to what? Things seem to be getting weird and supernatural.
She ends up turning for help to a brusque Repairman Jack who gives her no promises, and they delve deeper into something odd, and sinister.
Jack Rocks!.......2007-02-08
I honestly think Repairman Jack is the most clever and unique recurring character I have ever come across. I've only just finished "Legacies" the 2nd in the series and I feel I "know" Jack. The Repairman Jack novels are fast paced, never boring, characters very well developed. I never want to put these books down! This one didn't have a supernatural storyline as did "The Tomb" but it was every bit as good. I can't wait to get to the next one!
A Legacy of Great Storytelling.......2007-02-02
My wife and I just finished F. Paul Wilson's 2nd Repairman Jack novel - Legacies - and were stunned and amazed!
Why you ask?
Because unlike the 1st novel - The Tomb - we were expecting another monster or supernatural type of storyline. But even without those fantastical elements, Legacies managed to still be a fantastic story in many ways.
It was so good in fact, (like the Tomb was), that my wife and I have already purchased the next 6 novels of the Repairman Jack series. And we already have good trust and faith in this awesome author in delivering a rousing yarn - each and every time.
[...]we have no doubt about exploring what new adventures and character growth spurts Jack and Gia will have in future volumes. We can't tell you how well written and fun these first two novels were to read. Whether you are a male or female, young or old, reading these novels is definately for everyone.
Hollywood take heed!
We loved how Legacies built tension with each and every chapter. We loved reading how all the main characters - new and old - grow as the novel goes along. Mixed with tons of action and adventure, love interests and mystery, Legacies is sure to please the mainstream readers.
Heck, it already has...
LEGACIES is another great Repairman Jack book.......2007-01-09
Do not miss any of the Repairman Jack books - every book will keep you turning the page to see how Repairman Jack wins each mission he take on. If you like Jack Bower in "24" you will love Repairman Jack.
Jack and the Mystery House.......2006-09-17
The first Repairman Jack novel by F. Paul Wilson was written in 1984; the character would lie fallow for quite a while till the late 1990s, when Wilson started producing the Repairman Jack books on a more regular basis. That first book was called The Tomb, and while a good book, actually had nothing at all to do with a tomb. In contrast, the second book in the series, Legacies, has a lot to do with legacies.
In particular, the legacy in this story is a house belonging to the late Ronald Clayton - a brilliant scientist but generally unpleasant guy - and has been willed to his daughter Alicia. Alicia, a doctor at a children's AIDS clinic, despised her father and would normally want nothing to do with the house. When her brother Thomas, a loser who can hardly earn a living (and was cut out of the will), offers her a huge sum for the house, she resists, sensing something fishy. Her brother then contests the will, and the people she turns to for help wind up dead.
After Jack does her a favor by retrieving some toys stolen from the clinic, Alicia tries to get his assistance. Initially reluctant, he eventually decides to help. It is apparent that there is something in the house that someone wants, and Jack wants to find it first. He also needs to know who is backing Thomas with a lot of funds.
Unlike many other Wilson books, this is a nonsupernatural story, but there is still some out-of-the-ordinary stuff going on. In addition, we get a good amount of the suspense and action that Wilson does well. On the other hand, there are times in the book that rescues come from out of nowhere which cheapens some of the story. Generally, Wilson is a dependable writer of four star books, and I'll give this one such a rating, but it is a little weaker than his other works.

Not His Best.......2006-06-25
I am a fan of Pelecanos' novels. He is one of the best mystery writers around. His stories are character driven, well written, and full of atmosphere. So what's wrong with Nick's Trip? There's too much trip. We spend too much time driving around and drinking and slumming in sleazy bars. Now in real life that's fun, but in the novel it eventually gets boring. One scene reminds us of another, one bar smells like another, one morning-after feels like another, and eventually we beg Pelecanos to stop the car and let us out. Nick's Trip is a good novel, better than a lot of other mystery novels out there, but it's not Pelecanos' best.
Might Be The Best Book By Pelecanos.......2004-06-27
This was the first Pelecanos book I ever read, and it had me snared from the very beginning. This guy is so talented, so funny, and so adept at capturing the raw feel of average daily life for a simple bartender who occasionally plays private detective. I found myself in awe of the writing in this book; so original, so humorous...with characters so real that you can't help rooting for them. Pelecanos has now gone on to write books which are far more serious and not nearly as good, in my opinion. His first three books, featuring PI Nick Stefanos, are really fantastic and to me, this is the best of the three. A far cry from the usual tale of the down-and-out PI who drinks too much and cries in his beer all day. This book is truly original, a real gem, and fans of PI fiction (and blue-collar literature) will love it.
drugs, music, crime .. and reflections of wasted youth.......2003-09-22
George Pelecanos is certainly a writer worthy of better notice. He writes in a very literate yet street-wise manner. His reflections of youth (in his home town of Washington) are poignant, and he throws in a fine crime story for good measure. "Nick's Trip" is no exception. Not classic Pelecanos but certainly a fun ride.
"Nick's Trip" is not a "road book". I think the title is somewhat metaphorical, describing the journey in life by a young private detective named Nick Stephanos. He reflects on past friendships, boozing and life when he bumps into an old friend with a problem (missing wife, big money involved, etc). He becomes more reflective when he calls for the aid from an old family acquaintance, someone well connected into local organized crime. Then the adventure takes off. A fast read, great characterizations. And a real treat for 1970s music buffs.
Bottom line: one of several jewels by Pelecanos. Recommended.
A good place to jump on the Pelecanos bandwagon with me.......2002-07-31
Another fine effort by Pelecanos. I had run across Nick in some of the author's other work, but I didn't really appreciate him until I read Nick's Trip. Nick Stefanos is a strong character in his own right - witty, versatile and resourceful. He handles a pretty tough situation in this well crafted story.
Better than any other crime mystery writer I'm familiar with, Pelecanos knows how to develop characters, paint interesting word pictures of what's going on and produce a fine story. If he writes it, I'm reading it and I'd recommend you check him out. This book is as good a place as any to start.
Not Your Average P.I........2001-06-15
Nick Stefanos is a private eye who helps make ends meet by working behind the bar at a place called the Spot. An old buddy from school tracks him down and asks him to find his wife. While working the case we are continually taken back to Nick's youth as he remembers old friends and family. The storyline lurches from chapter to chapter. One minute he's working on the case in search of a missing woman, the next he's running down leads about a murdered friend leaving us to make the necessary mental adjustments.
Nick's a hard-drinking, hard-smoking bloke who's marching to the beat of his own drummer. This is not a light hearted romp, rather, we trudge through the seedier parts of town with a character who tends to fit right in. The method of chasing up leads seems to be an endless series of visits to bars throughout the D.C. area with a necessary shot and a beer at each. You've got to be prepared to accept that Nick Stefanos has many faults and weaknesses and is not your average private investigator. Oh, by the way, even with all his faults, I still found the story quite enjoyable.

Great adventures...fun reading!.......2007-07-05
MTV Road Trips appears almost daunting in size, but it is well written and fun to read, particulalry the chapter by Dara Bramson.
Great insights and hints, and the book is fast reading...never a dull moment.
I highly recommend.
American Highways section.......2007-06-26
I bought the book with one trip in mind and ended up being more interested in the American Highways section. There is so much info in this part of the book and it was easy to read. Except for New Mexico I had never considered a visit to any of these places. I didn't know that Nashville had a Parthenon, or how Branson got started. I like the way everything is organized, loved the suggestions for music, loved the humor, too. All in all a good read with or without the trip.MTV Road Trips U.S.A. (MTV Guides)
The "Retro Roadtrip" was amazing, and so is this guide!.......2007-06-15
My friends and I just got back from Valerie Willis's "Retro Roadtrip" and it was a blast! The guide was easy and fun to read, and very comprehensive. It's a perfect travel guide for bored college students with nothing to do this summer. We can't wait to go on another one of these roadtrips and hopefully they are all as incredible as the "Retro Roadtrip". I'm really glad my friend purchased this book!

Book Description
A Triskaidecollection of Queer and Weird Stories is a new collection of dark fantasy fiction with gay characters. Talented newcomer Steve Berman has assembled thirteen of his most evocative stories, all of which revolve around the central theme of the 'tryst.' But these passionate hookups and romantic encounters range from the eerie to the horrifying to the wondrous. TRYSTS offers readers dark and quirky tales from a distinctive new voice in gay fiction.
Customer Reviews:
Mixed Bag.......2007-09-11
This collection of short stories is, as the headline indicates, a mixed bag. Several of the offerings are cleverly written and erotically charged. Unfortunately, the author decided to take a turn into arena of "Weird Stories" (as indicated in the title). The turn, for this reader did not work well. Despite this fact, Mr. Berman is a talented writer, and you, the reader, should read his other works as well.
Trysts is creepy, fun and queerly strange stuff,a great book.......2004-10-10
Well, it's been a little bit since I've read any gay books, so I thought it was time. I had Trysts on the shelf for several months and pulled it down for a closer look. Once I started this book of short stories, I pretty much read them all thru. I like to read short stories and interject them into my novel and non-fiction reading, but these were too interesting, odd and funly strange. I especially liked the last set of stories that are all tied together and take place in small altered pockets of America. A strange event has caused certain areas to Fall, making them into twisted realms filled with magic, monsters and rag tag groups of people looking for something, be it love, drugs, sex, acceptance.
My favorite story in the bunch was Finn's Night, which really didn't have any fantasy to it at all. It is a spin on Huck Finn and takes a gay gambler into youngins and mixes him up with Huck and a lady conartist. Very interesting, funny and romantic in an oldstyle way. Very different from anything else you'll tend to read.
Cries Beneath the Plaster was one of the creepiest. A man turns tricks into a work of art...until the art comes to life. This one was very strange and creepy, but I won't say anymore as to spoil it.
Other stories in this book of 13, take on a prostitute ring that isn't quite what it seems and the john that gets taken into a dark circle. A youth makes a perfect man out of cuttings from magazines and then runs into him...kinda... and then there is the secret desires that only a ghost can reveal thru a Ouija board.
Some I liked better than others, of course, but all had twists on life, love and loneliness; drugs and sex; youth and desires. All had a queer tone or directly queer character and then put them in odd and bizarre situations. I recommend this as good queer reading. Girls, you should like it too as a few stories have lesbian characters as well.
So find Trysts by Steve Berman...and have a freaky night.
Found it, bought it, read it, liked it!.......2004-03-17
I found this book when I happened to meet Steve Berman at DragonCon back in 2002 and during a chat he skillfully talked me into buying it :)
Trysts is a cool little book. Steve has labeled it "a triskaidecollection of queer and weird stories" (yes, that's 13 stories) and I think that description fits pretty well.
Some of the stories reminded me of Twilight Zone plotlines gone horribly, horribly wrong (and that's saying something!), while others were almost traditional horror stories like I grew up reading in those big Alfred Hitchcock anthologies. Sure, they were "queer and weird" (and I don't think Twilight Zone would have gay men and lust in the middle of most stories) but Steve certainly has a handle on the basics of horror!
One of the main themes, maybe even the theme of the story collection seems to be that of a character or a group of them stepping away from normal life (either willingly or by accident) and getting sucked into situations or whole worlds which are just scary -- painful, corrupt, wrong, immoral, or just not part of the normal world, instead belonging to a dark side of life, from which the characters can't escape.
One story, "Cries Beneath the Plaster," has an artist seeing his own creations (and past misdeeds) coming after him in revenge. Several of the stories take place in a nameless city where large sections have somehow changed, so they are now "Fallen" areas where people live in madness, magic, corruption, and are just generally no longer living the safe, happy lives they were before.
My favorite story in the book is "Path of Corruption." Reminding very much of Storm Constantine's stories, "Path" tells the story of a young gay college student in New Orleans who step by step abandons his safety and propriety to join up with a male prostitute. And it's not just that he ends up basically living in a whorehouse, but that the man he's with, the men in the house, aren't just ordinary whores but more like a cult. The story ends with a shattering scene of whores carrying out a ritual half-way between an H.P. Lovecraft story and something in Storm's Grigori series!
This is a great short story collection and one I'd strongly recommend to people looking for horror and dark fantasy with some queer content and/or sex mixed in. Go out and hook up with Trysts!
dark, erotic, and sexy... I love it!!!.......2004-01-30
Don't be fooled by this books small size! Any fan of the genre will find hours of reading pleasure with this little gem. Trysts draws the reader into the dark underworld Mr. Berman creates that is as suductive as it is compelling. One story demands you read on to the next one. It was impossible to put this book down! I don't usually leave a review, but Trysts is one of these rare finds that I had to comment on. From the erotic darkness in "Path of Corruption", to the playful, whitty and fun adventure in "Finn's Night", to the magically bizarre stories that take place in The Fallen, this book has a story that is bound to please just about anyone into the genre. I was surprised that so much character depth was created for each story in such a short framework, but it works! I found myself caring, rooting, angry, and even teary-eyed at the fate befallen some of these characters. My hat's off to Mr. Berman, can't wait for the next installment!
A Tantalizing Treat.......2003-08-14
Disturbing, tantalizing, erotic, chilling. Every story in this collection has something different to offer the reader. From dark erotisism, to heartfelt (albeit bizzare) love triangles, these stories showcase the wide range of subjects the author has at his disposal. Especially good are Mr. Berman's Fallen stories. These shorts draw you in, and leave you hungry for more tales from this topsy-turvy world. This is an excellent first outing by Mr. Berman, and I eagerly await his next work.

One Radical Tip > Generic, Cheap Books.......2007-03-23
I got this book for $5 from a bookstore. This book has several core tips on training flexibility that differ greatly from mainstream flexibility training.
For instance, he notes that stretching the legs by just pure relaxation will only produce weak kicks. This surprised me since I had always thought that stretching would be to relax as much as possible to achieve the greatest range of motion.
Apparently, pure relaxation stretching does not allow the leg to develop the muscles that have this range of motion. Therefore, the leg won't be able to kick nearly as much as the stretching distance made.
There were also a few other great tips that allowed me to achieve my full side split, but I thought that contrast contraction was the most important. I would pay $40 any day just for a invigorating, radical tip that I might miss for a lifetime.
PS: This book introduced me to the "Iron Game"(a.k.a strength training). With extensive research, I then corrected my principles of training to be different than that of a modern bodybuilder's; for too long I was accustomed to a modern bodybuilder's principles that had and never will work for hard gainers - people who have trouble even gaining a pound of muscle over the course of a year while eating well structured diets.
Best stretching book.......2006-07-10
I'll automatically give this book 5 stars because I think the information contained in it is very valuable. When I first read this book a few years ago, I was 6 inches from doing a full side split and couldn't get any further. This book provides powerful contradictory methods that worked very well for me. Within 6 weeks I achieved my first side split. However, it is very tough. Getting down into the splits is inevitably painful and uncomfortable. However, this book teaches you to distinguish between the pain of progress and the pain of injuring yourself. Lots of the former will result in all the flexibility a person could possibly need. I know it sounds like a masochistic pursuit but I've tried lots of flexibilty programs and this is the only one that I would recommend for guaranteed results. He also teaches people how to be flexible all the time which is great for martial artists. Being able to do high kicks is useless unless a person can do them all the time. Real situations don't allow the luxury of a warm up.
He makes at least one stretching book or dvd every year. .......2005-04-18
Apparently Pavel wants you to believe that: 1/The technology of stretching is constantly evolving...2/ That he is the source for the latest info...,and 3/ That he will continue to make his -own- books obsolete with his future products. He's already put out at least four more items since this, the latest being the 'Loaded Stretching' DVD. Well. Pavel , there's another form of 'loaded stretching'..called -yoga-. Has it come to that after all of the expensive books and tapes you've sold?
too expensive for too little information........2005-04-16
As I stated in the headline... Pavel's books, are way too expensive... When I ordered this book I was expecting a tome of several hundred pages... color photos, well described excersises. I got none of those things. I will say that Pavel's writing is humorous and never boring... but this book is certainly not worth the money. Especially since you can find most, if not all the excersises and techniques from the book online and free.
good.......2004-03-15
Heres what Bob Anderson Author of the bestseller stretching had to say about the book.
"Are you ready for pavel? This is a tough, strenous, take no prisoners approach to flexibility and strength. He describes some pretty radical russian techniques for flexibility, strength, circilation and healthy joints. Not for wimps; expensive for a paperback."
