Why is Lady Sophia looking for a lover?
And
could she seduce the most marriageable man in London?

Lady Sophia Sydney would do anything to ensnare the unattainable Sir Ross Cannon. Her goal—to ruin his reputation and cause a scandal that would be the talk of all London. So she insinuates herself into his life by gaining his trust and living in his house.

Every morning, her lush presence tempts him beyond all reason...the way she bends over the table to serve him the meals she has prepared...the way her hands oh, so gently—yet sensuously—brush against him. Every night, she promises with her eyes—and her body— that the hours before dawn could be spent in unbridled passion instead of restless sleep—if only he'd let her share his bed.

She knows he is falling more in love with her each day. But she never counted on falling in love with him. And she never dreamed he might very respectably ask for her hand in marriage...

4 out of 5 stars Another outstanding, lush, hot romance from the diva!.......2007-08-08

Lisa makes her hero, Sir Ross Cannon, the head of the Bow Street Runners. How cool is that? A hard, relentless, untiring, unstoppable, `unfeeling' machine of a man, Ross was widowed when his wife died in agonizing childbirth. Along comes Sophia, wanting employment, when her hidden agenda is to seduce Ross and bring him to ruin. Sophia's brother was imprisoned as a youth when Ross was his magistrate, and died from cholera in one of the rotting hulks on the Thames during his incarceration. Sophia is burning for revenge. However, this gets a bit weak when Ross, long deprived of any tenderness, allows himself to succumb not only to Sophia's seduction tactics, but he also becomes the predator in their relationship. How will Ross react when he discovers Sophia's true agenda? Also, there's a very interesting story surrounding Nick Gentry, a criminal type underworld character who makes a huge difference to Sophia and Ross's relationship: excellent blackmail material!

5 out of 5 stars Great Author, Great Romance.......2007-05-08

So often vengeance themed romance can fall into formulaic plots. Not so with Lady Sophia's Lover. Sophia is determined to seek revenge on behalf of her brother. The object of her steely determination is Sir Ross Cannon, chief of the Bow Street Runners.

Sophia, an impoverished viscount's daughter, discovers that Sir Ross was the judge who condemned her brother John to an early death on a penal ship.

To carry out her plan to discredit and destroy him publicly she becomes indispensable to him as a secretary. She moves into his home and looks for possible incriminating and embarrassing evidence against him. However, she can find none as Sir Ross is as he seems, forthright, noble and honest.

Sir Ross is a widower and quite intrigued by Sophia. He is instantly attracted to her. Furthermore, he can tell she is attracted to him.

As Sophia spends more time with her employer, she releases the years of bitterness and allows herself to view Sir Ross with new eyes. What she sees is someone brave and a protector of the downtrodden.

However, she has so many secrets she does not believe that he can forgive her. Just when one secret is revealed another one takes its place.

Both these characters have great depth. Kleypas weaves their romance throughout the entire plot. The tension never waned and I was rooting for them on every page. The love Sophia has for her family and Sir Ross is fierce. Sir Ross is unapologetic about his desire for her. Sophia is no coy miss. She accepts and delights in Sir Ross's advances even when she is uncertain of her own feelings of revenge.

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Kleypas.......2007-05-07

I can't say it enough. I love this author! So glad these books are mostly connected. I like every character she brings in.

5 out of 5 stars Plot and Characters That Shine!.......2007-04-28

Lisa Kleypas is a magnificent writer with a way of making every story--both plot and characters--shine.

We immediately care for Lady Sophia as she worms her way into the notoriously upright (and celebate) Sir Ross Cannon's household. Becoming his secretary/personal assistant and household manager, her secret mission is to uncover some dirt on Ross, London's famous and powerful Chief Magistrate of Bow Street (the mid 1800's equivalent of the Police Chief), so that she can destroy him. Believing that Ross is responsible for her brother's death, Sophia is determined not only to raid his records but also to break his heart by making him fall in love with her, seducing him, and then abandoning him while publicizing their scandalous relationship.

However, Ross turns out not to be the sort of man Sophia envisioned at all. He is truly kind, just, and full of integrity--not to mention full of a great passion for her that only a will as strong as his could keep in check. As Sophia tries in vain to keep her heart safe, numerous entertaining plot twists keep the reader guessing while we watch the complex and delightful relationship between Sophia and Ross unfold.

Lady Sophia's Lover is a fun, moving, and ultimately uplifting rollercoaster ride that any fan of historical romance will tremendously enjoy.

It is 1322, and Lord Hugh de Courtenay's plan to host a tournament is a fantastic opportunity for the money-lenders of Oakhampton. When the defeated knights find themselves unable to pay the traditional ransoms to their captors, they will have only one course open to them—accruing interest by the hour. But when the most prominent money-lender, Benjamin Dudenay, is found brutally murdered a month before the festivities, Sir Baldwin Furnshill and Bailiff Simon Puttock find themselves on the trail of a most sinister killer. The Tournament of Blood is the eleventh tale in this superbly plotted medieval mystery series.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars "Good God, not another death!".......2007-09-17

At one point in this book, toward the end, protagonist Sir Baldwin exclaims "Good God, not another death! Will there never be an end to this."

I know just how he felt. One death is heaped upon another in this overly complicated tale and the resolution to them all, while no doubt in keeping with historical reality, was unsatisfactory to me.

I have read all of Jecks' prior books in the series, and own all the rest, to be read in turn. Yet, while I finish all of them (an indication of their merit, considering I don't waste time on books I consider poorly written or plotted) I never am completely happy with them.

As I've mentioned in my review of another Jecks book, one problem to me is that he needs a far better editor and proofreader. Misspellings and inconsistent spellings abound. One glaring example: in his Author's Note, he explains why he chooses to use the old spelling for the town of Okehampton (rather than the new version, Oakhampton). Yet, throughout the book, the new spelling is used! A small but niggling detail.

In addition, there are times when I feel Jecks goes overboard to parade all the research and facts he's learned, including all the terminology he can cram into the book. Yet, he uses other words and phrases which, while possibly having their roots in medieval Europe, sound false and anachronistic.

        SPOILER AHEAD ...

My biggest complaint about this book is that Jecks fails to provide key information that allows us to play detective and solve the mystery. The killer is "Mr. X" but "Mr. X" is in actuality "Mr. Z" Yet, throughout the book, he switches perspective to both characters and there is never any thought or action to betray the latter. I'm probably not making too much sense, but if you read the book, you'll understand. I don't want to give away the whole thing. Suffice it to say, I felt the ending was a bit of a cheat.

Yet, despite my complaints, I finished the book in just a few evenings and will go on to read more of Jecks. They're not perfect. In fact, they're not among the best historical mysteries I've read, but they have decent, evolving characters that make for an enjoyable read.

If you like this type of book, try the Chapman mysteries by Kate Sedley. Not as hard edged as Jecks' but engaging and historically accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Anything by Micahael Jecks.......2006-12-20

I confess to be an avid Jecks fan. Although, I do a great deal of academic reading, I got caught up in reading something just for my personal enjoyment yet that is quite well written and well researched. I was only introduced to Jecks' work recently, I have read every available book by him in or out of print in the US in a few months. I bought the recently released "The Death Ship of Dartmouth" and faithfully promised myself that I would put it on the shelf and wait a reasonable period of time to begin it and read it very slowly. Well, so much for a half a day and taking a few hours out for much needed sleep.

4 out of 5 stars Jecks is Always a Good Read.......2004-11-20

Michael Jecks writes some of the best medieval novels around. This one is no exception.
The book takes place in the spring of 1322, the setting a tournament held by Lord Hugh de Courtenay. The money lenders of Oakhampton see this as a great opportunity to fill their coffers. When the knights who are defeated find themselves unable to pay the ransoms to their opponents they will require the services of the money lenders, but one of the money lenders will not get the opportunity to do business. Benjamin Dudenay is found beaten to death before the tournament begins.
Sir Baldwin and his friend Simon have the task of completing the preparations for the tournament before Lord Hugh arrives but when the man commissioned to build the stands is found dead in an identical way to Benjamin, Sir Baldwin and Simon Puttock find themselves embroiled in the search for a killer

5 out of 5 stars Fine tension against a solid historical backdrop.......2002-10-07

This medieval mystery tells of a planned tournament to be hosted by Lord Hugh in 1322. A month before the planned event a man who whom knights are indebted is found murdered, and it's up to Sir Baldwin and his friend Bailiff Simon to complete preparations and investigate a possibly widereaching, sinister plan. Fine tension against a solid historical backdrop.

        5 out of 5 stars a gripping read.......2002-01-24

"The Tournament of Blood" is slightly different from previous West Country mysteries by Michael Jecks in that it does not focus so much on a rather chilling series of horrific murders and that there are a a lot more characters in this mystery novel than usual. So be forewarned: there are several knights and squires with similar names that a slightly less attentive reader could get quite confused over!

"The Tournament of Blood" opens with the murder of the money lender, Benjamin Dudenay, by Philip Tyrel (information given in the first chapter.) Many years ago, Tyrel lost his wife and children because of Dudenay; and seeing Dudenay again all these many years later, even more prosperous than before and apparently feeling no remorse for his crimes, pushes Tyrel to execute Dudenay quite brutally. Tyrel thinks that his rage is spent; however the authour let's us in on one piece of important information: that Tyrel will soon meet the other men who were responsible for his family's untimely death, and that he will kill again (again info from the first chapter).

It's 1322, and Hugh de Courtenay has decided to host a tournament to take his mind off his current political problems with King Edward II. Many knights have been invited, and Bailiff Simon Puttock has been asked to see to the preparations for the tournament. And while Puttock is thrilled to have been asked to undertake so important a task, having to deal with the sniveling and quarrelsome Hal Sachevyll and Wymond Carpenter, is more than he can bear! Sachevyll and Carpenter have been commissioned to design and construct the stands and have been complaining about shoddy materials and predicting accidents if the stands are constructed with such bad wood. They have demanded that better material be provided for them to work with. This Puttock is loathe to do because the pair have already been paid to buy the materials that they need. Puttock suspects that they have pocketed the money that should have gone towards buying good wood, buying shoddy wood instead. And he's not about to reward the duplicitous pair by paying for more wood to be bought. The quarrel between Sachevyll, Carpenter and Puttock becomes quite acrimonious and things look bad indeed for Puttock when Carpenter is found beaten to death in his tent, and he becomes a suspect of the murder.

Fortunately for Puttock, his good friend Sir Baldwin Furnshill, Keeper of the King's Peace, and the coroner, Sir Roger de Gidleigh, do not believe that he had anything to do with Carpenter's death, and they begin to look more closely into the murder. They discover that Carpenter was murdered in a manner similar to the moneylender Dudenay, and that Dudenay, Carpenter and Sahevyll were partners in quite a few enterprises. They also discover that quite a few people detested all three men -- from knights who blame them for the deaths incurred when their shoddy stands fell apart, to knights and squires who disliked Dubenay because they owed him money. In the meantime, Puttock is discovering that it is not easy to keep his attention focused on preparations for the tournament with a murder charge hanging over his head, his teenage daughter's sudden rebellious behaviour (and her sudden infatuation with a dislikable squire), and the Royal Herald's petty snipping! If only he could solve the murder before the tournament starts! But what Puttock, Sir Baldwin and Sir Roger don't realise is that Tyrel is in their midst under an assumed name, and that he is resolved to execute the third man he holds responsible for the loss of his family.

With this latest mystery novel, Michael Jecks again brings to life colourful 14th century England. The novel is peppered with enough historical fact, so that we understand the political reality of the time; but what I especially liked was his realistic portrayal of what a tournament entailed -- the brutality involved as well as the greed for ransoms (knights who loose the joust and who yield are then held for ransom by the victor). And I thought that Jecks did a wonderful job in depicting all the different hates that the knights and squires had for each other, as well as Puttock's daughter's sudden into bratty teenage behaviour. The mystery itself is a little more straight forward than usual, with very few twists and turns in plot development (except for how Jecks keeps us guessing as to which one of the suspects is Tyrel), however the tension and tight pacing was always there, and contributed a lot towards making this novel a gripping read. I enjoyed this novel immensely, and would heartily recommend to all mediaeval mystery fans.

No one who saw it will likely forget French golfer Jean Van de Velde's catastrophe at Carnoustie on the 72nd hole of the 1999 British Open. "Such theater!" writes Ben Hogan biographer Curt Sampson in Royal and Ancient, his stunning chronicle of the event. "Character is destiny, the ancient Greeks believed. And to many people--at Carnoustie and elsewhere, then and now--Van de Velde's unfolding disaster looked like an unmistakable expression of French style: cavalier, ironic, and more concerned with style than substance. He seemed to be treating the beloved Jug like a chamber pot." In one golf hole, what had been a tour de force devolved into a tour de farce. What writer could ask for more?

Not Sampson, who deftly uses Carnoustie as a prism to refract the history of golf's most storied tournament. Weaving back and forth through time, Royal and Ancient links the 1999 champion--playoff winner Paul Lawrie--to champions past, from the first--Willie Park in 1860--to Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and to those such as Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Tom Watson who've conquered the wind-wracked Carnoustie track before him. In his detailed recounting of '99 affair, Sampson certainly reports on the shots, but goes well beyond them into the minds of such competitors as veteran Steve Elkington; Zane Scotland, the youngest qualifier ever; and even John Philp, Carnoustie's proud, beleaguered superintendent, who constantly battled the elements and carping of the players and the press. Fittingly, the last word goes to Van de Velde, a fine golfer who chose the one moment the world was watching to come utterly undone. "It took a lot of bad luck for me to lose," he tells Sampson months after the tournament. "When I think about it now, I'm a little nostalgic.... It's not like I burn emotionally... but... I left more over there than I expected." Sampson brings it, and a good deal more, back for us. --Jeff Silverman

        Book Description

For a century and a half, the best golf players in the world have, once a year, attempted to beat the weather, the pressure, and one of the toughest courses in the world at the British Open. In Royal and Ancient, Curt Sampson, the bestselling author of Hogan and The Masters, draws a definitive and affectionate portrait of this legendary tournament, with a fascinating narrative of both its rich history and its exciting present.

The thread of Royal and Ancient is the 1999 cham-pionship--the most astonishing four days in British Open history. Sampson follows individual players as they meet the gut-wrenching challenge of the links at Carnoustie: the icy classicist, Steve Elkington; the good-looking bon vivant, Andrew Magee; the struggling hopeful, Clark Dennis; Zane Scotland, the youngest Open qualifier in history. Sampson is  there for Jean Van de Velde's dramatic collapse on the final day, probing both Van de Velde and his caddie for their emotional insights. He gets inside the heads of stars and journeymen, caddies and groundskeepers, and shows how they prepare and how they think as the tournament pro-gresses, from the qualifying rounds to the practice sessions, all the way through the play-off on the final day.

Beyond his excellent reportage, Curt Sampson captures British Open history as it's never been captured before. With an insider's knowledge and expertise, he draws us into the rare-fied atmosphere of tradition and myth, telling the amazing--and sometimes heartbreaking--stories of past champions, of triumphs and tragedies, of deaths and ghosts. We hear the unexpectedly poignant story of one of the early greats, Tommy Morris, the invincible champion of the 1860s and 1870s, and explore the loyal Scottish fascination with the legendary Ben Hogan. The reminiscences of past and current participants combine with the behind-the-scenes stories of everyone from the club superintendent to the local pub owners to give an intimate look at this unique tournament.

In his book The Majors, John Feinstein called Curt Sampson's The Masters the best book ever written about that Augusta event. Now, in Royal and Ancient, Sampson cracks the inner circle of another remarkable major to provide this fascinating and truly all-embracing view of the British Open.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Grandeur And Goofiness In The Kingdom Of Golf.......2006-06-09

Did Curt Sampson come to Carnoustie, Scotland in 1999 expecting to turn the British Open upside-down like he did Augusta National in "The Masters?" If so, he was beaten to the punch by a genial Frenchman named Jean Van de Velde who gave golf's signature event its wackiest finish ever.

I didn't like "The Masters" much; its agenda was a little harsh. But "Royal And Ancient" sees Sampson approach his topic with more respect, and get better results. He takes in the history of the Open, champions from Old Tom Morris to young Tom Watson, the sound of Carnoustie's winds whipping through the media tents and the dry fescue, and the separate pilgrimages three American golfers take for the big event.

"Royal And Ancient" is scattershot in many ways; none of the three golfers Sampson spotlights make the cut. He spends a good deal of time honing his Dan Jenkins aspirations, detailing the misadventures of a tour hanger-on who doesn't merit the print. Sampson wrote a famous bio on Ben Hogan, and there are times Sampson seems in danger of writing another here.

But after a slow beginning Sampson puts you right at the center of things, analyzes expectations against results and giving a thorough sense of what a British Open entails by using this particular year's edition as a case study. He rambles some, but he tells some fun stories and quotes some interesting people.

The big controversy at Carnoustie most of the week was the condition of the course, with the rough grown so high players could not try to advance the ball if it went off the fairway. A writer likens it to asking basketball players to play with a medicine ball. Meanwhile, course superintendent John Philp argues the game is supposed to be a test of skill and not a birdie racket.

"Carnoustie in 1999 looked like it had been working out," Sampson opines. "And had joined a motorcycle gang."

A tough layout made for a strange leaderboard, topped much of the time by Van de Velde, a Frenchman who at the last hole in regulation demonstrated the Frenchness of the words "elan" and "folly." Sampson does a great job describing the scene, Van de Velde going for the green with a three-stroke lead rather than sensibly lay up. The result was one of those bizarre moments that make sports fans out of casual bystanders, and a Scot named Paul Lawrie who made the local fans very happy.

"Except for the heroic Nicklaus versus Watson duel at Turnberry in 1977, no Open finish in the TV age could compare. But there is romance in tragedy, and tragedy in romance, and the travails of the doomed, flawed hero affect us more deeply than someone's big win," Sampson writes.

Maybe, but Sampson finds Van de Velde months after defying expectations he would shrivel up like a raisin from his shame. Instead, he kept his head high, determined to enjoy what he can from life.

Still, it was a lot easier to enjoy the 1999 British Open if you weren't Van de Velde, and easier still enjoying it with the help of Sampson's clever, comprehensive book.

5 out of 5 stars Never Compromise at "The" Open.......2003-02-02

Sampson for me is the consummate golf writer; clever, knows his game and does it all creatively. Witness the way he puts together this chronicle of The Open. Starts with the Morris' and their famed dominance of early golf, then the interest of England and the rest.

Interwoven here are the rest of glorious Open history-Palmer, Player, Nicklaus, Watson, and Hogan. Then the tie with Carnoustie and the wee little iceman.

Boy this author can captivate you while getting it all down. This flows and ebbs till it ends up at the Burn and that 18th. Never Compromise --- great putting with new found friend--- never compromise style -- must go for it!

This is like author's other books (try them out, especially Hogan and Eternal Summer and Masters, they're favorites) this was just excellent reading to the end.

        5 out of 5 stars Royal.......2000-08-01

Golf is more than a game. When we can not play the game, we watch it. When we can not watch the game, we read about it. And who is best at capturing the feeling of the game of golf on print than Curt Sampson? He is the story-teller of golf.

        5 out of 5 stars well done.......2000-07-26

a great job of not only capturing the 1999 open, but also giving the reader the feel for the history and passion of the open.

        5 out of 5 stars Sampson's Best.......2000-07-11

Only the very best writers can sustain drama when they're recounting events whose outcome is already well-known--and who isn't aware of Jean Van de Veld's slow-motion deflation on the final hole at the 1999 British Open at Carnoustie, the culminating event in Curt Sampson's splendid new book, Royal and Ancient? Sampson's a wonderful phrase-maker-writing of Tiger's "adhesive gallery" is a good example-with an ample feeling for the game and the people who make it interesting, from the tournament players at the forefront to the deeply sequestered greenkeepers, such as Carnoustie's John Philp, who tried to defend the old links against the assaults of a generation of golf pros who regard birdies as a birthright. Sampson's written other good books, but this one is superb.

            Book Description

Everyone knows the story of Rapunzel. Rapunzel of the golden hair, Rapunzel who lives in a tall tower. But who is Rapunzel, really? Does she like living way up high in that tower?

The answer is "no," and the story that unfolds is of what she does after her escape. First she falls in love with a prince, but he turns out to be a cad. Then she goes to work for a silversmith, but he turns out to be a cad. Then she meets another prince, and he turns out to be a cat! He's actually a human, but an evil hex has given him the feline form. There could be worse fates, but Prince Hemingway really needs to save his kingdom and that's not easy when you have a fluffy tail and furry little paws. He and Rapunzel form an alliance, and despite her naivete, she is determined to help him.

Fly through time, space and dimension with Rapunzel and Prince Hemingway, as they seek out their only hope: Ernest Hemingway, the mortal Word Wizard who holds the key to the prince's future.

There's just one small problem...Ernest doesn't know he's in on it!

5 out of 5 stars My go-to book for fun and relaxation;)..........2006-09-26

This has been my go-to book for fun and relaxation...I thoroughly enjoyed reading every page and found myself chuckling frequently over the word plays and historical references with a twist. For instance in Wilson's carefully created parallel universe, there's mention of the War of the Posies like our War of the Roses...very funny:) Furthermore, as a lover of quantum physics, I love the fact that Wilson's Rapunzel lives in a parallel universe in a different space/time dimension; these are all quantum mechanical ideas. And Ms. Wilson's Othruthian Rapunzel is no mere trophy female like our Earthly Rapunzel. Rather, she is a both strong and beautiful young woman with incredible stamina. She's able to climb tall mountains, save animals, and even save a human male named Hemingway (who is under a spell). Hemingway has been turned into a cat by his half-sister. This Othruthian Rapunzel is in fact what I call a She-ro, for she risks her life more than once to save this human-cat Hemingway. My only criticism is that it was too short because it left me wanting more!

5 out of 5 stars fun adult fairy tale.......2003-05-05

Rapunzel feels gratitude towards her rescuer Prince D'arius for she loathes the tower where she was incarcerated until he freed her. She falls in love with her hero, but alas this is not a fairy tale where they live happily ever after. D'arius is a married man. Rapunzel is saddened but wiser to the insincere male world she has just joined.

Rapunzel refuses to let down her hair ever again when the next male in her life, Master Eremis the silversmith, turns out to be as much as a cad as her prince. On the other hand, she feels quite safe with a male cat Hemingway that she finds until she learns that her feline is actually a prince caught in a changing spell. He persuades the kind but still naive Rapunzel to save his people from an evil that wants to destroy them, but to do so they must to travel through time to enlist a help of a twentieth century word wizard sharing a surname and more with the feline prince.

This adult fairy tale will leave readers laughing especially at the puns and other bon mots that would send Sigmund Furred to a littered couch. The story line is loaded with amusing action as Rapunzel gains insight to the road rules of the real world which leads to fans enjoying this facetious follow-up to the Rapunzel tale. Aside to Staci Layne Wilson: In an emergency room in Germany, doctors perform surgery opening the stomach of a wolf in an attempt to free a senior citizen swallowed alive while the woman's red hooded granddaughter walks the waiting room.

5 out of 5 stars What happened to Rapunzel after she got out of the tower?.......2003-05-04

Thanks to Argus, a wizard, we get to finally get to find out what happened to Rapunzel after the tower. Though the story of Rapunzel is a fairy tale to us, to Argus and the Othruthians, the people among whom she lives, Rapunzel's quite real. Even though the Orthruthians live in a parallel universe, there are a few similarities to ours. After Rapunzel is rescued by Prince D'arius, she discovers that Earth and Othruth co-exist.

Before I go on, I'd like to tell you that in the land of Orthruth, they have computers and electricity, but no cars--a case of magick meeting science. It is things like this that make this story so intriguing. Some of the modern conveniences help to balance out the story of helping Rapunzel find her way.

What Rapunzel believes for her future is not to be. So she seeks a future that can bring her some peace. In her travels, Rapunzel runs into an injured cat. He tells her ... tells her? *g* ... that he is trapped and that he needs her help. This cat is named Hemingway, and if you were not already into THE LIFE AND TIMES OF RAPUNZEL, from here on you will not be able to take your eyes off of the page!

Hemingway is actually Prince Hemingway, of the kingdom of Khatt. His half-sister hexed him in order to take over the kingdom, and turned him into a cat. He escaped to try and find a wizard with similar skills to remove the hex, in order to try and save his kingdom. Rapunzel and Hemingway embark upon a journey to find just the person they need. They get into all kinds of scrapes, and even end up on Earth more than once in their trek.

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF RAPUNZEL is a wonderful fantasy story blended with a nice tale of romance and humor. This book was full of everything fantasy - wizards, gargoyles, dragons and more. The excitement was non-stop.

Rapunzel truly loves Hemingway as he's her only friend, whereas Hemingway cannot believe how strong Rapunzel is and what she is going through in order to help him. The character development was amazing in THE LIFE AND TIMES OF RAPUNZEL. Rapunzel is truly awesome. She kept her head in all situations. She proved loyalty beyond belief. Hemingway will impress each and every reader. He never lost sight of his objective. He had to endure quite a bit in order to achieve his goals. As a feline and a man, Hemingway made an incredible impression on me. Ms. Wilson did a tremendous job, and I'm pleased to add THE LIFE AND TIMES OF RAPUNZEL to my keeper shelf.

5 out of 5 stars A real treat for cat lovers.......2003-05-02

This tongue in cheek novel is written in a light and witty style, reminiscent of a cross between Doug Adams and Rita Mae Brown. The furry hero, Hemingway, is a wonderfully caustic cat character and his 'damsel to the rescue', Rapunzel is a real delight. These are characters you care about, which is saying something. I hope there IS a sequal, as was hinted at in the book's ending.

            5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers!.......2003-04-25

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF RAPUNZEL is a humorous and enjoyable trip through Punsville, USA. This fantasy world is filled with wonderfully imaginative things like Trolls, gargoyle monkeys (who resemble those found in Oz), dragons, hags and crones, and even historical figures (caricatures?) in cameo roles. Equally "punny" are the book's characters: Sigmund Furred, Manny Manx, Siameez, or King Paathrea of Khatt (no cats allowed there, however). I laughed until my ribs ached, and kept turning pages eager for the next surprise.

In a market of crossover books and literary genres expanding beyond normalized boundaries, I have to say that no one I've read writes a fractured fairy tale like Staci Wilson. This is the first time I've reviewed for her and I'm glad I did. She's already a noted author in horror and it looks like she's well on her way to creating a niche for herself as a fantasy author as well...

            5 out of 5 stars A Simple Approach.......2007-04-10

Beginning triathletes or those who just don't have time to build their own training programs will find this simple approach to the sport appealing.

            4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile read.......2007-04-03

I'm a book junkie...especially "how to" books on things I love to do (like triathlon.) This one's got plenty of good information, and I like the simpler approach. However, if you're an elite athlete (or wannabe), perhaps this may be too simplistic. Things I liked:
            - The simplistic approach to training (I just don't have time to break down my build phase into 5 periodized segments :-))
            - The emphasis on establishing *realistic* goals
            - The creative training log formats
            - Many good ideas & suggestions to take away and use in a way that works for *you*.
There simply is no one-size-fits-all, magical training program out there that will turn you into a better triathlete. Every person's goals, abilties, time schedule/commitments, and life in general are unique. So, glean some new ideas from this and other good books out there, and design the best program for you. This one, in my opinion, has plenty to offer.
