Not Camus' Best.......2007-08-14
The language in this short novel is simple and engaging, and probably the best (if not only) reason to read this book, particularly for students of french such as myself.
Unfortunately the story is very contrived and unconvincing, despite Camus' apparent attempts to ground it in a believable, ordinary world. The problem (as I see it) is that Mersault is easily Camus' least interesting protagonist, and the entire story is told in first person from his perspective. Mersault feels nothing and thinks nothing throughout the narrative, so that the narration gives the reader an intimate view of... nothing. Admittedly, previous and subsequent authors have dealt quite thoroughly with the thoughts and feelings of human characters in somewhat analogous situations to that of Mersault. Perhaps Camus was consciously treading new ground by placing his protagonist in what would be trying and difficult situations if only he cared about anything, but he doesn't, so they aren't.
There is plenty of good Camus out there, particularly his short stories and plays, but this is not it.
What a way to begin a story?! And what can one say about Camus that hasn't already been said? This is a great novel filled with observations, images and actions carefully stitched into words by a master narrator. If you're a novice to French literature, this is a perfect place to begin.
Tout simplement exquis!.......2005-05-12
Quel roman savoureux. Du passé simple, j'en prendrais volontier. Un incontournable.
The "Sacred Cow" of Camus and Existentialism.......2005-04-30
I first read the novel in english, but I read it in french once I became fluent in that language. After the first sentence: "Aujourd'hui, Maman est morte," you know that you are in the good hands of Albert Camus. The existential theme is just awsome, and it was all the better en français! Surtout, je sait que je l'aimais.

Etudiant Etranger is a must-read for those studying French who can read at an advanced or high intermediate level. It tells about Philippe Labro's exchange experience when he leaves France to study abroad in the US (in Virginia). View the US from the eyes of a Frenchman.
Philippe Labro in France is the equivalent of Peter Jennings in the US.

Book Description
Batman: The Complete Knightfall Saga is inspired by the bestselling Batman storylines Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd. With Batman crippled by his fiercest foe, a new hero tries to fill his shoes in protecting Gotham City. But his methods are brutal and dangerous, and the future of Gotham City is uncertain. In June 2005, Batman Begins will be released in movie theatres, starring Christian Bale and featuring Michael Caine, Katie Holmes, and Liam Neeson. Interest in the Batman franchise will surge, with a huge marketing campaign and the star power casting.

An audio trip to Gotham.......2007-04-30
The Knightfall Saga is well executed, especially given the inherent difficulty of transforming an action-heavy adventure from the highly visual medium of comics into a format that uses only music, sound effects and actors' voices. Bob Sessions brings a wonderful depth to the role of Batman; you can literally feel Batman's utter exhaustion as he fights to restore order to Gotham City.
I've never read any of the comics that inspired this audio drama, so I can't comment on whether or not this production does the original storyline justice.
This audio drama assumes that the listener is somewhat familiar with Batman's history. However, even the casual Batman follower will find the story relatively easy to follow--and highly entertaining.
Entertaining.......2007-03-16
Fast-paced, loud, chaotic, sometimes confusing. Sounds like a typical night with Batman. Also, it describes this audiobook.
This project was completed as a full-fledged production, just like an old-time radio show rather than having one reader cover all of the characters. I am an occassional Batman reader but a regular listener to audiobooks and I found this one to be outstanding.
I am not totally enamored - the ending was too "Leave It To Beaver", the Joker degenerated from credible threat to goofy annoyance as the story went along and Avenging Angel Azrael was more hilarious than scary on the first CD (he constantly yelled out the beginnings of a speech about transgressors, punishment, etc. He did it so many times that it became slapstick).
However, I'm going to grade it on a Batman curve. Was it better than the movies? All but the Nicholson "Batman" and "Batman Begins". I looked forward to hearing more of it during my commute (unlike Clooney's Batman - I watch just to see if it is as bad as I remember - and invariably they are worse!)
Others who have reviewed this one have complained about the use of sound effects to describe the battle scenes. I liked it - it reminded me of the sound effects as described in a comic - Thwap! Pow! The audiobook covered it in a similar manner to keep the pace going.
Kerry Shale did a tremendous job as the voice of Joker, especially in the opening scenes at Arkham Asylum.
Despite its flaws, I give this one a grade of A-.
I waited a long time for this to be printed on CDs.......2007-03-13
Worth the wait. The dramatization isn't the best of the best, but still has re-listenability.
Good, but has flaws........2006-06-27
As a fan of all incarnations of Batman, this audio book delivered a much needed fix. The action is fast paced and the premise is a good one. Lots of different voice actors with Alfred being the highlight. I actually thought the Joker was a good one, though I much rather Mark Hamill's rendition in the animated series. There are lots of voice actors here, rather that an audiobook's usual one.
However, there are some flaws. It can move too quickly at times, leaving the listener floundering to keep up. I would have much rather had it drawn out for better character development. The action sequences are over quickly, and usually only battle sound effects. Almost everything is acted 3rd person, so we don't get into the minds of the characters often.
That said, I did enjoy listening to this and the conclusion was satisfying. It has terrific potential to be adapted to the big screen or as a series. Still, I would not pay good money to buy this...I got mine at my local library.
Laughable (for kids only).......2005-10-05
Batman sounds like Van Helsing's Hugh Jackman and Bane sounds like Bela Lugosi Dracula. Azreal voiced by the guy who voices Batman and during the third disc sounds like Darth Vader. Joker is annoying and the other villains sound like wannabes. Alfred is the only enjoyable voice acting and that's because Michael Gough (Alfred) from Batman and Batman Returns.
At times the music reminds me of the original TV show. Don't listen to the boneheads reviewing this, this is really bad and it goes to show you that 90 percent of a making a movie (in this case a audio track with music) casting is the most important element. The script is also rewritten for children can understand.
Fans of The Batman will eat up. Fans of Batman: The Animated Series will loathe it. Read the darker comics that inspired this flop instead. But if you find Joel Schumacher the superior Batman (sighs) than this is for you. Fans of the darker Batman will vomit choking it down.

The Power Of Radio.......2002-12-15
It's a misnomer to call this an audiobook, because it's something far more interesting. KnightFall is a a full scale radio play with sound effects, character readings and brilliant editting that surpasses even the fantastic National Public Radio production of Star Wars.
This book is brilliant and after listening to it, I felt more like I'd seen a really great movie than listened to an audiobook.
It's simply fantastic!
BATMAN: THE COMPLETE KNIGHTFALL SAGA.......2002-10-25
This full cast audio drama was originally released on BBC tapes. Michael Gough had reprised his role of Alfred from the recent movies. The story features the Joker, the Riddler, the Mad Hatter, and Knightwing.

Keep things in perspective...........2000-08-04
Firstly, I am glad that the previous reviewer enjoyed the art enclosed. However, art is subjective and I have to admit that I was disappointed in the portayals of the characters in pictures. Elmore is still my favorite DL artist. One of the reason I picked Krynn as the world I will build an epic campaign upon is the art associated with it. If you are wanting to run the original adventures, track down the modules through friends, auctions, and used book stores. But still get this book in order to expand your knowledge of the chronicles and such. In my case I will be running a campaign that is not going to follow the chronicles. However the heroes of the lamce will be there doing what they always do. If the player characters encounter them, any number of things could happen. I am gathering as many resourcesas possible in order to be prepared for whatever may come. That is what makes this book essential. My player characters may wind up having to take over for Tanis, Raistlin, and Tas if they cause trouble. Need better maps? Track down the atlas, trail map, original modules or just use your own creativity.
Really, Really BAD.......2000-05-29
This Campaign really is bad. It is just an attempt to feed off the popularity of dragonlance books. I would recomend some other books that are more organized. Evberything is not easy to understand and is far too boring. There is no reason someone should get this book, it is far to boring to come of use. The only good point is the map of Krynn.
Great for old-timers and newbies alike!.......2000-05-14
The Dragonlance Saga is the longest-standing TSR series ever, the archetype of "classic" AD&D. With the advent of the SAGA rules system, however, and the absence of Weis and Hickman in the creative process until recently, Dragonlance has taken a turn for the worse. However, this book is a great way to get back to the basics of what made Dragonlance and AD&D great back in the late 80s. Old-timers can play the epic again in a stream-lined, comprehensive book, made new by the inclusion of SAGA-style rules. Classic AD&D rules are also provided, though I recommend giving SAGA a shot, even if you're not into the Fifth Age products. Those new to the Dragonlance series can take part in what made it so great. The Chronicles and Legends novels have seen their third or fourth reprint for good reason.
I do have a few gripes about the material. I suggest that the referee running the adventure be familiar with the novels and make suitable changes as he sees fit. In some ways, this adventure follows the original adventure modules more than it does the novels, meaning that the same inconsistencies exist, even though Dragonlance Classics does include several sections explaining how the plot was advanced in the novels. I advise making some changes to the statistics of the characters to better reflect the novels. If you have any of the expansion material for Fifth Age, you can still use some of it to enhance your use of this product--there are simply a few adjustments to be made, which are not difficult at all.
In short, any Dragonlance or AD&D fan looking for a quality product should seriously consider this one. They are few and far between.
Nostalgia.......2000-04-27
I read the Dragonlance Chronichles nearly ten years ago now, but I've just recently started playing D&D. I can tell you that this book is great no matter what angle you approach it from. As a reader it goes into details that were never covered in the novels, like what happened at the Icewall. As a player and more recently a DM this book provides what are in my opinion some of the finest written D&D adventures.
And don't let the SAGA rule system turn you off, the book includes regular AD&D stats for everything as well.
I can't recommend this enough.

Book Description
Who killed Ambassador Bloodarrow?
When the Lord of Tarsis finds himself with a politically volatile murder on his hands, he turns to the three most expendable inhabitants of the city of a solution. A mercenary, a poet-assassin, and a thief might not be everyone's first choice for detectives. But they find they're quite good at bringing murderers to justice.
Perhaps a little too good . . .
Customer Reviews:
Not Bad, but not Great either!.......2004-06-15
Slightly better than both Murder in Cormyr and Murder in Halruaa, but still a bit of a disappointment! Well written, but not the kind of book that you'll have trouble putting down. The plot and setting are ok, but that's it, mediocre; nothing more, nothing less. It is very unfortunate that the Murder Series came to an end before the writing of Murder in Ravens Bluff and WotC should reconsider their decision now that years have gone by and maybe resurrect the project, but considering the poor work included in these books I can at least understand why they did so back then. In conclusion, the heroes are average, the villains are very weak, the plot is ok and the writing is good. My advice, read it only after you're done reading most of the other Dragonlance books such as in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies, and you are still in need of more Krynn related material; at least you'll get a slight hint/taste of Ansalon.
PS What was the point of including Badar in the book? The character's contribution to the plot is nil.
Pretty painful reading.......2001-04-09
I tried my hardest to ignore the bad reviews here on this book...but it was pretty bad. I felt like I was reading a scooby doo book. Especially towards the end when they almost literally pull a mask off of someone. I guess I suggest this to dragonlance lovers of course. and I suggest this to mystery book lovers. But if your looking for action or strong character development, its not here. Also while i can usually look past dragonlance flaws, its really hard to accept, not just one baby dragon who may have woken up on accident from its stasis, its very hard to accept that its mother would come searching for it. This makes me think that Mr. Roberts hasnt, in fact, done much research on the dragonlance world, which is disappointing.
Good enough, but not accurate relative to history of Krynn.......1999-10-20
The book was enjoyable to read and the caracters were interesting, but one thing is dead wrong with this Dragonlance novel: it happens between the Cataclysm and the War of the Lance, a time at which there no dragons (they were gone since a thousand years and more, see Legend of Huma), yet Roberts has put a black dragon right in the middle of his book. The dragon appears and nobody knows that they are supposed to be children's tales, not real beasts, nobody is affraid, nobody find this unusual at all!
So much for history...
Great story, but the ending dissapoints........1999-06-09
Roberts has created some vibrant characters in this mystery about three misfit's given the responsiblity to solve a murder in the midst of a near-siege of Tarsis. The personal history surrounding Ironwood, the mercenary, and Stunbog, the former mage, is especially rich. The book leaves the reader guessing at the identity of the murderer all the way to the very end of the novel. And this is where I felt the book failed. A good mystery novel should present all the clues and motives needed to solve the crime before it reaches the last few pages. 'Murder in Halruha' and 'Murder in Cormyr' serve as very good examples of this. But 'Murder in Tarsis' dissapoints, because it presents key clues and most importantly the murderer's motive at the very end of the novel. The reader never has a chance to deduce who the killer is or why he/she did it. That's why someone will read mystery novels versus other type of novels after all. Because they want to test their powers of deduction. This book never gives the reader the oppurtunity to do so. An even better mystery novel will redirect or mislead the reader subtlely to suspect other characters of being the culprit. But without any real clues, save at the ending of the novel, the reader doesn't even know who to suspect in this story. The ending also lacked the excitement many have come to associate with suspense stories. Roberts has a good writing style and he knows how to create interesting characters, but his ability to create mystery novels is sorely lacking. If you are looking for a good fantasy mystery novel I highly suggest either 'Murder in Halruha' or 'Murder in Cormyr". Better yet, read them both.
Good, but definetly not great........1998-11-29
This book was good, but as I said, not great. The ending was just too abrupt. It was as if a god just came down and whispered the answers in their ears, and *POOF*, so-and-so killed so-and-so because of such-and-such. The rest of the book was quite good, though.
Book Description
Blends the ancient science of yoga with the unique training possibilities of the exercise ball to create an innovative and effective workout.
• A unique combination of Hatha Yoga asanas and ball work that builds lean muscles while providing natural stress relief.
• Includes a comprehensive workout adaptable to the needs of the beginner and those with a more advanced practice.
Written by Certified Medical Exercise Specialist Carol Mitchell, Yoga on the Ball combines the science of yoga with the technology of the exercise ball to create a workout that can be tailored to all fitness levels. Moving through yoga postures while using the exercise ball is meditation in motion. It allows you to engage several muscle groups simultaneously to create a total body workout and to lose weight naturally as your metabolism increases with special breathing techniques. The exercise ball provides a soft and cushioning base for the strong stretches and graceful movements of the yoga exercises, and with only a slight roll of the ball, the deep stretches can be altered to target different areas of the muscles.
The complete workout lets you choose between sculpting your muscles with cardiovascular and muscle-toning exercises or relaxing your body and mind with stretching and breathing exercises. Yoga on the Ball pairs breathing and movement to create a rejuvenating flow of energy that will realign your mind and body, leaving you feeling calm, strong, and centered.
Customer Reviews:
Decent introduction to adapting yoga postures to the ball.......2005-01-17
I have practiced yoga for several years now but just recently purchased a stability ball, so I wanted a book that would teach me how to adapt yoga postures to ball work. Author Carol Mitchell takes awhile to actually get into the exercises, as she goes into quite a bit of detail about yoga tradition, yogic breathing, and posture work. While this information might be helpful to someone totally new to yoga, I found it to be overly long-winded and was eager to get started.
Mitchell begins the practice section with yoga sun salutations modified for the ball. Although the sun salutation series is traditionally performed in a relatively brisk flow to warm up the body for more challending asana work, I found the ball version to be rather awkward, making it much more difficult to move smoothly through the series. Mitchell then moves on to several chapters of postures on the ball; I found these sections to be much more relevant. It was interesting to learn how the ball could be used to enhance the classic poses, sometimes making the poses easier and at other times making them more difficult. For every exercise, Mitchell presents at least two and often three different levels of difficulty, which allows you to customize your practice. Each chapter focuses on a particular practice goal: flexibility and strength, balance, advanced work, and relaxation. At times, the ball seems to be used only for the sake of incorporating it somehow--eg, holding the ball over your head--rather than as an integral part of the yoga posture.
A final chapter, "Putting It All Together," explains how to combine the various asanas presented to create a practice customized to your particular level and goals. Although each speciality practice is illustrated, I found the diagrams somewhat hard to follow, both here and elsewhere in the book. A nice bonus at the end of the book is an appendix which reviews all of the major muscle groups and their functions; this was perhaps the most clear and concise summary of this topic which I have ever seen. Overall, this book provided a decent introduction to mostly beginner's level yoga work on the stability ball, and it is probably best suited to those new to both yoga and ball work. Rating: 3 1/2 stars.
Over sixty postures from introductory to advanced.......2004-04-03
In Yoga On The Ball, medical exercise specialist Carol Mitchell offers an interesting new form of yoga workout combination which blends yoga with the exercise ball concept. Chapters survey how the exercise ball allows the yoga practitioner to build different muscle groups: over sixty postures from introductory to advanced are detailed with step-by-step instructions and photos.
