If you loved "The Rules for Being Human" attributed to "Anonymous" in the bestseller Chicken Soup for the Soul, you're in luck. The author--corporate trainer Chérie Carter-Scott, Ph.D.--has stepped forward and written a follow-up book: If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules. This book, "a basic spiritual primer for what it means to be a human," discusses each of the 10 rules (e.g., "There are no mistakes, only lessons," and "Lessons are repeated until learned,") and discusses them with kindness, eloquence, and wisdom. For example, rule 1 is, "You will receive a body. You may love it or hate it, but it will be yours for the duration of your life on Earth." Carter-Scott discusses the challenge of making peace with the body we've been given, and the lessons of acceptance (appreciating it as it is), self-esteem (viewing yourself as worthy, despite how your body looks or performs), respect (treating it like a "valuable and irreplaceable object"), and pleasure (indulging in the five senses to "unlock the joy stored within you"). Similarly, each of the rules has four "lessons." You'll read this inspirational book more than once, and mark quotes to tell friends. --Joan Price

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Before Cherie Carter-Scott discovered her true calling as a writer of inspirational books, she worked as a teacher. As she reads, her experience and talents as an instructor are evident. She carefully outlines her rules and lessons, frequently slowing her cadence to verbally highlight key points for her "students." Fortunately, Carter-Scott's reading is more like listening to an insightful and sometimes humorous storyteller than sitting in a classroom waiting for the bell to ring. You're likely to find yourself nodding in recognition of shared human foibles, and Carter-Scott speaks with such contagious enthusiasm that even the most resistant among us will be persuaded to do a bit of self-examination. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Elizabeth Laskey

1. You will receive a body.

3. There are no mistakes, only lessons.
4. Lessons are repeated until learned.
5. Learning does not end.
6. "There" is no better than "here."

9. All the answers lie inside of you.
10. You will forget all of this at birth.

If life is a game, what are the rules?

We all know the feeling: In the game of life, why am I the only one who doesn't know how to play? But now, help is at hand, because this wonderful little book will teach you the rules so that you can conquer life's challenges and manage its unpredictable ups and downs.

For one of her workshops several years ago, Chérie Carter-Scott, a corporate trainer and consultant, composed a list of basic truths about life, which she named "The Ten Rules for Being Human." Right away, the Rules resonated with her clients, who photocopied and passed the list to friends and relatives. Within months, Chérie's Rules were in thousands of homes all over the country, and eventually, they were published in Chicken Soup for the Soul and have also appeared in Ann Landers' column. Although there's no formula to help you win the game of life, Chérie's Rules convey a universal wisdom that, once understood and embraced, can contribute to meaningful relationships with ourselves and others, at work and in the home.

In If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules, Chérie shares that there are no mistakes in life, only lessons that are repeated. In thoughtful, inspirational essays illustrated with encouraging personal anecdotes, she includes the lessons that can be learned from each of the Rules and offers insights on self-esteem, respect, acceptance, forgiveness, ethics, compassion, humility, gratitude, and courage. Best of all, Chérie shows that wisdom lies inside each one of us and that by putting the Ten Rules for Being Human into action we can create a more fulfilling life.

Chicken Soup for the Soul, they instantly became a favorite section of that wildly successful book.

Now Carter-Scott, an internationally acclaimed motivational speaker, brings the rules to life by applying them to anecdotes drawn from her own encounters, as well as stories from her family, close friends, and workshop participants. Presented in a personal format, these steps to becoming a satisfied and well-adjusted person are sure to garner an even wider following. -->

This book was presented to me when I was already on my deliberate conscious path. If I would have read this book when I first begun my journey perhaps it would have resulted in having even more clarity to work with. But either way, the book is a must read for those who desire to move forward int their lives.

4 out of 5 stars If There Is a Healthy Self-Help Book, This Is The One.......2005-09-09

Many of the concepts she puts forth in the book are time-tested and clearly communicated. Her agenda appears to be to help readers find what is true for themselves by using the 'rules' and their explanations, rather than to dictate black and white do's and don'ts. Her examples demonstrate the underlying challenges to living a successful life and she offers healthy choices for behavior and attitude. She writes from compassion rather than ego, from a desire to reach out, rather than to preach.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful book filled with wisdom.......2004-08-17

I first listened to this on audio tape and was so impressed by the principles put forth that I purchased the hardcover copy to read. I found this to be one of those books that helps us put things in perspective while providing tangible ways to improve our lives. The best thing I can ever say about a book is that I keep it in my personal library and go back to it over and over. I do that with both the audio and hard copy versions of this work. Thank you Cherie Carter-Scott!

The definition of success (at least in America) is outward accomplishment, whether it's amassing a fortune or leaving a legacy of influence. But a personal sense of well-being or fulfillment--finding love and time with family--is often the inward measurement of success. The two need not be mutually exclusive, says Chérie Carter-Scott, an internationally recognized motivational speaker and management consultant who's written several other "rule" books, such as If Love Is a Game, These Are the Rules. She says that success is achieved only "when your own sense of well being and the extended symbols of accomplishment converge," a feat she says can be met by following her 10 basic guidelines about self-acceptance and self-motivation.

Fortunately, her rules are easy to follow--no misty metaphors or perplexing parables. Each chapter is neatly devoted to a specific rule, such as "your actions affect your outcomes," or "success is a process that never ends." Real-life stories illustrate each rule, making the advice feel personal and applicable. When addressing rule 2, "wanting success is the first step in attaining it," Carter-Scott helps readers handle sabotaging loved ones who may feel threatened or jealous by your success, such as the mother who didn't want her son to apply to medical school because he might not be able to handle the rejection, or the so-called "best friend" who always insulted her friend's new clothing business.

In the chapter on rule 3, "self-trust is essential," we meet Paul, the miserable banker who yearned to be an art dealer but wore the "golden handcuffs" of his big salary. A few years after analyzing his life and deciding to make a change, "Paul has become a successful art dealer, making close to the same salary he was making before," writes Carter-Scott. "Only now it brings him joy rather than binding him to his life." Although some of the examples may feel predictable, Carter-Scott's warm, folksy style should appeal to many readers, helping them to identify goals and follow through on them. --Gail Hudson

"If Success Is a Game, These Are the Rules by Cherie Carter-Scott, Ph.D. provides a thoroughly researched, thoughtful account outlining the ten rules for achieving success alongside fulfillment. Her interview subjects convey compelling life stories with sometimes shockingly unexpected outcomes. Through her insightful research, she reveals the mindset and the heart necessary for achieving a fulfilled life. In the acknowledgements of Kirby Thibeault's book titled Wealth, he highlights how "societies are built on the underlying values they instill in their peoples, which seem to change from time to time. However, what does not ever change is the beauty of the human spirit and all that it can accomplish when realized." Cherie Carter-Scott, Ph.D., like Kirby Thibeault, understands with clarity that success is something beyond mere materialism and common convention. As taught by Kirby Thibeault, the greatest conceivable success is personal achievement for the betterment of all humanity."

Have you ever found a book that can serve and satisfy all criterias?

Strentghs: simple, easy to read, great examples.
I agree with the reader from San Francisco, CA USA
In a way it has much better explanation of success than in UP. Each book has its own strengths and weaknesses. They may not suit all your criterias.

Weaknesses:???

For specific cases you don't understand and are unsure, you just have to consult with the expert or buy another book that fills the gap or ask somebody who may be able to help.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book that will help you discover success.......2002-07-27

Read IF SUCCESS IS A GAME, THESE ARE THE RULES
by Cherie Scott-Cater . . . this is a wonderful self-help book,
but don't be put of by that description if you're not typically
a fan of such material.

Scott-Carter will make you a convert as she helps you discover
what determine what success means to you . . . and that is
perhaps the key benefit you'll gain from reading her book;
i.e., it enables you to come up with you own definition and
then achieve it via ten simple rules.

I liked her use of examples, as well as probing
questions . . . methinks you will, too, and you'll be surprised
about how inspired you will be to achieve your various goals.

There were many memorable passages; among them:
I notice that many people put off doing this exercise [writing one's ideal obituary] because it confronts them with the reality of their mortality. I have found, conversely, that when you really examine your life head-on, you can be painfully honest about what you want to accomplish throughout your life. It is a bit uncomfortable writing down big dreams because they may sound highly ambitious or self-aggrandized, but unless you allow yourself to imagine your ideal life, you can never begin to make it happen. Imagining yourself at the end of your life looking back is a helpful tool to articulate what it is that you hope to accomplish during your lifetime.

The formula to find your path to fulfillment is astonishingly simple: Follow your preferences, and they will lead you to your path. Find what brings you joy and satisfaction, and trust that it will also bring you prosperity. Find what makes your blood boil, and trust that it will also fuel your existence. Discover what makes your heart sing, and trust that it will create music in your life. In other words, find what matters to you, and trust that it is the signpost you have been looking for.

One of the things that my clients and friends both love and hate me for is the fact that upon hearing them express a vision, I immediately ask, "When would you like to do that?" I do this because I am eager to see them have what they want. I know the only way this happens is through commitment.

4 out of 5 stars Getting started in the right direction.......2002-02-20

This book supplies a lot of great information, but at a level of generalization that will only get you started in the direction of where you really need to go . . . it will not teach you the skills you need to get there. Perhaps that's too obvious to even mention! Nevertheless, I found this book very helpful and I recommend it. I also highly recommend "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Book of Eastern Wisdom" by Taro Gold. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Elegant and Readable.......2001-02-27

Cherie Carter-Scott has a way of causing you to say, "I knew that, why haven't I done it?" The essential element of the book is simple. It's like the old saying, "if you don't know where you're going, then any path will take you there." The rules she gives you aren't difficult, but they make you not only THINK about where you are, but also to do the work of getting in touch with how you FEEL about success -- as you define it for yourself. She isn't on a soapbox. She writes using such great examples of people, and I'll bet they aren't out of her imagination, either. I'd recommend this book to just about anyone at any phase of their life, because life is about change and she wants to make this a bit easier for each of us. With me, she succeeded.

                Book Description

At Harvard, tenure decisions are a matter of life -- or death.

For Dennis Gossen, the economics department whiz kid currently being considered for tenure, it's definitely death. When he's turned down by the high-and-mighty Promotion and Tenure Committee, Gossen commits suicide.

                A Question of Cost Accounting...

Or does he? It's hard to imagine why a young man with a brilliant scholarly future -- at Harvard or not -- would come up with an equation in which the opportunity cost of killing himself (a high price, considering his potential earnings) would be outweighed by the emotional cost of failing to receive tenure.

                ... Or Utility?

Then two members of the P and T Committee are murdered, and it becomes clear to Professor Henry Spearman of the Economics Department that the killer must be on the committee. But which of his illustrious colleagues would have significantly increased his -- or her -- utility (i.e., happiness) by murdering a faculty member or two? Or three?

                Customer Reviews:

                4 out of 5 stars A fun mystery..........2007-06-07

If Milton Friedman liked it then hey - gotta argue with him right? :)

This is a great book. Its interesting and provides a lot of thought behind it. At the same time, its not challenging in any way. Thankfully, the book is explained well, the concepts are explained even better. Even if you don't understand basic economics concepts (which you should), the book will explain to you quite well in a very fun context.

It will leave you a bit curious and wanting a bit more at the end, yet the writer has weaven a great story with an economics setting. A bit dark and gloomy at times though.

I do wish there was more mystery at the end, but the novel is a very short read. I believe the writer didn't want to neccesarily bore the readers with too much economics. If you like mysteries, read this book! It'll give you a little thought and a lot of fun.

                3 out of 5 stars Economist fiction.......2001-07-17

Fatal Equilibrium reminded me of early science fiction (written by scientists about scientists for an audience of other scientists). This book is definitely written by an economist about economists. If you're part of that clique, it's a great book.

Not everyone will consider it light reading, though. If you don't have at least one econ class somewhere in your background, some significant parts of the book (and the plot) will go over your head. There were sections that felt like they were cut-and-pasted right from the author's lecture notes. I kept hoping that the book would be more like Larry Niven's work - grounded in theory, but first and foremost, a gripping story with compelling characters. I'd rather absorb my knowledge along the way than be lectured to.

I enjoyed it and I'll read it again.

4 out of 5 stars Good Mystery Novel w/ great apllication of economic concepts.......2001-05-26

Marshall Jevons collaborates both a great mystery novel while presenting economic applications that people face in the world. Henry's explanation on the ecnomics of love and romance can be seen as strange, interesting, but most of all, comical. I truly recommend this book for those who plan on taking economics in college or are interested in the field of study. My economics class at the University of Chicago read this book which many enjoyed. After completing the book, we were asked to analyze the economics this book contains at a "deeper" level. Humanities clashed with economics without causing any type of argument among literature and economics majors.

4 out of 5 stars A fun and educational read.......2001-01-04

I read this book as part of a study on how detective fiction mirrors society. The class was taught by Prof. William Breit at Trinity University, one of the co-authors of the book. Being an Econ major myself, I found this book's novel approach to blending economic concepts with a murder mystery to be unique and entertaining. Not your typical mystery novel, but one worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Econ in a mysteriously potable format.......2000-11-02

This book was assigned to me for my Econ 201 class at UVa (virginia), and lo and behold, the author's real name is the professor for this class. Would this mean that one could say he is manipulating the market, and causing an immediate surge in demand during the otherwise weak sales-periods? Or is he simply using his power to dictate the syllabus to earn royalties? Cynicism aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I am a big fan of economics, and felt it was intriguing enough to read. The book manages to deftly intertwine many econ concepts and definitions throughout it, which is always useful for the beginning economist.

Almost every business, large and small, is clamoring to get on the Web. Some do so with far more grace and effectiveness than others. This book helps you devise an effective Web commerce strategy. You're told how to prepare your company to handle online sales, the kind of contents that attracts customers, what security considerations are most important, and how to keep customers coming back. Special emphasis is on Windows NT-based servers. Among the author's clients are CBS, Microsoft, Fox and the New York Times. A book like this can help make the difference between a rush to the Web, and a thoughtful -- and effective -- Web site that maintains its value.

This book isn't about Internet commerce, it's about building a case for the use of Net.Genesis products. Ironically, most of these products have been canned since the book went into print.

This book misses many important points about Internet commerce such as credit card verification and clearing, secure storage of customer info, etc. About the only point that they hit related to commerce is SSL and certificates. It also only focuses on the use of Windows NT as a server platform.

The only reason I didn't return this book is that it does contain detailed information on three of the leading Web server software packages for Windows NT, Netscape Commerce Server, Microsoft IIS, and O'Reilly Website.

                                      Book Description

What exactly is the basis for the Catholic Churchs belief in the role of the Pope What does the Catholic Church mean when it teaches that the Pope is Christs Vicar on earth And what does this teaching mean for Christians of other faith traditions Robert Stackpole STD addresses thoughtprovoking questions in his book St. Peter Lives in Rome which has been rereleased in this expanded and revised edition. Dr. Stackpole presents new evidence of support from the early Christian era for the papacy and even includes a timeline entitled Important Dates in the Early Story of the Petrine Primacy. Readers will be fascinated by this study that clears away misunderstandings about the papacy and clarifies its foundations in Scripture and early Church history.

2 out of 5 stars Very poor effort , Mark!.......2005-07-26

I had Mark's first book; it was a good program; so I ordered this thinking he had some new stuff added since it was 10 years from the last book. WRONG! This is a disappointing waste of money and time. First, no illustrations of the excercises since I forgot what some were( and he gives them crazy names too) , secondly, he just devotes a couple of paragraphs to "rah, rah you can do it" philosophy and nutrition. The book ends up being book of charts to check off as you go thru his "program". Then he pitches some supplements he obviously owns thru a company. Very disappointing...not up to the SEAL creed of performance I say.And he doesn't include swimming in the program. Do yourself a favor..don't waste you money. If you are famaliar with the pyramid method of working out, do that and increase the reps as you need too.

Very good book and worth buying. You may want to buy two because I use mine like a log book and its a 12 week program. Its a tweleve week program broken down to begginer, intermediate, and advance so all will like it. I highly recommend any of Mark DeLisle books as great buys.
All of his workouts are designed to give like he states a "triathlete" body profile, not a bodybuilder profile. If your looking for practical fitness this is the place to start.
