1 out of 5 stars Awful book, awful idea.......2007-02-05

I hated this book. I kept reading, hoping to have that "aha" moment where I finally put all the pieces together... but there was not one. I did not think there was anything remarkable about Alison, and I never really liked her. She was wishy-washy, spineless, and settled way too many times during the story. I felt so sorry for every character in the book.... except for Alison's friends.. Nola and Jess - who were poorly developed. I found myself flipping back pages/chapters to see if I'd missed something about these random people. The middle part of the story dragged on and on.... and then in a matter of one or two chapters.. everything was resolved ... but I still felt unresolved since the resolutions were so weak.

2 out of 5 stars Great story - poorly developed..........2006-10-22

I ordered HOW I STOLE HER HUSBAND after reading all the positive reviews here and thought I would get get a fun breezy romance type novel much like you can find it in any one of Jackie Collins books. Reading it was very disappointing and rater boring and I'll explain why:

The main character Alison takes a job as nanny for Peppers 3 year old daughter August, which is lengthly drawn out over 100 pages including all the likes and dislikes of this job. Also we learn that Pepper seems to cheat on her husband Spence.

Spence, which we know has been Alison's High School Sweetheart, is on a business trip to Hong Kong, and noticeable absent the majority of the time, even Alison states on page 104 "I had begun to think of Spence as just an occasional talking point, not really part of the household". Maybe I was wrong to begin with but I thought the romance between Alison and Spence was supposed to be the major plot line.

When he finally appears, he Alison and August go together to a restaurant the used to go back in High School talking about old times, still no romance building up yet.

Then the whole clan moves to New York, we learn that Pepper has another affair there; Alison, Spence and August go to central park together and one evening they go out to dinner without August and start kissing each other after that. A few days later Alison moves into Spence's hotel room, and a week after that she decides to leave him after finding out he had had an affair with the prior nanny too. Within a few days later than that she starts a new relationship with this guy Finn she knew.

This book is more a run down of events than any kind of a romantic story, everything just seems to happen for no reason, I miss the gradual growing attraction between Alison and Spence. For me that makes this book a major disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing spectacular but good!.......2006-08-10

The characters in this novel are what I think makes this book a success. The antics and personality of Pepper were completely atrocious and you really just began to feel hatred for her while reading. I kept waiting for Alison to stand up for herself and just totally tell her off and was disappointed that she was more like a doormat but at the end, she comes through and delivers. I'm glad things turned out the way they did at the end. I will definitely check out the authors other novels.

5 out of 5 stars Cute, Fun, Quirky - Entertaining!.......2006-07-22

I found the characters to be so life like - it made the novel even more entertaining. You just want Alison to be happy and wake up and smell the coffee. Everyone in high school had that one girl that made them feel inadequate and in this book that is Pepper. What a likey name for a stuck up princess. I really liked the book!

5 out of 5 stars An Unabashed Fan.......2006-05-24

I've loved Liz Ireland for years. The characters in this novel are completely believable to me, especially Pepper (the villainess). And I found Alison to be adorable. This book and Charmed I'm Sure are my favorites by this author, whose new books I never miss out on.

Bruce Alexander's books have the same addictive attention to detail as Patrick O'Brian's stories about the British navy. In fact, there really was a Sir John Fielding (1721-1780; would the Library of Congress lie?), the blind London magistrate so energetically restored to life by Alexander. And as he did in Person or Persons Unknown, Murder in Grub Street, Blind Justice, and Watery Grave, the author lets us observe Fielding from the distance of time, with middle-aged narrator Jeremy Proctor recalling his adventures as a 16-year-old alongside him. Here Jeremy plays a larger part in the investigations than he did in previous books. The two cases-- the poisoning of Lord and Lady Langinham, and the unknown identity of a severed head found in the Thames--are separated by money and class. Among the hundreds of little moments that make the book glow is Jeremy ordering coffee in a seedy dive, and being told by the waitress, "You only get that with a flash of lightning here, dearie"--meaning a shot of gin. --Dick Adler

    Book Description

Riding high on the year's-best lists of the Chicago Tribune, Publishers Weekly, and The New York Times Book Review, the Fielding books have been proclaimed from the start as "wonderful, beautifully written, and altogether fun" (The Washington Post). Now the blind magistrate and his young assistant, Jeremy Proctor, face a baffling pair of deaths. A lord dies suddenly while attending a concert. A disembodied head washes up on the banks of the Thames. While investigating both, Sir John and Jeremy will learn a great deal more than they ever cared to about family, greed, deception..and the peculiar nature of homicide, high and low. Filled with the authentic sights and sounds of the era, this is in every way a worthy addition to a marvelous series.

4 out of 5 stars Gets better with each book........2007-02-27

The Sir John Fielding series, to my mind, gets better with each book. This is the fifth book in the series. The year is January 1771, and Fielding and his young charge are dealing with two murderers. Each is unique, but each is as deadly as the other. The book is also filled with rich period detail. I truly like the characters that are part of each book, but also the new ones introduced with each new story. Although neither murder is a real mystery, since Sir John knows who is guilty in both cases, he must gather the proof he needs to ensure that these people pay for their crimes and that is what is fun in this book. And Jeremy's love of adventure and lust for life help jolly the story along. This is a very strong historical series.

5 out of 5 stars Have enjoyed the entire series.......2006-05-11

I have enjoyed the entire series, am in the process of rereading most if not all the books. They stirred a desire to learn more of that time in history. Would highly recommend these books to anyone who loves old England, in a "family" type setting. Bruce makes you feel you are there with them setting at the table, or setting in the courtroom with the "Blind Beak". Extremely sorry when I found out Bruce Alexander had passed away. Keep hoping they will find another unfinished volume. Have found nothing that can begin to compare with this series.

    5 out of 5 stars tightly written.......2005-09-07

I enjoyed this book the most and have read five in the series. This one seemed tighter. It had several plot lines, but they all moved. I was never bored while reading the book. The new characters (and some of them were characters) were very well drawn, and the plots moved quickly. Alexander set a high bar with this book for me.

    5 out of 5 stars A charming historical novel.......2005-07-20

I've enjoyed all the Sir John Fielding novels I've read to date, but felt this was one of the best ones. Alexander's plot held me till the end and I find all his characters quite engaging. This series lacks some of the blood and gore that other mystery writers give us; they are in the tradition of the the older British mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the first five in the series.......2004-11-30

These stories are well written and very interesting reading. Slow at times, but with fairly intricate plots. The glimpse into many aspects of 18th century London, its high life and its low life, is what makes them so interesting. I have read the first 5 of this series and have to pronounce this one the best so far. An additional main character is added and the young protagonist's character is being developed well. In spite of this being the longest of the stories thus far, the story line in this one hangs together a little better than in the others.

Some reviews of this story are surprisingly down on it, which I attribute to expectations. If you want a fast paced thriller mystery or a surprise ending, or if you think teenage main characters are only for kid's stories, then I can see why. This series won't meet those expectations.

          Book Description

From the prelude of the October 1973 Middle East war through the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty in March 1979, Kenneth W. Stein grippingly traces American involvement in the Arab-Israeli negotiations. He provides an extraordinary range of first-hand accounts, recollections and anecdotes from over eighty bureaucrats, diplomats and military leaders who participated in Arab-Israeli peace talks in the 1970's and since.

Since the official public record remains unavailable for reasons of national security, these interviews provide unequaled insight into the internal divisions, political intrigue and untold stories of the peace process. Charting the complex and often contradictory goals of Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Syria, the US and the USSR, Stein chronicles the evolution of these negotiations and analyzes the key roles of Sadat, Kissinger, Carter, and Begin. An introduction and epilogue place this period in context of Arab-Israeli history since 1948 and the current status of the peace process.

          5 out of 5 stars You haven't lived until you've read ELFQUEST.......2003-10-21

ELf Quest is not like anyother graphic novel I've read. It shows you a whole other world of elves no one knew existed. Yeah, it sounds really lame, but trust me. Its more then a farytale about elves, trolls and faeries. Its actually a lot more knowledgable. Trust me, your really missing out if you dont give this book a chance. ITS THE BEST

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding continuation of the classic EQ story..........2002-05-15

This is the second book in the series. Written in text form, it covers book 2 of the graphic art series. It is, if anything, even richer and better written than the first book in the text series. The book covers what happens to the Wolfrider elves after they settle down with the desert elves. After a traumatic encounter with stray humans, the Wolfrider chief decides to see if he can find other elves to unite them against what is clearly becoming a major problem -- human invasion of the elves' homes.

The idea is simple, but mythic. Covering much land, the questing elves run into not-so-hostile trolls and friendly humans of various sorts, forcing them to go against their grain in many ways. As usual, the writing is lush and descriptive, painting evocative pictures with words. Elves are more than capable of bigotry, false assumptions, and violence, as well as fear and hesitation. One elf has to confront his longstanding hatred of humans; another has to confront her terrible fear of the unknown. The conflicts set up in this novel are amazing to watch unfold.

Best of all, the novel stands on its own easily. It expands very much on what happened in the graphic novel, to the point that it doesn't feel like a novelization at all. I would suggest this book wholeheartedly both to people who don't own the graphic novels, and to those wishing to learn more about what happened in the graphic novels.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-03-14

The Quest Begins is another wonderfull book from elfquest. A Tale of Undying love and unjust hate fill this book. A great book for any Elfquest fan.

5 out of 5 stars the "Forbidden Grove" story... and more........1999-04-28

Arguably the best of the three Elfquest-based novels yet written, "The Quest Begins" includes all the plot material from issues 6-10 (collected in Book Two, "The Forbidden Grove") while effectively expanding the story, mainly by getting deeper into the emotions of the characters.

Those familiar with the series may want to know that the main improvement this novel provides is the extra insight into Leetah's mind, as she wrestles with the necessity - but also the danger - of leaving her home and heading into the great and mysterious forest, in order (possibly) to save Cutter's life. This is the element missing from the original story, which makes it whole.

5 out of 5 stars Final destruction at hand the divided elftribes must reunite.......1998-12-04

The persecuted elves cannot find any safehaven. The humans want their extinction. Cutter, brave young leader of the wolfrider-elves tries to find and unite all the elves of the World of Two Moons to avert the elves' final destruction.

these books (by Edmund J Bourne) don't miss a thing. I was never diagnosed with anxiety disorder, my md hadn't heard about those disorders, and he'd run out of tests to do, and ideas. So,sometime later, when I read this book, everything fell into place, and I could then know what i needed to get(a qualified behaviourist) which i did. I'm still agoraphobic, but won't be for much longer. It's just when your md doesn't know- it wastes alot of time. These books go past informing and cover everything you need to make a recovery.

5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive and Extremely Practical Guide.......2002-07-27

Dr. Bourne has an excellent track record for providing real help for real people, and this book is no exception. I always love it when a self-help author is willing to put his own story out there, and Dr. Bourne does so in a way that helps readers know that they are not alone with whatever degree or variety of anxiety that haunts them.

As a psychotherapist and author who also teaches about overcoming fear's control in our lives, I have tremendous respect for Dr. Bourne's well-thought out, thorough approach to the subject. He is not a "one technique fits all" kind of author, but instead offers a very complete catalog of options from which to choose.

Last, but not least, Healing Fear has something many self-help books don't have: humility. Dr. Bourne understands that cognitive/behavioral techniques are very powerful in the face of fear and anxieties, but he includes respectful and intelligent information about the value of medication and of spiritual practice. This is a book to which I never hesitate to refer a client, friend or family member.

5 out of 5 stars A complete and lasting recovery from Anxiety in one book.......2001-05-08

Although the title of my review may sound a little cliche and gaudy it is actually not far from the truth. Having read the excellent Anxiety and Phobia Workbooks and gaining immense insight from them, I was eager to read one more book from Edmund Bourne. This book is an excellent read/resource for a number of reasons. Bourne, himself has suffered from anxiety for over 30 years and in the first part of the book he shares his struggles with the reader which gives us a sense of connection with him. Healing Fear does have some similarities to his previous books but it has evolved and expanded. Bourne now believes that there are far more circumstances when medication may be appropriate and even necessary. Also, there is a section on herbs which are relatively new to western civilization in the treatmentment of anxiety. Something else that is different about this book is the second section which has some definite ties to spirituality. Developing Your Observing Self is one of the most powerful and meaningful chapters that I have ever read in any book. Additionally, the numerous forms of relaxation are discussed as well as finding meaning in life. There are undoubtable ties between these subjects and lasting recovery from anxiety. True recovery ofter requires a shift in the way we look at things and the pace at which we live our lives. Incorporating a certain amount of relaxation and thought calming in our everyday lives is in many cases very necessary to our complete and full recovery from anxiety. In the last chapter there is a list of things to do everyday to avoid an accumulation of stress and there is a complete appendix to the book filled with suggested readings that are inspiring. Healing Fear does just what the title says it does and you will not be disappointed with your purchase.
