2 out of 5 stars An Overall Disappointment.......2007-01-23

I have seen from reading a number of Donald Goines reviews on this site and from hearing the praises from others; that Donald Goines has a large number of fans. This book also appears to be one of his most popular ones. Unfortunately for me at least, I thought this book was not very interesting. The story telling was nothing spectular when it's all said and done.

The beginning of the novel had me completely wrapped up in the story. I was literally scared as Goines described the female character's descent into full-blown addiction. I had never been so emotionally disturbed by anything I've read as much as I was by this. But after that portion of the book, it became very boring and seemed like Goines tried to use a lot of shock value throughout the rest of the book; but lacked any commendable writing. The latter parts of the book describe very sick episodes, but the writing is near poor.

This was the second book I've read by Donald Goines, the first being Black Gangster, an even more boring book. I'm afraid I may be done reading anymore of his efforts.

5 out of 5 stars You never know!.......2007-01-11

This book was crazy!!! I couldnt put it down. If your from the streets you will easily relate to the book. Its a real look into the world of a true heroin addict. The moral of the story is dont even start.

2 out of 5 stars Kinda Grody.......2006-12-16

This book was a big hit in the drug treatment center where I teach. However, I could not get past the first chapter, as it was really graphic and upsetting, to me. Of course, I want my students to read, but I think I may have just been encouraging most of them to mentally relapse. I don't know what to think, but I won't be reading this book any time soon. Sorry!

5 out of 5 stars The final scene is the deepest experience I have ever had in a book........2006-06-10

Donald Goines is one of my favorite authors of all time. The brotha knows how to bring reality to a novel. I have read all 16 of his books and his biography by Eddie Stone. All of the books were very real, but Dopefiend is the hardest book I have ever read in my life. The first few chapters are harder than any book I have ever read. The book keeps the pressure on and just when you think it can't get any deeper, comes that ending scene where the young woman walks into her friend's (the hooker) room. I would love to see this book made into a movie but unfortunately they would rape it. This is one of those books that is too hard for the big screen. And they would never do that ending scene not in a million years. I had all of his books but these books are meant to be shared and I have lent them all out and never got them back. I will be building up my collection for my soon who is six months old now.
Finally this book should be required reading for so called drug preventative courses.
Does anyone know where to get the Daddy Cool Comic book?

      Book Description

As America slowly relaxed its moral codes in the postwar era, pulp novels offered an initiation into the previously hidden demimondes of sex and hedonistic excess. While their cover blurbs feigned shock and disgust, the lurid jackets reveled in illicit danger and excitement. Prominent in America’s gallery of evil were teenagers and drug addicts. Together, they threatened to overrun respectable society and drag the country into a pit of vice from which it would never emerge. Here’s a sampling of the most daring of these jackets—teen temptresses, lawless rock ‘n’ rollers, and crazed gangs hooked on dope and marijuana.

3 out of 5 stars Tempted to Mass Production?.......2006-12-14

These three short stories, as well as the next two collections of shorts, have a weird "Mass produced" feel about them, which is not attractive. Like Stout signed a contract with the book-of-the-month club and write these quickly in order to fulfill it.

"Bullet for One" is the best of the lot here. "Disguise for Murder" ranks just below it, but "The Gun With Wings" has some shameless cliches and hackneyed plot devices seen in 1951 pulp deteective fiction. Stout was, obviously, capable of so much more.

In a real way, it's understandable why none of these was picked for A&E.

3 out of 5 stars In Wolfe short stories, it's the mystery not the characters that matter.......2005-10-10

When Wolfe appears in Stout's short fiction, the emphasis is on the mystery, not the characters. That usually works to the detriment of a series like this one where the byplay between Nero and Archie is the real reason for this series success; however, the stories in this collection are at least interesting diversions, if not as satisfying as the novels.
"The Gun with Wings" is a "locked room" mystery with a rather familiar "Gideon Fell" feel to it; and "Bullet for One" has more than its fair share of annoying characters, a fairly forgettable plot, but is slightly redeemed by memorable scene in an office where a Marx Brothers style romp occurs with Archie as a bemused bystander.
The winner here is "Disguise for Murder" which proves to be a lot of fun. Wolfe's aversion to disturbance in his household is overshadowed by his love of showing off his orchids. This proves to be a huge problem as murder occurs in his office, and then the unthinkable happens: Inspector Cramer shuts down Wolfe's sanctuary as a crime scene. Wolfe in high dudgeon is always a treat and the added attraction of Archie in jeopardy ranks this with the best of the Wolfe tales. One classic and two also rans make this a acceptable deal and CURTAINS FOR THREE with your time.

5 out of 5 stars The victims: an opera singer, a designer, and a con artist.......2002-02-25

One (so far) of the 3 short stories herein has been adapted by A&E. Apart from the introduction by Judith Kelman added to the paperback edition, the book is pure Stout.

"The Gun with Wings" - Alberto Mion, top tenor at the Met, had several reasons to die, whether suicide or murder. His alleged seduction of Clara James provoked her father into hitting Mion in the throat so hard that he needed an operation even to hope to sing again. He'd lost thousands of dollars in recording contracts and tours even in four months out of action. His wife wanted to leave him for Fred Weppler, the Gazette's music critic. But the police crossed it off as suicide, finding the gun on the floor beside him and a bullet through the roof of his mouth.

But Peggy Mion and Fred Weppler still have a problem: they know the gun wasn't beside the body when they found it, and they want Wolfe to find the murderer so they can stop suspecting each other.

Some high points: an attitude toward suing for damages that's an historical exhibit; Wolfe's all-time record in high-handedness in squeezing information out of clients; and a completely fair puzzle.

"Bullet for One" - Sigmund Keyes took a ride in the park 5 days a week. On the day of his death, he left the stable at 0630, passed a mounted cop at 0710 who knew him and his horse by sight, but his horse came in riderless half an hour later. A wealthy industrial designer, shot out of the saddle in sight of the Empire State Building, means a tailor-made media circus. Of the 6 suspects, 5 have now come to Wolfe, at least 4 ganging up on the 6th (who appears just after Wolfe, err, 'asks' them to stay to dinner for a grilling session afterwards). "I am hired to get facts." "Sure, the real facts." "There is no other kind. I guarantee not to deliver any unreal facts."

The suspects: Ferdinand Pohl (financed Keyes' start) and Dorothy Keyes (daughter), who inherit; Frank Broadyke (competitor; defendant in a lawsuit just begun by the victim for industrial espionage); Annie "Audrey" Rooney (just-fired secretary of Victor Talbott); Wayne Safford (courting Audrey, works at the stable); and Victor Talbott (Dorothy's fiance, the preferred murderer of the other four).

To balance the dry timetables of the murder and the six alibis, we have lots of catfights between the clients, Cramer going ape because Wolfe's messing around with a high-profile case, and a smart-aleck mounted patrolman who can compete with Archie.

"Disguise for Murder" - I recommend the excellent adaptation by A&E with Timothy Hutton as Archie. Wolfe has opened the plant rooms for the afternoon to the Manhattan Flower Club, but neither he nor Archie realized how troublesome it would be. Wolfe hadn't realized there would be (gasp!) *women* in the club, and Archie hadn't realized how few would be a treat for the eyes. Archie, therefore, was bound to notice Cynthia Brown, virtually the only attractive young woman in the place, even if she hadn't gone down to Wolfe's office to speak with Archie when he went AWOL.

Cynthia is a woman of many names - a con artist, in fact. Today, though, she wants to give it all up and go legit - because she just recognized the man she believes strangled her friend Doris Hatten a few months ago. "I wouldn't have recognized him if he hadn't had a hat on, and then he looked at me and saw what was happening." She wants Wolfe and Archie to help her put the creep away, without winding up in jail herself. Unfortunately, disaster strikes before Archie can get Wolfe downstairs to speak with her.

And to add injury to the insult of a murder in the office, Cramer seals it. Client or no client, Wolfe is motivated. :)

          5 out of 5 stars Hugely Entertaining.......2001-10-09

PROS: Excellent writing style, well-defined characters, captivating plots
          CONS: Not a single complaint!
BOTTOM LINE: Always a great read with Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: 3 bite-size murder mysteries.

Curtains for Three is a trios of murder mysteries starring Nero Wolfe, a 300 pound master sleuth with a penchant for food, beer and flowers. He solves crimes from his 1940's New York brownstone apartment with his wisecracking right-hand man, Archie Goodwin, doing the legwork. And as always, Wolfe's apartment staff and other regulars (Fritz Brenner the chef, Freelancer Saul Panzer, Police Inspector Cramer, Officer Purley Stebbins) are on-hand to round out the cast.

All of the Nero Wolfe books showcase Rex Stout's unique talent as a writer. The way he describes things is always interesting and adds to the atmosphere of the stories. For example, at one point in this novel he describes a resistant witness as `next-door to nasty'. In another novel Archie describes how he `retired to the kitchen to chin with Fritz'.

The three short stories presented in Curtains for Three are very enjoyable and just plain fun to read. The first story involves 2 lovers who call upon Wolfe to prove neither of them is a murderer. The second story involves a Central Park killing of a man on horseback. The final story tells the tale of a murder that occurs right in Nero Wolfe's office, which is real convenient since Wolfe tends stay within his apartment.

The characters are a hoot, the plot interesting and twisty and the prose is outstanding. Wolfe cooks up a good mystery every time and will have you going back for seconds.

4 out of 5 stars Omnibus: ENTER A MURDERER, OPENING NIGHT, KILLER DOLPHIN.......2005-12-29

CURTAIN CALLS is an omnibus edition of Marsh's first three novel-length "theatrical" mysteries, in which a theatre is the setting of a murder, and the cast and crew of the current production are the principal suspects.

While the selection criteria are understandable (the first three Alleyn novels mixed up with stage plays, why *not* put them together?), and the stories taken individually are OK, a somewhat different mix of stories would have made the omnibus a stronger collection. It's a bit surprising, given Marsh's reputation for such mysteries, that her first three novels of this kind were written at fifteen year intervals. Her abilities as a writer improved a great deal after her earliest novels (which is saying something), so the quality of the stories in this collection and the style in which they're told isn't consistent.

I'll discuss how the stories fit together and into the larger series, while leaving in depth reviews of each to their appearances as individual books. They take place in three different theatres, all major playhouses in Alleyn's London (the Unicorn, the Vulcan, and the Dolphin), and each centers around the production of a newly-written play in which it's often difficult to tell when the actors are properly wearing the masks of their roles on stage, and when they're letting their personal relationships with each other show through.

ENTER A MURDERER (1935) was only the second Alleyn novel as well as Marsh's first foray in writing mysteries set in the world of the theatre, and it has what I consider weaknesses that the later books don't possess. Like the first Alleyn book, ENTER A MURDERER features Alleyn's civilian friend Nigel Bathgate - a newspaper reporter, and not even dedicated to crime reporting - as Alleyn's would-be unofficial sidekick and her way of letting us into the investigation without using the principal investigator as the viewpoint character. This is a device that Marsh abandoned in later books; it's awkward to justify why Bathgate is allowed as much license as Alleyn lets him have after the final performance of "The Rat and the Beaver", to which Bathgate invited Alleyn as his guest, Bathgate having acquired two free tickets from one of the cast while his girlfriend was away. Bathgate's amateur sleuth instincts are quickly swamped by his loyalty to his old friend from Cambridge, who winds up in the unenviable position of shooting a fellow actor on stage with what turns out to be live ammunition.

ENTER A MURDERER would work better in a collection that contained other very early Alleyn stories told in a more similar style rather than the later, stronger novels that accompany it here; Bathgate's personal involvement with one of the principal suspects interferes with the work of ferreting out truth as much as the actors' personal rivalries seem to colour their conflicts on stage. Both Bathgate as reporter and Alleyn as official investigator strike me as unprofessional at various points in the story, due to various bits of business designed to give Bathgate's character enough access to the details of the investigation to let him serve as the reader's eyes and ears.

While ENTER A MURDERER is OK though somewhat melodramatic as a story, replacing it either LIGHT THICKENS (Marsh's last novel, a sequel to KILLER DOLPHIN) or with the short story to which NIGHT AT THE VULCAN is a sequel would've made CURTAIN CALLS a stronger collection.

NIGHT AT THE VULCAN (1951, also known as OPENING NIGHT) has some similar elements to ENTER A MURDERER, but in terms of setting rather than plot: here again, someone who "dies" in a play during its first week of performance - here, the opening night - dies in real life, though here the victim's death occurs offstage as a special effect and in a different manner from that actually used in the killing. Here again, the conflicts played out on stage have several real-life counterparts among the cast, although in NIGHT AT THE VULCAN they can be very subtle and ironic. Alleyn's personal life is not a factor; the investigation is professional and is completed on the same night as the murder, and the love interests in the story are restricted to the members of the cast and crew.

KILLER DOLPHIN (1966, also known as DEATH AT THE DOLPHIN, *not* to be confused with HAND IN GLOVE), like NIGHT AT THE VULCAN, involves a theatre undergoing a transformation of its public image, but unlike the Vulcan (which had been the scene of a previous notorious murder), the Dolphin is a once-beautiful Victorian theatre that's been allowed to physically disintegrate. Peregrine Jay, a playwright with dreams of restoring the old theatre, almost gets himself killed by accident while wandering over the dilapidated building - only to be rescued by Mr. Conducis, the building's owner, who goes still further in helping Peregrine to not only bring the Dolphin back to life, but to open it with one of Peregrine's plays - a play inspired by another possession of Conducis', a glove that once belonged to Shakespeare's son, who died as a child. To Conducis, that is, it's just another possession, to be sold to the highest bidder, but others see it as a national treasure that should never leave the country at any price. DEATH AT THE DOLPHIN delves still further into the play-within-a-play style of storytelling, as we see Peregrine's efforts to write and put on the play, the play itself, and the passions and obsessions of the players and those behind the scenes concerned with historical relics. Very well told story, which was followed years later by LIGHT THICKENS, which involves several of the same people in another play.

One should never complain about cleverness and depth, there being so little of both in our life, so I feel rather silly and wan doing so about this book.

Ms Duane has poured tons of both into the third book of her justly celebrated series, creating a charming world, similar and yet very different from our own in its basic structure. In her own Utopia the main good in life is love, a love which makes the earth bear fruits and people live and work in harmony.
This world is ruled by a supreme goddess who is nearly allmighty but not really all-knowing and she is responsible, in a way, for the extant evil too.
The one above is a rather brutal sketch of a rather refined and complex system of thought, which can compare with that of the ancient Greek philosophers in depth, scope and attitude.

Problem is, this is no philosophical treaty but a novel, and a fantasy one to that.
Characters are interesting if not always consistent and there are many very well knit passages: the overall impression unfortunately is that of some impressive tableaux vivants clumsily linked in a dull way, the plot being very slow and sometimes even dragging.

A book undoubtedly worth reading, last but not least for a social depiction where sexuality and human bonds are as free as one can conceive them, their worth established by the lovers' capabilities and understanding and not by their gender.

5 out of 5 stars The White Lion Awakes.......2003-09-05

The Door Into Sunset (1993) is the third novel in the Tale of Five series, following The Door Into Shadow. In the previous volume, Segnbora loses her sword Charriselm within Glasscastle, but, in return, gains Skadhwe, the shadow blade of Queen Efmaer. Herewiss and Segnbora close Barachael Pass by dropping a mountain on it and then Eftgan and Freelorn shore up the failing Bonds at Bluepeak to hold back the Shadow. There, too, Segnbora finds her Flame, kills all the Fyrds, returns all Reavers and Darthenes to their homes, heals Freelorn's wound, and provides Hasai with a body.

In this novel, Freelorn dreams true about his father and thus returns to Arlen alone from the south. Herewiss and Moris travel to Prydon, the capital of Arlen, as messengers for Queen Eftgan, carrying a declaration of war and showing Herewiss with the Flame. Segnbora and Hasai travel to the dragons to request their assistance. Eftgan and her levies travel to Prydon a short time later to make war.

Freelorn begins to sense the land as he travels through southern Arlen in the disguise of a tinker. He finds mercenary soldiers everywhere, mostly well behaved, but oppressing the countrymen merely by their presence. He also finds a daughter who had been reported as dead and he continues to dream of the white beast.

Herewiss is wined and dined in Prydon, not to mentioned poisoned and attacked in the Lionhall by a keplian. Intrigue is everywhere and very few of the 400 can be trusted, but somehow Herewiss is beginning to trust Cillmod, usurper of the throne. Moreover, the power behind the throne seems to be Rian, a sorcerer who does not believe in the Goddess but instead follows the Shadow.

Segnbora and Hasai meet numerous other dragons, establish Segnbora's claim to dragonhood, and gain admittance to the Dweller, chief among the dragons. However, gaining assistance within the current century is beginning to look problematical.

This novel takes the battle to Arlen. If Freelorn wins the throne, he and Eftgan can fully repair the Bonds. Otherwise, the Shadow wins everything.

In regard to the mass wedding, keep in mind that most of the main characters have known Eftgan for many years and all have fought together and like each other. Since sharing is a social grace, a group marriage would seem to be a logical extension of the Goddess philosophy and, indeed, is shown earlier in the story. Moreover, this marriage is not just personal but also political, joining the rulers of Arlen and Darthen, as well as Brightwood. Thus, it stabilizes the succession, brings the two countries even closer together, and adds a reason for mutual celebration after a hard and bitter time.

Highly recommended for Duane fans and anyone else who enjoys tales of sword and sorcery with great characters and devious machinations.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books in the world.......2003-04-27

Just fantastic. I couldn't think of anything better. A fantastically drawn world, with magical laws as real as our laws of physics. The characters are so real they take your breath away, and Duane just makes you rethink everything you once held true about life. Absolutely amazing. I can't wait for the next one.

3 out of 5 stars loved the first two, this one is not nearly as good.......2003-03-11

good reason for being out of print -- Diane Duane seems to have run out of steam for this third book, I guess when she went back to the characters after 10 yrs, the characters nuances slip away. And while the last battle scene was gripping, the many chapters preceding it lacked subtance. Reminds me of the wheel of time series which suffers from a lack of plot, but atleast since he writes a book a year, Robert Jordan writes about the same characters, who stay in character...
OK, I thought that Freelorn and Herewiss had an incredible and believable romantic relationship through the first two books and most of this one. I could even understand, and believe in Sunspark & Herewiss, and understand Freelorn's desire to complete this triangle with Sunspark but to just throw in a mass wedding and bring Segnbora, and a bunch of others randomly into their real and intimate relationship totally ruins the authors whole beautifully developed alternate "loved" universe. While other reviewers talk about being broad minded while reading it -- I couldn't understand why such a broad mind was needed until the last chapter of this book. The lack of rhyme or reason, leaves you will a feeling that all of the characters are farcical and that there is no depth to their feelings! I guess she wanted to make a point about universal love and parallel polygamy, but the development of the story did not support that.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through this book and the advice that Matt supplies is extremely eye opening. I never knew drinking during your workout was so important.

This book is written from a very down to earth point of view. I felt like a coach or a friend was giving me advice. After reading most of this book I went ahead and ordered both the EFS (formerly E3 as mentioned in the book) sports drink and the Ultragen recovery drink. I'm completely convinced by Matt's detailed explanations that these products are really targeted to maximize your body's needs.

Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who is an avid runner. It will help you understand how certain foods and nutrition can help your body as a runner.

Fitzgerald offers a good overview of various nutrients and their role in race performance. The short coming of this book is that it doesn't offer specific menu plans. Great title, just falls a little short of being truly helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for serious "amature" runners.......2007-01-18

I found this book a great asset to my running training. Matt Fitzgerald does a great job of explaining the reasons for the different enegy sources. He also tells how to get the proper amounts of protien from more that just meat sources. I'm only an "hobby" runner for fitness & health (to maintain a 100# wt loss) but this book made me feel like I could do more than I thought I could. I was hoping to cut 30-45 mins off my time. After reading and applying the info in this book I was able to fule myself for my 2nd marathon good enough to cut 58 minutes of my 1st marathon's time. I was able to run harder during the marathon (I had a faster 2nd half) & recovered better after it. It's easy to read & understand. I'm glad it's part of my fittness library.

                              5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-12-30

I found this book to be very useful in more ways than one. It was extremely helpful in educating me on the advantages and disadvantages of the different sports drinks and recovery formulas available to long distance runners. I also found that it motivated me to eat a healthier diet in general. While much of the general dietary information was stuff that I already knew, some of it was not.
I have significantly changed the way I eat as a result of reading the book, and I regularly recommend it to friends whether they run or not.
