Book Description
In the tomblike silence of an abandoned rock quarry someone is trying to hide their dirty little secret. A secret that reveals the depths of human depravity. A secret that is about to be discovered.
FBI Special Agent Maggie O'Dell is just starting a hard-earned vacation when she gets a call from her friend, psychologist Dr. Gwen Patterson. One of Gwen's patients is missing on a trip to Connecticut. Can Maggie look into Joan Begley's disappearance?
At first Maggie dismisses Gwen's concern. But when the body of a woman is discovered buried in an abandoned rock quarry in Connecticut, Maggie heads to the small town on "unofficial" business to see if there's a connection to Joan Begley. Soon the shocking news surfaces that more bodies have been discovered. And before she realizes it, Maggie is drawn into a case that confounds both local law enforcement and a seasoned criminal profiler like herself.
The question remains: Where is Joan Begley? Is she in fact the woman discovered buried in the quarry? Or is she the unwilling guest of a killer obsessed with possessing an unimaginable prize from his victims?

What is so special about Kava?.......2006-05-14
I've just read that title and wonder what do some people like in Kava's novels? A simple story? Gore? Melodrama? "She had a look at his strong legs and surprised she noticed that she liked them." (sorry, I'm not a native speaker and I read it translated to Polish, but that is a fine example of the author's "prose"). If you like other Kava's books you will probably like this one too, but if you didn't go for Thomas Harris, Dean Koontz or Jeffrey Deaver and other master story-tellers: one page of their prose is often more interesting than this entire novel.
Great Book Series.......2005-12-23
I really enjoyed reading the O'Dell series by Alex Kava. I can't wait until A Necessary Evil comes out. This is a great book, all of them are great reads. If you do read them make sure you read them in order: A Perfect Evil, Split Second, Soul Catcher, At The Stroke of Madness, and coming in February 2006 A Necessary Evil. These are page turning books that you just can't get tired of reading. They were so good, I read all four within a month!
Good beginning but fizzled out towards the end.......2005-11-27
Like her last book Soulcatcher, this book had an absolutely riveting opening scene (in fact it was reading this at the back of her last book that prompted me to buy it) but having written this Kava appears to think that she has done enough and the rest of the book never matches up to this high standard - the ending just seems to fizzle out and I was left thinking - is that it?
Isn't it about time Maggie was disciplined by her superiors for constantly disobeying common sense guidelines and putting innocent people's lives in danger? In this novel she excels herself by dashing off to rescue a victim from a serial killer taking with her only a mentally confused elderly man, a dead cellphone and NEVER once thinking of making a phone call even to let someone (such as the local sheriff) know where she is going? Never mind that everytime she does this she ends up incapitated, fighting for her own life and unable to do anything to help the victim. I know Kava thinks that Maggie's a free spirit but she's beginning to look more like a congenital idiot as these novels progress. On the plus side Maggie spends less time in angst ridden reflection about her dead father or some or other serial killer - which at least is something ...
Another fine Kava.......2005-05-19
At the Stroke of Madness by Alex Kava is the fourth Maggie O'Dell book. O'Dell, an FBI Special Agent, is just beginning her well-deserved vacation when a good friend, psychologist Dr. Gwen Patterson, asks O'Dell to look into the disappearance of one of her patients who has gone to Connecticut for her grandmother's funeral. Within a day, reports are coming in that the body of a woman has been discovered in an abandoned rock quarry in Connecticut, near the grandmother's hometown.
As O'Dell arrives in Connecticut, more bodies are being discovered in the quarry, and she becomes involved "unofficially" in the investigation of what may be one of the worst serial killing sprees in history. But is the first body found the woman for whom she seeks, or has something else happened to Gwen Patterson's patient?
Although not as intense as Kava's first three Maggie O'Dell books, At the Stroke of Madness is still a positive addition to this excellent series.
Missing a Bit of Spark.......2004-11-05
FBI profiler Maggie O'Dell travels to Connecticut when her friend, a psychiatrist, worries about a missing client. Bodies missing bits are discovered in barrels in an abandoned rock quarry. A good, fast read, bit missing a bit of spark. (A)

Book Description
The Chinese Lake Murders describes how Judge Dee solves three difficult cases in A.D. 666, shortly after he has been appointed magistrate of Han-yuan.
"[Robert van Gulik] deftly interweaves three criminal cases involving exotic yet universally recognizable characters, then has his Judge Dee provide a surprising yet most plausible solution."--New York Times Book Review
Robert Van Gulik (1910-67) was a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture. He drew his plots from the whole body of Chinese literature, especially from the popular detective novels that first appeared in the seventeenth century.
Customer Reviews:
a little more relaxed, please.......2005-11-25
'The Chinese Lake Murders' contains the usual threefold, high-quality, ingenious Judge Dee-plot. Unfortunately reading this book isn't that relaxed & comfortable as it should be.
I feel Robert Van Gulik puts in too much facts and too little narrative. The plot being somewhat pressed into its chapters, it allows the reader insufficient opportunity to digest its developments. I think this story could have been told better by using more words in a lower pace.
That really is a pity, for 'the Chinese Lake Murders' has the potential to rank among the best in the Judge Dee-series. Being one of his early novels, Robert Van Gulik clearly hadn't yet fully developped his writing-skills.
Wonderful! Suspenseful & Colorful........2001-09-11
I usually read mysteries set in the 20s-40s with a female heroine. I picked this up randomly and LOVED it! My copy is not the one shown here, but it is the 1960 version. My copy has illustrations of the town and the boat which were very helpful. This story taught me a lot about ancient China - fascinating - without being didactic at all! There were several mysteries wound into this one little book so there was plenty to keep you entertained. It was very suspenseful. I also learned some life lessons from Judge Dee. :)
Wonderful Entry in Judge Dee Series.......2001-05-18
The third novel in Robert Van Gulik's historical mystery series about a crime-solving Imperial District Magistrate in seventh-century China, sees Judge Dee transferred to the small town of Han-Yuan, along with his family and assistants - Sergeant Hoong, Ma Joong and Chiao Tai. Han-Yuan is only sixty miles from the imperial capital; however it is a small town cut off from most of the world as it surrounded by mountains. The town lies on the shore of a mountain lake which town locals whisper, holds mysterious, even supernatural forces. The novel opens with Judge Dee attending a banquet in his honor on a flower-boat - a floating house of prostitution. At the end of the evening, the judge discovers a famous local courtesan lying dead in the lake water! The suspects are many, since all of Han-Yuan's prominent citizens were attending the party and most of them had a plausible reason for wishing this courtesan dead. Judge Dee has to sort through confusing clues and his task is made more complicated by the sudden disappearance of a new bride and her husband, the violent death of a local carpenter and the suspicions that Han-Yuan may be a center for political unrest! The judge is able to sort through all the confusion and the realization that these multiple crimes are all inter-connected, with his usual blend of wisdom and sagacity. Judge Dee is a very interesting character and the novel itself paints a wonderfully evocative picture of ancient China with its complicated rituals of love and marriage and precise social order that governed everyone's life. The mystery itself is interesting, though perhaps a little too twisty; however, the ending is genuinely powerful and completely plausible. A must-read for fans of the series!
A brilliant way to learn about ancient China........1999-03-29
This is only my second Judge Dee mystery, and although I can't compare it to others by the same author, I am definitely hooked on the series. Robert van Gulik offers a unique avenue into thinking about Tang dynasty China (7th century A.D.) and serves up wonderful escapist fiction at the same time. Judge Dee is a conscientious and clever magistrate faced with the brutal murder of a beautiful courtesan who has complicated political and economic connections. As Judge Dee goes about solving the crime, we learn about pleasure boats, prostitution, what people wore (and didn't wear), insurgencies against the empire, and the necessity of a pot of hot tea whenever the going gets rough. The author was a Dutch diplomat and scholar of Chinese jurisprudence whose mysteries are tailor-made for the historically and culturally curious.

Book Description
In the third installment of Robert Van Gulik's classic ancient Chinese mystery series based on historical court records, magistrate, lawyer, and detective Judge Dee has his work cut out for him. Set in 666
A.D., in the hidden city of Han-yuan, sixty miles from the imperial capital of ancient China, Dee is sent to investigate a case of embezzlement of government funds. But things are about to get more complicated for the great detective. Just before he is about to take leave of Han-yuan, the popular courtesan Almond Blossom disappears, and then a bride who dies on her wedding night also disappears from her coffin -- her body replaced with that of a murdered man. To make matters worse, Judge Dee is confronted with the dangerous sect called the White Lotus.
Customer Reviews:
superb Asian-flavored mystery.......2005-06-05
Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE CHINESE LAKE MURDERS as by far the best among the four Judge Dee Chjines Murder Mysteries. This time Dee brings to book a gang involved in embezzlement of government funds. Side by side he also investigates the murder of a girl who dies on her wedding night.
Judge Dee-Jen Dijeh (630-700 A.D.) was a Magistrate known for his wisdom & wit in China, & his stories were a part of the local folklore. Robert Van Gulik, who had a historian's interest in China in the early 1950s, was fascinated by the tales of this judge, & finally collected & fictionalized them into four volumes.
The wit, ingenuity, & genius of Judge Dee is well reflected. Remember the old tales of King Solomon the Just -- well, give them an Asian flavor, a touch of Old China -- & you get Judge Dee.
All of Judge Dee's books are most pleasurable - - worthy of 10 stars!

weird new age stuff.......2003-07-08
Dossey's Holiday Folklore is interesting, then he digresses into weird New Age "think it and you can make it happen" stuff related to his experiences with people with phobias. If you skim those sections of the book, its ok, but I found it distracting.
HOLIDAYS FOR THE SUPERSTITIOUS AT HEART.......2001-04-27
This book blends holidays with FEELINGS. For some, it's not just loneliness they battle during the holidays, but actual dread.
We all fear something. But we all don't know what it's called. Well, this book not only informs you of how some of the origins start regarding some holidays, but also some of the legends and fears that go along with some of the traditions. I didn't agree with most of them, but I sure found them fun and interesting. It also explains why some of our ancestors were a bit well...odd? :) Holidays can be stressful for all of us. For those who have any kind of sensitivity, some holidays are just miserable.
I recommend this book for those who want more further depth into any holiday presentation they may be doing, or to help gain wisdom in dealing someone.

Splenda® Is It Safe Or Not? is a tool to protect your health from the hidden dangers of chemical sweeteners.
Customer Reviews:
This book is so ridiculous!!!.......2007-10-05
My husband was just diagnosed with diabetes and was sent to a dietician who put him on a very low carb diet and also told us to strictly use Splenda when making salad dressings, putting in ice tea, coffee and so on and so on.
The author of this book obviously doesn't know what she is talking about. If she had consulted a dietician on the subject of whether Splenda was safe or not, she would haven't written a book against it.
I am going by what our doctor and dietician recommends and not by some quack who writes just to make money!
Liberals are stupid.......2007-06-03
As Joseph Mitzen points out Hull is a charlatan and her "facts" have no validity or support in actual research or facts. Melanie Wilson "vegetarianbabydotcom" comments comparing "naturally occurring" versus "man made" chlorine demonstrate her idiocy. I'm guessing from her handle she is PETA liberal and an idiotic propagandist.
Kt99l.......2007-05-14
I think this book was informative and intresting, But on some issues took it to far such as Table Salt. I think the real epodimic in America is not Just sugar. It has to do with people eating enormous amounts of sugar and then eating a greasy burger with few veggies and a fast burning carb bun. And throw in greasy fries And a Coke on top of that every day or everyother day of the week. I don't trust chemical additives. I think sugar is safer in smaller amounts. Mcdonald in my understanding does not have anything on the menu that does not have sugar in it. In todays world people try to eat quick rather than eat right. That maybe good for now but when they have a massive heart attack they will slow down.
the sugar industry fights back..........2007-03-05
This book and others like it posit that in the case of Splenda, the government is colluding with big industry to put an unsafe product on the market to line the pockets of manufacturers and politicians. That may well be true but it's funny to say that and ignore what's obvious to anyone who's studied the ag industry in the US:
1) The sugar industry in the US is huge. It receives a subsidy that costs US taxpayers/consumers approximately $2 billion annually (see the Cato Institute report, "A Sweet Deal for the Sugar Industry"). This subsidy--like many of the other farm subsidies--was originally intended to help small farmers but now (acc. to the GAO) goes primarily to large, corporate farms. To make sure this subsidy stays sacrosanct, the sugar industry dolls out hefty sums of money every campaign cycle. (For a more detailed description of the sugar industry's campaign donations, visit the Open Secrets website.)
2) The sugar industry is taking a big hit as more people learn about the dangers of a high-sugar diet and the Splenda craze hits full swing
3) The sugar industry is fighting back with a PR blitz to improve its image with consumers (a la the tobacco industry and the oil companies) at the same time it is attacking the image of its competitors and fighting health experts: "In a legendary battle two years ago, the industry tried without success to stop the World Health Organization from recommending people consume no more than 10 percent of their daily calories from added sugars." (Quoted in the Sacramento Bee article from July '05).
4) Books like Dr. Hull's come out with scary but scientifically-questionable claims about sugar's chief competitor
I'm not questioning Dr. Hull's motives, just stating that it's worth taking everything in this debate with a grain of salt. Exceptions do exist, e.g. Ralph Nader, but for the most part these days it seems like everyone claiming to be the little guy fighting the big guy is actually being paid by the big guy's equally big competitor.
Sorry folks, Splenda is poison.......2007-03-04
Splenda was accidentally discovered by scientists trying to create a new kind of Insecticide. Yes, INSECTICIDE. I have not read this book, but I cannot stand back and listen to people claiming that this stuff is actually safe.
But don't take my word for it: read "Sweet Deception," by Joseph Mercola. It's all there, every last terrifying, infuriating detail. And no, I'm not Dr Mercola.
For those of you who insist on continuing to consume Splenda, as well as Nutrasweet/Aspartame, please at least have the decency to keep it out of the mouths of your children.
