What Follett Does Well.......2007-08-15
An incident buried in the past underlies the dynamics of a family's banking fortunes. One of my all-time favorite books was Follett's Pillars of the Earth, and what he did in Pillars, he also did with A Dangerous Fortune: define an era of history through the personal struggles of believable characters. Follett introduces a cast of privileged family, outcasts, renegades and mavericks whose lives intertwine with 19th Century England's financial futures. Honor, loves, shame, and villainy make page-turning intrigue to the very end.

I keep coming back to this book because of the connection between homophobia and crime which Follett develops in the relationships among Micky Mirnada, Augusta Pilaster (the family matriarch) and Edward Pilaster. I have always felt that Follett presents realistic characters, and this book is no exception.
Follett is also a master at portraying the era whenever he writes historical fiction, and Dangerous Fortune does not disappoint in this regard.
Dangerous Fortune is also a work I would call Economic Fiction and Follett does an excellent job of portraying the finacial and banking industries of Victorian England.

In the late-1980's as the Cold War was nearing its end (go, capitalism!) and the once red-hot market for espionage fiction was entering a downturn that is still in evidence today, British spy-thriller writer Ken Follett had the good luck to feel his muse taking his novels in another direction: toward the historical genre. First there was The Pillars of the Earth, an all-time great book set in Medieval England, and next came this one, an equally well-received if slightly lesser tale of dueling factions within a great banking house.
Set in mid-Victorian times in and around the financial district of the City of London, this novel begins with a questionably accidental and hauntingly consequential drowning at an exclusive public (aka boarding) school and wraps around a large cast of characters whose conflicting efforts to control the destiny of a great fortune make up Follett's storyline. The hero of A Dangerous Fortune is Hugh Pilaster, born into the "lesser" side of the Pilaster clan, nephew of the corrupt Augusta Pilaster, a woman who has grown used to her role as the true power behind the Pilaster family. By all rights Hugh's honesty, sharp intellect and enterprising nature should place him as logical choice to head the family bank after the death of the elder Pilaster who held that position for many years, but Augusta seeks to maintain her control by placing her own wastrel son in that role, and will use any means necessary to see that this happens, even if it means destroying Hugh and anyone else who stands in her way. Hugh also has a vulnerability Aunt Augusta is more than pleased to exploit. Hugh loves a young woman unacceptable to his social milieu and it is the subplotted tragedy of this love that cannot be that underpins Follett's commentary on the emotional suffocation Victorian morality often imposed on those who lived through it.
In its nearly 600 pages, A Dangerous Fortune introduces readers to murderous social climbers, fallen women, the privileged and lordly, and those who, though worthy of fullest recognition, dwell below the fullest heights of standing, owing to birth-status, religion, or gender. (Queen Victoria's was a flawed world of mandatory inequities and inescapable caste status.)
One thing that is satisfying about Ken Follett is his ability to make everything right as he wraps up a long book. With few exceptions, from The Eye of the Needle to his current works, in the end every character in his tales basically gets what he or she deserves. Although I won't give it away, I will note that nowhere in Follett's output has the ending to a despicable villain ever been more cringe-inducing or deserved than the awful fate he reserves here for one in particular.
A Dangerous Fortune is not a great novel, it's true, but it is a satisfying one that delivers the story it promises, and does not disappoint.

I have read a few of Folletts books now. Dangerous Fortune is not the worst Follett that I have read, but neither does it come close to supplanting "Pillars in the Earth" from what I would consider the best of his work.
The story here is about a banking family, the Pilasters, and a lifetime of events that stem from a drowning when all of the protagonists are children in school. The reason I am only giving this book three stars is that the entire arc of the story follows a predictable and weary plot line. Follett introduces his evil side of the family lorded over by the contemptable Augusta Pilaster and never gives the reader a single instance in which to understand their motives. Follett builds up Augusta, her son, and others as idiots and shallow and you know that they will bring ruin on the family somewhere down the line. On the other hand, Hugh Pilaster and his side of the family are set up as puritan saints. The whole book is very black and white, good and bad.
Other than the lack of other than a superficial development in the clash between sides of the family, Follett does not flesh out his characters very well. If you were to read a Russo book like Nobodies Fool and then were to pick up Dangerous Fortune the characters would relate to each other like the garden of Eden against the Mojave Desert.
I have been slaming this book pretty hard. I think that it deserves it too. Follett was sort of phoning this one in. I would not ever recomend it to anyone, though I would with his book 'Pillars...' All of that aside it was not a total disaster and managed to keep me entertained for quite a while. So you wont be unsatisfied with 'Fortune' if you are a Follett fan.

A RIVETING WORK OF FICTION..........2003-01-04
The author, a masterful storyteller, weaves an intriguing and mesmerizing tapestry of events that surround the wealthy Pilaster banking family in the latter part of nineteenth century England. Its panoramic sweep will hold the reader in its thrall. This complex story tells of the ebb and flow of their personal fortunes and the personalities that are to profoundly affect them, for better or worse.
Augusta Pilaster is the scheming, socially conscious, self-appointed matriarch of the family. She is a woman who will stop at nothing to ensure that her reckless and easily manipulated husband, Joseph, and their indolent, dissolute, and lackluster son, Edward, will get and retain control of the Pilaster banking enterprise. Her Machiavellian machinations, however, will eventually trigger the downfall of the family's fortune.
Hugh Pilaster, Augusta's nephew by marriage, is the Pilaster who has the brains and work ethic to take the Pilaster banking fortunes to a new level. His Achilles heel is that he seems destined to be attracted to working class women, a chink in his armor that Augusta Pilaster uses to her and her immediate family's advantage. He, too, is Augusta Pilaster's unwitting pawn, until the day of reckoning comes.
Micky Miranda is the romantically handsome scion of a South American despot. Micky attended an exclusive school with Edward and Hugh Pilaster, when they were young. While there, tragedy struck when a mysterious swimming accident took the lives of one of their friends, an event that was to shadow their lives in ways no one could have imagined. Micky Miranda would eventually enter into a web of complicity with Augusta Pilaster that would impact on the fortunes of both the Miranda and Pilaster families.
This book takes the reader through all strata of English society, from the drawing rooms of the upper classes and nobility to the exclusive men's clubs and brothels that cater to exotic appetites. It is a totally engrossing and absorbing tale of love, hatred, and treachery that spans three decades. It is a story that the reader will thoroughly enjoy, as it is a captivating and wholly entertaining, well-written work of fiction.

Piecing Together the Shards.......2007-09-01
As Miss Marple has always said, small villages allow one to observe all the possible sides of human nature. Such is the case in Miss Marple's small village of St. Mary Mead, when film star Marina Gregg and her husband buy an old mansion, hoping for a peaceful life. Yet when a poisioning occurs during a party at the mansion, all thoughts of a peaceful life are shattered.
Miss Marple herself is wishing for a more peaceful life, recovering from and illness and disliking the woman who has been sent to live with her. She soon becomes embroiled in the mysteries surrounding Marina Gregg, who is certain that the poison was meant for her. When more deaths occur among those who live in the mansion, Marina is desperate to leave, but must allow the police to carry out their investigation. But of course, Miss Marple makes the most of her idle time to research and piece together the reason why that first death had to occur, and finds the murderer in their midst.
"The Mirror Crack'd", which makes much of Tennyson's poem "The Lady of Shalott", is as quick-paced as all of Christie's mysteries. The wide cast of characters, with storylines that may seem superfluous at the beginning, all contribute to the mystery at hand. As usual, the twist of an ending that seems to be Christie's forte, is fitting and believable.

I read this book several years ago and remember the plot vividly, as though it was read yesterday.
This book kept me hooked from the back cover to the first chapter to even after the book had ended.
I was quite sad, though, to find Colonel Bantry, one of the characters from "The Body in the Library," dead.
Vintage Miss Marple.......2005-09-22
THE MIRROR CRACK'D finds the quaint village of St. Mary Mead undergoing changes. Besides the charming old village, there is now a supermarket and a modern neighborhood of tract homes. Despite the physical changes taking place in the area, however, human nature remains a constant.
Having taken up residence in the local manor house, movie star Marina Gregg hosts a cocktail party. When one of the neighbor ladies suddenly dies from poison, it appears the fatal concoction might have been meant for Marina.
Aside from Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple is probably my favorite fictional detective. Her quiet way of getting at the truth is always clever and insightful. She's a delightful character, and Christie can be relied on to create a fascinating plot. Despite the seemingly unconnected details, the clues are there if you can just decipher what they mean. The outcome always ties up the loose ends very satisfactorily.
If there's anything to criticize here, it's that our dear old Miss Marple has become so decrepit that she must have a somewhat annoying companion and, since she rarely gets out of her house, her actual presence in the story is more limited than usual. Christie relys on other characters for most of the legwork in this tale and they aren't quite as engaging as Jane Marple. We just don't get the usual clicking knitting needles to the extent that Miss Marple fans have become accustomed.
That minor criticism aside, this is another first-rate Christie whodunit. It isn't my favorite Miss Marple mystery, but it's pretty darn good just the same. If an entertaining muder mystery is what you seek, THE MIRROR CRACK'D will fill the bill. I recommend it highly.
Best murder motive ever.......2005-07-12
This book has the best murder motive of any mystery I've read. The characterizations are strong, and I like Miss Marple here as I always do, but it is the motive, as well as the ingenuity of the murder itself, that makes this book memorable. The motive isn't revealed until the end, and when I found out what it was, I was dazzled.
St. Mary Mead in the '60's & Christie in her prime.......2005-06-04
Life has begun to change in St. Mary Mead, or has it? A new housing development has brought many new faces to the sleepy little village along with a new supermarket. Gossington Hall (THE BODY IN THE LIBRARY) has been sold to a film star and many old friends have moved away or died. Miss Marple is beginning to feel her years and now must have live-in help (thoughtfully supplied by nephew Raymond West). Some things however, remain the same. The new arrivals have the same problems and flaws as the old with murder as the inevitable result. Although forbidden to garden and no longer as adept at knitting Jane Marple is still quite capable to ferreting out the solution when a young woman is killed in a failed attempt in the film star's life.
For Christie fans, particularly Miss Marple devotees this is a must read. It is nice to catch up on village life, visit with some old friends and meet some new ones. It is particularly comforting to see that Miss Marple is doing well and up to her old tricks of beating the police to the punch. Although this is part of a series this cozy mystery could be enjoyed by itself.
As always Christie has played fair with the reader, all the clues are presented for the reader to follow, there are no exotic poisons nor last minute surprise suspects (though there is a rather sneaky far fetched coincidence it is only a red herring).

My doctor recommended this book for me and I found it very helpful. The chapter on nutrition is lacking in my opinion (see Superfoods RX by Pratt.)I like the fact that there are many practical applications that are not "so far out there" that someone who is not into Eastern healing can still gain much from it.

I first used this book 10 years ago and was able to establish some healthful living goals and actions for myself that improved my physical conditioning immensely. I continue to use it today. What I really like about this book is that it enables each reader to really focus in on their individual lifestyles, needs, and habits and develop specific, realistic, and individualized action plans for improved and healthful living. The improved physical condition that I realized as a result of focusing on a plan and actions enabled me to climb mountains in the Sierra Nevada. I have also used techniques in this book to successfully address anxiety. This week I pulled the book off of my shelf and am going at it again. I am having fun with this exercise because I can compare my "10 loves" from 10 years ago to my "10 loves" of today and put a plan in place to realize them. Many thanks to the authors for such insightful and all emcompassing work. This book is as useful and current today as it was the day it was written.

Good book.......2007-08-01
I am a Master's Level clinician working on my doctorate in clinical psychology. This book is not as great as its 1985 predecessor. In that previous edition, there were more relaxation scripts that were excellent to use personally and with clients/patients. This edition acts more like a reference book as well as an advertisement for the author's website (which incidentally did not have much on it that was helpful for me). I did like some of the suggestions regarding the use of technology and how it can cause stress or reduce it by the way it is used.

First of all, this book is very reader-friendly. It doesn't torture you with medical wicky wacky jargons. At the same time, the author doesn't treat you like a baby. He gives it to you straight and clear.
The book talks about different types of relaxation techniques to unnerve your mind and body, gives the descriptions of major stressors in lives and how to handle them, etc...
This book is great read and actually practicing the skills that the author describes make it even better.

Stress reduction tips, assertiveness information, relaxation, guided imagery; this book is packed with excellent tips and information. Although written several years ago, I continue to use the information and to recommend this book again and again.

This is a superb and, as the book's subtitle implies, a comprehensive compendium of stress management tools and information. I have been using this book since the mid-80's, both to benefit me personally as well as to use as a basis for inservices I have provided for the staff I have supervised in a stressful hospital environment. It is quite logical in its format, proceeding from the tertiary to the secondary to the primary levels of prevention, in that order. It first shows the reader how to cope with sources of stress when they occur, first by regulating our physiological, then our cognitive responses to stressful events; this is the tertiary level. It then shows us how to take some control over our environment in order to lessen the frequency of stressful events occuring; this is the secondary level. Finally, it presents some ideas for general well-being, which could be called the primary level of prevention. It as much as says that if our minds and bodies are in the right place, then nothing will faze us. Overall a superb book that I cannot recommend too highly.

If you only read one book about stress, this isn't it. But it's good for the price and I learned quite a bit about myself...mostly stuff i didn't want to know!
