5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Work.......2005-10-27

Zelda Fitzgerald is perhaps one of the most interesting wives of a famous historical figure in history. Not only was Zelda a highly energetic, flirtatious woman, she was a ballerina, a writer, and an artist. Her art is perhaps the least known piece of her work and is presented here excellently.

Zelda's art is reflective of various styles, as the text acknowledges. Her undated work is hard to place because of this. Her work is reminiscent of Pablo Picasso, Georgia O'Keefe, and Miro in unison. It is also reflective of her life; Zelda painted gruesome dancers and mothers with children, and glorious cityscapes and flowers as well as strangely formed paper dolls and scenes from the Bible, fairy tales, and Alice and Wonderland.

It is too bad that much of Zelda's work does not survive due to being misplaced or destroyed both by Zelda and her family.

The writing analyzes Zelda's artwork quite well. There is text between the presentation of paintings, which seems awkward and yet well placed because the ending presents the painting that follow. The biography is objective and yet warm and biased as well as it was written by Zelda's grandchild.

Overall, this is a well made book that Zelda Fitzgerald fans must read.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Zelda fanatics and art lovers alike.......2004-06-18

This is a relatively new yet hard to find book, but once you've got it I promise it will hold a prestigious place on your bookshelf. The book is filled with high quality photos of every known piece of Zelda's artwork and sketches, plus a mini-bio of Zelda complete with pictures and words from Eleanor Lanahan, Zelda's granddaughter. For those who are interested in art, Zelda Fitzgerald's pieces are enthralling, bewitching and at some extreme viewpoints even repulsive, especially her depictions of ballerinas and of a mother nursing her child. Her work mostly deals in fairytales and religion, as well as various "slices of life" in between. For everyone who is interested in Zelda's life, this is a can't-miss piece to her puzzle that you must find and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Let the Story Take you there. .......2007-06-14

It is debateable whether or not Beryl's husband helped to write this story. He was a writer and must have inluenced her in some ways. However, there are books other than "The lives of Beryl Markham" that give insight to the depth of his inluences upon her writing and also present Beryl's opinion on this subject. In Beryl's "African Stories" compiled by a woman who interviewed Beryl it becomes clear that Raoul's writing style did not match the writing style of this book. Raoul focused on scandal and tried to write his own story about Beryl in which scandal played a large part to help make the book popular. In Beryl's opinion the scandals of her life were unimportant details. Horses and African life were her truths and the details surrounding these truths were what she wanted to convey to the world. She used artisitc liscence. One surely should be able to to use this skill if one is writing about ones own life. Stories are not required to be as reality shows are today. The book is not titled "West With The Night A True Story". It was not meant to be taken with a grain of salt. It was meant to immerse the reader, take them to a different place if you will and make them feel as though they lived it. Allow the book to be what it is, enjoy the fine writing and let it take you to where you may have never been before. Read further and discover more. It is a facinating mystery touched by so many factors many of which we may never know because the one person who could tell us whether or not she wrote the book is dead and gone.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful but often fictional account of a great life.......1999-05-17

I've recently read the "autobiography" "West With The Night" for a Hight School history class. While I found Markham's book to be a beautifuly spun story of growing up in colonial Kenya and life in the early 1900s, this book left me with more questions than answers. On digging deeper, I found that this book was written by her third husband, Raoul Schumacher. Also, I found that many interesting and scandalous parts of her life had been omitted from this historical tale. However, these things do not change the fact the "West With the Night" is a completly enrapturing tale of a very strong, determined woman. I only advise that you take this story with a grain of salt; and then go read the book "The lives of Beryl Markham" by Errol Trzebinski to get the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars A life-changing read-Even better than Out of Africa!.......1998-08-08

Beryl Markam's controversial "West with the Night" gives a vivid, personal view of life in colonial Kenya. A geat aviator and race horse trainer, Beryl Markham gives new life to women everywhere.

Book Description

Firmly established as one of the premier histories of women in the fine arts, Nancy G. Heller's Women Artists returns in an expanded fourth edition. Its lavish illustrations--all the artists' works are reproduced in large-format color--and documentary pictures of many of the artists make this one of the most accessible and useful studies of women in the arts. Dr. Heller's lively text provides an overview of the obstacles that women have encountered, emphasizing the ways that women artists have ingeniously circumvented them, inventing new forms and bringing a distinctive perspective to traditional subjects. With coverage of the 1990s and the beginning of the new millenium, nearly half the volume is now devoted to the remarkable period from 1960 to the present, when women artists emerged as the most dynamic force in contemporary art.

New to this edition are innovative U.S. figures including sculptor and performance artist Janine Antoni and photographer Renee Cox, as well as major international artists including Iran's Shirin Neshat, Shahzia Sikander from Pakistan, British painter Fiona Rae, and the Icelandic sculptor and performance artist Katrin Sigurdardottir.

Other details: 220 illustrations, 160 in full color

4 out of 5 stars Encyclopaedia of Women Artists.......2005-10-23

I wanted a encyclopaedia like of women artists and this comes close to it. It is not all inclusive but it has a good number of entries, including the well known ones and the not so well known. I wish it had had more international women artists. I like the fact that it had good color illustrations. I am glad it is included in my art library. It is a good bargain for the price. This is a reference book.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2000-06-29

This book is an excellent introduction to women artists throughtout the ages. I discovered some I had never heard of before and as a result bought other books to learn more. The only regrets I have is that it omitted some very interesting painters, like Tamara de Lempicka, and the section on contemporary artists was too heavy on US artists. Otherwise excellent with great illustrations.

                                Book Description

The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the
wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good—Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, "Don't hesitate to use these."

And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

                                5 out of 5 stars Beautiful! Touching!.......2007-09-29

John Grogan brings a great deal of heart to Marley's story. It reminds one of how precious pets can be and how these little ones share so much with us as life goes on.
It's a beautiful, touching, and vivid story, and you'll just fall in love with it.
Thanks, John, for sharing such a great tale :-)

                                5 out of 5 stars Marley & Me.......2007-09-23

A very Entertaining book, great read. This is a must book for all those that have a dog as a pet or all dog lovers, especially those of us that have had labs in our life. A laugh out loud cry out loud story.

3 out of 5 stars Light, easy reading.......2007-09-18

Open this book with the expectation of a light, easy read and you won't be disappointed. It rarely gets that deep, and why should it? The story is about a mischievous dog, afterall. Favorite scenes include the description of Marley's father: a half-demented, highly energized stud emerging from the forest covered in mud and burrs, his eyes looking like he just saw a ghost- and he liked what he saw! Another favorite scene involves the dog's response to the family's miscarriage. Animals do sense our grief on a very primal level, and the scene with Marley comforting the author's wife was moving.
This 3-star rating takes into the account the slight tedium of the book- scene after scene involvng a bad dog. It gets a little tiresome after a while. No plot, no challenging themes- just a bad dog. Yawn.
On a positive note: This is the age of yuppie dog control. The Dog Whisperer tells us that we must have total command of our canine subordinates. While the Dog Whisperer may be right, he is not always that fun. In contrast, Marley and Me is a fun story. I recommend it to all dog lovers like me, and all dogs like my bestfriend Sophie, who pees on the neighbors flowers and jumps the fence with regularity.
