When Jack Aubrey is unfairly deprived of his commission in the Royal Navy, Stephen Maturin comes to the rescue, purchasing the captain's former ship and outfitting it as a privateer, to be commanded by...Jack Aubrey. Soon the Surprise is off to sea, on a mission that Aubrey hopes will redeem his good name. The author's grasp of period detail is astonishing as ever--and so is his gift for pure entertainment.

Book Description

The time is the early 1800s, and the British Navy stands as the only bulwark against the militant fanaticism of Napoleonic France. Jack Aubrey, a brilliant and experienced officer, has been struck off the list of post-captains for a crime his has not committed. His old friend, Stephen Maturin, usually acting as the ship's surgeon to cover his activities on behalf of British intelligence, has bought for Aubrey his old ship, the Surprise, to command as a privateer. Together they sail on a desperate mission against the French, which, if successful, may redeem Aubrey from the private hell of his disgrace.

In this twelfth installment of the beloved Aubrey-Maturin series, Patrick O'Brian has created another tale of great narrative power.

5 out of 5 stars O'Brien as usual, now sailing as a privateer.......2007-09-24

After being deprived of his rank as post captain in "The reverse of the medal" Aubrey starts a new career as a "letter of marque" (private man-of-war) is started in this book. It's the characteristic seal of the series, it's a story of efforts and success, it enforces you to have read "The reverse", and to continue with "The thirteen -gun salute". If it will be your first book in the series it won't be the last. Save you don`t like this kinda book, then better don`t step through its board, and keep away of such a seizing.

5 out of 5 stars "The Letter of Marque" lifted to heights by explorations of character.......2007-06-05

It is a bit unfair of me to say that Patrick O'Brian's "The Letter of Marque" is a "character-driven" novel. Indeed, one of the many joys of O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series is his ability to sustain and develop such compelling characters over a long series ("LoM" is the twelfth book).

But while there is a fair amount of action in this novel, what distinguishes "LoM" is O'Brian's further exploration of his two heroes, Captain "Lucky Jack" Aubrey and Dr. Stephen Maturin.

The novel opens with Aubrey bereft after being unfairly stripped from the lists in the Royal Navy. Unfairly charged and convicted of a financial scheme in which he played an entirely unwitting part, Aubrey has had his lifeline to the Navy cut as harshly as with a boarding axe. Now this merry captain, who used to delight in dreadful puns and baroque music, has been reduced to a cold, frightening visage. Remote, distant, joyless, Aubrey is at his lowest ebb.

Thankfully, Aubrey's boon companion, Dr. Maturin, has a lifeline. Thanks to a prodigious inheritance, Maturin buys Aubrey's beloved H.M.S. Surprise and outfits her as a privateer - with the titular letter of marque. This letter essentially authorizes the Surprise to be a pirate for the British Navy. While this offers Aubrey a chance to go to sea in his favorite ship, this joy is tempered by the shame that is attached to the word "privateer" by the serving sailors of the Royal Navy. Aubrey feels this acutely.

But privateer or no, the command of the Surprise offers Aubrey the chance at redemption through a heroic action . . . possibly even reinstatement to the lists! And so Aubrey leads the Surprise into various actions, including a complicated night-time raid on a French-held port to steal a ship from under French noses. O'Brian writes these scenes as only he can.

But this novel is not only about Aubrey. Dr. Maturin continues to ply his intelligence trade. He also continues to struggle with his two demons - an addiction to opium and an addition to Diane Villiers, his estranged wife. Maturin has heard that Diane has fled to Sweden with the attractive Swedish colonel Jagiello after she heard (incorrectly) that Maturin was having an affair in Malta. And so Maturin heads north to confront her, and possibly Jagiello, with the truth.

All of these plots allow O'Brian to explore both Aubrey's and Maturin's characters in new ways. Aubrey has had his troubles before with the law, but those were always civil matters involving nothing more than unsavory characters. Here, Aubrey is confronted with shame for the first time. Maturin also must confront his own nature, for as a man of intellect and science, he is not proud to be addicted to either a drug or a woman. And yet he is.

"The Letter of Marque" may be the shortest of the Aubrey-Maturin novels so far, but there is a lot of meat on this small bone. Do not read this novel unless you have read those that come before - the characters won't make nearly as much sense. But you will be thankful once you get to this novel - it is well worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly my favorite so far........2007-05-21

Simply put, these books mostly get better and better as they go, and this one is probably my favorite of the lot (up through #14 at this point). Adversity strikes, and the boys are tested to the limit. Wonderful stuff from a spectacular writer.

5 out of 5 stars Fighting .......2007-01-16

Jack has been disgraced and treated badly by the system, so he does what anyone else would do, take ships for money. Patrick O'Brian puts you right into the minds of his curators like no other books I have read, I will have a hard time going back to read Tom Clancey and Clive Cussler, sorry guys. This is truly an action book, both on the sea and with politics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!.......2006-05-30

As I'm borrowing most of this series from the library, I'm reading them out of order (as they come in from interlibrary loan).

I can't say enough for this excellent series! I read through "The Letter of Marque" on a Memorial Day Weekend - couldn't put it down.

Huzzah for Patrick O'Brian!

Book Description

1856. In One Volume, Illustrated. George Coggeshall had a long and often adventurous seagoing career, during which he kept detailed journals. Upon his retirement he mined material from his journals and produced several books of seafaring memoirs. Of his writing style it has been said that Coggeshall wrote a clear, terse, seamanly English flavored with a dash of quiet elegance. His strength lies in his details.; his best writing, in fact, can stand comparison with the novels of Daniel Defoe. In this volume Coggeshall remembers the ships and commandeers that sailed from our ports during the war.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Flawed, but indispensable.......2004-11-26

On one hand, it is difficult to recommend a book so severely disorganized. Rather than addressing one topic, Coggeshall has randomly interspersed three in one book: a series of brief descriptions of American privateers in the War of 1812, a simple listing of prizes captured by same, and the personal experiences of the author as the captain of one of these vessels. If these three subjects did not deserve three separate books, it would have been an easier read to at least give each its own section, rather than try to blend them into a single narrative.

On the other hand, the book is by far the best narrative of the very important, though otherwise obscure, story of these privateers. I found more information on this subject in this one book than all my other resources combined. Even if Coggeshall is not an unbiased reporter on the subject, and did not avail himself of the services of a much needed editor, his book is an invaluable and indispensable resource to the serious student of the period.

1 out of 5 stars There is a good plot in there waiting to get out..........2007-03-23

This could have been a wonderful read. The elements are there: an intriguing setting, an interesting story, a variety of characters. But somewhere along the way the author lost her way. None of the characters is compelling or memorable, and their relationships to one another are seldom developed. Often, instead of dialogue, we get a lecture that could have been part of the forum rather than part of a conversation. The editing of this book was practically non-existent; a paragraph would be followed by a paragraph that was totally unrelated to what was going on in previous one. Lara's thinking-out-loud became a redundant summary of the plot so far. When the killer was revealed it was like "huh? who is that?" I read this for a book club, and almost all of us said we wouldn't have finished the book if we were reading it on our own. A major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars THE MOAI MURDERS.......2007-03-17

Once again we are flown away to one of the most mysterious and fascinating places in the world. This time, Ms. Hamilton's part time "Sherlock Holmes" and full time antique dealer, Lara McClintoch, is on a vacation...from everything except murder. I should have written murders. Follow her through a history lesson that is painless, entertaining, and incredibly informative and try to outguess her. Betcha you can't.

Reading Ms. Hamilton's books should qualify us for Master's Degrees in History and Archaeology. Reading these "impossible to put down" books certainly qualifies us for being extremely well entertained.

5 out of 5 stars absorbing amateur sleuth .......2005-04-06

Lara McClintoch, co-owner with her ex-husband Clive, of an upscale antiques store in Toronto, has been to some very exotic places but has never really gone on a vacation. Her best friend Moira Meller who is also Clive's girlfriend, convinces her to go on a real vacation to Easter Island also known as Ropa Nui. The island is famous for its Moai statues several feet high and facing inland several resting on a base known as an ahu.

Nobody knows who carved them or how they were made but the Ropa Nui Moai congress meet on the island and accept Moira and Lora as members. A native who has visions says that one of the group will die shortly on a specific spot. This actually happens but Lara sees evidence that the member was murdered not accidentally killed by a horse. When the star of the Congress, who made a very important find to back up his belief that the native language came from Chile, is murdered, the police are forced to act. The daughter of another group member lies in a coma and nobody knows why. Lora thinks that all these events are linked and she goes his extraordinary lengths to prove her theory and save the remaining members of the group.

After reading THE MOAI MURDERS, readers will have a definite picture in the mind's eye what Easter Island actually looks like, what the natives are like and who people want to vacation there. Lyn Hamilton has written a colorful, exciting and totally absorbing amateur sleuth novel that will be enjoyed by readers who like a complicated and complex who-done-it and armchair travelers.

                  Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars You must be kidding.......2005-02-24

This book has the distinction of being the worst Sci-Fi related novel I have ever read. It combines mediocre writing with a staggering number of cliches, even for a Star Trek novel. It is also a prime example of the early attempts to justify Troi's existence as something other than eye candy, and like most falls into the trap of trying to "prove her mettle" as an adventure heroine. She's an empath, and a counselor. Think the psychologist (Dr. Friedman) from M*A*S*H, not Xena, space-warrior princess.

The entire society of Rampart is unstable, and as presented could not possibly have existed for 200 years. The level of technology given to the Rampartians is inconsistent, both internally and with their alleged backstory.

The one-eyes are supposedly built with "post-Atomic" era technology, but have abilities that surpass those of the modern Federation, except for when they don't. They are capable of deep-scanning an unconscious mind in order to mine O'Brian's transporter knowledge, but can only read surface thoughts when Sharee wants to impress us with Shibiko's "Zen archery" approach to security. Even then, they react to "visual input" to dodge a beam that travels at lightspeed, showing Mr. Sharee understands physics less well than he understands Zen.

It is established early on that the one-eyes communicate using radio frequencies, and all communication planetside uses these same frequencies. It has long been established that Starfleet communicators do *not* use "primitive" radio frequencies. Yet, the one-eyes can jam all communicator frequencies, and can even jam transporter frequencies, an ability which has previously been established to be a function of *shield* technology, not communications. Furthermore, they can jam with sufficient power, using only a small internal power source, that a Starship cannot overpower the jamming, even with a tight point-to-point beam. That would make the power source in a one-eye at least equal, actually somewhat superior, in output to the main anti-matter engines of the Enterprise.

Furthermore, allthis adaptability and creativity is possessed by a computer constructed by a civilization that has banned imagination and creativity. This, by itself, completely undercuts the supposed central message of the book - that creativity and imagination are a necessary part of human intelligence. Instead of being stagnant, the Rampartians are sufficiently adaptable to seriously challenge the Enterprise when, by all rights, they should have been instantly overwhelmed.

The behaviors of the crew as a whole are incredibly inconsistent with the Star Trek Universe background. As a lsot colony of Earth (actually, of the federation, since the colony is only 200 years old), the prime directive does not apply, and all the "we must be careful not to interfere" handwringing of the early chapters is so much foolishness. Of course, so is the ability of the one-eyes to get free in the first place.

All they have to do is lock them in and set up a containment field, something that can be done in all transporter rooms. Even if you choose to believe that the one-eyes can instantly learn everything O'Brian knows about the ship, they still don't have the necessary tools to override. in order for the weapon-systems of the one-eyes to not be detected during transport, and therefore be a surprise later, both O'brian and Worf have to have been on some kind of severely intoxicating drug when the devices were first transported. In order for the crew not to have noticed when monitoring communications that there was no fictional or speculative programming, the entire communications section would have to be criminally incompetent - this is a key part of the pattern any alleged contact team would be trained to look at.

I could go on, but I've already wasted far more energy than this book deserves. The idea of a world where all fiction is banned is interesting, and I'm sure a rebellion against such an oppressive regime would make a fascinating series of stories. This isn't one of them. It isn't even a good addition to the Star Trek canon, since it more inconsistent and more poorly executed than even a typical episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

                  4 out of 5 stars STNG #11 - Gulliver's Fugitives - A good early STNG novel!.......2003-07-20

Given the complexity and thought provoking nature of this particular novel it is hard to believe that this is not only the only Star Trek novel written by this author is it the only novel one can find written by Keith Sharee. I found this novel to be in very good keeping with Gene Roddenberry's principals and ethos of Star Trek as it tells a well told tale that is capable of the "suspension of disbelief" within the Star Trek universe as it is a real future possibility and reminds one of Hitler's attempts to do the same.

                  The premise:

The Enterprise finds itself on the mission to find the USS Huxley, a starship that has been missing for over ten years, what they did not expect to find is a forgotten human colony named Rampart. Here is where the story takes an unexpected twist as this colony of humans has sought fit to ban fiction of any sort and it is considered to be the ultimate crime. As history proves proper, whenever there is a government that bans something harmless, or proves itself a dictatorship in any way, there is an underground movement and ultimately a civil war. It is that civil war in which Captain Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise suddenly find themselves inextricably in the middle of and must find an acceptable way of extricating themselves and solving this planet's problems...

                  What follows is certainly one of the better early Star Trek The Next Generation numbered novels that is well worth the time to locate and read for you will certainly not be disappointed. I highly recommend this early STNG novel to any and all Star Trek fans, casual or die hard alike! {ssintrepid}

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking in a different sense.......2003-07-09

Think about your closest friends; are they real to you? If you didn't know them in the first place, would they still be real? Now think about your favorite fiction characters; are they real? Think of a world without them; would YOU be real?

After Troi makes an intriguing contact with an "alien" life form from another dimension, thinking that this may be related to the disappearance of USS Huxley a long time ago, Picard decides to investigate inside a nebulae cloud where all subspace communications are blocked by natural sources. They are more than surprised to find a planet named Rampart inhabited by humans inside the cloud. Although human, Rampartians do not like the Enterprise's intrusion because it represents everything they tried to keep away from their society. The fiction in Rampart is a crime and the punishment is death. Since they were departed from the earth, Rampartian science is only excelled in one area: To read and cleanse minds; thus, not only actively involving in creating or consuming fiction is crime, but even thinking of it is... However there is a group of rebels - Dissenters - fighting against the dictatorship with the single weapon they have: Fiction! And Enterprise crew find themselves in the middle of this fight.

While the basic promise of the book seems to tell a simple story of rebels fighting against a dictatorship, the author manages to create a compelling storyline by combining some action and nice characters into it, Trek style. Most importantly you are asked what happens if you're ripped off all fiction, and Troi's dreams and the presentation of Dissenters give you a memorable sensation of how actually valuable your fiction characters to you than you've thought. A nice touch is added with Wesley's revelation that "he" is a part of a bigger "It", and the books ends with a nice twist.

I am almost sorry that this is a Trek book, because otherwise this would lead to a very nice Saga; How and why the colonists left earth, why are they greedy about fiction, how did they developed the technology and so on.

By the way, if you read and like this book, I recommend Ray Bradburry's Fahrenheit 451 too.

                  2 out of 5 stars Seriously flawed........2002-08-26

Which is a shame, because the basic idea had potential: Star Trek meets Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451". And the writing wasn't completely hopeless; as the story progressed, I did find myself caring what happened next, and moved by the fate of the characters. But there were too many flaws for a high rating; the entire subplot of Deanna Troi's visions/hallucinations was superfluous and pointless, and the concept that the planetary culture that the Enterprise was in conflict with could have provided as much of a challenge as they did required too much supension of disbelief for my taste.

Not the worst Star Trek book I've ever read by a long shot, but definitely on the weak end of the scale.

3 out of 5 stars Another wacky adventure.......2001-12-25

This story has many different moiving parts--a bit more than most STNG novels. The author attempts to tie everything together at the end but falls just short of being a really neat story. I wouldn't read it again but find myself no worse off for reading it once.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book for learning Chinese herbology.......2007-02-08

For many years I have held an interest in TCM, especially Chinese herbology. With my desire to study and enter the profession as a Chinese herbologist I was so pleased to have found this book. DR. Tierra gives an excellent, easy to understand explanation of the wonderful healing system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from Yin Yang theory to the eight principles and diagnosis. Many Chinese herbs are here which includes the organ mederians affected, indications, contraindications, energy and flavor, common name as well as the dosage. Many Western herbs are also explained. So, if you have an interest in Chinese herbology, TCM, or interested in natural healing, this book is the place to start.

I don't know if Dr. Tierra reads these reviews but just in case I want to say THANK YOU for this excellent work. It has really helped me as I begin my studies in Chinese herbology!

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-11-06

Being a Herbalist myself I really do love "The Way of Chinese Herbs" along with other books I keep them as references to help me help my clinets overcome challenges. The author has very useful information and his own insites that are very important to me. It is one thing to know the herbs themselves but knowing from personal experience how to use them means a lot more to me and Michael Tierra does a great job!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction and handbook to Chinese Medicine!.......2000-02-28

My husband and I have many books on Chinese Medicine, but always return to this one. It is the best in providing the names for Chinese medicines by ailment -- something most helpful when searching in Chinatown for the medicine. What is especially useful is the names of the Chinese formulas in pill form. Gan mao ling has been a life saver in fighting off colds and flu, and that is only one of the herbs we have found! The Chinese clerks/herbalists have been impressed with our knowledge, asking where we have been able to get the information and names of the right medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written, Tierra is a visionary.......1999-03-29

My Father, Dr. Michael Tierra is trully inspiring to me. I have watched him over the course of my life wholeheartedly embrace herbalism. I can remember going with him to many different herbal healers all over the country, and listen to him try to get as much information from them as he could, even though sometimes it was hard to understand their english, and they seemed hesitant to teach their ancient knowlege to white people. This sort of thing never seemed to stop him . I've seen him quickly pull off the side of the road and pick a bunch of fresh herbs that seemed to call out to him, and go home and make them into many different healing rememdies for his friends, patients, and family. I've studied with him in his clinic for many years and watched him make individual formulas for his patients, and it reminded me of watching a great musician play his instrument. I am in awe of his genuine love and connection with all of the herbs - Chinese, Ayurvedic, Western, etc. For all of us who have had the honor to be with and study from someone who is trully connected with the herbs, intuitively, mentally, scientifically, clinically, etc. it is a real privilege to have a compilation of his experience in a book so all can reap the rewards.
