    Book Description

"Photography has become an increasingly pervasive medium of choice in contemporary art practice and is even employed at times by artists who do not necessarily consider themselves to be photographers. How did this come to be? The Last Picture Show will address the emergence of this phenomenon of artists using photography by tracing the development of conceptual trends in postwar photographic practice from its first glimmerings in the 60s in the work of artists such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, Ed Ruscha and Bruce Nauman, to its rise to art-world prominence in the work of the artists of the late 70s and early 80s including Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. Intended as a major genealogy of the rise of a still-powerful and evolving photographic practice by artists, the checklist will include a wide array of works examining a range of issues: performativity and photographic practice; portraiture and cultural identity; the formal and social architectonics of the built environment; societal and individual interventions in the landscape; photography's relationship to sculpture and painting; the visual mediation of meaning in popular culture; and the poetic and conceptual investigation of visual non-sequiturs, disjunctions and humorous absurdities. Bringing together a newly commissioned body of scholarship with reprints of important historical texts, The Last Picture Show seeks to define the legacy that has produced a rich body of photographic practice in the art world today."

5 out of 5 stars From A to Z and Everything In Between.......2007-05-14

Twenty-six boys and girls, from Alberto to Zara, have a problem. They each have something someone else wants, and they each need something they don't have. That darn alphabet just isn't cooperating!

Dinah has a doggy bone, but what she really needs is an egg. Louise has a letter, but she really wants a marshmallow. And poor Vladimir has a vase, but he really, really needs a water ski!

Each of them can get what they want, but only if they cooperate and switch the alphabet around! The answer to all of their problems is on the last page, if only they know how to get to the solution.

This is a fun book, and has the added bonus of containing a hidden letter on each page. And believe me, some of these letters are REALLY well hidden! Kids and parents will have to work together--like the children in the story--to find all the hidden letters.

    5 out of 5 stars Read-again Reference: Alphabetter.......2007-03-11

Twenty-six funky kids, misplaced objects and hidden letters transform the familiar ABC drill into an entertaining, interactive story.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations.......2007-01-07

This has been a pleasant read with my 4 yr old. The illustrations are awesome.

      Book Description

Dan Graham is among the most influential of the Conceptual artists who emerged in America during the mid 1960s. A pioneer in performance and video art in the 1970s, Graham later turned his attention to architectural projects designed for social interaction in public spaces, among them The Children's Pavilion (1989) with Jeff Wall. Writing has always been a major aspect of Graham's work. His texts range from early Conceptual art pieces inserted in mass-market magazines, to writing on his fellow artists, to analyses of popular culture, from Dean Martin to the post-Punk era. Well-known also among architects and urban theorists, during the 1990s Graham has been offered major public commissions throughout North America and Europe. London-based curator Mark Francis discusses with the artist how his public participation-based work has evolved. Brussels-based critic Birgit Pelzer draws on her extensive knowledge of Graham's work and writings. New York-based architectural theorist Beatriz Colomina focuses on Graham's Alteration to a Suburban House (1978). The artist has chosen an extract from the science fiction novel Ubik by Philip K Dick, whose writings were a formative influence. A substantial Artist's Writings section, key to understanding Dan Graham, completes the book.

      Book Description

Omnivorous and indefatigable, suggestible but independent, adolescents don't want to be balanced. They love extremes of everything from fashion and art to music and the Internet. Observed and studied by experts of all kinds, their behavior monitored by psychologists, educators, and marketing executives, adolescents represent a decisive and increasingly valuable segment of the buying public. They adore and consume trendy clothes and brand-new bands; they must be cool regardless of the cost. And adults turn to them more and more for clues on how to remain forever young and hip. The Fourth Sex turns a critical, illustrated spotlight on adolescence, a territory of transition crisscrossed by the most varied creative energies. A series of iconographic materials begins in the 1960s and moves up to the present, revealing clothes, behavior patterns, novels, and visual artworks created or inspired by the transnational tribe that are teenagers. Excerpted authors include David Foster Wallace, Arata Isozaki, Philip Roth, William Golding, J.G. Ballard, Beavis & Butthead, Jim Carroll, Stephen King, Vladimir Nabokov, Douglas Coupland, Dick Hebdige, Bret Easton Ellis, and Dave Eggers. Represented artists include Vanessa Beecroft, Raymond Pettibon, Mike Kelley, Elizabeth Peyton, Karen Kilimnik, Charles Ray, Takashi Murakami, Larry Clark, Rineke Dijkstra, Paul McCarthy, Richard Prince, Gilbert & George, Gavin Turk, and Richard Billingham. And modeled fashion and lifestyle designers include Malcolm MacLaren, Paco Rabanne, Benetton, Veronique Branquinho, Comme des Gar ons, Stssy, Coca-Cola, PlayStation, Diesel, Katherine Hamnett, and David Sims. The book's shifting, politically incorrect graphic style gives form and color to all the contradictions and ambiguities of an unhappy age that we never cease to remember with nostalgia and the occasional twinge of pain. Published in association with Fondazione Pitti Immagine Discovery.

      Book Description

      introduction by Jeff Wall

The internationally renowned artist Dan Graham is widely acknowledged as one of the leading members of the 1960s conceptual art movement. However, his subsequent work in photography, performance, film, video, and the fusion of art and architecture, though well known in Europe and Japan, is less well known in English-speaking countries.

In Rock My Religion (MIT Press, 1993), Graham explored mainly the work of other artists. In this collection, he articulates the rationale behind his own art. The broadly accessible essays, which include his most canonical texts, are organized both thematically and chronologically. They chart his career from conceptual art for magazine pages of the 1960s, to work integrating video, television, architecture, film, and performance of the 1970s, to his pavilion sculptures of the 1980s and 1990s. The book also features an essay by Jeff Wall and interviews with Graham that address the art historical references and theoretical principles underlying his work.

Published in association with the Marian Goodman Gallery, New York.

An insightful essay by Peggy Gale introduces this transcription of historic talks by internationally known artists, recorded some 30 years ago at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Included are talks by Vito Acconci (1977), Carl Andre (1969), Joseph Beuys (1976), Daniel Buren (1973), James Lee Byars (1970), Paterson Ewen (1976), Robert Filliou (1973), Dan Graham (1973 and 1977), Douglas Huebler (1973), Joseph Kosuth (1969), Sol LeWitt (1970), Mel Ramsden for Art & Language (1972), Alan Sondheim (1973), and Lawrence Weiner (1972). These transcriptions are all collected for the first time in this volume. An important resource for contemporary art and its attendant issues, Artists Talk: 1969-1977 reveals artists' concerns during a period bracketed by conceptual art and an international restructuring of power and influence in the art world.

          Book Description

The intelligent irony that resonates through the best-known body of work of the American artist Tony Oursler, namely, his video and projection installations, results from the subtle combination of sound, language, and pop culture images that suffuse it. These elements are thoroughly explored in this monograph, the most extensive publication ever about Oursler and his work. His videos often employ the strangely projected human face to created bizarre contemporary icons and fragmented narratives that, while containing a humorous element, also speak to the dislocation caused by contemporary issues of sex, violence, and power. Tony Oursler includes 180 illustrations from his video, sculpture, and mixed-media works on paper, as well as an extensive selection of the artist's own writings. There are also two long conversations between Oursler and the artists Mike Kelley and Dan Graham, which testify to the long-lasting mutual appreciation and collaboration between them. This is a major new publication on the career of one of the most important American artists of the last two decades.

            Book Description

The story behind the most famous jazz photograph of all time.

And what a day it was, when nearly sixty jazz greats gathered on a Harlem street one morning in August 1958 for what was, incredibly, the photographer Art Kane's first professional shoot. Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Mary Lou Williams, Thelonious Monk, Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Marian McPartland...No one know knew how many would show up at 10:00 a.m. for what was planned as the centerfold for Esquire magazine, but at the appointed hour they began coming--by subway, by taxi, and on foot. What resulted became the most famous jazz photograph ever--instantly recognizable to jazz fans the world over and the inspiration for the 1995 Oscar-nominated documentary A Great Day in Harlem. This remarkable photograph and the outtakes and candids shot that day--reproduced here in elegant duotone on high-quality paper--are complemented by biographical information on all the musicians in the photograph and by essays from some of the greatest jazz writers of our time--Whitney Balliett, Ralph Ellison, Gary Giddins, and Dan Morgenstern.
