"Photography has become an increasingly pervasive medium of choice in contemporary art practice and is even employed at times by artists who do not necessarily consider themselves to be photographers. How did this come to be? The Last Picture Show will address the emergence of this phenomenon of artists using photography by tracing the development of conceptual trends in postwar photographic practice from its first glimmerings in the 60s in the work of artists such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, Ed Ruscha and Bruce Nauman, to its rise to art-world prominence in the work of the artists of the late 70s and early 80s including Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. Intended as a major genealogy of the rise of a still-powerful and evolving photographic practice by artists, the checklist will include a wide array of works examining a range of issues: performativity and photographic practice; portraiture and cultural identity; the formal and social architectonics of the built environment; societal and individual interventions in the landscape; photography's relationship to sculpture and painting; the visual mediation of meaning in popular culture; and the poetic and conceptual investigation of visual non-sequiturs, disjunctions and humorous absurdities. Twenty-six boys and girls, from Alberto to Zara, have a problem. They each have something someone else wants, and they each need something they don't have. That darn alphabet just isn't cooperating!
Dinah has a doggy bone, but what she really needs is an egg. Louise has a letter, but she really wants a marshmallow. And poor Vladimir has a vase, but he really, really needs a water ski!
Each of them can get what they want, but only if they cooperate and switch the alphabet around! The answer to all of their problems is on the last page, if only they know how to get to the solution.
This is a fun book, and has the added bonus of containing a hidden letter on each page. And believe me, some of these letters are REALLY well hidden! Kids and parents will have to work together--like the children in the story--to find all the hidden letters.

Dan Graham is among the most influential of the Conceptual artists who emerged in America during the mid 1960s. A pioneer in performance and video art in the 1970s, Graham later turned his attention to architectural projects designed for social interaction in public spaces, among them The Children's Pavilion (1989) with Jeff Wall. Writing has always been a major aspect of Graham's work. His texts range from early Conceptual art pieces inserted in mass-market magazines, to writing on his fellow artists, to analyses of popular culture, from Dean Martin to the post-Punk era. Well-known also among architects and urban theorists, during the 1990s Graham has been offered major public commissions throughout North America and Europe. London-based curator Mark Francis discusses with the artist how his public participation-based work has evolved. Brussels-based critic Birgit Pelzer draws on her extensive knowledge of Graham's work and writings. New York-based architectural theorist Beatriz Colomina focuses on Graham's Alteration to a Suburban House (1978). The artist has chosen an extract from the science fiction novel Ubik by Philip K Dick, whose writings were a formative influence. A substantial Artist's Writings section, key to understanding Dan Graham, completes the book.

odd but awesome book! an expressionistic piece of art. a book filled with a colaboration of photographs that show the feeling of being an adolesent and shows real life in action. a fun book to look at with friends. also in this book is diary entries from different people and old magazine covers. an allover nifty buy. i promise youll love it!

The internationally renowned artist Dan Graham is widely acknowledged as one of the leading members of the 1960s conceptual art movement. However, his subsequent work in photography, performance, film, video, and the fusion of art and architecture, though well known in Europe and Japan, is less well known in English-speaking countries.
In Rock My Religion (MIT Press, 1993), Graham explored mainly the work of other artists. In this collection, he articulates the rationale behind his own art. The broadly accessible essays, which include his most canonical texts, are organized both thematically and chronologically. They chart his career from conceptual art for magazine pages of the 1960s, to work integrating video, television, architecture, film, and performance of the 1970s, to his pavilion sculptures of the 1980s and 1990s. The book also features an essay by Jeff Wall and interviews with Graham that address the art historical references and theoretical principles underlying his work.
Published in association with the Marian Goodman Gallery, New York.

this book is ok, its nothing special. its alot of interviews with dan flavin and him talking about this theorys and about his work. i wasnt too impressed and didnt bother to read the whole thing.
