1 out of 5 stars 1/3 is reprints of trading cards, skip it.......2006-10-25

The Art of the Horus Heresy books have until now had high production values and interesting art work. But in attempting to stretch the series to 4 volumes they obviously ran out of material. The story and artwork end 2/3 of the way through this book, the remainder is thumbnail-sized reprints of trading cards, almost too small to read. Even some of the story is reprinted from old White Dwarf articles.

This last volume contains the climax of the story (hint, the Emperor wins) and some new plot points but ultimately is padded. The card reprints mean nothing to me and I doubt would even please the CCG players. If you're considering buying this book you probably are a GW fan and already familiar with what will happen. So skip it.

              Book Description

In this lively and colorful book of popular history, journalist Betsy Israel shines a light on the old stereotypes that have stigmatized single women for years and celebrates their resourceful sense of spirit, enterprise, and unlimited success in a world where it is no longer unusual or unlikely to be unwed.

Drawing extensively on primary sources, including private journals, newspaper stories, magazine articles, advertisements, films, and other materials from popular media, Israel paints remarkably vivid portraits of single women -- and the way they were perceived -- throughout the decades. From the nineteenth-century spinsters, of New England to the Bowery girls of New York City, from the 1920s flappers to the 1940s working women of the war years and the career girls of the 1950s and 1960s, single women have fought to find and feel comfortable in that room of their own. One need only look at Bridget Jones and the Sex and the City gang to see that single women still maintain an uneasy relationship with the rest of society -- and yet they radiate an aura of glamour and mystery in popular culture.

As witty as it is well researched, as thoughtful as it is lively, Bachelor Girl is a must-read for women everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars The single woman in the 20th century.......2004-09-10

I really enjoyed her analysis of the cultural icons of the various decades. Her screenwriting background shows in her delightful analysis of a variety of films from the silent era all the way up through the recent television sitcoms. I think her final chapter is the weakest, but it's hard to analyize something while living in the middle of it.

I stayed up until one in the morning to finish the book which is a testiment to how well written it is.

              5 out of 5 stars bachelor girls?.......2004-04-15

Betsy Israel has an approach that is very readable and not at all male-bashing (she happens to be married). In a few chapters, she even honorably mentions a few males that have furthered the causes for women. If anything, most of the plights that women have been through is because of poor laws that were constructed to restrict them to one way of life. I also love how she portrays the many different single women that have struggled valiantly to bring us to where we are today. She also covers each decade's progress and setbacks all the way up to modern day.

I would recommend this book for all women to read - especially non-married women. After reading this book, you'll most likely feel relieved that you are in fact... a bachelor girl.

3 out of 5 stars Detailed History of Single, but City, Girls.......2003-01-22

This was a very interesting history of single women in the last 150 years. The author did extensive research on the topic. One shortcoming that the author acknowledges--the book focuses too much on being a single woman in New York City. She does not address the history of single women on a national level. Still, it is an interesting read and I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful as a research text, succinct history.......2003-01-02

I bought this book specifically because of the historical aspect of young women in the early 1900's, and found it immensely helpful as well as very well written. I have to admit I haven't read through to the end, because the novel I'm writing deals with women in that era. I found Bachelor Girl to be exactly what I wanted as a reference as well as engaging to read. I wish more writers would take upon themselves the task of presenting history in this story-telling style. Highly Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting read.......2002-12-28

"Bachelor Girl" is an exhaustive history of single women beginning in the mid-19th century to present day (although the author spends a lot more time on the first half of the 20th century). I had no idea the lives of single women back then were so interesting. Betsy Israel discusses their jobs/careers, how they lived, and how they affected American culture. The title, though, is a bit misleading--the bulk of the book deals with how the media and society viewed single women through the ages, not on their "secret lives." My only complaint about the book was the last chapter about the modern single woman. As a single woman a few years out of college, I didn't relate at all to anything she discussed. Especially the section on "baby brides" where she describes girls fresh out of college getting married. Who is she talking about?? None of my friends from college (male or female) are engaged or married, or close to it. As far as I know, marriage among recent college grads is a rarity. She fails to point out that people from certain groups tend to get married younger than average (i.e., people in the military, deeply religious people, people from certain ethnic groups). I think she glossed over things too much in the last section. She also kind of has the consensus that singles have an "uncomfortable place in society." Huh?? As a single, I just don't see it.

But I did agree with the message she gave at the end, that everyone, whether they choose to get married or not, should make their own decisions, and the media should stop bothering them about it.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Longer.......2006-10-05

It seems that happiness eluded Rose.
Considering the other "Rose" books, this final book was far too short. Personally I would have liked it better if the author had written on about Rose leaving to go with Gillette Lane in the real estate venture. I'm one of those people who doesn't like to be left in the dark.
I read "From West to Home" a book composed of letters Laura wrote to Almanzo from San Francisco. From this book, we learn Laura visited Rose and Rose's husband Gil Lane in 1915. So we know Rose and Gil got married.
But actually it would have been better if Bachelor Girl had been longer or even another "Rose" book had been written.
I thought Paul was awful to Rose. He strung her along for so long and then left her to cope with the "damage" to her reputation and her character after she and Paul stayed out all night. It wasn't their fault the boat was late or slow, but people who knew her in town assumed she was trash after that and basically let her know what they thought.
Later in San Francisco, Paul visited Rose and stung her with a remark about her wearing makeup and went wild over Rose's remark about an egagement ring.
This book is entertaining, but I couldn't help wishing for a longer read.

1 out of 5 stars Reads like a Harlequin Romance.......2005-11-30

The writing style is completely different than the other books. At times it reads like what I would imagine a Harlequin Romance would be like. The book is just dreadful and completely inappropriate for the target market, i.e., girls from 6 - 12. As other reviewers have stated (thorvald's and RoseFan's take below are spot on), Rose is no longer the self confident heroine but a confused follower. She falls in with the wrong crowd. I guess a parent who is reading along with their daughter could use this as a learning lesson, but the subject is too adult for the bedtime story age child. I suggest you avoid this book.

              2 out of 5 stars Bachelor Girl.......2005-03-17

As true Laura and/or Rose fans know, "Bachelor Girl" is simply a redress of Roger MacBride's 1977 "biography" of Rose Wilder Lane, which in turn was a rip-off of Roses's 1919 'semi' autobiographical novel, "Diverging Roads".

I feel this was a poor finish to the "Rose Years" series. Given that the MacBride family inherited the hugely successful and profitable "Little House" franchise from Rose, it's a shame that they've passed off this fictional account not once, but TWICE, as a true depiction of Rose's life as a young woman.

While the essentials and facts are mostly true, anyone who has read or researched Rose's life knows that Rose and Paul Cooley were never "engaged". And Gilette Lane was not the "dashing older man" portrayed in the books. In fact, he was one year younger than Rose! Evidence supports that they met while Rose was working in Kansas City and her subsequent move to San Francisco was likely to follow him there, marrying him the next year, BEFORE they sold real estate together.

My disgust with this book really lies in the fact that the owners of the Little House franchise (the MacBride heirs) should have shown more respect for both Rose and the fans of the series and ended the Rose years with a more accurate and honest portrayal of their benefactress.

The spunky characterization of Rose from the earlier books is gone here, and we're left feeling concerned about her choices and future. Nice example to set for girls of today who've read this series from the beginning!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent portrayal of a young woman...seeing the real world.......2005-03-16

I think " bachelor girl" is excellent. It manages to portray an young adult's frustrations and dilemas almost accurately.
The way Rose felt frustrated about not doing anything useful, when she lived with her parents and then her struggle to work and support herself...May be this book is not appealing to children as it deals mostly with an young adult's mind...
and even the temporary loss of confidence in Rose is perfectly natural as any young and intellectual adult will go through that phase atleast once. I'm very impressed with this book.

1 out of 5 stars Not a very good ending to the series.......2003-10-03

I've read most of the rose years. The books before this one are interesting. In this last book, I was very displeased. Rose leaves home and boards in a small isolated room which leaves her with no friends. Although she makes friends towards the end, she ends up doing things she shouldn't and loses her engagment with her childhood sweetheart because of her new friends. This book was a disappointment to me after enjoying the books before this. :(

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing look at single women in New York.......2007-08-13

Betsy Israel's book takes a look at single women in the United States, specifically in New York City. I think because Israel isn't single herself, she's able to approach the subject with more objectivity. She begins at the end of the 19th century, with the "singly blessed," (a great term, I think) and continues through the decades, with the Bowery Gals, shop girls, flappers, Gibson Girls, the Riveting Rosie of WWII (both of the latter being completely made up stereotypes), the career girl. It seems as though single women in America have never fit into one category, even though the rest of society tries to place her in one.

The book gave us a great picture of single women's lives in relation to their married counterparts, though I would have liked to have seen more on the single women of today (conversely, it might have been fun to have seen more on women before the late 19th century). This is an excellently-researched book that makes me feel a little bit better about being single in the modern world.

Very witty, clever and well written -- a nice packaging of history. I wish it had dissected That Girl and the Mary Tyler Moore show just a bit more, but overall, it was very satisfying. Every bit as good as I had expected from its reviews.

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating, but needed a fact-checker.......2004-10-01

Great book, fascinating stuff, and the author's a terrific writer. But a couple of factual flubs (Florenz Ziegfeld's Florodora Girls? Jean Harlow died from an abortion?) had me wondering how much else I could trust in the book as "history."

Read it for the great excerpts Israel's found, and for her own well-expressed opinions--but be wary of using this as a history text.

4 out of 5 stars This is just the book I wanted!.......2004-08-21

Betsy Israel has written THE book I've been searching for. As a 38 year old single woman, never married, I wondered who the single women pioneers were. Did they stumble into singlehood like I did or was it a conscious decision? Did they decide like me, that having a disastrous marriage was worse than being on my own?

It was amazing to read about other single women, how they lived, the choices they made, and how the media and society manipulated and disrespected them. Two hundred years ago single women were accused of being witches since no one understood why these women would not want to fulfill their duty to marry and produce children. Why are people so suspicious of single women? Not long ago a coworker asked me if I was a witch. I told him I'm a Baptist. He also asked me if I was a lesbian (another common accusation mentioned in "Bachelor Girl".) I love men; I just haven't found one I can live with. Yet. It was great to read this book and know that other women have experienced the same things I've experienced.

People have assumed I avoided marriage to pursue my career. If it weren't for my career I would have been forced to marry the wrong man in order to survive. I love my career, but I did not give up anything for it. I've also learned to fix things around the home I own, I've bought two cars on my own, I have planned for retirement, all things that many single women avoid doing as Betsy Israel points out in this book. However, I know married women who have done the same things I've done because their loving husbands had skills other than fixing things, negotiating deals or managing money. I also know women in miserable marriages who've had to do the same things because their husbands wouldn't do them.

And when I'm feeling unlucky and unloved, reading about the factory worker girls, or shop girls who walked the fine line between their reality and society's perceptions I realize modern single women have it way easier. When I feel lonely I remember the amazing freedom I have that my single predecessors did not have.

I'm so tired of books for singles that are all about dating, finding a man and getting him down the aisle. "Bachelor Girl" has none of that. I read that other book about the rules and like women in "Bachelor Girl" I laughed so hard I fell out of my chair. This book is about real single women and how they made their own rules and tried to live good lives and have a little fun too.

Currently, the number of people choosing to stay single is rising. The 2000 Census shows that 25% of households are singles living alone. It was 13% in 1960. You'd think the politicians would be worried about the rise of singles rather than rising divorce rate or gay marriage, but I'm just happy to have the heat off me a little bit. But why should any of us take any criticism for our lives? Singles are a huge voting block, the politicians should pay attention to us.

The only place the book seems to fall a little short is in regards to the modern single woman. Betsy Israel covers the massive amount of crap we've all found on the Internet regarding singles and it's great to see this validation in print. But Ms. Israel focuses on Ally McBeal and Bridget Jones as archetypes. But for me the archetypes are Claudia on "Less Than Perfect", Lorelei Gilmore on "Gilmore Girls" and Mary Richards. Ms. Israel also gets a little snarky with her real subjects' attitudes. It seems that many of them are responding to their surroundings rather than feeling proud of their own accomplishments. All but one interviewee refused to use her real name. I hope this book will empower single women to always be proud of their lives, make smart decisions for themselves and not let the media or society define who they are.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and enlightening.......2004-04-26

I picked this up by impulse at the library, not sure if I would find myself reading a feminazi diatribe or a tittering prurient exposé. Thankfully, it was neither.

"Bachelor Girl" is an engrossing examination of unmarried women over the decades -- the society they lived in, the choices they faced, and the lives they lived. My adult daughter is reading it now; I insisted on it, after we watched "Mona Lisa Smiles" together and she found the movie's emphasis on getting married too bizarre and implausible. A few chapters into it, she said, "This is the sort of stuff I wanted to learn in my women's studies courses."

Betsy Israel's writing is engaging and compelling; her approach is sensible and even-handed. If more people would read this, (and as a companion book, "The Way We Never Were") perhaps more energy could be channeled toward defining a healthier future instead of wasted on nostalgic delusions.

              Book Description

In plays such as Isn't It Romantic, Uncommon Women and Others, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Heidi Chronicles, Wendy Wasserstein put her finger on the pulse of her past-modern, post-feminist sisters and delivered her diagnosis with shrewd good humor and an unerring sense of the absurd. That same engaging sensibility bubbles through the twenty-nine essays in Bachelor Girls, in which Wasserstein presents her observations on:
-- Boyfriends -- "The worse the boyfriend, the more stunning your American Express bill."
-- Role Models -- "In the forties emulating an ideal woman meant bobbing your hair like Betty Grable's. In the eighties, because of Jessica Lange, women have to get a Pulitzer Prize-winning actor-playwright to fall in love with them, have a child by one of the world's great dancers, be nominated for two Academy Awards, and enjoy doing the laundry alone on a farm."
-- Success -- "I knew my friend Patti was a big-time Hollywood agent the first time I saw her dial a telephone with a pencil."

Ranging from the dietary secrets of lemon mousse to the politics of the second marriage, with stopovers at a bar mitzvah in Westchester, a chess tournament in Rumania, and a Tokyo production of Isn't It Romantic, Bachelor Girls is pure Wasserstein, which is to say, pure joy.

I love Wendy Waserstein...in 1988 (at 13 years old) I saw the Heidi Chronicles on Broadway and loved it. I never knew that almost 17 years later I would actually be Heidi. Wendy Waserstein is an incredible journalist of the single woman's life in NYC no matter what the decade is... She understands the dilemma of professionalism vs. being the "woman who has it all".

              3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2001-08-15

There were certainly some insightful essays in this book. The problem was I expected more humor, and it just wasn't there. As a result, the book doesn't have alot of value as something I'd reread over again. With the exception of two essays - one about a bar mitzvah she attended, and one about the Balkans, most of the book just wasn't all that interesting. Well written, technically, but somewhat dull. And I got tired of some of the self-congratulatory remarks and stories about her plays.

3 out of 5 stars An Average Read.......2001-05-14

This book is a very fast read because it is a collection of twenty-nine short episodes from a "bachelor girl's" life. Wasserstein speculates on these episodes in an informal manner, as if she's writing in her journal, but her language carries a somewhat academic tone.

This book is intellectually amusing in some places because of Wasserstein's clever insights, but it certainly isn't laugh-out-loud funny. Most "bachelor girls" will probably be able to relate to a couple of her experiences, but I found a lot of the episodes and insights to be unique to Wasserstein's life and not exactly universal in their appeal.

"Bridget Jones's Diary" is a much more humorous and satisfying read, but "Bachelor Girls" does have its virtues. Brevity is one of them. Also, "Bachelor Girls" does tend to inspire a reading "bachelor girl" to think about her own experiences and bounce them off the insights provided by Wasserstein.

Overall, this is a good read to pass the time with, but it is about 2 stars short of my desirable standard. I expected it to contain more humor, more universal appeal, and more cohesive chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and Honest.......2000-08-09

I enjoyed this novel. The chapters are very humerous and honest - Ms. Wasserstein clearly enjoys laughing at herself. My best friend read my copy, as did my sister, mother, and grandmother. Everyone reported rave reviews for Wasserstein's talent. My copy of Bachelor Girks was last seen with my college professor, and I hope that it continues to circulate.
