Book Description
This attractive, small-format book highlights key elements of the richly ornamental style that took Europe and America by storm at the turn of the last century and became a major influence on all fine and decorative art forms.
The book features short thematic sections and a rich selection of fabulous artworks in every medium, some well known and others previously unpublished, to provide readers with a lively, informative overview of the daring flamboyance of Art Nouveau. Perfect for anyone who loves Art Nouveau, this handsome, fully illustrated book makes a terrific, affordably priced gift.
PAUL GREENHALGH is exhibition curator and editor of the accompanying book, Art Nouveau, 1890-1914.
Customer Reviews:
A brief yet fascinating introduction to Art Nouveau and its origins ..........2006-03-12
From the outset, Paul Greenhalgh does what other art historians often fail to do, by placing the design style into historical context for the general reader. "Imagine a world," he writes, "in which virtually every aspect of life has undergone, in a single life-span, a complete physical transformation. Art Nouveau arrived in a world such as this." Using side-by-side comparisons, the author shows the direct stylistic impact of other artistic traditions and objects, such as rococo sculpture, Japanese prints, and Islamic decorative arts. Although the Minoan influences on later works are curiously absent, Greenhalgh effectively illustrates how, for example, "Islamic culture exuded a heavy sensuality for Europeans whose sense of the Orient was based upon the myth of the Eastern woman ..." One sees this Orientalist resonance in the sensuous glassware of Louis Comfort Tiffany and in Theodore Riviere's erotically charged sculpture, Carthage or Salammbo chez Matho. Interestingly, Greenhalgh attributes the demise of Art Nouveau to precisely what it celebrated, an "eclectic range of sources". Unusual in a book of this size, there is a substantial chronology with key moments in Art Nouveau listed by year and country of origin.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful gift for a skater.......2007-06-25
I gave this as a birthday present to my guy friend who is a figure skater. Yes the book is old but he says that everything in it is as true today as yesterday (particularly the exercises for strong edge control). What has changed is the competition rules-- school figures are no longer done, but their mastery will make you a better skater. So you can read this book as history, or as a text. The exercises are still good. However, no one dresses at the rink the way she suggests anymore.
Skating from yesteryear.......2000-03-29
While this book is no longer in print, it should be found in many libraries. It was written by former US Olympic skater Maribel Vinson(Owen) who had competed in the 20's and 30's winning many US titles. Because of her extensive history in the sport and continued involvement through her daughters' skating careers, MS Owen is able to provide years of experience made simple for the novice or casual skater. Some photos are included of Maribel's daughter Laurance(the US national champion) in various skating positions. There are also diagrams for the footwork involved when completing different jumps. It probably now includes many things no longer necessary in competetion as well as not including the many spins and jumps that have since been added over the years. While this book will probably not have much use for skating today, it does offer a look of what skating was like when artistry was more important than athleticism. Tragically a short while after this book was written, Ms Owen and her daughters along with the entire US figure skating team died in a plane crash on the way to the 1961 World Figure Skating Competition in Brussels,Belgium.

I love this book!.......1998-09-05
I first saw this book in the public library. The book was so old and well used I was afraid it was out of print. I'm so glad to have found it here. It is such a great book, it's the kind you want to keep on hand. I didn't want to have to run to the library, and hope it was there, every time I wanted to use it. It's not just for kids, it's just kid sized. This book shares the history of and useful information of some of the knots. It's well illustrated and has clearly written instructions so I can learn to make the knots. My 10 yr. old son loves this book too. This book has a wide variety to choose from: -Magic with String and Rope, -Knots, Splices, Fancy Knot Work, -Useful Things Made From Rope and String, -Braiding, -String Games and Figures.
My son & I ARE having lots of fun with Fun With String.

Book Description
From the traditional straw guy to a painted sheet-metal mermaid, these 30 scarecrows and their yard figure cousins are simply out of the ordinary—and that’s great news for the many crafters who compete in “Best Scarecrow” contests held at fairs and other venues throughout America. It’s easy to construct one of these wildly creative figures with the information and instruction contained in this whimsical, charming celebration of scarecrow art. Some are crafted from organic materials such as gourds and bamboo. Others use recycled items, including a “Tin Can Man” and a quirky woman made from old umbrellas. A few double as a planter, trellis, or address marker. Whether to scare away birds or attract attention to the garden, these make great additions to any outdoor space.

Creative Scarecrows:35 Fun Figures for Your Yard & Garden.......2004-10-05
This book inspired me to create a scarecrow for my backyard in San Francisco. My sons and I had a ball recycling junk to make our Garden Goddess. I thought this book had fantastic seasonal ideas. The Pumpkin Shepherd is adorable for fall. My sons can hardly wait to create the White Rabbit in the spring and what a great way to recycle all those white plastic bags. What an excellent family activity. My other favorites are the One Man Band made with an old chair and tomatoe cage and the Junction City Jug Band with plastic milk jugs for heads. What an inspirational and creative way to take items that are considered junk and turn them into something magical. The illustrations are really well done. Thanks for writing this book! Happy foraging!

Using stunning yet unintimidating photographs and simple techniques, this photography guide teaches parents or grandparents how to take better photographs of their children. The images are the main teaching tools, so the reader is not bogged down by jargon. The supporting text is strong but simple, as are the instruction-filled captions. Every photograph profiled in the book was taken with a basic digital or 35mm camera in natural or simple lighting, so parents do not need to worry about using complicated lighting gear or techniques. Parents will learn to take strong photographs that capture the personality and spirit that only their children have.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for beginners.......2007-05-30
This is a great book for beginners or people who always seem to wonder "Why do everyone else's pictures always look so much better than mine?" The best thing about it is that it's short on text and long on visual examples. For visual learners, it's a dream.
Wonderful manual full of simple tips for great photos of children!.......2007-02-17
This is a great book on photographing children, covering basic rules of good photography (eg, the rule of thirds) as well as more specific ideas particularly applicable to children. I especially liked that this book is full of photographic examples: every page has at least 2-3 photos displaying various options, which helps the reader to immediately get a clear visual sense of what makes for a "good" picture of children. The author begins by focusing on general principles such as composition and light, then moves on to address more specific topics, including photographing infants, setting the stage, and taking candid shots. He also focuses on picture-taking for special occasions, from sporting events (including how to position for each sport) to birthday parties to holidays. Finally, there is a small but helpful section on scrapbooking. Although this book covers children of all ages, it would make a great baby shower gift (which is why I bought it). Overall, this is an excellent picture-taking guide which I think would serve to help virtually anyone improve their pictures of not just children but people in general; highly recommended!
Provides clear and simple rules to improve your photos.......2006-10-10
I was skeptical about whether I would learn anything new about taking pictures of my kids, but this book is great! Clear and concise rules are provided in an easy-to-read layout, with most lessons spelled out in a 2-page spread and accompanied by examples of both what not to do and what to do.
The author covers rules of composition and light, as well as techniques about where to place yourself to get the best shots. There are also sections specific to shooting sports, birthday parties, and holidays.
Very useful!
Surprisingly Helpful Book.......2005-10-13
A friend loaned this book to me with the recommendation "There are some decent tips in here." I initially put the book away, thinking that my two high school photography classes had been enough instruction for something as simple as taking snapshots of my daughter. Turns out I was wrong.
The book is filled with practical advice. And more importantly, each tip is illustrated with side-by-side photos to show what happens if you do it right, and what happens if you don't. With each chapter you learn a new tip or technique, understand the "why" behind it because you see it in the many photo comparisons, and you begin to internalize it. I imagine with time and a little practice, the tips will become second nature for me, and then I'll loan the book to someone else.
One last note. This isn't a book for photography buffs with big gear bags. All the photos were taken with a basic 35mm camera and no special lenses, and I found the content highly relevant for my own photography, which is 95% shot from an everyday Olympus digital camera.
Glad I got this book.......2004-08-11
I was skeptical, but am glad I bought this book. It's easy to understand, and changed the way I see before I shoot. My pictures are actually worth looking at now. Good one.

Book Description
At the age of twenty-six, Maarten Troost—who had been pushing the snooze button on the alarm clock of life by racking up useless graduate degrees and muddling through a series of temp jobs—decided to pack up his flip-flops and move to Tarawa, a remote South Pacific island in the Republic of Kiribati. He was restless and lacked direction, and the idea of dropping everything and moving to the ends of the earth was irresistibly romantic. He should have known better.
The Sex Lives of Cannibals tells the hilarious story of what happens when Troost discovers that Tarawa is not the island paradise he dreamed of. Falling into one amusing misadventure after another, Troost struggles through relentless, stifling heat, a variety of deadly bacteria, polluted seas, toxic fish—all in a country where the only music to be heard for miles around is “La Macarena.” He and his stalwart girlfriend Sylvia spend the next two years battling incompetent government officials, alarmingly large critters, erratic electricity, and a paucity of food options (including the Great Beer Crisis); and contending with a bizarre cast of local characters, including “Half-Dead Fred” and the self-proclaimed Poet Laureate of Tarawa (a British drunkard who’s never written a poem in his life).
With The Sex Lives of Cannibals, Maarten Troost has delivered one of the most original, rip-roaringly funny travelogues in years—one that will leave you thankful for staples of American civilization such as coffee, regular showers, and tabloid news, and that will provide the ultimate vicarious adventure.
Customer Reviews:
A great escape.......2007-10-02
I am well known among my friends as someone who is bored with any book that is not, often painfully so, educational about the world around me. I don't read to fall asleep, I read and then cannot sleep. This is one of the first books in ages that not only kept my attention without stabbing pains of guilt and dispair but literally had me laughing out loud. It was a nice break from my books of Rwanda, Burma, the U.S. Economy etc etc...
Not so good.......2007-09-17
I thought the book was boring and didn't even finish it. Something was lacking there to draw the reader along through the story.
Drifting through life.......2007-09-15
I read this book on two separate levels: a travelogue by someone for whom life in this part of the world was a complete culture shock, and as a sad reminder of the legacy of colonialism in the Pacific. I enjoyed much of the writing: Mr Troost combines good observational skills with an ability to see humour in much of what he observed. Importantly, Mr Troost can laugh at himself and this is what saves this book from being a self-indulgent memoir.
There are some wonderful anecdotes of life in Kiribati, from the perspective of an American visitor, and some poignant reminders of life and culture prior to colonial exploitation.
The book is worth reading - especially by those who entertain romantic notions about life in the Pacific. For those who seek to understand the people or the politics of the region, other sources will be needed.
Jennifer Cameron-Smith
Hilarious and Poignant.......2007-08-31
Maarten Troost's The Sex Lives of Cannibals is many things: educational, poignant, unbelievable at times, and always hilarious. Troost tells his tale of moving to a very remote island in the Pacific when his girlfriend accepts an aid job on Kiribati; to say they didn't precisely know what they were getting into is a bit of an understatement. Maarten goes along, planning on writing the world's greatest novel and instead finding out how the twentieth century has dumped on this beautiful atoll, leaving its citizens trying to make lives out of very little and making the incredible the norm. Along the way he experiences pigs on runways, sharks, sailing between islands amid 25 foot swells, native dancing, an abundance of dogs, World War 2 relics, fish to eat everyday, body surfing, and the Macarena.
Troost has a wonderful way with words, and he pulls you in immediately. His style makes you feel as though you're sitting in the room with him as he recounts stories sometimes so fantastic you find yourself not believing them. He intersperses the book with chapters of actual facts about Kiribati, an area of the world that apparently I'm not alone in knowing almost nothing about. I found myself laughing out loud so often at his descriptions that I know I was bothering my husband as he tried to sleep.
This is a relatively short, fun book that is way more than just a memoir or a piece of non-fiction. While it is indeed hilarious, it's also packed with situations that are just unbelievable for the twentieth and twenty first centuries. In the last few chapters, Troost and his girlfriend move back to the States and have trouble readjusting to the fast-paced life, and I'm afraid I'm going to have trouble readjusting to my narrower view of the world since Troost has introduced me to the gorgeous culture of an isolated Pacific island. Give yourself a treat and indulge in this one. Highly recommended!
Fantastic and incredibly realistic.......2007-07-24
I grew up on Tarawa in the 1970's when it was still a British Colony and my parents were working out there. This book brought back so many wonderful and horrible memories and is so very true to life. My family still operate a 'bubuti' system amongst ourselves!
I am incredibly saddened that such a beautiful place has become so squalid and rundown. As a child the island was so safe we were allowed to run wild. Crime was so low that theft of a bottle of my father's whisky was the main item on the news for 2 days - and there was no Macarena...
Troost captures the warmth, kindness and humour of the I-Kiribati perfectly. His descriptions of the deprivations - water, electricity and the incredible heat (and no air conditioning) and lack of food are perfect. My mother remembers taking my [...]sister to an UK supermarket on a visit home and her announcing loudly "Look mummy, the ship has come in" at the sight of full shelves!
Best book I've read in ages - hilariously funny and a real eyeopener to anyone who believes that Blue Lagoon is the reality of life on a pacific island.
