    Book Description

The Artist as Producer reshapes our understanding of the fundamental contribution of the Russian avant-garde to the development of modernism. Focusing on the single most important hotbed of Constructivist activity in the early 1920s--the Institute of Artistic Culture (INKhUK) in Moscow--Maria Gough offers a powerful reinterpretation of the work of the first group of artists to call themselves Constructivists. Her lively narrative ranges from famous figures such as Aleksandr Rodchenko to others who are much less well known, such as Karl Ioganson, a key member of the state-funded INKhUK whose work paved the way for an eventual dematerialization of the integral art object.
Through the mining of untapped archives and collections in Russia and Latvia and a close reading of key Constructivist works, Gough highlights fundamental differences among the Moscow group in their handling of the experimental new sculptural form--the spatial construction--and of their subsequent shift to industrial production. The Artist as Producer upends the standard view that the Moscow group's formalism and abstraction were incompatible with the sociopolitical imperatives of the new Communist state. It challenges the common equation of Constructivism with functionalism and utilitarianism by delineating a contrary tendency toward non-determinism and an alternate orientation to process rather than product. Finally, the book counters the popular perception that Constructivism failed in its ambition to enter production by presenting the first-ever case study of how a Constructivist could, and in fact did, operate within an industrial environment. The Artist as Producer offers provocative new perspectives on three critical issues--formalism, functionalism, and failure--that are of central importance to our understanding not only of the Soviet phenomenon but also of the European vanguards more generally.

The authors of Growing Up Catholic have fully 17 names among them. Here goes: Mary Jane Frances Cavolina Meara, Jeffrey Allen Joseph Stone, Maureen Anne Teresa Kelly, and Richard Glen Michael Davis. If this merits a smirk, you'll love Growing Up Catholic. First published in 1985, this classic collection of essays, games, lists, quizzes, drawings, and photos inspired two sequels (More Growing Up Catholic and Still Catholic After All These Years) and has now been updated for the millennium. ("After all, let's not forget where this whole millennium thing came from," the Introduction explains.) The many new features of this edition include "Que Sera, Sera: Who Will Be the Next Pope?" and "Ansubstantiation-tray: Can't Anybody Here Speak Latin?" Growing Up Catholic is bubbly but never blasphemous--just irreverent enough to be interesting, but not so irreverent as to be an inappropriate confirmation gift. --Paul Power

                                5 out of 5 stars once a catholic...................2007-08-16

This is a funny accurate account of the all the trials and tribulations of being in a Catholic school, especially in the 60's and 70's.

3 out of 5 stars Who is the joke on?.......2006-09-18

I read through this book twice, and it is very, very funny. Many memories were brought back and it reminded me that even our religous practices can be made of fun of in the name of innocent humor.

But then I realized that something was missing. This book didn't just poke fun at the Catholic faith. It dismissed it. I was expecting the authors to end the book with a disclaimer -"even though we found great humor in certain aspects of our faith - It is a faith built on Jesus Christ. And we believe the Holy Spirit continues to lead the Church as was promised 2000 years ago". No disclaimer. No confirmation of their faith in Christ's Church despite the "humorous" aspects.

Imagine reading an explanation of American life from a former American now living in Europe as a socialist or a former American now serving Al-Qaeda. You can't help but feel they left the "American Way" because they just didn't "get it". That's how I felt after the second reading of this book.

Thus read this book for some funny laughs and good memories. Just don't forget billions of Catholics love and follow Jesus thanks to their upbringing.

4 out of 5 stars Growing up Catholic.......2005-02-22

Based on the book I find that my experience was not as unique as I had thought. The book captures the essence of growing up Catholic, the acceptance without thought of the teachings of the church, the Baltimore Catechism and the church cultures were beyond belief. My children who have not been the beneficiary of a Parochial education look at me with wonder as if to say "what were you thinking". It was a grand trip down memory lane and would recommend it to anyone who was a child of the 50s and 60s going through Parochial School.

5 out of 5 stars The Funniest Book I Have Ever Read.......2002-07-03

You really do have to be a Catholic to truly appreciate this wonderful book. As a Catholic schoolgirl entering her eleventh year in Catholic school (scary, isn't it?), I can fully relate to this. I honestly don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my entire life.

You know what the funniest thing about this book is? Everything in it is true...from the different kinds of nuns to Father What-a-Waste (sigh); from the description of mortal and venial sins to the purchasing of pagan babies. Well, they don't sell pagan babies anymore, but they did in my mother's day.

Even a staunch Catholic like my grandmother would have to crack a smile at the descriptive, colorful language and the abfab portrayal of the sometimes ridiculous traditions of the world's most scandalous, under-fire church. This book is a must-read for all Roman Catholics, practicing or no.

                                5 out of 5 stars 11th Commandment - Read This Book!.......2002-01-04

I laughed all the way through this, which must be a sin! If you are a Catholic like me you will remember everything this book talks about. In fact, I had forgotten a lot of it. I'm a little surprised it did not go into Knights of Columbus Halls (a.k.a. - the Catholic bar) and Bingo (a.k.a. - Catholic gambling) a little more. But heck, they sure covered everything else. I have to go now, I have to finish crossing myself and say a few dozen hail Mary's.

                                Book Description

Michael Talaga grew up as Catholic as they come. A product of parochial school, he was well versed in the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church and was careful to obey them. He was a Catholic's Catholic. But then he met Jesus face to face. The screen between the confessor and the Priest was removed, and Michael's life changed forever. The God I Thought I Knew is the book you've been waiting for. Without being offensive, it clearly delineates the differences between Catholic doctrine and having a relationship with Jesus Christ, and does so from the point of a man who once was a devoted Catholic and now has a passion for his people.Whether you're taking a walk back through your own Catholic childhood or gaining a new understanding of the lives of the Catholics you know, you are sure to find the stories and insights of Michael Talaga amusing and challenging. Without haughtiness or pretense, he will help you to see where the Catholic doctrine differs from the Word of God and explain why his choice to follow Jesus meant a break from the only church he had ever known.

4 out of 5 stars A book I'll never hesitate to give out........2007-03-13

I can only imagine what Michael Talaga's experience was. Growing up in such a different church culture, the stories that fill out this book vividly describe situations far beyond my calm upbringing. The majority of stories are engaging and I find myself still chuckling at them weeks later.

I could not tell if Michael still considers himself Roman Catholic or not because his tone is always respectful and thoughtful. His conclusions square up with mine, but it's the journey to those conclusions that is worth the price of admission!

A Great Resource to Examine Bias and Pre-supposition for those who grew up Catholic or for anyone trying to understand people who grew up Catholic.

                                2 out of 5 stars Sad..........2006-03-11

I found Talaga's book interesting and engaging, but it also saddened me to read it. As God was calling him into a more intimate relationship, Talaga obviously misunderstood the calling and became Protestant. He also has many grave misunderstandings about Catholic theology and doctrine, as many Christians do. As the late Bishop Fulton Sheen said, "Not 100 in the United States hate the Roman Catholic Church, but millions hate what they mistakenly think that the Roman Catholic Church is."

Too bad Talaga turned his back on the church Christ established. I'll be praying that he comes home.

                                5 out of 5 stars The God I thought I knew.......2005-09-30

A fantastic read, particularly for non-catholic Christians trying to figure out where their catholic husbands and other family members are coming from. It provided me with a lot of insight into the scripting that has been imprinted into my husbands brain, why he thinks that good deeds alone will get him his ticket to heaven, and why he feels so challenged and defensive if it is suggested that he might have missed the point of Christian faith completely. The book doesn't oblige with an easy solution of course, but provides some hope and a reason to pray a bit harder.

5 out of 5 stars Tell us more, Michael..........2000-04-30

Michael Talaga's story is very interesting and very readable. Once I started it, I finished it in a couple of days--I didn't want to stop reading! As you read, you feel like you know Michael, likable at times, not so likable at others, but always honest and transparent about his life. His story about growing up Catholic, thinking that he knew all about God, to really coming to know God, is funny, warm, touching.... Read for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Catholics, a should read for everyone else........1999-07-01

Funny, relative, easy reading all describe this book. The author shares humorous experiences of life in a Catholic elementary school in the 1950s and 60s and how his upbringing eventually shaped his view of God.

The book takes the reader from elementary school, to college, to career crisis, to marital problems. It's is a great true story about an ordinary man with REAL BIG problems and a REAL BIG God who bails him out!

It's a little book with a huge message and everyone should read it.

In 1985, the Newark Catholic High School football team finished with a perfect 14-0 record and won its fourth state playoff championship. The championship was also the second in the incredible string of four-in-a-row that occurred in the mid-1980's. The 1985 season was an amazing and unexpected feat when one considers that 20 starters from the 1984 championship team were lost to graduation. The year that brought the biggest rebuilding job ever turned out to be one of the greatest.

Growing Up Green is a detailed journey of the 1985 football team from day one of summer conditioning to the post-season awards banquet. Each opposing team is discussed in detail. Play-by-play is provided for all games including the Division V semifinal thriller against Mogadore and the hard-hitting title game against Delphos Jefferson. Get a fascinating inside look at the legendary Newark Catholic football program. Experience the heartbreaks and celebrations of a group of average kids as they struggle through an incredible season and fulfill a dream. A truly inspiring story for any athlete!

Evans does a great job of sharing his memories (and those of his teammates) about the 1985 season.

I was a freshmen at Newark Catholic that year and I can remember specific incidents very well (especially the stink bombs).

But Evans does more than just share his memories- he lets the reader experience a little bit of what it must have been like to play high school football in a small town in Ohio, to win a state championship, to play for the legendary J.D. Graham, to reach a life-long goal.

I'll remember my days at NC fondly and I will never forget the magic that J.D. Graham worked with average kids. Though I never played football for the man, he probably impacted me more than any other high school teacher I did have (with the exception of Jim Grove).

5 out of 5 stars I had forgotten so much!.......2003-11-07

This was a great refresher of memories from Catholic school that I had filed away for too long! Beverly did a great job of using the details to remind us of the bigger picture --- how fortunate we are to have been educated by people so dedicated, so loving, and so faithful to God. This is an awesome tribute, and a humorous and touching light read. Thank you, BVMs! And thank you, Beverly.

5 out of 5 stars With all the various controversies. . ........2003-07-01

. . .swirling around the Catholic Church today, "Thank you, Sister" is a beautiful and refreshing change.

Neither deep theology, nor modern controversy, "Thank you, Sister" is the loving memoir of a woman who spent 8 years in Catholic grammar school in the late 1950's and early 1960's. The author credits her own loving upbringing to her own eventual decision to become a teacher herself.

There is a lot of evil in the world, and some of it is in the Church itself. This book serves as a powerful reminder that there is -- and ever has been -- far more good than evil, and that good will ultimately triumph.

                                  A heartwarming read.
