Book Description
This book consists of a comprehensive collection of ancient literary evidence on Roman art and artists, assembled together in translation and provided with linking passages to set the historical context. Its purpose is to make this evidence accessible to students who are not specialists in the classical languages or classical archaeology. The surviving evidence is limited in extent but extremely precious in quality. This volume makes virtually all of it available between one set of covers.

Book Description
A serial killer is loose in Richmond, specializing in attractive young couples whose bodies are inevitably found in the woods months later -- minus their shoes and socks. After months of exposure to all the elements, all that remains of this killer's victims has in every case left Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta unable even to determine an exact cause of death. Frustrated that her high-tech forensic skills have apparently proved useless, Kay enlists the help of and ace crime reporter and a psychic whose powers have been vouched for by the FBI.
Racing against time, Kay finds she must draw upon her own personal resources to track down a murderer skilled at eliminating every clue. All that remains to her now is her courage and intuition and the will to stop a killer before he can strike again.

Don't waste your time on this one.......2007-09-02
I picked this book up at a dollar store and was so disappointed with the story. I kept reading and waiting for something solid to happen. It didn't. I was at the end when I finally accepted the fact that the book is no good. I was so glad when I finished this and hate I wasted so much time.
All That Remains.......2007-06-12
Typically, I prefer non-fiction material to fiction, however, this series by Ms. Cornwell is well written.
The author is able to keep the reader engaged throughout the entire book; with hints here, intrigue put strategically there.
I would recommend this book, and the series, to anyone who enjoys a good suspense.
Great book.......2007-01-10
I highly recommend this book. Very well written, great story. Love the Kay Scarpetta series.

Upon examining a dead woman found in snowbound Central Park, Kay Scarpetta immediately recognizes the grisly work of Temple Gault, a bold and brilliant killer from her past. Now she must hunt down a psychopath whose string of horrible murders is leading inexorably to his ultimate prey: Scarpetta herself. Even with the help of the FBI, Scarpetta knows the endgame is hers alone to play -- and it will be played on Gault's home turf, the subway tunnels beneath New York City.
Book Description
In From Potter's Field, #1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Cornwell enters the chilling world of Virginia's Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta--and a bold, brilliant killer from her past.
Upon examining a dead woman found in snowbound Central Park, Scarpetta immediately recognizes the grisly work of Temple Brooks Gault. She soon realizes that Gault's murders are but a violent chain leading up to one ultimate kill--Scarpetta herself.

Book six of the Scarpetta tales
with no sign of a halt
Another of the sub-series
that features Temple Gault
A woman's naked in the snow
that fell on Central Park
The killer taunts the CME
by leaving his trademark
The killer kills and kills again
always one step ahead
He'll likely stop at nothing
until Kay Scarpetta's dead
A network has been compromised
Her office violated
Scarpetta has to sift the facts
to see how they're related
A hidden camera sheds some light
Upon this creepy case
The ending wraps up quickly
with a subterranean chase
This one's no triumph for the Doc
She comes across as weak
Her private life's just one big mess
and things are looking bleak
Characters drift in and out
but leave no great impression
although the author ties loose ends
she's guilty of digression
I liked the last part of the book
especially the twist
The middle's slightly boring
but it's worth it to persist

gripping.......2006-12-09
There's a crazy killer on the loose and the sicko loves the attention he is getting from Dr Kay Scarpetta. Scarpetta travels to New York City and Hilton Head Island in this thriller. The sicko also teases her with some visits to Richmond, and even uses her credit card. I found this to be an above average Patricia Cornwell book. Lots of action, lots of autopsy detail... very entertaining. The only part I found odd was the army connection.
Gault at Fault.......2006-07-07
Did you ever read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand? Few people have, because it's long and it's dull, something about Rand's philosophy of man against society seen through the eyes of John Gault.
Now Ayn Rand ends up in Inspector Penn's bookcase and Temple Gault ends up with a scalpel in his thigh, riding the rails, so to speak.
Usually, authors describe villains who we come to dislike. Cornwell's villain, this coke-snorting psychopath, ends up surrounded by all the forces known to man, in New York City anyway. The FBI, the city police, the transit police, you name it. I ended up rooting for the guy to escape, that's how repelled I was by Cornwell's climax, or was it an anti-climax? Was it nothing more than a severed femoral artery?
I did learn something from this book: the subways in New York are confusing and homeless people can sleep there. Oh, and I learned that computers have evolved a lot since this book was written.
So to sum up, I don't know which book was more boring, this one or Atlas Shrugged, but neither one is really worth reading, I'd say. Diximus.
Good but incomplete.......2006-02-09
"Cruel and Unusual" was my first Scarpetta book, and when I looked on the jacket of "From Potter's Field" and saw that it would deal with Temple Gault again, I decided to read it next, hoping to see this killer get what he deserves.
Most of this book was pretty engrossing, even though I did have some gripes. Kay's affair with Benton is disappointing to me since she seems to pride herself on "doing the right thing." Lucy was insufferable in this one. She was younger in "Cruel and Unusual" and I could overlook her idiosyncracies, but she's older now and needs to get a grip - she almost seems to resent or dislike Kay at times but then turns around and loves her again. Also, Lucy's genius IQ and role as an FBI computer program writer who busts crime with her keyboard are beyond corny.
The best part IMO was the scene in the morgue, as others have said. I don't think I would have been able to put the book down if a tornado had ripped through my house while I was reading that part!
It is difficult to believe that a crazy guy high on cocaine most of the time could always be one step ahead of the police and FBI, brutally murdering people right under their noses and getting away with it.
But then the worst came. The ending. Wham, bam, it's over, with Temple Gault's fate implied but none of the juicy details I was hungering for. There wasn't even a page break - one second we're in the subway tunnels of New York, the next we're flying over Potter's Field. Huh?
Very Dissapointing.......2006-01-15
From Potters Field is one Patricia Cornwell's worst book she has written. It's not the characters, nope. It's not the writing that is wrong. It's the story that makes the book disappointing.
Temple Gault has struck again. This time we know this for sure. Both the readers and Kay Scarpetta do. Someone from Lucy's past is also back. The problem with this book is that Gault is not a strong enough villain to carry this book. He is not scary or very threatening. It's not exiting. Partly because we never get into his head we are always inside Scarpetta's. Even if Cornwell did venture inside his head I'm not sure if it would be that exiting. For a killer on the loose plot its very weak, of coarse the forensics are very good and original. But for the most part a very disappointing Scarpetta novel.

Book Description
1920. The novel begins: In the living-room of the Dreamerie, his home on Tyee Head, Hector McKaye, owner of the Tyee Lumber Company and familiarly known as The Laird, was wont to sit in his hours of leisure, smoking and building castles in Spain-for his son Donald. Here he planned the acquisition of more timber and the installation of an electric-light plant to furnish light, heat, and power to his own town of Port Agnew; ever and anon he would gaze through the plate-glass windows out to sea and watch for is ships to come home. Whenever The Laird put his dreams behind him, he always looked seaward. In the course of time, his home-bound skippers, sighting the white house on the headland and knowing that The Laird was apt to be up there watching, formed the habit of doing something that pleased their owner mightily. When the northwest trades held steady and true, and while the tide was still at the flood, they would scorn the services of the tug that went out to meet them and come ramping into the bight, all their white sails set and the glory of the sun upon them; as they swept past, far below The Laird, they would dip his house-flag-a burgee, scarlet-edged, with a fir tree embroidered in green on a field of white-the symbol to the world that here was a McKaye ship. And when the house-flag fluttered half-way to the deck and climbed again to the masthead, the soul of Hector McKaye would thrill. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty or faded. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

Tough Love Sawmill Style.......2001-02-07
Son of Scottish tough guy sawmill baron goes off to college in the East, incidentally doubling Dad's money by investing in forestland and paying for college with the profits (thus handing Dad back all the college money upon graduation), then coming back to try to measure up to Dad.
Son does it, along the way filling the redemption theme of the book by falling in love with the woman of bad repute who lives at the edge of proper sawmill society with her illegitimate child.
Contains fistfights and other Northwest bygone era male behaviors, and includes vivid descriptions of father blowing off a cannon each morning to start the day (lives on a cliff, so it's cool).
By the end of the book, Son is Dad's boy, and everybody better just accept the wife he has chosen. Wife experiences this act of grace and adoption with gratefulness, and turns her own brand of toughness and love into supporting Son.
Good themes, basic story, blow off the cannon, take over the dynasty.
Then put the book down and return to your own comparatively miserable data-entry existence, buoyed by this outdated but invigorating book.

Book Description
Now in its 16th year, The Bathroom Reader — which seems to have replaced the tie as the most popular Father's Day gift idea — has become a movement, with satisfying, easily digested new selections sure to wipe away bathroom boredom. Handily arranged by length — “short” (a quick read), “medium” (1 to 3 pages), and “long” (for those extended visits) — the book covers everything from Americana to The Name Game to Pop Science and Wordplay. Readers can learn the origins of superglue, sample news stories about underwear, read about animals famous for 15 minutes, and learn of unknown heroes of the Wild West. This broad assortment eliminates ennui while wittily educating readers trapped in airports, cars, buses, or lavatories.
Customer Reviews:
Worth even more time than a bathroom visit.......2006-06-29
This one was so engrossing that I wound up reading it at length, in bed. There's just so much trivia in it, and its tone is light and witty. As with all the Bathroom Readers I've bought, it's worthy of a re-read.
Great potty book........2005-09-03
The Bathroom Reader Institute has yet again delievered a fantastic, humorous, and great read for the most important seat in the house.
Everyone should have a reader.......2005-03-02
I think everyone should have a bathroom reader. It is so full of fun and interesting facts, I started taking it out of the bathroom and reading it on the train to work. Since the tidbits are so short, it doesn't take much concentration and you can easily pick up anywhere in the book. My husband and I have a great time telling eachother about the things we read in the book.
Great reading in or out of the bathroom.......2004-07-04
The 16th edition was my first purchase of the series, and now I am probably going to get many more of the books in the series because these are great ways to spend relatively short periods of time and learn so much interesting stuff at the same time. As a bonus, every page has what the authors call "running feet" which is little tidbits of trivia, such as "When a person is dying, hearing is the last sense to go. Sight is the first."
Also, since there are over 500 pages in the recent editions, there is plenty of material to read and one won't finish the book all that quickly, especially if it is used in the bathroom alone.
The topics in the 16th edition cover just about everything imaginable, from how rock bands got their names, urban legends, history of the bagel, to interesting facts and trivia about hurricanes and everything in between. I would think this book would be a great gift for someone in a hospital and I would think it might make a great travel companion while sitting in airports or hotels, though its size and weight makes it more difficult to pack in carry-on luggage.
I wish every doctor and dentist had a set of these books in their waiting rooms! It would make those long waits go by much faster and much more enjoyably. And how about automobile repair waiting rooms? They would be ideal places to have these books for customers to read as they wait. The relatively short length and variety of the entries would be perfect in those environments.
If you love trivia or obscure yet interesting facts about the amazing world around us, you will probably enjoy this book and series. It makes spending the time in "the smallest room in the house" a lot more enjoyable and educational.
A Truly Moving Experience!.......2003-11-23
As usual, The Bathroom Reader's Press has provided food for thought and and thought for digestion. An excellent gift for the person who has everything (the toilet is the great equalizer). I even give one to my doctor every year.
An informative and entertaining read.
