Customer Reviews:
essential.......2007-01-03
This book is essential for people who is interested about visual arts. Anne Hollander knowledge about clothes and its interaction with Art is impressive.
On the other hand, I'm spanish but I could understand everything: this book is easy to read and understand for not english people.
A triple entendre.......1999-04-09
1. Seing through the clothes to the underlying anatomy and how this time specific anatomy was handled. Pregnancy an interesting challenge.
2. Seeing through the clothes the statement clothes are making. Glory, nobility, godliness, but mostly invidious comparisons in my judgement.
3. Through the clothes just seeing. Until this book I had no idea how limited my visual apparatus was. The impoverished Blessed Family clothed in well draped woolens going at fifty dollars a yard, never something out of Filene's.
The book is a palatable reductionism of civilisation with the usual shortcomings, but the pschological impact is unique. No book has transformed me in a more fundamental way.
An Analysis of Changing Ideals of Beauty.......1998-12-30
Hollander brings an art historian's eye to this survey of the history of Western European costume. Her interest lies less in historical detail than in the ways in which the governing esthetic of what makes a man handsome, or a woman beautiful, has changed over time and in how those changes have been reflected in costume and art. Occasionally, Hollander badgers the reader with a personal theory that is not adequately supported by the information she provides in the text, but most of the book is informative and thought-provoking. If you already have a general knowledge of historic costume, you will find much to interest you in Hollander's book.
The history of dress is made interesting by Anne Hollander........1998-04-24
This book is an enjoyable read on the history of clothing. I found this book in the midst of researching my thesis on the history of Italian Renaissance clothing. Hollander makes some intersesting observations of the effect Hollywood has on the general publics visual perceptions of various historical periods. Although she has a lot to say not everything is very well researched. If your intent is scholarly research, take everything with a grain of salt. If your intent is entertainment this is an excellent history of clothing. I very much enjoyed reading this book. If you are looking into the history of dress I also suggest a book by Elizabeth Birbari, Dress in Renaissance Italy. The Birbari is very hard to find, but well worth it once it is found.

Book Description
"Jackie really loved these exquisite paintings. They bring back the magic, grace, and elegance of the famous travels abroad made by the µuncrowned queen of the world.'" --Letitia Baldrige
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis--American icon, archetype of style and grace, symbol of strength and beauty--captivated audiences, grand and common, around the world for decades. Her majestic elegance is captured in a special gift book, Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad, by French painter, illustrator, and friend of the First Lady, Jacqueline DuhOme.
When President and Mrs. Kennedy traveled to Paris in 1961, Mlle DuhOme painted scenes from their historic trip. She continued to paint as she accompanied the First Lady and her sister on a later tour of India, Pakistan, Rome, and London.
Now these whimsical and imaginative paintings make their first appearance together in this charming volume, along with line drawings, anecdotal recollections, and historic photographs from Mlle DuhOme's collection.

Extraordinary.......2003-12-10
I interviewed Jacqueline Duheme when she was promoting this exquisite book, and one thing remains in my mind that she said about "The Grand Dame, Jacqueline" - that she could have been a painting woman!!!
Utterly charming and delightful.......2003-01-16
As an ardent admirer of Mrs. Kennedy for the past 40 years, I have read every book on her that I could get my hands on. "Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad" is a refreshing change from the repetitive narratives and recycled photos that are the mainstay of so many other books about her life. Ms. Duheme's illustrations are elegant and sumptuous but also embrace a childlike purity and simplicity which capture the essence of Mrs. Kennedy's persona and mystique. The commentary has the simple charm of a beautifully written children's book. It is obvious why Mrs. Kennedy chose Ms. Duheme to accompany her on her more memorable trips abroad as First Lady. A truly enchanting book.
For Fashionistas Who Like to Travel.......2001-11-16
Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad is an adorable little book filled with colorful Fauvist-like illustrations. Anyone who likes Laura Stoddart's simple-chic illustrations for Kate Spade will probably enjoy this book. Fans of the recent exhibition at the Met that highlighted Jackie's White House clothes may appreciate it too. The commentary is kept to a minimum and black and white photos from Mrs. Kennedy's travels are included, but the focus is on French artist Duheme's amusing miniature paintings that capture Jackie in all those great pink sleeveless dresses and crisp suits in Paris, India, London and Italy.
As a side note: Duheme and Jacqueline Kennedy became friends who shared similar painting styles, and Duheme was invited to Cape Cod to give the First Lady an art lesson.
A delightful book for Jackie fans.......2000-04-04
"Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad" is a beautiful book. The illustrations are lovely to look at, and the book is fun to read. A good choice for anyone to add to their library; especially recommended for those interested in the Kennedys and Jackie in particular. Evokes the fun mood of Jackie's scrapbook written with her sister Lee, "One Special Summer".
An adult picture book.......2000-03-14
This book has wonderful pictures that captures the "facts" from actual photographs and transforms them into scenes of "fantasy". I really enjoyed the background information that accompanies each picture. A real treat of Jackie fans.

All the usual suspects and a few surprises too.......2002-01-27
A good over view of how watercolor caught on in America and rose to the standard of English work in that medium. Worth getting for the chapter on William Trost Richards, who really ought to be part of an American Watercolor Triumverate, along with Homer and Sargent. There are out of print monographs on Richards but this seems to be the best place to see examples of his work if you can't get your hands on them.

Wonderful Book.......2002-06-03
This watercolor book is a favorite of mine. The author describes and shows ways to do watercolor for everyone from the beginner to advanced painter. He gives demos that are interesting, informative and fun to do. I have used this book as reference over and over again and always will.
Natural Watercolour.......2001-04-30
As a returning art student this book is excellent. The author gives clear concise information as to the colors used to achieve the desired effect, as well as, wonderful step by step easy to follow guidelines. I have many books but none that have helped me more with color, composition, glazing and the delight of watercolor. This book is a must book for the beginner as well as the intermediate and advanced painter.
Book Description
Many facets of Oxford are recorded here, as Graham Byfield strolls with his sketchpad through college gateways, courtyards and gardens, along broad streets and narrow alleyways, into great ceremonial buildings and cosy medieval pubs. In few cities in the world can such an array of architectural treasures be viewed within so compact an area, ideally suited to the visitor on foot. Along the way, with a few pencil strokes and splashes of colour, Byfield captures passing scenes of student and city life enacted before one of the finest architectural backdrops in England.

More good stories.......2007-08-02
One of the best first hand accounts of the civil rights movement I have read. There were things in this book you will not find in the history books. A must read
A book about the REAL heroes/heroines of Civil Rights.......2003-04-11
A wonderful piece of work, Raines merely interviews the people from the wide and varied perspectives of the movement and gives them free rein to tell "their story" "their way" managing within this framework to lace a compelling and interesting plot around some states and some history that time and justice seemed to have forgotten.
Seven years Raines' junior, I grew up white and a carpetbagger (from the North. . .)in Augusta, GA and I now have context for stories I was told. One among many, I knew the Hamilton Holmes' car story told by the KA frat guys when they were adults, still bragging but also, "they didn't really mean it."
I am still quite mystified how a Birmin'ham boy, bragging that his Alabama ancestors fought for the Union, lived to tell about it.
I highly recommend "Fly Fishing . . ." as well. IT's NOT ABOUT THE FISH. Great read.
He thought it was tough being the baby brother; I can only suggest that he try getting fishing privileges as the Irish twin younger sister.
One of the best books about the Civil Rights Wars!.......2002-03-30
This book is on the list of 100 best or most influential books I've ever read--mainly because it is observant, honest, humble and direct, with no political agendas and no effete overtones. This is a title well worth re-examining some 20 years after publication. It can be browzed through at random, with something startling jumping at you on virtually every page. Or, it can be read straight through. It's quite a white-knuckle event. Many books have been written on the subject, but there's something quietly compelling about this one. Raines is one of our great journalists. This is a good way to become acquainted with him, in the days before he became elevated to one of the most prestigious newspaper jobs in the world.

Extraordinary account of an extraordinary time........2001-09-02
Howell Raines is the new executive editor for "The New York Times," but he is at heart a writer. Both strengths come to the fore in this excellent book on the American civil rights movement. As an oral history, it necessarily contains first-hand accounts of dozens and dozens of the main (and not-so-important) players in the movement. Raines does a fine and fair job of putting their stories into essentially chronological order and editing or moving bits and pieces only where necessary to ensure good flow for the reader. There were a few names I had heard of before, but many were new to me. There are surprises in this book. While we mostly associate the civil rights movement with the deep south in the mid-1960s, it actually got its start in Chicago in the 1940s when groups of people protested with the first lunch-counter sit-ins (when a manager came out to scold one of these groups with the flat, "We don't serve colored folks here," one quick-witted participant fired back, "That's OK, we don't eat 'em!"). Another revelation was the tensions between the older blacks and the younger black student generation. The older blacks, while not happy with segregation, sometimes felt that at least everyone knew where they stood with it--while the younger generation was champing at the bit to get out there and change the world overnight. Finally, it was interesting to read that many of the original founders of the movement were inspired far more by Gandhi than by Martin Luther King, Jr. A number of them express their opinion that King--while undoubtedly important and absolutely essential once the movement got underway--was not himself so convinced as to the value of a) the movement itself and b) non-violent protest--many of this friends and co-workers say here that he continued to espouse it only because eventually, he felt he had been thoroughly and unmistakeably identified with it. Although I was surprised that neither Coretta Scott King nor the Reverend Jesse Jackson were inteviewed for Mr. Raines' book, their absence is my only quibble with what is otherwise an enormously valuable and terrifically readable history.
An empowering book to read!.......2001-05-06
It was difficult to stop reading the book, once I started. This collection of interviews with the idealists, the activists, the real "fighters" in the civil rights movement in the 50s and 60s -- and the people who stood against them -- is an empowering, educational read. Truly, this book is a must for those interested in learning more about the civil rights struggle (a struggle that continues until today), and about movements for peace and social justice in general.
