Bugeja is the former poetry columnist for Writer's Digest , as well as a poet in his own right, and he's assembled an invaluable package of information for the bard who knows verse can't be taught -- it can't -- but wants the goods on organizing and publicizing readings, compiling chapbooks, submitting to magazines, negotiating with editors, etc. It may not be art, but it's vital, because, as Bugeja notes in his preface, "... I stopped believing good work speaks for itself... (it) speaks for itself in front of the right editor." Here's how to find her.

4 out of 5 stars a must for aspiring poets.......2001-08-13

There's no question about it: creating a poem is not a simple task. It requires patience and dedication in order to develop poetry that everyone would love to read. That is why this book is an essential item for anyone who wants to significantly improve their creative writing skills. Whether your dream is to be published or you simply desire to improve your writing talent, this book becomes a necessity. Not only does this resource take away some of the fear of sending out a poem to a magazine, but it answers your most frequently asked questions on what makes a poem work.

A poet's guide is manna from heaven. Can't wait to receive mine. Giving readings is something I'm interested in and need the suggestions I know the Poet's Guide will give. Thanks Amazon for marketing great resources as well as novels.

5 out of 5 stars Very well done from a published book poet!.......2000-08-03

Wish I would have had this book before my poetry book,"BARE BREASTED HEART" was published! There is alot of really great information here not only on the art of writing poetry but how and where to look for publication.

However, what I enjoyed most was the information on performing! Many new writers just do not fully understand how important it is to get out and show/perform your work. I used to say, "I write so I do not have to speak!" in retrospect I have never had to speak out or read from my books as I have since they have become published.

Further to sell ones books, author events, book signings and the sharing of one's written word is vital. Not to long ago I was asked to speak at a "MEET THE AUTHORS" event. I read several poems from the above mentioned title, this made the difference from a few sales to a few hundred sales! I only wish I had the insight and the knowledge this title brings prior to learning on my own and learning as you go.

I strongly recommend this book for the poet who not only seeks publication but also truly wants to share their written works with an audience!

5 out of 5 stars lots of important info all in one book.......1999-04-22

I have no idea where I would have gotten all the information supplied by this book. I don't think I would have ever even heard of a poetry slam or a poetry workshop. The book covers various aspects of publishing and performing. I don't think one can get that information anywhere else. Other books tell you how to how to perform or how to publish. This one tells you how to perform, publish and even edit one's poetry. A how-to on what to do after the poem is written. It is EVEN written for various experiences of poets. That is really amazing. Bugeja provides a project for each level at the end of each chapter to have you put the new information into practice.

5 out of 5 stars Tired of papering your walls with rejection slips?.......1997-10-03

Bugeja has writen the definitive aid for "budding Poet Laureates" in this simple and direct guide to getting published. He covers everything the aspiring poet needs to know, from form to submission to copyright law, all in a witty voice-of-experience. This one's even small enough to tuck into a corner of the briefcase (just in case you want to keep your Walter Mitty existance as a Poet secret from your CEO pals!)!

    Book Description

A unique exhibition in a book, presenting challenging art that addresses the place and function of performance in the contemporary world.

Art Works: An exciting new series celebrating the vitality and diversity of art in the twenty-first century. If all the world is a stage, then each of us is a performer. Every day, we act out individual roles and take part in private and collective rituals handed down by society. In our relationships with others, we hide behind masks and assumed personae; and when we interact with the objects, spaces, and environments around us, we follow established patterns of behavior set down by history and convention, playing out performances everywhere we turn. In such a world, it is no surprise that the line between art and life is sometimes blurred.

Arranged into themed "rooms," this book reflects a wide variety of artistic attitudes and practices. Some artists present collaborators as the living, performing objects of their work, while others turn the audience into the main protagonists in the creative process. Some artists transform themselves through disguise or by altering their surroundings in order to perform a new reality, while others make everyday items into art by changing their function or context. Some artists explore the storytelling capacity of art, but others present only cryptic fragments that leave the viewer to complete the narrative. Where some question the permanence of art by producing ephemeral or short-lived pieces, others leave traces of their actions, and yet others seek to freeze time in highly dramatized tableaux or hyperrealistic sculptures. For some artists, performance offers the possibility of leaving the gallery environment altogether and enacting art in public, on the street, for everybody.

All of the artists in this book use art to puzzle out the complicated ways in which performance plays a part in our daily experiences. All of them help us understand the world in which we live. 280 illustrations, 232 in color.

This book is wonderful for young girls with an interest in ballet. The illustrations by Linda Griffith are beautiful and bring the book to life for the young child. It is one of my 4 year olds favorites. As an adult reader, I found it a beautifully told and illustrated version of a classic. Brava, to the writer!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Little Ones.......2005-10-28

My daughter took interest in this book at only about 3 months old. The silly photos of babies with things on their heads made her giggle and squeel. She especially loved the "puppy dog" page, cause she has a similar dog toy. Sometimes she would want to put things on my head or on her head while we read this book. But now she is 14 months old, and she has lost interest in this book, so I think it is more captivating to smaller babies.

5 out of 5 stars Best choice for an infant's first book.......2001-10-30

This book held my son's interest (especially in the car) from 3 months to 1 year and then some. He is a toddler now and "reads" the book to his baby sister. I give it as a gift to friends who have babies because there is nothing better than a silent object that holds your infant's interest and stimulates his/her curiosity. You can't go wrong with this board book for very young children.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice.......2000-03-27

I find that my 8 month old daughter really enjoys looking at this book. We sit and read the book together. The pictures are bold and clear, with the other pages bright in color. All the words are very bold and easy to read. I would recommend this book along with "I LOVE COLORS". They are great books for your young child to read by themselves.

4 out of 5 stars Great for quiet moments.......1999-11-30

My one-year old son loves babies and is facsinated by this book. He will even leave his noise-maker toys in favor of flipping through the baby photos -- great when the parents need a quiet moment!!

My 14 mo. old is so NOT interested in this book. I think this book is appropriate for the under 10 month crowd. She is just too advanced for it and the photography is not so special--I almost ordered the whole series based on the 4 and 5 start reviews, and I'm glad I saved the money. I prefer Penny Gentien (sp?) baby photo books.

            5 out of 5 stars Huggable & Lovable.......2000-04-06

Once again, hats off to Margaret Miller for another beautiful book. This book captures young toddlers with their favorite teddy bears. Ms. Miller does a fantastic job with using bright colors and bold pictures within her books. Both of these seem to help catch my 9 month old daughters eyes. She just loves to turn the pages and talk to the babies. Within this book, it shows kids playing peekaboo, hugging, sharing secrets and falling a sleep with their teddy bears. It is a must have for your young childs book collection. We would also like to recommend "I Love Colors", and "What's on my Head?" both by Ms. Miller. We hope that you and your child enjoy this book as much as we do.

Toddlers will love moving the shaped pages back and forth to make each picture's baby face change. A reflecting surface on the last page serves as a mirror, and encourages kids to make their own funny and expressive faces as they learn about opposites. This amusing little book focuses on Baby's senses, contrasting different baby faces for good and bad sounds, good and bad tastes, and good and bad smells. (Ages: Infant to 3)

This is a book that allows a baby to show his feelings, tastes good, tastes bad; sounds good & sounds bad; smells good and smells bad, My baby enjoyed turning the pages and looking at the expressions of the face of the baby in the book. I think it enables my baby to identify with the baby in the book and shows him that other babies sometimes have the same reactions as him when things taste bad for example. At the last page, there is a mirror where my baby identifies his eyes, ears ,nose, mouth and he never fails to smile and kiss that page when we reach there. Certainly one of his favourite books.

                Book Description

Why do some people retain cute baby-talk names for their relatives (like "Num-Num" and "Pee-Paw") well into middle age? How should a reasonable person respond when Olivia Newton-John sings, "Have you never been mellow?" Who's responsible for the sorry state of men's fashion, and is it the same guy who invented the jerkin? Is there any future in being a Midwesterner? Can you really enjoy your lunch when the restaurant is decorated to look like an African plain? How come women keep dozens of bottles and jars of moisturizers, unguents, and lotions around -- all of them half empty?

In more than 50 hilarious all-new essays, one of America's brightest young humorists -- the head writer and on-air host of the legendary TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000 -- finds the fun in all aspects of the human condition, no matter how absurd. Join Mike Nelson on an angst-filled visit to a health spa; shopping sessions at Home Depot and Radio Shack; adventures in the very amateur musical theater; a gut-busting discourse on the history of television; ruminations on his roles as husband, father, and citizen; and much, much more.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but Not Quite Satisfying.......2007-09-26

I love Mike Nelson's writing - the style of his delivery onscreen translates seemlessly to the printed page, which is a tribute to his talent. Overall, I found "Mind Over Matters" to be a fun read. This book is a collection of essays that run the gamut of subject matter, from the decidedly bankrupt world of men's fashion to Nelson's own difficulties in musical theater, and many of them are genius (one I particularly love is his imagining what it would be like to be on Inside the Actor's Studio); however, there are some that just plain fall flat, a symptom (it seems) of overworking some jokes to death, and then kicking them over and over. For fans of Mike Nelson, this will no doubt be a treat. Those who enjoyed his novel, "Death Rat," will find much to enjoy here, as I did. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Mike Nelson's humor shines through, sometimes.......2007-07-16

Fans of MST3K will immediately recognize the brand of humor in Mind over Matters (MoM). Quirky, offbeat observational bits floating in a broth of angst, except this time the angst is aimed at life itself, not the inept gyrations of a bad movie.

While MoM comes out of the gate strong (Part One: Coping with It All is a laugh out loud riot, with apologies to my neighbors), it soon settles in and reads like an amusing memoir then shifts back to anecdotal humor then in traipses another sprinkle of Mike's life experience and so on.

As a rule, shifting gears is a good thing, especially if we're talking about a three-on-the-tree with a wonky transmission, and in a book whose premise is citation soup, it is inevitable. Variety is the spice of life, so says some unknown cadre of thing-sayers. Still, not all spices are equally tasty on all pallets.

Sure, the chapter on Mike's days as a "debt collection specialist" is a scream. But then there is a chapter in which Mike fantasizes what his life would look like if he had chosen the career path of a stodgy confirmed bachelor music teacher instead of a married wise-cracking funny man. Not as much fun as it sounds. Diminished vs. augmented notes humor is lost on me, and most people not affiliated with the marching band.

Even with its misgivings, I recommend MoM, with one codicil: skip the parts you don't like or that are aimed at someone whose life experience and interests diverge from yours.

5 out of 5 stars Mind Your Matters!.......2007-07-06

I enjoyed this the first time I read it, and I enjoy it even more the second time. If you don't laugh out loud while reading Mike's essays, especially about television, check your pulse.

                4 out of 5 stars What a treat.......2007-03-20

THIS is the Mike nelson I love (see Death Rat for the other Mike Nelson). Perfect easy reading fodder for airplanes, waiting rooms, bathrooms. Dry wit with minor cynicism

4 out of 5 stars All Mike (no 'bots).......2007-03-09

It may be a bit much to say that it was the best TV show ever, but I feel I'm on more solid ground when I assert that Mystery Science Theater 3000 was the best puppet show ever (sorry, Kukla, Fran and Ollie). During its decade-or-so run, Mike Nelson served as both a writer and as one of the stars of the show. I think it's probably safe to say that most people who want to read Mike Nelson's Mind Over Matters are MST3K fans; the question is, will these people (or those who are unfamiliar with the show) like what they read? I believe so.

In MST3K, Mike and two robots were the audience who watched bad movies and made jokes about them. In Mind Over Matters, the concept is similar, except this time, Mike is alone and what he is watching is the real world. So we get Mike's amusing observations on such topics as men's clothes, performance art, the history of television and gourmet foods. In addition, just as MST3K would have skits that broke up the movie watching, Mike gives us written parodies, such as his Scarlet Letterish "Young Master Chillingshead" or an interview with a pair of shorts. (It is a sign of how much I associate him with his MST3K character of the same name that, instead of referring to him by his last name, as I do with the authors of most books I review, I can only think of him as Mike.)

Of course, not every joke merits a guffaw or even a chuckle, but like in baseball, if you're successful a third of a time, you're a star. With that standard, and with a lot of humor on each of its 278 pages, you're sure to find this book to be quite fun (even if you've never watched MST3K).
