Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Showcase book, not much instruction.......2005-07-28

I suppose I didn't read the reviews closely enough but I was surprised that this was a showcase book. I was expecting some instruction but there is absolutely none -- at least not textually. That is not the fault of the author but I'm including this in my comment to clarify for other potential buyers. I am teaching myself design and am not at the level where I can learn just by looking at other examples. I am sure for those with formal design educations or with professional experience this book will hold much more inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars Experiential and college learning.......2004-04-18

Agree that book is a good resource for folks who are expanding their tech skill base. Unfair to trash designers who didn't "get it all" in college. 1) Have been designing myself for 20 yrs +" and I KNOW my skill base requires constant fine tuning. Luckily I enjoy learning. 2) College graphics classes have little time to teach a lot of material, now to include web, much of it conceptual. 3) Print is inherently complex because of its permanence. Have yet to meet a young designer who got the tech stuff in the classroom. That's what internships are for. "Rock on", young designers, you'll be learning forever.

4 out of 5 stars One Color.......2002-11-29

This book is a find and a great visual aide. I haven't seen a book like this since the two-color print book I bought a few years back. To the person who bought this book to learn how to set up documents in photoshop for one color printing: You should have learned how to do that in your graphic design classes in college. If you haven't taken any graphic design classes then you have no business trying to be a designer.

5 out of 5 stars One-Color Graphics.......2002-11-08

I really think this book deserves a better rating than two stars. This book shows how one color graphics can be beautiful and impactful too. This book is not a book for learning photoshop technique but for learning how to have a good layout with just one color. Person that buy this book to learn about photoshop has found a wrong book. As a graphic designer, dealing with clients want one color graphic most of the time, I find this book very useful.

2 out of 5 stars This is NOT a tutorial.......2002-10-11

If you are considering this book to learn the Photoshop techniques that would allow you to produce documents that appear multi-color but are printed with only one ink, I don't think this will be the book you want. It has a lot of lovely photos of such printed pieces, but other than tell you what software, paper and printing methods were used, there is no instruction in achieving similar results. I expected more of a training approach to teach you HOW to do it, not just show the results.

In a world packed with visual clutter, white space rules. From the classic Doyle Dane Burnbach ad that marooned a tiny Beetle in a huge expanse of blank paper to the all-white cover of the January 1995 issue of Wired magazine, white is an unparalleled attention grabber. Graphic designers prize white space for its connotation of elegance, for the clarity it lends to the printed word, and for the dramatic way it sets off photographs.

For White Graphics, Gail Deibler Finke assembled work by 61 graphic design studios in the U.S. (several of them in cities remote from the trendy coasts), Canada, Mexico, and Europe. While exemplary uses of white space (in projects ranging from annual reports to wedding announcements) make up the largest part of the book, she also devotes sections to white employed as a second or third "color" and the use of white in three-dimensional projects (packaging, airplane graphics, a TV studio set).

A few projects are conceptual standouts, like R&M Associati Grafici's poster for the France '98 World Soccer Championship, in which a field of colored dots (representing spectators in the stadium) forms the outline of the white silhouette of a soccer player. But most of the work shown on these pages is firmly in the mainstream--clean, bright, contemporary solutions that appear to satisfy the clients' needs and make the most of what are often described as small budgets.

Finke's nuts-and-bolts approach will be familiar to readers of HOW, the graphic design magazine to which she is a contributor. Too bad she didn't provide a more focused and historically minded introduction to such a fascinating topic. Happily, Stolze Design's inviting layout for the book sets off each project with plenty of white paper. --Cathy Curtis

    Book Description

White is a constant challenge for graphic designers. Creating a balance between clean, striking, and eye-catching can often pose a conflict between clients and designer: a conflict that is often solved by a good designer's ability to effectively use white, white space and negative space for dynamic effect.

White Graphics is a unique collection of current design work which will inspire designers and clients who are afraid of white, as being lackluster or boring, through its stunning presentation of innovative graphics which use white as a central design element.

5 out of 5 stars breathing room for your work.......2004-11-14

This is my current favorite resource for page layout, and I've been taking visual notes from it about how I want to lay out my portfolio. So much of what I did in studio was trying to cram as much information as possible onto presentation boards. I find this book refreshing, with much white space for some breathing room. I think that's important when somebody's sitting, pausing to hold your work in their hands, rather than standing and trying to ingest it quickly in a field of other boards trying to vie for attention.

Nature in Design cleverly juxtaposes images of things natural and man-made: an armadillo and the hooded roof of Jørn Utzon's Sidney Opera House, the Finnish woodlands and an interior by Alvar Aalto, a bird's nest and a "cocoon lounge" from the 1960s, a fish skeleton and Santiago Calatrava's Lyon Station. The photographs alone will amuse and amaze, but Alan Powers's book could also serve as an insightful, intelligent introduction to basic principles of design, which are nearly always based on or in reaction to the natural world, as those principles have shifted over time.

Drawing often surprisingly sound connections, Powers examines the patterns and forms found in nature and how man has imitated them (or attempted to do so) since the beginning of human creativity. The double helix form underlies a Renaissance staircase at Pozzo di San Patrizio in Italy; animal skins are imitated in textile designs not only for the aesthetic impact the patterns provide but because they are structurally effective; illustrations in children's books and the colors of traffic signs are conceived and designed with our natural associations to such images and colors in mind.

From the Fibonacci sequence to fractals, from the Golden Section and the spiral of a nautilus shell to the structural tension in a cobra's skin, from Sir Thomas Lipton's tree house to Alice Waters's organic revolution, from Le Corbusier's chapel at Ronchamp to the Versus line of makeup by Versace, Powers's interests are wide-ranging, his discussions thoughtful and refreshingly intricate. --Liana Fredley

    Book Description

Nature is the ultimate inspiration for artists, graphic designers, fashion designers, and interior decorators. By seeing lavish color photos of nature's influence on where we live and what we wear, it's easy to understand today's big return to natural design. You'll get to examine a saguaro cactus as a model of skyscraper engineering, an airport inspired by bat wings, and a London apartment inspired by cliff-dwelling tribes. Then you learn what influences you as, for example, you view the many natural objects that curl and coil into spirals (shells, nests, flowers, feathers, ferns, galaxies, hurricanes, the DNA molecule). Or, ask yourself why broccoli forms a fractal. Or, how a bird's feather makes a perfect kind of clothing.

The fourth book in Megan McDonald's wonderfully goofy Judy Moody series will leave fans wondering whether the most irrepressible third-grader in Class 3T just might have ESP. (That's either Extra Special Powers, or Extra-Special Skink Powers--in the case of skink-hunting with Judy's brother Stink.)

Our soon-to-be-psychic heroine slurps down seven bowls of cereal one morning before finding what she seeks: "A ring! A silver ring with an oogley center. A mood ring!" Testing out her possibly prescient ring-powers, though, requires all sorts of experimentation--and working through some "burnt-toast" black moods before transforming completely into "Madame M for Moody."

Judy remains her ebullient self throughout this fourth installment, despite "a blucky old math-test," a run-in with her self-assured rival from the last book ("Jessica Finch probably ate fractions for breakfast: 1/4 glass of orange juice, 1/2 piece of toast, 3/4 jar of strawberry jelly!"), and a spelling test that doesn't quite produce the grade she predicts. ("Judy didn't see why tor-tee-yah had any l's at all. And zig and zag sure seemed like two words to her. Who wrote this dictionary anyway? Mrs. Merriam and Mr. Webster were going to hear from her.")

But by far the biggest surprise that Judy Moody struggles to predict is what a visit from the mysterious crayon lady Ms. Tater might really mean. And why is Mr. Todd acting so weird? Could her predictions prove prophetic once again? Might there really be little Tater-Todds in her teacher's future? (Ages 6 to 10) --Paul Hughes

          Book Description

"This is a great choice for first-chapter-book readers, especially those already acquainted with Judy."—BOOKLIST

Judy Moody ate one, two, three bowls of cereal. No prize.
She poured four, five, six bowls of cereal. Nothing. Seven.
          Out fell the Mystery Prize.

Judy definitely has a mood for every occasion. And now she has a mood ring to prove it! The mood ring's Extra Special Powers have put Judy in a predicting mood, and her outrageous predictions have everyone wondering if Judy really is psychic. According to "Madame M" (for Moody), the Toad Pee Club's long-lost mascot will reappear, Judy will earn the coveted Thomas Jefferson tricorn-hat sticker for "Great Job, Good Thinking"—and love may be the real reason behind her teacher's new eyeglasses. Will Judy's fortune-telling adventures put kids in a very Judy Moody mood? (Signs point to yes!)

This book has big writing and is easy to read. I liked this book because it is funny and interesting. Judy is always fighting with her little brother "Stink". I would not like to be like Judy because she is too moody and annoys people. My Dad says I am moody sometimes. I hope I am not as moody as Judy but it is good fun to read about her.
