Book Description
This beautiful book focuses on Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. Beginning in 1902, Tiffany (1848–1933) designed every aspect of the immense home, which had eighty-four rooms and eight levels, and extensive grounds into which the house was carefully integrated. Tiffany’s residential masterpiece was also a quasi-museum, for he filled it with his own works—windows, glassware, pottery, enamels, lamps, oil paintings, and watercolors—as well as with objects from his collections of Islamic, Asian, and Native American art.
Laurelton Hall burned down in 1957, but about ten years earlier most of its contents had been removed and sold. Every aspect of the estate is examined and re-created in this volume: its terraced gardens with fountains and pools; the many outbuildings; and Tiffany’s life there. The interior decoration of Laurelton Hall, a particular focus of the book, is represented by both numerous period photographs and newly commissioned color photography of surviving artworks and salvaged architectural components from the estate. For all who admire Tiffany and his work, this book presents a unique portrait of his remarkable home.

Louis Comfort Tiffany's Laurelton Hall.......2007-01-19
This is an excellent and scholarly book filled with incredible photos and descriptions of LCT's home, Laurelton Hall. The author has written a series of fine chapters that look at all aspects of this magnificent residence. What the fire at Laurelton destroyed, this book restores with words and photos. For all of you who love Tiffany's artistry, this book is not to be missed!

Nicely put together and informative for those who are seriously interested in the life and works of Louis Comfort Tiffany.
Customer Reviews:
Very nice overview of Tiffany's work. Not exhaustive but affordable........2006-09-24
I've a few books on Tiffany's stained glass work, including the definitive collection of his lamps and a cut-out paperback with photos of various windows and lamps. In terms of price and coverage, this is a Goldilocksian "just right" middle choice for someone who doesn't want a major investment but is interested in the breadth of Tiffany's work.
Primarily, this book covers the works that are owned by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in fact I bought my copy in its shop to help me remember my visit. (Aside: it is indeed among the best museum shops in the world, and I felt compelled to buy *something*.)
The museum does have an impressive Tiffany collection, including some of the works you've seen photographed in all the "usual places," such as his wysteria window, Autumn Landscape, and the dogwood window. It also has several lamps, vases, and -- possibly surprising to some people -- furniture, mosaics, boxes, and other items that don't get quite as much "airplay" but are still quite beautiful.
The book is separated into chapters on Tiffany's background, interiors, stained-glass windows, mosaics, favrile glass, lamps, enamels and ceramics, and jewelry, metalwork, and woodwork. The text is academic and a little dry, but suitable for the context. You learn about the provenance of the item rather than how it was constructed.
The photos are lovely, with plenty of closeups -- though not *quite* close enough, I found, for my stained-glass hobbyiest's eye. That is, the closeup of the Magnolias and Irises window shows enough detail for you to appreciate the glass and maybe the soldering, but you never see how amazingly the windows are plated. (Fortunately, the museum lets you take non-flash photos, so I have a few examples of my own.) You also see sketches and other in-progress designs, as well as other documents -- such as a drawing of a theater that Tiffany designed which was demolished in 1902.
But if an item isn't in the museum's collection, it isn't mentioned here; if you're looking for an exhaustive All About Tiffany book, this isn't it. It isn't *meant* to be an All About Tiffany book, and as other reviewers have noted, this doesn't focus on windows or lamps. And, at 100 pages, they can't include everything.
Personally, I was blown away by his mosaics (which I'd never seen before), and I realized why the favrile lamps earned him such a reputation (the photos here, like all the others, simply do not do them justice). So I'm very glad that I have this book in my growing collection; certainly, at the reasonable price it gives you a very good overview.
Loved This Book.......2006-05-31
I saw this exhibition at the Met in NYC and was enthralled by it. I showed the book to a fellow Tiffany lover and he said though he has many books on Tiffany there were items in this one he had never seen before. I say buy the book and then a ticket to NYC and go to the Met and see the originals. Both are worth the price.
Brief Info on Book.......2001-10-11
Paperback, 100 pps, over 130 illustrations
A wonderful look at the full range of works by Tiffany. Photos on every page of designs, lamps, vases, mosaics and paintings, and even a peek at his studio and some of the glass workshops. Highly recommended.
Not quite what I was looking for.......2000-06-13
I bought this book expecting to find many pictures of Tiffany's wonderful stained glass windows. In that, I was disappointed, hence the two stars. There is, however, a great sampling of Tiffany's work including jewelry, lamps, and an absolutely stunning green desk collection that I had never seen before. In all it is a great collection of the artist's work and gives an excellent overview of his amazing depth.
However, since I was looking for the stained glass windows, this book wasn't quite what I was searching for. I hope to save someone else from the same mistake.

A broad overview.......2007-01-09
This book gives a broad overview of watercolor techniques, from loose and washy, to photorealism, including glazing, spattering, color theory, and masking. It's a good way to see all the variety found in watercolor today. I only wish it could have gone into more depth on some of the more unusual techniques.

This book gives good detail and excellent examples to allow various styles to emerge. Very organized and easy to read. It covers so many different aspects that I, as a newbie, have found it a must-have out of the many books that I have purchased to help me learn. This really is one of the very best of the many that have been written out there. You'll not be frustrated or feel left lacking for knowledge.
Lots of hidden jewels in the book.......2004-04-15
A wealth of information at your finger tips from some of the greatest watercolor artists of our time. There are enough practice exercises to keep you busy for many many months. Everytime I pick it up I discover something new that I had overlooked before.

Book Description
A powerful force and yet the butt of humor, the coyote figure runs through the folklore of many American Indian tribes. He can be held up as a "terrible example" of conduct, a model of what not to do, and yet admired for a careless. anarchistic energy that suggests unlimited possibilities. Mourning Dove, an Okanagan, knew him well from the legends handed down by her people. She preserved them for posterity in Coyote Stories, originally published in 1933.
Here is Coyote, the trickster, the selfish individualist, the imitator, the protean character who indifferently puts the finishing touches on a world soon to receive human beings. And here is Mole, his long-suffering wife, and all the other Animal People, including Fox, Chipmunk, Owl-Woman, Rattlesnake, Grizzly Bear, Porcupine, and Chickadee. Here it is revealed why Skunk's tail is black and white, why Spider has such long legs, why Badger is so humble, and why Mosquito bites people. These entertaining, psychologically compelling stories will be welcomed by a wide spectrum of readers.
Jay Miller has supplied an introduction and notes for this Bison Books edition and restored chapters that were deleted from the original.

Coyote rules!.......2007-01-18
As a child (45-50 years ago), I read this book while visiting my Grandmother on the Yakama Indian Reservation. Reading the book again reminded me that cultural stories have a theme and thought pattern to them that includes common sense. In other words, that we now know that Coyote is not the supreme ruler of the animal world does not diminish the lessons that each story contains. A simple, excellent work that will acquaint even the most intellectual person with a world some say no longer exists.
A COLLECTION OF NATIVE AMERICAN FOLK TALES.......2006-01-31
Mourning Dove, (Hu-mis-hu-ma) is the pen name of Christine Quintasket, a member of the Colville Reservation of north central Washington. She had little schooling and even less exposure to literature, however she was determined to be a writer of fiction, particularly in her collections of Native American folk lores. She sought out the aged members of the communities near her home and carefully wrote the stories and legends she heard. Mourning Dove thought it was important to write down these stories, which, up to that time, were mostly oral history, because she feared that each story and tradition would be lost as members moved away from the tribe and into western or white civilizations. While the stories of Coyote, (the coyote represented that irrepressible joker and alternate savior of many tribes) as recorded here, have been "santitized" since Mourning Dove thought they were too "ugly" to write about. Coyote is shown in this book at his best and his worst with special powers to summon help for people when needed. He is earthy and greedy, and filled with gluttony and lust. As a precaution, Coyote was given a kinsman to deter him, a Fox, who was able to restore life. Mourning Dove leaves behind the stories she heard around many a cold evening or near a council fire. This book is edited and illustrated by Heister Dean Guie with notes by L.V. McWhorter (Old Wolf) and a foreword by Chief Standing Bear, Oglala Sioux. First published in 1934, this book harks back to time when Native American civilization still had some of their stories left to tell and is vital to read because of the time period in which it was written. This book is often considered "required reading" in some college classes which are enlightened about the value of Native American stories. Let us hope many more will take the time to review these stories in light of their own stories.

Book Description
One of the first known novels by a Native American woman, Cogewea (1927) is the story of a half-blood girl caught between the worlds of Anglo ranchers and full-blood reservation Indians; between the craven and false-hearted easterner Alfred Densmore and James LaGrinder, a half-blood cowboy and the best rider on the Flathead; between book learning and the folk wisdom of her full-blood grandmother. The book combines authentic Indian lore with the circumstance and dialogue of a popular romance; in its language, it shows a self-taught writer attempting to come to terms with the rift between formal written style and the comfort-able rhythms and slang of familiar speech.
