Book Description
A unique alchemy of art and natural historya four-color hand-lettered and illustrated tale of a year's rambles in the northern Rockies.
Whether chasing gophers (Sisu) or flirting with cowboys at the Buckhorn Bar (Hannah), artist Hannah Hinchman and her dog Sisu are excellent guides to some of the wildest country left in America.
Treading carefully near a sandhill crane's nest, testing the ice on the river, and marveling at the seasonal influx of ducks, this pair of curious naturalists takes us into the intimate corners of western Montana, inquiring into all natural phenomenawhich Hannah then captures on the page in detailed sketches, notes, and watercolors.
If Annie Dillard were an artist, she might have composed a book like this. But few writers, or artists, can bring words and images together like Hannah Hinchman. Insightful, funny, and personal, she not only enables us to enter her own particular patch of the natural world, she also teaches us to see our own, bringing to her work an exceptional unity of hand, eye, and heart.

Another Outsider Who Knows What's Best for the Last Best Place.......2006-11-01
The artwork in this book is lovely and the sketches of the author's dog are captivating. Her paintings of the Montana landscapes transported me back there in the time it took to turn the pages. She captures the wide open spaces and the feeling one has when out walking in those lovely fields and mountains. My heart sank when I started reading her commentary and came across her views of those who hunt or make their living on the beautiful Montana land. While she apparently has developed the skill to communicate the beauty of the Montana flora and fauna, Ms. Hinchman has not yet learned to see the beauty of the people of Montana. I am sad to say that reading those few comments kept me from purchasing the book and I don't think the book would have been any less if those comments had been edited out. While she fancies herself an observer of nature the hunters, loggers and ranchers she ridicules have observed the Montana landscape and its creatures with a greater love and respect and for a much longer time than she has. I would recommend this book for it's illustrations but not for the author's views.
Help along the way.......2006-03-11
I have followed Hannah Hinchman's published work for some years now. I have found it most helpful in enabling teachers to help children to observe closely and make graphic fieldnotes in places where they can learn first hand about their own local natural environment. I am in the process of taking some leave to continue with my own professional writing in Europe. I am keeping my own illuminated journal of how the seasons are changing the natural environment here in central France. This book is a delight to return to every day or two. I have looked through it with my nine-year-old granddaughter who does not speak English and we found so many things to discuss in it. As well as being an authoritative work on a place in Montana, U.S.A., it is also an excellent resource for anyone interested in looking closely at the natural world around them anywhere!
Beautiful Work.......2005-05-23
"Little Things in a Big Country" is an artistic journal chronicling one year in the artist's life in the eastern part of Montana, known as the Front. The words and watercolors in this book work together beautifully to convey Ms. Hinchman's careful observations of the world of The Front. Her sketches include things as common as seed pods, animal tracks, and ice formations. What a treasure this book is! Reading it gave me a new appreciation for the power of keen observation of the world around me.
This was the first artistic journal I've come across, and as a new (to me, at least) genre of book, the form impressed me.
This is such a calming and inspiring book, one that I will enjoy reading again and again.
BEAUTIFULLY Done!.......2004-08-25
Hannah Hinchman is a Great Artist! I have all of her books and this one is full of beautiful watercolors and designed pages. All that you treasured in her other books only more of it!
I have been to Montana once when I was 17, she describes it all so prefectly. A true inspiration to any art journaler.
THANK YOU HANNAH!
Incredible, as always.......2004-08-22
As always, I am amazed and stunned at the work produced by this marvelous, funny, talented, brilliant and quirky woman. Her powers of observation and expression are unsurpassed--and infinitely inviting. Her art is rich, detailed, and filled at once with both scientific detail and emotion to which we cannot help but respond. Though my own home area is very far from Hannah's Wyoming Front, I KNOW what it is like to walk there, I KNOW what she means when she writes that she prefers the company of her dog, Sisu, to distracting conversation. I am there, silent, listening, watching, and sketching...thank you, Hannah.

Not that good.......2007-03-12
This book has good tips on color pencil drawing but it lacks on detailed information for truly beginners. Wrong orthography is a problem on this book. It is not worth more than the sales price.
Expand your pencils.......2006-07-09
I have been using Prismacolor pencils for many years and over that time, developed my own techniques, but I found the ideas and examples in this book to be great. I have been dabbling in the techniques I learned in this book and combined some of them with my own. Drawing some things had always been a struggle for me to get "just right," but after seeing some of the detailed examples, I now do them without thought. My favorite discovery in this book was learning to get rid of or hide my mistakes instead of my previous method of just scraping the entire project and starting over.
As for the reviews about the art work, well, they didn't bother me. I wasn't buying a book of art, I was buying a technique book and I found the drawings inside to do a good job of showing off each technique. I also enjoyed that the artwork was taken from various artists because it gave a better sampling of what is possible.
As a recreational sketcher, my husband also enjoyed browsing this book and playing with some of the ideas. Even his notepad doodles now show some signs of the shading and erasing effects that he picked up in this book. So, you don't have to be a serious artist to get something out of this book.
I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to get the most out of their pencils or explore new coloring techniques.
Encyclopedia of Color Pencils.......2006-02-21
I like the book a lot, it will be of great use to me,both for learning and a good source of reference.
I Returned Book.......2005-06-10
The drawings in this book were amaturistic, if not childish.
Not the quality I expected.
Ugh.......2001-07-17
I really didnt find this book helpful at all..For one thing for the most part, she didnt use her own art, and when she did it was discouraging because it wasnt very good(just my opinion, maybe its just her style) I dont think she showed the techniques well, she explains it to a degree, but anyone who has read anything on colored pencil could write a book like hers, she writes about a technique and show other artists work to show it, and it just isnt helpful at all, I wouldnt recommend this book at all.

Book Description
Etta and Claribel Cone had an eye for art that was unparalleled at their time, and they left Baltimore what is perhaps the best gift the city has ever received: their collection.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating women fascinating story.......2007-05-17
I happened upon this book quite by accident but was intrigued just from reading the book jacket and it did not disappoint. The story read like a novel yet it was meticulously researched. The Cone sisters were visionary collectors who supported Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne and others by purchasing their work when the rest of the snooty art world shunned it and tagged it obscene. These extraordinary women led unconventional lives, befriended artists and authors (Gertrude Stein among them) along the way and definitely marched to their own drums. And lucky for the Baltimore Art Museum that they did since their collection was estimated to be worth about $1 billion. No book has ever made me want to visit Baltimore before but I plan to go there to see the Cone Collection.
A work of art!.......2002-11-01
Pay no attention to the ho-hum title -- this is one delightful read. The book illuminates two sisters who had been virtually written out of art history. The author richly embroiders the travels of Claribel and Etta Cone and details how they came to amass one of the world's more comprehsive collections of 20th century art. This painstakingly and lovingly researched book is a masterpiece!

Book Description
Baltimore Portraits is a unique presentation of photographs by Amos Badertscher. These portraits—many accompanied by poignantly revealing, hand-written narratives about their subjects—represent a sector of Baltimore that has gone largely unnoticed and rarely has been documented. In this volume, the assemblage of images of bar and street people—transvestites, strippers, drug addicts, drag queens, and hustlers—spans a twenty-year period from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. Badertscher’s arresting and melancholy photographs document a culture that has virtually disappeared due to substance abuse, AIDS, and, often, societal or family neglect.
The photographer’s focus on content rather than on elaborate technique reveals the intensely personal—and, indeed, autobiographical—nature of his portraits. Their simplicity along with the text’s intimacy affects the viewer in ways not easily forgotten. An introduction by Tyler Curtain contextualizes the photographs both within the history of Baltimore and its queer subculture and in relationship to contemporaneous work by photographers Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman, Duane Michaels, and others. Curtain also positions the underlying concerns of Bardertscher’s art in relation to gay and lesbian cultural politics.
This striking collection of portraits, along with the photographer’s moving text, will impact not only a general audience of photographers and enthusiasts of the art but also those engaged with gay and lesbian studies, queer theory, and cultural studies in general. It is published in association with the Duke University Museum of Art.

No freaks....Just Balti-MORONS at their best!.......2005-04-21
Just a quick note....This wonderful visual tool captures many of Baltimore's notorious charachters (including commentary) in a way NO other Baltimore home grown artist could ever come close to. He see's beauty in the obscure and respects those models who respect him. Many photographers take advantage of those who choose to follow the beat of their own drum but not Amos. In my opinion no one in this book is classified as "forgotten." Some models are dead and gone but other models, such as performance artist JeffRey Clagett, persevere and are very grateful to this excellant photographer for including them in his TRIBUTE to the differences that make the locals here "heros" ,in a twisted way, instead of clowns and freaks. To try to lable any of his diverse models is simply missing the whole point. This book is a masterpiece! Buy the book and judge for yourself. You won't be disappointed. For me it is a trip down memory lane and I have yet to see another local photographer pull off such a TRIBUTE!
mesmerizing.......1999-07-19
Amos Bandertscher's new book, Baltimore Portraits, is a visual documentary of a city's forgotten faces. The photographer uses images as a visual diary of his impressions of the streets, bars, and back alleys of 'Charm City', where the beautiful, the marginalized, outsiders, freaks and clowns converge into a colorful and yet often melancholy documentation of lives lived on the edge and lives lost. The book is an impressive body of work which ranks among the likes of Nan Goldin and Diane Arbus.
Product Description
The compilers of this vast collection of biographical sketches eschewed the dry statistics from "musty records" and personally interviewed Baltimorean men and women who, "by their enterprise and industry, brought the county to a rank second to none among those comprising their great and noble state." Information covers key dates in an individual's life as well as commentary on education, business, religion, military service, and the like, when known. Original full name index. The book is presented as graphic images, so the user sees the work just as it was originally published. It is intended to look and function very much like a "real" book. There is no electronic index, and there is no electronic text to search. However, numerous electronic bookmarks have been added which make it easy to move through the book. Image numbers will match the page numbers for all of the main text, as well as the index. Any unnumbered portraits and illustrations are at the back of the actual file, to keep page numbering consistent.

Product Description
Baltimore has been called "Charm City" or "America in Minitature." But it is more that that - much more. It has held to its history and maritime heritage, while plunging into the 21st century like a Baltimore clipper, bringing cannons to bear. Few American cities have preserved their pasts while being a flagship for urban renewal. But Baltimore has done it. The restoration of its downtown and Inner Harbor has given the city back its pride, and with a billion-dollar budget planned for the next few years, its future has been called Baltimore's Second Renaissance. So, go and experience the best of our past and our First Renaissance. Walk among the Tall Ships, feast on the world's best crab cakes, browse hundreds of boutiques, and soak up our 400-year history at our museums and the oldest pubs in America - all within a good stretch of the legs from the Inner Harbor.

A laugh-out-loud, tell-it-like-it-is guide based on the hit play of the same name
It was the breakup to end all breakups. You've been dumped. Now what?
Don't worry, doll, the bittergirls are here for you. But what exactly is a bittergirl? She's sexy and sassy and she's able to tell her breakup story with humor, without regret, and with the realization that it really was him and not her. Make no mistake, the bittergirl way is not about blame. It's about the style in which you get over it.
It may not be quick, easy, or pretty, but with a little help from the girls and your friends, you will:
Throw your own (very short) pity party
Resist the seductive lure of the moment of weakness
Survive your first post-breakup solo appearance
And tackle all of the issues in between
You will emerge stronger, more confident, and most importantly, a bittergirl yourself.

bitter bite.......2005-12-06
Just when I thought I'd never laugh again the bittergirls came to the rescue! The bittergirls made me laugh out loud, asked some great questions and made me think long and hard about this break-up. Best advice for me? Relationship Mythology - don't make him better than he was. He's a guy. Not a superhero. Thanks bittergirls.
bitter to better.......2005-12-03
honestly. i went from thinking i was a happy, balanced seemingly normal gal, to feeling like an angry, lost and slightly psychopathic wreck. this read gave me a hearty laugh and some damn good pointers to getting it togther. um... perspective! plus the voices of a few other ladies who have clearly been there. even if you're not broken up, you probably will be eventually at some point (sorry... just the way the cookie crumbles) or you'll need to advice another fellow foe. so read the book anyway! it's a fun AND funny ride that will make any state feel better.
good stuff to know, for a guy.......2005-11-30
Best thing I've read about how to NOT enter into a breakup. Funny and biting and, according to the women I know who've read it, oh so true.
Empowering and fun!.......2005-11-29
What a great read - the best laugh in a long time. No matter what stage of life you're at you can relate to the hillarious and very real antics and moments caught and brought to life by the Bittergirls. A nice reminder that getting dumped is something that eventually each of us can learn from and more importantly laugh about.
